The Stranger

by Leslie

Don't own them! But love to write about them!

Authors notes: The Stranger is a character created of my own imagination, hope you enjoy the story.

The desert flat, dry and vast, but to most cowboys this is home, living off the land, answering to no one, such is the code of the open plains. Today is hot like it was yesterday and the day before. Mexico is a country where heat is second nature, like whiskey is to any man. This particular summer’s day, a lone rider comes out of the west to place he’s mark in the pages of history.

We find an old man sitting just outside the saloon, watching the world go by, as riders enter and leave the town. The towns name is Purgatory, no man’s land a stop where most outlaws rest before moving on. The old man struggles to make out the rider coming into view. There is something about this rider as the winds begin to pick up, the breeze feels cooler and the day soon becomes night, the rider begins to approach closer and closer. The apprehension mounts as the old dude begins to make out the appearance of the rider. Tall, lean much like most cowboys of the west. However, the stranger approaching is wearing fancy clothes. The man sitting smiles, he knows that this rider will no doubt cause a commotion among the other men in the saloon. The day has dragged on without any excitement; he can hardly wait as the stranger approaches.

He knows, the minute the stranger gets off his horse and enters the saloon, with those men inside. Who by the way; have been drinking whiskey for the last few hours, will suddenly go quiet. Then one or more will walk over to where the stranger sits, looking him over, and trying to determine if this man will stand his ground.

The old man was right, it happens just as he anticipated. Four men surround the stranger, and as he asks the bartender for a glass of whiskey. One of the men taps his shoulder, “hey, stranger (he looks him over) did your mama dress you for Sunday school?”

The other men begin to laugh wondering what the stranger will say. The stranger ignores the remarks, and takes his whiskey and drinks it in one gulp and then puts his drink down, and motions to the bartender for another drink. The bartender looks to the other men (with a look that some how he’ll find himself caught in the middle of the crossfire). The bartender pours the drink, his hand shaking. The stranger again lifts the glass to his mouth savoring the smell and then drinks it.

The other man this time pushes him and demands, “hey, did you hear what I asked?”

This time the response is immediate. The stranger twists the man’s arm around his back, pushes him to the bar and bangs his head twice on the counter. It happens so fast you’re not sure you actually counted twice. Then the man falls to the ground, unconscious. The other three men are about to begin a fight, but are cut short. The stranger grabs his rifle and hits the man to his left. Then with the butt of the rifle jabs the man to his right.

The man in the middle watches as his friends all fall to the ground. Then the stranger pulls the rifle pointing it right in front of him and finally the stranger talks, “Do you want to make fun of my mother too?”

The man standing shakes his head, “No sir!” The old man who had been anticipating an all out bar barrel, shakes his head and returns to his chair, just outside the saloon. The stranger walks out of the saloon and looks out towards the open plain, as a dust storm begins building from the south of the town. The stranger jumps back onto the saddle and rides off heading west. The men in the saloon go back to drinking their whiskey.

*******

In the town of Four Corners, where we find our heroes, Chris and Buck are having breakfast in the saloon, it’s early morning and Vin walks into the saloon sits down and joins his friends. Not, much is said. Men like these don’t always have to say much to know they are welcomed to each other’s company.

While, upstairs in Nathan’s clinic we see him treating a town member with gout. Ezra finally retires after a long night of gambling and coming out on top. Josiah is hard at work fixing up the church, while JD has gone to visit his friend Casey. Mary Travis the town’s newspaper owner is printing the morning edition of the Clarion News.

Everyone in town is grateful for the friends they have and the men who protect them. These seven men arrived more than ten months now, and their presence is still a welcome sight. The cattlemen are still a threat to the homesteaders, which these seven men protect and they don’t plan on leaving anytime soon.

That morning a new stranger appears riding into town. The stranger dismounts and walks into the saloon. Heads over to the counter and orders coffee and some eggs. He sits in the back and Chris, Buck and Vin glance over towards the stranger and return to their breakfast. A few minutes later the bartender brings out the food and sets it down. “You need anything more?” Shaking his head no, the bartender returns to the bar. The stranger then begins eating. A hearty meal finally to be enjoyed.

Then a few minutes’ later fifteen men ride into town, properly from a cattle drive. They walk into the saloon and start ordering beer and whiskey. Two of these men glance over to the stranger in the back, they recognize him and walk over. They both sit down at the same table, “well! Northstar, it’s been a long time since we saw you last.”

Northstar turns to view the two men, “I thought you two were dead?”

The two men become angry, “no thanks to you.” One of them grabs for Northstars arm. But Northstar is as fast with a gun as with a rifle.

Holding a single action army colt to the man who grabbed his arm, he then quickly releases his arm. Northstar shakes his head, “why don’t you boys just walk away?”

Both men back off and walk towards the other cowboys. Relaxing for a moment Northstar re-holsters the gun and is about to sit, when suddenly the two cowboys glance at one another, and turn with their guns drawn. Northstar draws this time with both guns and manages to shoot first, not killing, but dis-arming both men. Shooting both bullets right in the barrel of each their weapons.

Before any of the other cowboys can react, Chris, Buck and Vin are up with their guns to back up the stranger and hopefully avoid any blood shed. Chris motions to the cowboys, “holster those guns boys, you’re friends provoked the man. Don’t make the same mistake, you might not be so lucky.”

The others look at the three men and the stranger with all their guns drawn. One-man motions to the others, “put the guns away boys we’re here to enjoy the whiskey and the women.” There are few that stay behind to continue drinking; the stranger seeing that everything had been settled returns to his coffee.

Chris walks over to the stranger, “mind if I join you?” The stranger motions to Chris to sit. “That was quite a show you put on.”

The stranger looks at Chris. “They had it coming… they should have just left well enough alone.”

“What happen?” “I guess you could say, an unsettled dispute, which now has been settled,” is the strangers response. “Names Northstar,” he takes his hand out towards Chris and both men shake.

“I see; do you plan to stay in town for very long”?

The stranger looks up at Chris, “you the law?”

“You could say that, names Chris Larabee. Me and my men protect this town, we try to keep the peace here.”

