Prologue

It was a seemingly normal evening. Caitlyn McCollum was getting ready for bed, and arguing incessantly with her father about a toy she had seen on that evening’s television.

“But, Daddy! I just have to have the Pretty Princess doll. It’s got a sparkly dress and those cute little shoes- and…” She stomped her foot down in frustration.

Jack McCollum sighed, used to this battle. Caitlyn wasn’t exactly spoiled, but like any 6-year-old girl, she tended to want everything she saw on TV. Unfortunately for his wallet, Jack’s weak spot was his daughter and, unlike his wife, he tended to give in after significant prodding. The girl knew this and usually played him like a great hand in a poker match.

Pl-eeeee-ase, Daddy?! All the other girls have them, and if I don’t get one, they’ll laugh and I’ll just be soo sad…” She promptly burst into tears and her father sighed again and let out one small, barely audible, word. “Alright…”

Caitlyn heard him as clear as if he were using a microphone. “Oh, thank you Daddy! I love you so much…” She threw her arms around his neck and he smiled wearily. “I love you too, kiddo. Now get into bed.”

For once, she didn’t argue, not wanting to push her victory. As his daughter climbed under the covers, Jack gave her a kiss on the forehead and started for the door. “’Night sweetie.”

Her voice came, muffled, from her pillow. “’Night Daddy.”

He smiled as he moved to turn off the lights. The room was soon bathed in darkness. Jack left the door open slightly, enough to let the glow from the hall stream in.

Caitlyn’s eyes promptly closed and she was asleep in a matter of seconds. Asleep too fast to notice the dull, rhythmic humming that slowly penetrated the air above her house: the humming that was getting louder and louder. Closer and closer.

The girl sighed and rolled over in her sleep. Something opened up directly above her, sending a stream of light below. Caitlyn began to rise from her bed, levitating gently in the air. A yawn worked its way from her mouth as she immediately woke up.

“Is it morning already?”

She looked down and promptly screamed, but it was far too late. As she continued to rise and was sucked through the ceiling she found herself thinking she may never get that Pretty Princess doll.
