Chapter Thirteen

BRENDA HAD MEANT it when she said she was determined to do something about the way people were treating Sonny. She had tried talking to her friends, most of which were the worst offenders, but it was like whistling in the wind. None of them would even listen to what she was saying and ended up trying to convince her to leave Sonny. Brenda was infuriated. If they were really her friends, they would treat her husband decently, if only out of respect for her. She left not even wanting to have anything more to do with them ever again.

When Brenda came home and reported to Sonny what had happened, he wasn't surprised in the least, and urged her to once again to let it go. But Brenda was more determined than ever as she made a stunning announcement. "I'm going to go back to modelling."

"I thought you hated modelling?" Sonny asked, shocked by this sudden turn in conversation.

"I do." She confessed. "You know how I get before I have to do a photo shoot, but it gives me a position of power to work from."

"oh, for god's sake." Sonny exploded. "This doesn't have anything to do with your insane plan to make people be nice to me, does it?"

"My status as a model puts me in a power position." She declared. "And once there I can publicly expose the way these people are treating you."

"Brenda." He tried to not lose his temper. "You can't make people like someone they hate. You could never make me like Jax, and the same goes for the people who don't like me."

"That's different." Brenda insisted. "You hate Jax, but you're not going around trying to prevent him from living any kind of life in this town, and they are."

"Let it go, Brenda." He urged once again. "I don't care. I'm used..."

"I'm not going to let it go." She cut him off. "And don't tell me you're used to being treated like this. I don't want to hear it. You're married to me now and you'll be treated differently."

"That's what it's really about, isn't it." He accused. "It's not that you can't stand it that I'm being treated like this, it's because you're so-called friends are treating your husband like this."

"And why shouldn't it be ticking me off." She wanted to know. "If they were any kinds of friends, they'd treat you decently out of respect for me."

"So now you're going to make them pay." Sonny returned. "Do what you want, Brenda, you will anyway, but I want no part of this." With that he walked out the door.

Brenda made a face at him as he left, then she went over to the phone to contact her agent and put out the word Brenda Barrett was ready to return to the world of modelling. Only she quickly found out that Brenda Corinthos was not the hot commodity that Brenda Barrett had been, as she got treated to the same kind of prejudice that Sonny had been enduring since they returned to town. It didn't take Brenda long to realize what was going on and when she did she got even madder and more determined to give back what she and Sonny had been getting.

The only problem she had was how to do it. The people she knew with the power to help her, were the ones who were responsible for this. For the first time in her life she realized what it felt like to feel really powerless and she didn't like the feeling. It caused her to rethink her whole way of thinking. She had to start thinking like one of the little people trying to go up against the rich and powerful ones. So how would they do it? Then it came to her. It was a truly scandalous idea. If she really went through with it, it would sever all her ties with the people she once considered as friends. Did she really have the guts to do this? Just how badly did she truly want this?

She realized she wanted this very badly. She also realized she couldn't make this about Sonny or people wouldn't even listen to what she was trying to do. She would have to go through with this in the same self-righteous manner her former friends were going after Sonny. As if she felt it were her civic duty to do to them what they had been doing to her husband.

With that frame of mind, she took a step towards completing her goals, before she had time to chicken out. She grabbed her purse and headed out the door, then she drove to the offices of the Port Charles Herald. Once there, she asked to see the editor.

The Herald, was Port Charles' own little scandal rag. It was probably the only newspaper in town that would have the guts to go after the Quartermaines and the rest of their ilk. As she strutted into the editor's office, she announced, "I'm about to double your readership." The she laid out to him what she had in mind. He was intrigued and agreed to print her first article. Depending on the response it got, would decide if any further articles would be printed.

Brenda knew the people of Port Charles and she knew it would cause newspapers to sell like hotcakes. The only problem she had was deciding who should be the first person to be roasted in her own personal hotseat. Since Brenda felt Ned was behind a lot of the trouble Sonny was having, she decided to honor him with the title. And the title of her first article, in a column she wanted to call Port Charles Uncovered would be One Bride Too Many. Ned wanted to hold Sonny's past against him, let's see how he liked getting a taste of his own medicine.