Northstar smiles, “then I guess I’ll leave.” For the first time, Chris wishes he didn’t feel like a Judas running this stranger out of town. There’s something about this stranger, which he feels sympathy for. The stranger stands up, as does Chris. “Before leaving do you have a Doctor in town?”

“Yeah, why?”

He opens the left side of his coat, and smiles at Chris. “I guess one of them boys, got a lucky shot.”

Chris looks at the stranger, “yeah! You need help”?

“Nah, just point me in the right direction, and I’ll make sure to get their without further trouble.”

Northstar walks upstairs, knocks on Nathan’s door. Nathan opens the door and asks, “Can I help you?” He shows the wound, and then Nathan motions him in. “What happen?”

Northstar answers, “a difference of opinion.”

“Remove your shirt please.”

The stranger then looks at Nathan; “you’re a Doctor right?”

“I prefer being called a healer.”

“Do you believe in the same oath, which doctors take, of confidentionality between doctor and patient?”

“Yes, why do you ask?”

“Well Doctor, or healer as you wish, I have a secret, which no one but you can know.”

As the patient removes his shirt, we see what that secret is. He is really a she. “Oh my God!” Nathan looks at her.

“It’s really no big deal. It’s just better no one knows. I can’t be taken seriously if others see I’m a woman,” explains Northstar.

“Well for now let’s take care of that wound, then we’ll talk more about your situation.” After she explains to Nathan, the situation that forced her into the deception in the first place. Nathan listens, does not give an opinion and is astonish at the woman’s story. “And you’ve been a bounty hunter ever since?”

“Yes.”

“Your secret is safe with me. For now you should rest at least a day. You’ve lost blood and you don’t want to reopen the wound,” advises Nathan.

“Well, the law in town has made it clear they would rather have me leave as soon as possible.”

“I’ll let Chris know that you’ll be leaving tomorrow.”

She smiles for the first time, “thanks Doc, you’re a good man.” It’s been awhile since Northstar has actually been asked to stay. Although her wound will heal fast (and we’ll find out later how that’s possible) she finds herself relieved to be able to rest.

*******

From out west there is a man, his name is Sledge who has been after Northstar, for over a year. He never knew what name she used, only that his employer is paying top dollar for her return. Sledge found out from his sources, of a young bounty hunter that not only is fast with a gun, but also fights using some strange skills. That and the description he received convinced him that Northstar was his man or rather the woman he was searching for.

Sledge had heard about the bounty hunter called Northstar and to think that a woman could have the kind of reputation any man would wish, well he grew to admire this woman. His employer on the other hand is a powerful and ruthless man, and wasn’t sure why he was adamit on her return. But at the moment all he was thinking on was the money he would collect on her capture.

In Purgatory, Sledge enters the saloon and orders a whiskey. After riding for several days, he welcomes the warm whiskey he gets to quench his thirst. Sledge spots an old friend, who usually knows what new talent has pass through town. “Ola, Chico!”

The man in the black hat turns to look at the greigo calling out his name. He smiles, takes his hand out and shakes it. “Well, senior Sledge what brings you to our town?”

“Business, of course,” answers Sledge.

Both men walk over to a back table Sledge carries a full bottle of whiskey, hopefully to better ascertain information from Chico.

They toast, “to your health amigo!”

“And to yours, my friend.”

“Now how can I help you senior Sledge?”

With the cards out in the open Sledge answers. “I need information on any strangers passing through town, maybe two or three days ago. Quite sort, young about your height, thin build, might be wearing white. Oh, and rides a black stallion.”

He laughs, “you are in luck my friend, your stranger has indeed pass threw here. About two days ago, I wasn’t here to greet him, but from what the boys in town tell me a very bad hombre. He a friend of yours?”

“No, just some one I’ve been looking for, for a very long time.”

“I will give you some free advice, my friend. When you meet this stranger, make sure it’s from the back. They say he is very fast.”

“Don’t worry Chico, I’m not looking to kill, just return him home.”

Chico laughs, “then good luck to you mi amigo you will need it!”

*******

We now turn to another character in this story another man named Donavon Manning a cattle rancher from Kansas City. Most of the townspeople consider Manning a very powerful and ruthless man. The kind of man you don’t want as an enemy. For the last few years he has been failing; cancer is what the Doctors have told him, maybe another year maybe six months? Not something you wish to hear especially for someone like Manning.

He is determined to find Lily at any cost and will not rest until she’s found. He has had several men out looking for her. Manning received word from one of them, saying he may have found a lead on her whereabouts. He’ll get her back one way or another. We leave you for the moment wondering why Lily is so important.

*******

Returning to Four Corners, where Northstar has managed to stay a little while longer. When JD found out that the stranger is the legendary Northstar, who among other things is a bounty hunter, tracker, gunslinger, has manage to fit right in with the others. Nathan on the other hand is the only one who knows that Northstar is in fact a woman, who promised her he would not reveal her secret, he hates lying to his friends, but a promise is a promise.

It’s early morning, Nathan is walking along heading towards the saloon, and he sees JD and Northstar practicing their fast draw. He spots Chris sitting outside across the street watching them too.

Nathan walks over, “’morning Chris.”

“Morning Nathan you headed to the saloon?”

“Yeah, then I saw you, thought I’d invite you for breakfast.”

“Had my coffee for the day, not really hungry for anything else.”

Nathan looks over to JD and Northstar and comments. “He is fast!”

“That he is I never thought I'd see someone that fast, not trying to kill me.”

Nathan smiles; “worried someday that might happen.”

Chris remarks, “nah! If it happens it happens. Nothing you can do about it.”

JD looks over and sees his friends, he walks over, “well what did you think, that was pretty fast wasn’t it?”

Chris answers, “well looks to me as Northstar is still faster.”

“Well I hate to admit it but he is fast. But do you think I’m as fast as you Chris.” JD looks disappointed, “no rush Chris just wanted to make sure people stop calling me kid.”

Chris gets up; “Nathan is on his way to breakfast this morning, why don’t the both of you join him.”

Northstar looks at JD, “I don’t know about you JD, but I could use some vittles, my stomach is telling me its time.”

All three of them walk over to the saloon and Chris watches them go. He then looks over to the hotel and sees Ezra finally up. He walks over to him. “Well I see you’re up this morning.”

