Another American turns 50 every eight seconds! Seventy-six million baby
boomers started turning 50 in 1996, and Americans age 65 and better have
outnumbered teenagers since 1983. As the media begins to recognize this
demographic fact, we're seeing more articles in newspapers and magazines
about the aging of America and age-related issues. Getting the most value
for your dollar is important at any age, so save money with senior
discounts when you're shopping for your home and garden.
If you've shopped at Builders Square, Home Depot, Furrows /Payless-Cashways,
or Lowe's, you know the wide array of products they have to offer
homeowners from screen doors, tile, and chandeliers to gas ranges, carpets,
and rose bushes. If you're at least 55 years young and will shop on
Tuesdays, you can save 10% on most items by asking for a senior discount at
Builders Square. Some locations also offer senior bingo and senior door
prizes on Tuesdays. Lowe's and Home Depot's corporate policy regarding
senior discounts is to match a competitor's price on a given item and often
to beat that price by 10 percent. This includes prices obtained with a
senior discount at other stores! Lumber, power tools, sale items, and
special order items may be excluded from senior discounts, but that still
leaves thousands of items they will discount. Remember that all three
store chains are market-driven and are aggressively competing for your
business. Some latitude is given individual managers to offer discounts.
Another bargain-hunting strategy is to take an advertised price to a
competitor to see if they'll match or beat that price. And always, ask for
the discount.
