Broken Transmission

Disclaimer: I do not own any of the characters from the Cell, they belong to Viacom(?). Nor do I own Scully and her posse, they belong to Chris and 20th Century FOX. I do, however, own Karen (wow! that's saying something). If you would like to use her I'd be delighted, but please ask first. Thanx 4 not suing me!

Prologue

It was a normal evening. Dr. Karen Hepling was doing her normal work, checking the huge machine that she used for transferring one person into another’s mind. The transferred usually being Catharine, the hospital’s resident expert at the machine and the mind usually belonging to a member of the mentally ill community.

The machine was off now, but it still looked like something out of a big-budget sci-fi film, with it’s three red body suits and the network of wires that connected them. Strange it was, but it served its purpose. Karen still found it amazing that they could actually achieve mind transfer.

She was drawn from her thoughts as the machine suddenly switched on. “What the…” Karen said, confused. At first it did nothing, just sat there humming with electricity. She began to poke at it, wondering what was causing this to happen.

*Maybe someone accidentally threw the power* She thought, but didn’t believe it. The switch was right there, beside her right hand. And to her knowledge, all the wiring to it was in this room. She would have seen if someone had turned it on.

Then it begin buzzing, as if processing the information of someone in it. Karen could only watch in amazement as the screen pulled up a scan of someone’s mind.

She saw right away that it was not a normal human brain. The sections were wildly distorted, as if someone had taken it and shaken it beyond the point of recognition. Even someone with the worst psychological problems would not have a scan like this.

Even wilder was the rest of the data that began popping up on the screen. The percentages were horribly out of proportion. *Whoever this is, they’re like no one else on earth* Karen thought, her eyes growing wider with every second.

And then the machine was finished and all she was left with was a name: Fox Mulder.