“Ah! Mr. Larabee your wonderful disposition as always is a marvel to contemplate on such an auscepision morning.”

Chris smiles, “as is your sarcasm Ezra. Buck’s already on patrol, you might want to join him this morning.”

“As you wish Mr. Larabee, frankly I don’t understand your apprehension of late.”

“I know; it’s just a gut feeling, it’s just been too quiet. I guess I’m more restless when it gets quiet.”

Ezra tips his hat and heads towards the livery stables. Chris heads to the hotel to get some sleep he and Vin were up all night patrolling. A few minutes later Ezra rides out of town on his horse.

While inside the saloon, the three boys are joined by Josiah. Who sits down in the middle of a discussion between Northstar and JD… “all I’m saying is that being fast and being a killer are two different aspects of being a bounty hunter. I always try to bring in my bounty alive, I only kill a man if he leaves me no other choice.”

“Alright and I agree with you, but putting yourself at risk and anyone else that might be with you can get pretty harry. After all you’re going after killers.”

“What about Vin? If I was to come into town looking to collect on Vin and shot him, what then. I know Eli Joe set him up after meeting him. But if I didn’t know it would be unfair to just shoot him down, simply because he happens to be wanted?”

With that JD was silent Northstar made her point? “I guess, I came in the middle of a lecture. It would appear that though young in appearance Northstar has wisdom as well.” Josiah gave a stern look at JD.

“I guess when you put it that way it’s best to bring in your prisoner in alive.” JD reluctley conceded.

*******

They continued with various topics of conversation. While on patrol outside of town we see Buck come across a stranger headed straight for Four Corners. He approaches the stranger with caution. “Morning!”

“Morning, that there the town called Four Corners?”

“Yes, you have business in town?”

“Not really just checking to see if a friend arrived ahead of me. It seems I keep missing her.”

The mere mention of a woman perks Buck’s ears. “Well, friend if there’s a new lady in town I’m bound to know her.”

“Well friend if she is in town I’d rather surprise her then alert her. I appreciate the offer though.” Then he pulled out his hand, “names Jeremy Sledge.”

“Buck Wilmington,” just then Ezra heads their way.

“Morning Buck, any trouble.” Ezra tips his hat, “Ezra Standish.”

“Ezra Standish, not the same Ezra that got into trouble back at Ft Laramie?”

“Oh, you heard of my rather unfortunate incarceration?”

“No, it was your rather your unique way of escape from prison, I hear the sheriff is still fuming over that event.”

Buck looks over to Ezra smiling, “really, you know Ezra has never mention just what happen in Laramie. How about I buy you a drink and you can tell me in detail what Ezra did?”

“Now Mr. Wilmington, I assure you that continuing our patrol of the territory is far more important than the circumstances of my arrest.”

Buck laughs, “one of these days Ezra some ones going to spill the beans?”

“Well then gentlemen I’ll leave you to continue your patrol. Mr. Wilmington I hope I’ll see you later for that drink.” Sledge tips his hat and heads towards town. Ezra gives Buck a stare that makes him laugh even more.

*******

Back in Kansas City, Donavon Manning is waiting for any news from Jeremy Sledge. He feels that his time is running out and isn’t too happy with the slow progress that any of his men have had on tracking Lily.

“Mrs. O’Reilly, come here?” A stocky woman from Ireland runs into the dinning room as her employer bellows for her to enter.

“Yes, Mr. Manning,” she answers with an Irish accent.

“You call this breakfast, the eggs are running, the bacon cold and the coffee is less than what I am use too. Take this away and bring me something that’ll be edible.”

Mrs. O’Reilly clears the table and leaves Mr. Manning returning to the kitchen to start over. Manning is left with only his thoughts on Lily and Sledge. If she doesn’t return willing then he will have to take matters into his own hands. Should anyone get in his way he will not hesitate to do what’s necessary to get her back.

He begins to recall when he first met Lily ten years ago, on a business trip to Boston. Lily was working at a carnival that arrived a few days earlier. She was reading palms, but also rode on her black stallion Dante. Both were part of the main cowboy and Indian show and Lily was practicing before the show that evening. Manning was passing by when he saw her. She was young and beautiful, light brown hair flowing effortless as she rode her horse, her skin slightly tan, as though she hadn’t been out of the sun for very long.

He stopped walking and stood watching her riding on her horse, and then she miss-stepped and fell off. Manning reacted right away running to help. When he reached Lily he bent to help her up and noticed a rather large gash on her arm; just as quickly though the gash was gone. Manning wasn’t even sure he had actually seen it? “Are you alright?”

“Yes, took the turn rather fast.” Dante quickly was by her side to protect her from this stranger if necessary. “Easy, boy I’m okay!” She quickly calmed her horse giving him a sugar cube to assure him. She offered her hand, “my name is Lily thank you for your concern Mr.?”

“Donavon Manning.” He took her hand shaking it. “Are you sure you’re all right? That was quite a nasty fall you took.”

“I assure you Mr. Manning that I am quite all right,” she was hoping that the deep cut she had closed before the gentleman saw, but she wasn’t sure he didn’t seem to react. “In fact, I would venture to say that the show for this evening will go on as plan. Perhaps you will attend the show this evening to insure my good health?”

“I would be honored, and perhaps you will join me for dinner later this evening after your performance?”

Lily accepted Manning’s gracious invitation, had she known the turn of events that would in sue afterwards, she would later find herself pondering those very thoughts.

So, Manning stayed in Boston longer than he had plan. Dinning every night with Lily after each performance. When it came time for the carnival to move on. He asked her to marry him.

“You are the most wonderful woman I have ever met. Would you do me the honor of accepting my proposal to be your husband.” Manning offered her the ring that once his father had given to his mother.

She had come to enjoy the time they had spent. The walks they took, although their conversations were always centered on her. She really didn’t know much about him. Only that he owned a cattle ranch in Kansas City, but nothing personal. Every time she tried to direct the conversation about him, he’d mention something small, but wouldn’t go into detail, and then he would turn to ask more about her. “Donavon, as much as your offer appeals to me. I really don’t know anything about you?”

