IGN Interviews Smallville's Newest Hero, The Green Arrow

"IGN TV: Can you talk about how your casting as Aquaman came about, and how that led to you playing Green Arrow?

Justin Hartley: It was interesting. I went in for Aquaman, just a regular audition like everyone else does, and then got the callback. I think I got another callback, and then I tested for the studio, which is another process you go though; you test for the studio and then you test for the network. So I tested for the studio, and then didn't really hear anything back. And then the next thing I heard was that Aquaman was cast. I was like, "Okay," and kind of moving on. And then I got a phone call that they wanted me to come in and test at the studio again. And so I went in again -- this is like a month later - and tested again, then I went to the network and tested again, and got the role. I went down there and shot the pilot in Miami. Miles and Al were there every day, and I think in working with them, when this role came about, that's definitely why they thought of me. Because they offered me the role; they didn't have me audition for it. So it was really kind of them and fortunate for me. Work begets work, you know? Whether it [the series] goes or not, it begets work."

The greening of 'Smallville

"Green Arrow, another familiar DC Comics hero, will be making an appearace on Smallville in its upcoming sixth season. The Emerald Archer's alter-ego, Oliver Queen, is an incredibly talented bowman who is keen to assemble a group of "extraordinarily gifted individuals" to act as society's protectors.

Yep, this will be the basis for the formation of the Justice League, and Queen will reportedly stick around for several episodes of the show.

According to Dark Horizons, Justin Hartley, who was cast in the pilot for the proposed Aquaman TV series, will be cast as Oliver Queen..."

Smallville Gets its Jimmy

"They’ve already introduced Lois Lane and Perry White on Smallville, and now the producers have decided it’s time to fill in the last piece of the future Daily Planet staff by bringing on young Jimmy Olsen (who it turns out, isn’t so young in this incarnation). "As things heat up in the season finale of the WB's Smallville, actor John Glover, who plays Lionel Luther, tells Media Blvd. Magazine that chaos will reign. In a rather unusual move, the day before they were to shoot the episode, teh entire scrip was thrown out and rewritten."

"It was so excitig. Usually, we're more organized than that. I think it added to the sense of the frenzy and chaos with everybody in Smallville. James Marsters has a lot to do with the choaos. Lionel is still trying to get into Martha Kent's pants, or get closer to Martha. Martha is interested, but incredibly wary. Clark is realizing that Lionel knows some stuff that, maybe, could be dangerous. Lex is being a total asshole to Lionel, but Lionel is still trying to be good father, in spite of Lex's stubbornness. Everything is falling apart because the world goes into choas."

CW Throws Back Its 'Aquaman' Star
The CW, which will replace The WB and UPN in the fall, a Justin Hartley has taken over the role of Aquaman.

"Justin Hartley, who until recently was a regular on NBC's soap opera "Passions," will now play Arthur "A.C." Curry in the show, which comes from "Smallville" creators Al Gough and Miles Millar. The casting change came about after the pilot moved under the auspices of The CW, a joint venture between Warner Bros. (whose TV-studio arm is producing the pilot) and CBS Corp."

"Will is a talented actor with a promising career, and we hope to work with him in the future," a CW rep tells The Hollywood Reporter. "We have made a decision to go in a different direction with the Aquaman role and wish him the best of luck."

Best of WB, UPN to blend in merger

"CBS which owns UPN and Time Warner which owns the WB have decided to merge the 2 cable stations and create "the CW". The merger is hoping to bank on successful shows like Gilmore Girls, Smallville, Everybody Hates Chris, and Veronica Mars, while getting weeding out the extra content that won’t fit into a single station."

"CEO of CBS, Les Moonves says there will be "quite a schedule" starting with 30 hours of programming each week that they hope will draw in young and minority viewers, something which the WB and UPN have been successful at on their own. Here’s to hoping the new uber station will be worth watching."

Smallville's 100th: Whose Number Is Up?
TV Guide's Matt Webb Mitovich talks to one of Smallville's creator Al Gough about the upcoming 100th episode, airing this Thursday 8pm/ET about the death of a major character.

"TVGuide.com: What were the driving forces in deciding to kill off this character? Was it purely for story-line impact, did budget play into it at all, was it just a desire to shake things up...?
Gough: Again, what we have found doing this show each season is that you need to do something to kind of shake things up. Last year we brought in Lois. This year we knew we had some big pieces to play with — the Fortress of Solitude, Brainiac, Clark and Lana having sex — but then we said, "It's the fifth year of the show and there needs to be a seismic shift in the series." Something happens that really is absolute, and this person won't magically come back to life."

Tom Welling on a Death in the Smallville Family
Tom Welling recently held a press conference at the Television Critics Association press tour to discuss the upcoming 100th episode. Welling stated, the 100th episode will mark a new direction for the show.

"It was a really exciting episode to shoot because it’s a turning point," says the actor. "I think from this episode on, this show is going to be very different from what it’s been in the past. And I also think we’re finally going to get to what I believe the audience wanted the show to be. And everything up to this point has just been building... After the 100th episode, [this show is] going to be even better than what we’ve ever done in the past."

James Marsters Returns
James Marsters returns as Dr. Milton Fine aka Brainiac in the new story arc on Smallville beginning with "Hypnotic" airing in the Spring. In the new arc, according to The WB, Brainiac returns to manipulate Lex's (Michael Rosenbaum) obsession with the spaceship to trick him into helping free General Zod from the Fortress of Solitude.

The WB Casts Aquaman

The WB has set 28-year-old newcomer Will Toale to star in Aquaman, a new series from Smallville creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, says Variety.

The Florida-born Toale worked as a model before landing a supporting role in "A Streetcar Named Desire" at Broadway's Roundabout Theater alongside Natasha Richardson and John C. Reilly.

"In the [three month] search for Aquaman, we saw over 400 people in England, Australia, Canada and several U.S. cities," Gough said. "We saw Will's tape over Christmas, and he was the only guy we took to the network."

A pilot will shoot in March, probably in Miami. The series is expected to be a signature offering next fall for the network and Warner Bros. TV.

"We call him 'the much-maligned Aquaman,' but when we first pitched 'Smallville,' Superman was considered cheesy," Gough said. "In the comic, Aquaman's the lost king of Atlantis, but in our version, he is Arthur Curry, this twentysomething who owns a dive shop." [photo]