SONNY KNEW HE should stay away from Michael. That was a part of his life that no longer existed. But he just couldn't do it. He'd raised that child and loved him like his own. He needed to make sure he was doing okay, and once he did, he would finally let him go. So Sonny dropped by the Quartermaines on the pretext of wanting to speak to Carly because of what she'd pulled at Jason and Robin's wedding. He could hardly ask to see a child he supposedly didn't even know and who was now called Jamie instead of Michael. He was informed that Mrs. Quartermaine had accompanied her son and his nanny to the park.

Sonny had no trouble locating them in the park. Strangely enough, he had almost thought Michael would look different then he remembered him. After all, he had a new name, maybe he also looked different as well. But he looked exactly as he remembered him. It was a fight not to come forward and go to him. But Sonny knew it wouldn't be the same. Michael's face wouldn't light up when he saw him as he launched himself into his arms calling him Uncle Sonny. To Michael or Jamie as he was now called, Sonny would be a total stranger to him. Not the man who told him bedtime stories, tucked him in at night and comforted him when he had bad dreams.

As luck would have it, Carly noticed Sonny lurking in the bushes watching them and went over him. Of course, Carly being Carly, she thought he was watching her, not Michael. "Well, well, Mr. Corinthos." She smirked. "Fancy meeting you here."

"Mrs. Quartermaine." He replied, bold as can be, as if it was every day he was caught lurking in the bushes. He looked up at the sky. "Nice day we're having, isn't it?"

"You know." She purred like a cat who had just seen a fresh bowl of cream set down before her. "You don't have to lurk in the bushes. If you want to see me, all you have to do is come and see me." She added, narrowing the space between their bodies. "After what happened between us at the wedding reception, I think I've made it more than clear, I'm more than willing."

"And I think I made it clear." Sonny took a step back from her. "That I'm not."

Carly turned nasty in a flash. "Then what are you doing here?" She demanded to know. "Spying on me from the bushes."

"I told you I was concerned about your son." He reminded her. "And I was just checking to see if he was all right."

"You know." She replied. "Lurking in the bushes in the park spying on children is something a pedophile would do. Perhaps I should report you to the police." She added. "I'm sure they'd love a reason to haul you in for questioning."

"Don't bother." Sonny returned. "I'm leaving." Giving into the urge to see Michael hadn't told him what he wanted to know. For him to find out if the child was truly happy and doing well, he would need to spend time with him, and he didn't think that was about to happen. Besides, even if he learned Michael was miserable, what was he supposed to do about it? Leave Brenda and their child and marry Carly just to make Michael happy.

"Wait!" Carly called to Sonny. "You came all this way to see Jamie, why leave before you've met him."

"I thought you were worried I was some kind of pervert spying on children from the bushes in the park." He reminded her.

"I've changed my mind." She told him. "So," she took his hand in hers and lead him through the bushes, "let's go meet my son, shall we?"

Sonny knew he should refuse the offer, but he just couldn't make himself do it. This was the perfect opportunity to find out what he wanted to know. So he took her up on her offer. Only when they arrived in the clearing Michael was nowhere in sight and his nanny was fast asleep on the park bench.

Carly roughly shook the woman awake. "Where is my son?" She demanded to know.

"What?" The woman asked groggily. She looked around. "I was only asleep for a moment. He couldn't have wandered off in that amount of time. I'm sure he must be here somewhere." Then she tried to put the blame off on Carly. "Besides, you were here. Wouldn't you have seen him wandering away." Then her shrewd gaze fell on Sonny. "Or were you too busy to notice."

"He can't have gone far." Sonny tried to assure her. "We were only talking for a few moments. You go look for him in that direction and I'll go look for him in this direction."

The longer the search continued and there was no sign of him, the more worried Sonny became. Carly and Sonny met back at the point where they started. "Where is he?" Carly shrieked.

"I don't know." Sonny replied, feeling helpless. "But we'll find him."

"My son is the only good thing in my life." Carly flung herself on Sonny's chest and cried. "If anything happens to him, I don't know what I'll do."

Sonny did his best to comfort Carly, then out of the corner of his eye he finally spotted him. "There he is."

They both looked as Jamie began to cross the street to get to the ice cream man who was stopped on the other side of the rob. Then both stood frozen to the spot as they saw a car barreling right towards Jamie. Without giving it a second thought, Sonny went rushing into the path of the oncoming car and shoved Jamie out of the way. While Jamie fell to the ground out of the path of the car, Sonny wasn't so lucky, and the car barreled right into him.