“Lily, I’ve told you I own the largest spread in Kansas City. I have a powerful position in town what more can a man say. Everything you ever wanted would be yours for the asking. Now tell me what more can a woman desire?”

“I can’t speak for other women Donavon, but I know that’s not what I want. Above all else I wish to feel love. Not once did you offer me love.” She then returned the ring with tears in her eyes. “I am so sorry Donavon, but tomorrow I will be leaving with the carnival.”

Manning accepted the ring and Lily walked out of the restaurant. He clenched his hand so hard that he could feel the blood dripping, “if you won’t come willingly then you come with me one way or another.” He spoke those words so low no one heard. He opened his hand and took the napkin next to him and wiped the blood.

After he returned to Kansas City, he told a couple of his men that Lily was to be brought to him at any cost. Failure would be severely punished. He told them where to find her and for three years after that she was a prisoner. What she had to do in return was give him her blood. He knew that he was sick. Part of his trip to Boston was to see a specialist but when he saw how her wound healed right before his eyes. He knew she was his only salvation. But one of the hired hands took pity on her and helped her escape. She saw Manning kill the man; she said a silent prayer for his help and rode out on Dante who was never too far out of her sight.

Since then he had become obsessed with her return. Lily however, had to find a way to hide from him. Since part of her show was disguised as an Indian, she decided to change her appearance by cutting her hair and dressing like a man. She had already learned how to shoot and the years she had spent in the orient taught her how to fight. Lily also could adapt to any situation. Which helped her threw these past years as a bounty hunter. Becoming faster with any weapon as well as stronger. And so she became well known as Northstar. Taking the name from a story her mother once told her of a child born under the North Star.

*******

While Manning was thinking of Lily, so was she thinking of him and those years as a prisoner, now she was among friends. She wasn’t sure how long to stay or if by staying she would place any one in danger. She wanted that least of all.

Around mid-morning Sledge rode into town and headed towards the saloon for some whiskey. By this time the boys had finish breakfast and were off with their daily routine.

JD being the town sheriff was sitting outside the office checking the town making sure everything was going smoothly. Nathan was back in the clinic and Northstar had gone with him to help out. Josiah was working at the church and would stop to read a passage from one of the new books Mary received sent to her by Judge Travis or from friends she’d write to.

At the saloon, Sledge inquired about the arrival of any strangers. The bartender said that the only stranger new in town was Northstar a young bounty hunter who put on quite a show when he first arrived. “Put two bullets right inside the barrel of the other two boys’ guns.” This impressed Sledge. He was looking forward to meeting Miss Northstar.

As the day wore on Buck and Ezra came back into town. Ezra headed straight for the saloon hoping to start a little game of poker. Buck walked over to visit with JD and tell him more of his exploits, which he knows how upset JD gets at how more experience Buck is when it comes to women.

Later that evening all seven men were sitting together, playing a friendly game of poker when JD sees Northstar enter he waves his hands for her or rather him to join them. JD had explained to Northstar how to play the game. Northstar being a quick study, pick up the game in no time. Beating JD almost every time.

“Alright Ezra now you’ll see how good a teacher I am. This morning I showed Northstar how to play poker and he beat me on every hand.”

“Well JD, as you recall even my mother can beat you at cards, which doesn’t impress me on your teaching skills. Seeing is believing.” JD smirks and is itching for the game to begin and have Ezra eat those words.

As the game was going and each man was being eliminated, and although a friendly game Ezra usually came out ahead, was beginning to lose confidence on the out come of the game. When the final cards were taken and Northstar who never once change her face up the anti with ten dollars Ezra not willing to let JD have the last laugh calls, each of them putting down their cards Ezra holds two pairs with a duce Northstar four of a kind ace high. JD and Northstar each looked at one another smiling.

“You were right JD this poker game is really quite enjoyable.” With that the others laughed seeing how irritated Ezra looked. Northstar hadn’t realized she would cause such a reaction. So she laughed too.

“Well JD it would appear that you are quite the excellent teacher.” Which JD was more than happy to hear, noticing this Ezra continued his lecture. “However, you leave much to be desire as a student.” Which made the others laugh again and even Chris smiled.

“Very funny Ezra.”

Sledge entered the saloon just as Northstar had beaten Ezra at poker. After her first time playing the gamblers game, Ezra took it rather seriously. But before he could say anything Sledge had walked over towards their table and said hello to Buck.

“Evening gentlemen,” tipping his hat.

“Well Mr. Sledge I see you made it into town,” replied Buck.

Chris and the others looked over at the stranger then Buck introduced his companions to Jeremy Sledge including Northstar whom he had wanted to meet for almost a year. On seeing her he hadn’t realized how young she’d really be. Nor could he believe anyone could mistake her as a young man. Her face was kind of dirty but those eyes of hers were as oval as walnuts. She also has a natural beauty about her.

“Northstar? Not the same Northstar that caused quite the ruckus in Purgatory?” At this all her friends looked at him. JD especially wanted to hear about the incident.

“Really what happen,” inquired JD.

By this time Chris and Vin excused themselves so they could begin patrolling the town, Nathan had decided to call it a night, as did Josiah. Leaving only Ezra, Buck, JD and Northstar with Sledge.

“Well it seems your friend Northstar had a run in with the Anderson brothers, which he signal handily overpowered them in between drinks of whiskey no less.”

“Whoa, why didn’t you tell us?” JD was so excited to hear more stories of Northstar who had been impress by everything he did.

“I’m afraid bragging on ones exploits are not what I like to choose in having conversation with friends.”

“So Mr. Sledge have you found your friend,” asked Buck.

I’m afraid not as yet. I guess my employer Mr. Manning will be disappointed in me for not being able to catch up with her.”

Ezra looked at Sledge and commented, “would that be Donavon Manning from Kansas City Mr. Sledge?”

At this turn of events Northstar was looking both at Ezra and Sledge. Why would he comment on Manning out of the blue? Did he know who I was? Was he waiting for me to make a move? How does Ezra know Manning?

“You know Mr. Manning, Mr. Standish?”

“Unfortunately, He and I had an altercation when I became involved with his daughter.”

Northstar had never heard Manning ever mention a daughter. She was never there at the house when Northstar lived there. Was she also a prisoner? Or perhaps lived away from the house?

