NBC began On September 13, 1926 when the Radio Corporation of America advertised the formation of the National Broadcasting Company on a full page of the newspaper. National programing became a reality in Novenber of that same year when NBC aired a night of entertainment from the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in NYC.The broadcast was heard all over and was enjoyed by many. An early reguarly scheduled program that began on NBC was called Children's Hour and aired on Sunday mornings.From then on in NBC's popularity continued to grow. They signed some of the biggest names in entertainment including Groucho Marx and Ed Wynn, and Jack Benny, the list goes on. Not only was NBC popular in the entertainment field but in news and sports as well. The first regular television service began on April 30, 1939 which was a broadcast of President Roosevelt opening the New York World's fair. NBC also had many other firsts including baseball telecast, professional boxing, first full hour tv production, and first major league baseball telecast. In July 1941 NBC became the world's first commercial television station. The station continues it's rise throughout the decade and then the 50's hit. As the decline of the popularity of radio started NBC began coast to coast service and the Today show starts, 2 years later the Tonight show. Sports became an important part of broadcasting in the 60's. Situation comedies begin as well as Star Trek which becomes very popular. Perhaps the biggest thing that occured in 1966 when NBC became the first full color network.
