TISHA CAMPBELL

On Rosie O'Donnell

April 3rd, 2001

This is a transcripted interview from when Tisha Campbell-Martin appeared on The Rosie O'Donnell Show in support of her new show "My Wife and Kids" which aired on March 28th, 2001. It took awhile to get this on the site...lots of hard work so I hope you enjoy reading it.

Rosie: Our next guest is back on tv opposite Damon Wayans in the new sitcom "My Wife and Kids".

[We see a clip of a yet to be aired episode.]

Please welcome to the show Tisha Campbell-Martin. Tisha you look great!

[We see that Tisha is pregnant]

Tisha: Yeah just wobbling on out here.

Rosie: Yeah, good for you! How do you feel?

Tisha: I feel great! I'm at the 5 month mark so I got alot of energy now...yeah.

Rosie: Yeah did you have the morning sickness?

Tisha: Ooh...

Rosie: Oooh bad?

Tisha: It was bad!

Rosie: Was you just living on saltines?

Tisha: mmm...I was living on EVERYTHING! I just kept eating and eating and eating and eating...

Rosie: No kidding?

Tisha: Yeah just until I could stop being sick--Never happened though...

Rosie: No. What were you craving? Did you have any weird cravings?

Tisha: Yeah!! Veggie hot dogs!

Rosie: Do they even make those?

Tisha: Yeah!

Rosie: They do?

Tisha: Yeah..and they're good too!

Rosie: They're good...

Tisha: Yes-veggie hot dogs...it would change every week. It was veggie hot dogs, and then it was like tuna or something really crazy...

Rosie: Yeah...

Tisha: I like protein.

Rosie: Yeah it's you first baby right?

Tisha: It's my first one!

Rosie: Well congratulations!

[The crowd applauds]

Tisha: We waited 10 years you know!

Rosie: Yeah you and your hubby waited 10 years...

Tisha: We waited 10 years...

Rosie: For what reason? You wanted to be settled?

Tisha: Just wanted to be settled and it was a career thing. But I took like a long break after the show and as you know...

Rosie: You worked on "Martin" as you know.

Tisha: Yeah I worked on Martin.

Rosie: And you took a 3 year break...

Tisha: I took a 3 year break because you know I;ve been working since I was 3 years old...

Rosie: Right.

Tisha: So I took a break and I wanted to be a wife and I kind of cooled out...and it was fun...

Rosie: And you liked it...

TIsha: Yeah...now I'm busy. I got busy.

Rosie: Yes you did, well good for you. Congratulations. Now are they writing it into the show?

Tisha: Yeah, you know what? They were going to write it into the show but they didn't know when they were going to air any episode when, so all of the episodes are out of order, so you're going to see me big one day and then skinny, then big, then skinny. So every week you gotta watch it just to see what I'm going to look like.

Rosie: But, they're not saying you're pregnant in the show...

Tisha: No...

Rosie: So you'll be carrying alot of laundry baskets.

Tisha: Yeah, yeah--trying to hide stuff.

Rosie: You know I did a movie once and when I dieted before the movie, and then like 4 months later I gained it all back and then we had to do re-shoots- and you watch the movie I knock on the door I'm 170, I walk in the door I'm 163--

Tisha: It just bounces back and forth! You know what I'm gonna have to call you because I need that litle diet that you're doing...

Rosie: I'm doing weight watchers.

Tisha: I heard!--I heard about you!

[Tisha gives Rosie a high five]

Rosie: You know.

Tisha: Everybody keeps talking about how much weight I'm gaining so fast with the baby too!

Rosie: With the baby.

Tisha: With the baby...

Rosie: What are the doctors saying?

Tisha: The doctor said STOP!

Rosie: Well maybe it's time to listen.

Tisha: Well yeah...it slowed down but I went from a size 4 to a 14 in 3 months.

[They go on joking for a moment and laughing]

Rosie: You know 14 is my goal wieght.

Tisha: Yeah?

Rosie: Yeah if i'm 14, I'm done and I'm happy.

Tisha: You know what my mother just lost a whole lot of weight too!

Rosie: Did she? What did SHE do?

Tisha:You know what? Happiness.

Rosie: Yeah.

Tisha: Yeah- she went to school. My mother-

Rosie: You mother graduated.

TIsha: Yeah graduated from high shcool you guys!

Rosie: And she's fifty right?

[Crowd applauds]

TIsha: Yes.

Rosie: Good for her.

Tisha: She had us at a very young age. She got married at 16 and had us all by the time she was twenty. She's my hero. So she went back to school. I threw her the biggest prom- I flew back some of her old high school firends from the 60's and she just had the greatest time. It was great.

Rosie: Well that has got to be an amazing thing for her spirit, to be able to do that. Because I'm sure in the back of her mind she had always felt a littel bit like " I wish I had finished".

Tisha: And she did it.

Rosie: She did it. Yeah, good for her. It's amazing, it really is. Is that her first grand baby?

Tisha: No this is actually-no but I'm the only girl so-you know...

Rosie: You got a little extra mommy stuff going on.

Tisha: I got a little etra mommy stuff goin' on.

Rosie: She's going to come live with you right , for a few months?

Tisha: Um...she lives not too far away from us so she's going to be around.

Rosie: Right, she'll be around.

Tisha: Because I'm nervous about nannies and stuff. I don't know--I'm just just nervous, I'm nervous so...

Rosie: You gotta be careful you know.

Tisha: Yeah.

Rosie: And you know if you have family around it's great to have family around until you really need somebody when you work.

Tisha: That's right....well my mother and my mother-in-law said they're going to help out so--that's cool.

Rosie: Yeah that's good. So are you going to bring the baby to work?

Tisha: I'm bringing the bby--I'm breasts feeding--doing all that.

Rosie:Yes you are! TISHA!

Tisha: That's right!

Rosie: Are you having a good time with Damon? He is a funny funny man.

Tisha: Oh my god, he is the best! He is so funny and so in to--I just like watching him work on the set just finding the funny and finding the heart. He keeps it all intact. It's great!

Rosie: He really is a dad and it comes through. You can see that. Alot of actors play dads on tv and go--you can tell.

Tisha: It is kind of loosely based on his life. Yeah it is a great show and I couldnlt ask for a better oppourtunity to be o a show lie this.

Rosie: You know it's doing really well in the ratings and tomorrow night

Tisha: Thankyou America!!

Rosie: Tomorrow night it's a double showing, two in a row--tomorrow Wednessay's--no--yeah--hello it's Wednesday.

Tisha: Yeah at 8 O'clock.

Rosie: And the again at 8:30.

Tisha: And then again at 8:30...so we're back to back and so you guys go to watch it because you guys really supported us and--

Rosie: Yeah and it's doing really well--hey listen, I know the first baby--

[Rosie pulls out a fisher price box with a toy in it and passes it to Tisha.]

I'm the mother of fare- fisher price light and sound nursery monitor. The best one in my opinion.

Tisha: Thankyou.

Rosie: And...

[Rosie pulls out another toy.]

Rosie: ...The baby born snuggly! You must have that!

Tisha: That's right- got to have that close to your heart!

Rosie:There's no other snuggly that works as well.

Tisha: Is this the best?

Rosie: That's the best.

Tisha: You are- oh she's so sweet. Thankyou.

Rosie: Tisha happy baby to you! [To audience] Watch her show!

Tisha: Thanks.

Rosie: We'll be right back with Jerry from Surivor--The MEany.