“I never met his daughter, or his mistress which is who I am looking for. It seems she has runaway with quite a bit of Mr. Manning’s money and has hired me to locate and bring her and the money back.”

Northstar gave Sledge a cold stare; she stood up excused herself and left the saloon.

Sledge looked at her and commented, “what’s wrong with him it seems as though he took my situation personally.”

“It would appear that Northstar doesn’t approve of trackers chasing after women who have stolen money from men. Northstar you see is a bounty hunter and prefers harden criminals to damsels in distress. Frankly, I applaud the young lady for leaving that tyrant and taking what she could.” Ezra commented.

“I’ll have to apologize to him later.”

Which surprised Ezra and Buck both noticed the look on Northstar’s face when Manning’s name was mention and Buck was surprise to learn of Ezra’s involvement with his daughter.

JD during this conversation was listening to the others comments and also noticed Northstar’s reaction. Even more interesting was the fact that for a moment there, he noticed that Northstar looked more like an angry woman. He had been spending a lot of time with him and never noticed before until he saw her angry eyes.

Northstar was going to see Nathan, but saw his room was dark. She had to talk with someone, but whom. Then she saw that the church lights were still on and walked over to talk with Josiah. She approached the entrance and went in, she saw Josiah reading one of his books.

“Josiah?”

“Come in child, you look troubled?”

“I need your advice, Josiah and I’m not sure how to begin.”

“Always begin at the beginning.”

With that she told him the story of how she met Manning and how she escaped and confessed to him about her gender deception, which was a lot to take in.

Josiah didn’t know just what to say, “you’re a woman?”

Northstar smiled and said yes. “I didn’t want to deceive any one, but I had to be careful and now there is a man in town looking for me. I have the feeling he knows the truth about me and is being coy. Trying to catch me off guard.”

“You know we’ll stand by you, to protect you if needed.”

“That’s not what I want Josiah, the thought of any one of you getting hurt because of me… well, that’s even worst then going back to that monster. No, I think it would be best if I just left town before anything bad really happens.”

“So you’re just going to run from this?”

“I have no choice Josiah, I’ve lied to JD about killing. The truth is I’ve been lucky. No one I’ve gone after was killed or any by stander as well. I took pride in that now that pride would have me confront killing a man? I’m at a crossroad Josiah. I don’t want to go back to him but I also don’t wish to kill him.”

“Why is he obsessed with you?”

She looked at Josiah and knew she had to trust him. “It’s not me pursey, but what I’m able to do. I have never told a living soul about what I am about to tell you. My blood is very special it can heal my wounds faster then any person’s. This same blood can be used to heal others. That’s why Manning want’s me back, he’s dying and by using my blood it can prolong his life.”

Josiah looked at Northstar, “there’s more isn’t there?”

“Yes, the healing powers I posses are only one side affect of my blood, it has prolong my life for many years. I may not look it but I am close to three thousand years old. I am almost immortal I simply age more slowly then most.”

She knew that all this information was even more to digest. She could see it in his eyes. “You mean to tell me that you’re even older than I am?”

She laughed a bit, “yes.”

“I can’t believe this, this is the most incredible story I have ever heard. There are so many questions I would like to ask you. But I guess now would not be the time, please go on.”

“Years ago my family and their people lived in peace. Our way of life was far more advance then anything you could image. Poverty and sickness were abolition our people were mediators between other neighboring clans. Greed and power were never conceived of, for there was no reason for it. Everyone was happy with what they had. Until one day all that changed there was a great earthquake, which destroyed our homes, dividing the other clans and distancing everyone. In time, people forgot us we became more of a myth and most of my people died because of fire or drowning. Those that survived were spread throughout different lands that they had to adept new ways of life. One thing however, did not change and that was our healing abilities, as well as our longevity.”

“Who were your people?”

“People of Atlantis!” Josiah was even more astonished then before. A survivor of Atlantis, the fable island city that sank to the ocean. How could one ever expect to meet such a person? Or even believe such a story. But Josiah believed he could see it in her eyes, those eyes that brought truth to her origin.

*******

The next morning Sledge sent the telegram waiting for instructions on how to proceed, he told Manning how seven men protect the town. A few hours later the return telegram said only that he was on his way. All he could do was wait and see. He had the feeling that what he just did was a grave mistake one that he felt sure he would regret.

At this time Northstar was packing her bags when a knock at the door startled her. She opened the door with her gun drawn to find JD on the other side. “What’s wrong JD?”

“Are you a woman?”

She was taken aback, she didn’t think Josiah or Nathan would have told him, so somehow he must have realized it on his own. She had become good friends with JD she owed it to him to come clean. “Yes.” Northstar saw in his eyes how disappointed he was. “Does it make that much of a difference JD?”

“Yes it does, I’ve told you things I haven’t said to anyone. I trusted you, then I told you how I felt about Casey.”

“I know JD and I should have trusted you. My only excuse is I really wasn’t planning on staying this long. But your confidences are safe with me.” They were both silent, neither of them knew what to say. A trust had been broken and Northstar didn’t know how to make amends. JD looked at her and then headed towards the door.

“JD! I’m truly sorry for the deception; I didn’t want to hurt any one least of all you. Please believe me!” JD didn’t respond and just walked out. Northstar was left more alone then she had ever felt before.

*******

Manning finally would have Lily back. He had been feeling poorly these last couple of months. Now that he knew where she was his spirits lifted up. He would continue to live and not worry about death for a very long time and should those seven men pose a problem he would have enough men with him to handle the situation. Lily belonged to him and that’s all that mattered.

*******

Northstar felt too drain to go anywhere today. She felt bad about JD and the thought of Manning finding her. It was just too much. How she longed for the days in the circus. The thrill of seeing the spectators in ah of her performances. Those were indeed happier times. There was a knock at her door again. She got up off her bed. Right away she thought it was JD and rush to open the door. It was Sledge.

“Good morning Miss Northstar. I hope I’m not disturbing you?” He walked right in without being asked. “I’d like you to know that this isn’t personal, strictly business. I’ve wired Mr. Manning and he is on his way. However, if you plan to leave don’t. I think I’ve come to know Manning and he’ll hurt these people if you go.”

