'Smallville' creators will write Aquaman pilot
In a case of art sort of imitating art, The WB has given the go-ahead to a pilot about Aquaman – the subject of much derision on HBO's Entourage last summer.

Smallville creators Miles Millar and Al Gough will write the pilot, which like their current show will place a DC Comics character in the present-day world and emphasize character development over superpowered action. In fact, the show most likely won't be called Aquaman, and underwater excursions will be limited, the showbiz trade papers report.

The pilot news comes a few weeks after Aquaman was featured on an episode of Smallville, which drew the show's biggest audience this season. The new show, however, won't be built from the episode, and Alan Ritchson, the one-time American Idol contestant who played Aquaman, reportedly isn't being considered for the lead role.

Also out of the running for the part: Entourage star Adrian Grenier, whose fictional alter ego, Vince Chase, is embarking on a big-budget, big-screen Aquaman with director James Cameron.

The Aquaman show will focus on Arthur Curry, who in his early 20s is becoming aware of his powers – if not yet his history as the king of Atlantis – while figuring out his life on land. The pilot is scheduled to shoot in Florida early next year, with Smallville vet Greg Beeman directing.

Michael Rosenbaum creates show for Fox
Michael Rosenbaum along with Smallville writer Greg Beeman will be writing a half-hour comedy for Fox TV.

"Welcome to Paradise" will be based on Rosenbaum's life as a teenager in the late 1980s. The storyline will follow a 13-year-old boy who moves to Indiana with his eccentric family.

"It's pretty much about how he gets through life," Rosenbaum said. "He's got this crazy mom who is a child at heart because she married early and never got to be a child."

The script stems from a series of vignettes Rosenbaum had written about his childhood and adolescence while on location in Vancouver filming "Smallville."

"Those are really crazy, dark, sad, hilarious and wacky memories," Rosenbaum said. "I was too cheap to get therapy, so I started writing short stories from my childhood."

On a flight to Vancouver last year, Rosenbaum showed some of his vignettes to Beeman.

"I had the experience of working on 'The Wonder Years,' and like the stories on that show, the stories he'd written were honest, funny and specific to the time," Beeman said.

Rosenbaum will also be the executive producing of the show with former WB President Jordan Levin, former Regency TV President Pete Aronson and Mike Karz of "Malibu's Most Wanted."
