a love like this before
Leo and Piper's love is classic. Like most of the best romantic tales in literature, it began as forbidden love. Piper was the earthy and creative middle sister who suddenly, along with her sisters, discovers that they were destined to save the world from evil. Leo was a whitelighter, sent by the powerful Founders to guide new witches. He was not sent to fall in love with her. That was a big no-no. But hearts cannot be dictated to, and against their will the two fell so deeply, so irreversibly, that they would challenge the powerful forces who would tear them apart. Leo entered the Halliwell sisters' lives as a handyman. Phoebe and Piper competed for his attention. It wasn't exactly deep abiding love at first glance. It was more of physical attraction. At least in the first season, that was how it seemed like. There was no real foreshadowing of anything else. It so happened that Leo was attracted to Piper too, and the love whose very concept we are in awe of took off with a half-remembered under-the-spell kiss and a giggly run to the bedroom. It became apparent that there was more to the handyman than the viewers first thought. Soon, we are treated to the new and unique exit that he, and parts of him, are now known for. Those magical light blue lights are called orbs. While we cheer on that this guy is supernatural, we're also brokenhearted to learn that their love cannot be. And when he leaves, with no real idea when he will return, we are saddened by the lost hope that Leo and Piper can be together. And then at the end of the first season he returns, wounded and dying. That episode has us all in happy tears as Piper finally admits her love. The forbidden aspect still remained unsolved, and makes for a more exciting wait. Season two was filled with the biggest despairs and the most exhilarating triumphs for the two. A love triangle was introduced, and for a moment there the Piper and Leo connection seemed so strong yet so impossible. Piper was involved with Dan when it seemed that nothing will come out of her love for Leo. He was a nice enough guy, and she did love him too. Yet nothing will ever compare to the love she feels for Leo, which as we discovered spans lifetimes. And so Piper chooses him over Dan, and they decide to fight for their love, and the right to be together. She orbs up to heaven with him to meet his bosses. In contrast to the cheerful note that the second season
ended with, the start of season three appeared dim for the lovers. We first
see them fighting, and learn that the Elders have given them the ultimatum
to split up or never see each other again. Leo and Piper desperately tries
to "run an end run" and are discovered, resulting to a violent removal
of Leo from the wedding ceremony. Piper learns to be unselfish, and to
put her job before herself and Leo, and he is returned to her in a probationary
manner. When they finally prove themselves worthy, they are allowed to
marry in one of the most memorable episodes in Charmed. In the episodes
leading to the finale, we find them growing closer together, if that were
even possible, and depending on the other more and more. This is why the
scene of him grieving for her loss in the finale strikes such a chord in
our hearts.
As Season 4 begins, we see Piper's deep sense of loss,
and how Leo helps her through it. With the rages and depression, Leo's
presence and love does not falter. As an audience we wait and see if he
can pull her back. Will their love be enough to set their lives right after
an unspeakable tragedy? There is only one truth we know -- and that
is of the extent, the depth and height that their love has spanned, delved
and soared.