She looked at him with a cold hard stare, “you have no idea what you’ve done do you Mr. Sledge? Or the kind of man Mr. Manning really is.”

“All I need know Miss Northstar is that he’s paying me ten thousand dollars.”

Northstar looked at him with contempt, “get out Mr. Sledge!”

Sledge got up and walked out the door as he was opening the door he turnaround. “Just remember Miss Northstar if you leave there will be hell to pay.” With that he left and closed the door behind him.

Now she was trapped, he was right though if she left he would destroy this town and he has the manpower to do it. Northstar had to plan something, she couldn’t continue to allow this man to live. He was a very dangerous man and she would have to deal with him or risk the lives of her friends.

*******

During the next morning men began to arrive in small amounts as if from a cattle drive. This wasn’t unusual for the people of Four Corners. This was a regular occurrence, which didn’t worry the seven men.

However, from her window Northstar knew that trouble was coming and she would have to play her cards and hope she could bluff her way out of this situation without any of these good people getting hurt.

Buck noticed JD was pretty quite this morning and both silently were watching as more cowboys arrived and entered the saloon, which made Ezra happy as he had a good card game going. Nathan was visiting with Josiah helping at the church with no patients both men were hard at work, but they too noticed the abundance of men coming in.

Both Chris and Vin were catching up on sleep from the nights patrol so when they were both up and headed to the saloon they felt a little uneasy to see that at least 15 maybe 20 men were gambling, drinking and having various conversation inside. They took seats near the entrance watching all the cowboys; Chris looked over to Ezra warning of possible trouble. Ezra nodded to Chris and Vin that he be ready.

*******

It was well pass seven o’clock in the evening when Northstar saw Manning finally arrive, she went downstairs after seeing him enter the saloon. She entered the saloon and proceeded slowly then looked around to see where Manning had seated himself. One of his men stood from his chair and let Manning sit right next to Ezra, Sledge had eventily informed him of Ezra’s presence in town. “Why Mr. Manning how unfortunate to have to see you again.”

Then Northstar made her way towards Manning she had both her guns loaded and ready for anything. Manning looked up and smiled. He stood up and his men at the table were ready too. Ezra didn’t like what was going on. Chris and Vin felt it too, but they were across the saloon. Just then Buck and JD came in from patrol and walked towards the bar Buck looked over to Chris and saw him motion with his eyes over to the other side of the saloon. Both Buck and then JD tense. Nathan and Josiah had been sitting not too far from where Chris and Vin were and also noticed that something was about to happen.

“Good evening Miss Lily, glad you could make it.” Ezra on hearing miss wasn’t sure what Manning was talking about he then looked at Northstar and for the first time noticed what he meant. “But you’re not surprise to see me how disappointing.”

Lily gave a cold hard stare, “I knew eventually you’d find me. The sooner we get this over the better.”

“Then why don’t you follow me outside and we can leave this town peacefully.”

“No, you miss-understand me. I have no intention of leaving here with you. In fact, I would hazard to say that one of us won’t be leaving hear alive.” Just then his men stood up. Northstar didn’t budge. The seven men on seeing all this realized they were out numbered.

Chris then stood up and headed over to Northstar, “what’s going on here?”

Manning looked over to Chris, as he approached, “nothing that need concern you sir!”

“Anything to do with this town concerns me.”

“I’m sorry to hear that sir.” He turns his attention to his men. “Boys please escort this gentleman out the door.” Just then the most incredible thing happen. Northstar took advantage of the situation took both her peacemakers out and began shooting at the saloon window shattering it. Then jumps outside roles under the hitching posts and whistles for her horse and were racing out of town, before Manning had a chance to react.

“Dam’it, grab your horses men and get after her. The rest of you disarm these men and hold them we’ll use them. Once Lily realizes that her friends are in trouble she’ll be back.”

Chris didn’t know what was going on, what he did know was that they were over matched and out gunned. He singled his men to do nothing yet. “Why do you want Northstar?”

“So, is that who she’s calling herself, no wonder it took so long to find her. Who would believe the legendary Northstar was in fact a woman disguised as a man.” He laughed something the seven men didn’t like.

Manning’s men walked over to each of the men and disarmed them, however they were unaware of Ezra’s derringer neatly tucked in his sleeve. “I believe you heard Mr. Larabee what is it you wish of Miss Northstar.”

Manning looked over at Ezra, “my dear Ezra it has been far too long since last we met. A pity that your departure was so abrupt.”

“At the time you wished me dead, I saw no reason to stay.”

“Ah, so true Mr. Standish. It is unfortunate though that Anna Belle did not fair as well.”

Ezra was startled by his remark. “What do you mean?”

“Your precious Anna Belle was whisked away to England where she resides in an asylum for the insane. I hold all her financial interest and I have you to thank. She was so heart broken at your departure that she gave no residence to her own blight.”

Ezra was caught off guard. The look on his face told it all, he had no idea that an innocent child had suffered so much because of him. “How could you, to your own daughter.”

“Stepdaughter Mr. Standish, no daughter of mine would have given you a second thought.”

Ezra wanted to sit down and die of shame. Instead Manning angered him and he pulled out his derringer from his sleeve and pointed at him. “Tell your men to back away from my compatriots, unless of course you will do me the honor of killing yourself.”

Manning laughed, “do you believe you have the upper hand Mr. Standish? Ezra smiled. “Then go ahead and shoot me!” Ezra was about to do just that when Sledge decided to make his move. Ezra cocked his pistol and Sledge pulled his own gun and shot Ezra’s hand disarming him and shattering the mechanism holding the derringer in place. Chris made a move to Ezra, but Sledge interceded.

“I’m afraid Mr. Larabee that we hold all the cards.”

Manning had had enough of Ezra and his friends and decided to take it out on him, while Ezra was nursing his wound Manning hit him across the face knocking him down, but he wasn’t quite finish. He then grabbed him pushed him to the wall and started choking him. Sledge went over to him. “If you want the girl back, hurting her friends will make things worse, don’t you think?” With that Manning released Ezra and he fell to the floor gasping for air.

“Take these bastards out of my sight and secure them. I don’t want any of them to get away.”

