EARLY YEARS
Terrance Stanley Fox was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on July 28, 1958. His name was given after his uncles from both sides of the family. His older brother was Fred and younger was Darrell. He also had a sister named Judith.
Some early pictures of Terry Fox show him as a serious child. The qualities that would bring him success in later life were in place. Terry was determined and tenacious.
The mother of Terry Fox, named Betty recalled that Terry had always tried hard as a toddler. He had stacked wooden blocks tirelessly and he tried and tried until they stayed in their place.
Betty and Rolly, the parents of Terry Fox taught their children about good manners and respect of the elderly. Into adulthood, the Fox children continued to address family friends as Mr., Mrs., or Miss. The children had table manners, using a knife and fork and keeping elbows off the table as well as, changing clothes after school before they went to play.
These children were expected to stay out of any trouble and when a job was given to them, they had to stay with it. They also did seasonal jobs such as berry-picking which they had started around the age of nine or ten. These seasonal jobs were continued until their teenage years. At the age of twelve or thirteen, they started to purchase their own clothing for school, and later on they bought their own golf clubs and bikes.