Sledge and some of Manning’s men took hold of the boys and headed to the jail where they locked them up.

Nathan went over to Ezra to check his hand his medical kit was at the clinic. “One of you boys want to get my medical kit from the clinic upstairs so I can help my friend?”

One of the men looked at his partner, “you ever hear of a black doctor?” They both started to laugh.

Sledge then motion to one of the men. “Do as the man says and get his kit!” They both stopped laughing and one of them went outside and to the clinic. Sledge went to the cell and asked for Ezra. “How’s he doing?”

“I’ll be find Mr. Sledge, but you should be more worried about yourself. You should have let me kill the madman.”

“Sorry Standish, but you still would have been out numbered. And right now the one who needs our help is Northstar.” They all looked at him. “I don’t like this any more than you boys, but we’re going to have to see if Northstar has a plan.”

They all realized that he spoke the truth. Chris had been wondering the same thing especially when she waltz right in knowing that he was there looking for her in the first place. Running may have been part of her plan as to the rest all they could do was wait and see.

Vin walked over to Chris, “what do you think she’s up to?” It was funny to say she, when only a few minutes ago they found out about the deception.

“I wish I knew Vin, she’s very resourceful and I have no doubt that she has a back up plan.”

Then Buck said, “if she had any sense she’d keep running!”

Most of them thought the same, but they knew better. No matter what the consequences she’d be back. All of them liked her and respected her. JD right now was the most worried there last conversation wasn’t on good terms. He wished for an opportunity to apologize.

Nathan received his medical kit and bandage Ezra’s hand. It was sore but he’d heal.

However, Ezra thoughts now were on Anna Belle. He should never have left her. All his life he’d been running from one thing or another. But ever since he met these men things changed for him. He finally felt that he could make a difference. They all felt that way, since that first time when they helped the Seminole Village they just clicked. It made them more than just friends. It made them a team.

*******

Outside of town Northstar's plan was to make a run for it and get as many men out of town looking for her as possible. She’d return first thing in the morning looking distraught and for the stake of her friends had to play it as though she were defeated. She hid at the old abandon church where JD had told her they first met Josiah. No one would think to look for her there. Dante her horse had good visual sight and had no problem finding the place. The others she hoped would be more afraid about heading back to town without her then have to face their master’s wrath.

Northstar then began mixing several ingredients she had collected to put into motion her plans. By a small fire she had started, she placed the mixture in a pot and stirred. Making sure every inch of the formula blended. Earlier she had taken one of Nathan’s needles and when the liquid cooled she filled. She wasn’t sure the plan would work. Surviving was not in her favor. But for her the survival of the town and her friends took priority. “This plan has to work!”

The one thing her people could not survive was heat. It is the only thing that breaks down their blood cells boiling their blood and destroying it. The chemical compound she was mixing would also begin boiling her blood the same way fire would. She knew Manning would wish to inject himself right away with her blood, inside his body it too would then begin to destroy his blood cell there by killing him.

She would rest for a few hours before heading back into town. At first light she climbed up Dante and rode off towards town. She wasn’t ready to inject herself, so waited just outside of town she had a few minutes to reflect on what she was about to try. Then injected herself and began to ride into town. The first lookout spotted her and rang the church bell alerting Manning of her arrival. All the townspeople were securely located inside their businesses or homes. The seven men were still inside the jail cells.

Manning walked over to the jail and told his men, “Bring them out and make sure they can’t escape.”

Three of his men took each of the seven and cuffed them with their hands behind so they would pose no trouble. They were all brought out to show Northstar that for the moment they were safe. Each of them looked at her, she seemed defeated and it hurt them more than they would ever admit.

About ten feet away from Manning she got off her horse and held onto his reins. “If I give you my word to return with you will you promise to let my friends go?”

“Of course, all I ever wanted was you safely back with me.”

She sighed, “then I shall go back with you when you are ready.”

“Very good my dear,” he walked over to her and brought along his Doctor. While this was going on Ezra was picking the cuff’s lock. Even though he could not see the lock he was sensitive to its vibration just like his sensitivity to a deck of cards. The men watching them were busy looking at their boss wondering what really was going on.

Just then Ezra broke free of his cuffs took the gun off one of the men nearest him and ran towards Manning. Two of his other men who also approached Northstar blocked him wrestle and took the gun. She looked at him and smiled, “it’s alright Ezra don’t worry about me.”

She said with such dignity and grace it about broke his heart. He watched as the Doctor took her blood and then injected Manning with it. Her blood was a natural serum to any affliction or sickness you could have. Ezra saw what was going on, “what are you doing to her?”

“Curing myself Mr. Standish.” He then looked at Lily. “I will soon know immortality because of you my dear.”

She had a very sinister smile as Manning closed his eyes and felt the elixir of life flowing through his veins when just as suddenly he bent over in pain clutching his abdomen. “What’s happening?” He looked at Lily. “What have you done witch?”

“What I should have done a long time ago.” She walked up to Manning and whispered in his ear, “kill you!” He looked at her in utter horror. The pain was becoming intolerable. He fell to his knees as his men began to panic.

“What the hell’s going on?”

Lily looked at the men surrounding her friends and the ones around the town. “You want to know what’s going on? I’ll tell you, justice has at last prevailed. You men would do well to leave my friends and this town. For what happens to your master will happen to you!” She looked at the three men holding her friends. “You men take those cuffs off my friends.” They did as told, then Manning screamed and his men backed away from him and just as one of them was about to speak, you could see red blisters begin to form on Manning’s skin.

They began to back further one of them yelled, “let’s get the hell out of here.” Manning screamed again he keeled over and started twitching on the ground, which prompted his men to grab their horses and ride. This included the Doctor who didn’t want to see the end result.

Lily gazes at Manning and took pity, but what else could she do? The extra time he was given served only to inflict more pain on innocent people. Ezra watched Northstar and noticed her wicken state and grab her. “Northstar?” “I’m dying Ezra! I had to poison myself to poison Manning. My pain won’t be as severe as Manning’s.” She almost fell to the ground but Ezra held her tight and then lifted her up in his arms.

“Nathan we should take her to the clinic, see if you can help her.”

Nathan helped Ezra as both men headed for the clinic. Then Chris turned his attention to his men, “Buck, Vin and JD ride out and make sure we don’t have any stragglers.”

“What about Manning, Chris?”

“Josiah and I will watch him, I don’t think he’ll be doing any more damage.” Buck looked at Chris then Manning. He motion to the others and they grab their horses and rode off after Manning’s men. Josiah and Chris watched as Manning’s body began to boil ‘til it began to peel itself from his own bones and even that began to turn into dust, then a breeze blew threw town and with it what was left of Manning. Neither of the men said a word.

*******

An hour later Buck and the others returned. Chris and Josiah were in the saloon with a bottle of whiskey already half-finished everything seem back to normal. The town’s people didn’t see what happen to Manning. “Chris have you heard from Nathan?”

“He and Ezra are still with Northstar and Manning just turn to dust before our very eyes.” The others didn’t know what to make of that. They just sat down, the bartender came over and brought extra glasses and pour them some more whiskey. They waited to hear from Nathan on the condition of their mysterious friend. Just then the last of the seven men arrived and sat with the five men already seated.

“We lost her a few minutes ago.” Nathan looked at his friends. “There was nothing I could do. I wasn’t even sure of what to do.”

She had fought to overcome the heat her body was emanating, but was unsuccessful. It had happened so fast. Nathan closed both her eyes and he and Ezra headed to the saloon to inform their friends.

“You did what you could my friend. That’s all any of us can do.” Josiah took another drink of whiskey.

“The last thing I said to her was in anger. I was mad at her for lying to me. I thought her a better man than me. But she wasn’t even a man!” JD’s eyes were welling up. None of the men said anything each was deep in their own thoughts about Northstar.

*******

While upstairs in the clinic Lily’s body was beginning to cool off. Her blood that a few minutes ago were boiling began to cool. That same blood was rejuvenating itself. Before the body began to deteriorate it had begun to live again. Slowly the body was repairing itself. In essence the healing process was taking place. Then suddenly she began to breathe again. Her body moved her hands twitch and clench. Her eyes blinked once, twice until she opened them wide. Looking around her surroundings she called out, “Ezra… Nathan!” She then got up and tried to get off the bed almost falling, she was still weak. Death is not an easy event to over come.

Northstar regain more composure and tried again. “It worked! I’m alive!” She walked out to the reception room and called out again, “Ezra… Nathan!” But no response then she realized her friends must be drinking whiskey in her honor. At that she smiled. She loved those boys and hope they wouldn’t be too disappointed on her miraculous recovery. With her strength returning she walked out and headed downstairs.

******* Lily had not told all her story to Josiah. Her people were not born with their healing abilities. The people of Atlantis were so advanced that everything they created was to make life easier for them. Then they began to expand their ideas into advancing not only their science but also medicine. Soon they found a micro cell within the blood stream that was dormant, so they awaken it.

What happens next was something their medical team was not expecting. The cell that was awakened began to rejuvenate the other cells. So they tested themselves, which began to slow down their aging processes.

But what they did, had other consequence the clan’s people they mediate for found out about their immortality medicine and they too demanded some for themselves. The people of Atlantis had no reason to deny their request. However, their efforts worked in reverse instead of activating the cell it began to destroy the clan’s. The scientist had made a mistake they had assumed they all had the same blood cell, but discovered too late just how different they really were. This angered the clan’s and they revolted destroying Atlantis with their own scientific devices. So strong were these devices that they literally sank Atlantis into the ocean. Those that escaped never reveled to anyone who they were for fear of persecution and the cell which was awaken became a heritage handed down to their children. Their lives were extended and that burden was handed down to their children.

They realized too late that their experiment had angered their own creator there by sealing their fate to exile. There was one consolation although the cell could not be awaken in other people the Atlantian blood could still heal normal mortals. So, they continued to help were ever possible.

*******

The boys were so absorbed in their drinking that they didn’t notice a loan figure walk into the saloon and order a bottle of whiskey and a glass. Then she headed towards them.

“Is this a private party or can anyone join.”

They all looked up at the sound of her voice at first they didn’t react. The first thing they thought too much whiskey. They blinked, “Northstar?” JD had stood up couldn’t believe his eyes. “Is it really you?”

“JD you are looking at a living monument that wishes do come true.” With that they hugged and laughed. The others did the same. Chris wasn’t sure what to make of this but he took his turn none the less. Sledge was also in the saloon, but not sitting with the seven men. He saw Northstar and couldn’t believe his eyes either. He walked over to their table.

“I don’t believe it you’re alive? How?”

“I guess being strong helped and praying didn’t hurt.” She smiled at them and their looks of astonishment. “Explaining won’t help, it’s just the way my blood works. I couldn’t tell you what I was planning because I had no idea if it would work. I didn’t want to give any false hopes.”

“Little lady I’m just glad you’re alive, because I wanted to apologize for all that happen. I never realize how mad he really was.”

“Well Mr. Sledge, that’s all in the past. But I could use your help on finding his daughter. Seems to me she would be inheriting quite a fortune.”

“You were not here when Mr. Manning told me that his daughter had been placed in an asylum. Of all places England.” You could see the pain in Ezra’s face.

“All the more reason to find her.”

“How do you proposal to find her. It will be like looking for a needle in a haystack.”

“Take heart Mr. Standish, for Manning was nothing if not orderly. He would have kept records. I also know the name of his lawyer. So don’t worry I’ll find her.”

“Then let me go with you!” The others looked at Ezra. To think he’d leave. The others weren’t sure they like that. But they knew none of them were obligated to stay.

“No Ezra you’re needed here. Mr. Sledge and I can handle it. But we will let you know when we find her. I promise.” He felt relief with that.

“After everything, you’d want my help?”

“Why not, who better to find a needle in a haystack, then the man who found me!”

*******

Northstar stayed a full week recovering in Four Corners. JD was happy to have made peace with her, and the rest would certainly miss her. This time instead of shaking hands with them she had the opportunity to hug and kiss them all goodbye. She had come into town a stranger, but was leaving more than just a friend but a comrade, and as both Northstar and Sledge rode off. Each of the seven men hoped that one day she’d return.

THE END
