Wolf and Virginia: Dancing Cheek to Cheek
by Tamysan

They were in the small apartment they shared together and Wolf had recently discovered that fascinating object - the television.

"So this is - tela -?"

"Television." Virginia said as she walked towards the battered couch. In her hand she held a bowl of buttered popcorn and in the other, a video.

Wolf had the remote and Virginia wondered if remote control handling was in the genes of all men - wolf or human. Wolf was clicking away at the multitude of channels.

"It's so fascinating..." He stared at the screen. "It's like looking through a lot of mirrors at the same time."

"Well not everything is real on it," Virginia said.

"Not even on - uh - Springer?" Wolf asked.

"ESPECIALLY Springer..." Virginia giggled, setting down the popcorn on the coffee table.

"Well huffpuff, it certainly looked real to me...'I was a teen-age bi-sexual stripper..." he mused, still channel surfing.

"Come on, let me have the remote. I have a great movie on that you'll like."

"Movie?" Wolf asked. "Oh yeah! Like a play!"

"Exactly..." Virginia said, taking the remote. She promptly put the movie in the VCR and after all the disclaimer junk, the movie started. They watched it quietly and Wolf seemed to be studying it. Finally after awhile, he asked, "Where is the color? It's all in grays..." He looked at the couple on the screen.

"Oh, that's an old movie. They made them in black and white a long time ago."

"Ah, I see," Wolf said. "And those two? They seem to be in love..."

"Actually they're actors pretending to be in love. The man there is - was Fred Astaire and the woman with him is Ginger Rogers." Virginia rather liked this movie. It was sappy but it had carried her through a lot of lonely Friday nights.

"...Well I certainly don't..." Ginger replied to Fred.

"Neither do I, all I know is..."

"Heaven...I'm in Heaven...
and my heart beats so that I can hardly see...
And I seem to find the happiness I feel
when we're out together dancing cheek to cheek

And the cares that hung around me though the week
seem to vanish like a gamblers' lucky streak
When we're out together dancing cheek to cheek.

Oh I'd love to climb a mountain..and to reach the highest peak
but it doesn't thrill me half as much as dancing cheek to cheek...

Oh I love to go out fishing in a river or creek
but I don't enjoy it half as much as dancing cheek to cheek

Dance with me...I want my arms about you...
the charm about you will carry me though
To Heaven, I'm in Heaven
and my heart beats so that that I can hardly see...
And I seem to find the happiness I feel
when we're out together dancing cheek to cheek

"Look, they're dancing..." Wolf smiled.

"Yes they are..." Virginia smiled. How often she had gotten lost in the romance of it all just for a moment.

"You can play this back, can't you?" Wolf asked.

Virginia was surprised. "Well I can, but..."

"Please?" Wolf gave her a smile.

"Well, all right." Virginia stopped the tape and started to rewind. Wolf laughed at the way everyone went backwards. When it got to a certain point, Wolf said, "Stop - er pause or whatever it is..."

Virginia suspected that he liked this part as much as she did. But Wolf surprised her. He got up and extended his hand.

"What?" Virginia looked up at him.

"Dance with me..." Wolf smiled.

"But there's no - oh I see..." Virginia smiled back. He wanted to dance with the tape. She was thrilled that he could be so romantic. Virginia got up and Wolf took her to a small area of the living area that was not cluttered. Virginia started the tape and Fred Astaire started to croon. Wolf held her close and surprised her again when he sang along with the tape.

"Heaven...I'm in Heaven...and my heart beats so that I can hardly see..." he sang in a rich low voice. "And I seem to find the happiness I feel when we're out together dancing cheek to cheek..." He gave her a light kiss briefly and continued to sing softly and lowly, "Heaven..I'm in Heaven..and the cares that hung around me though the week seem to vanish like a gamblers' lucky streak when we're out together dancing cheek to cheek..."

They slowly danced in time to that old rhythm while Fred and Ginger cavorted on the screen, lost in each other's eyes. Ah, but Virginia knew the words too. She smiled into his eyes and she started to sing, "Oh I'd love to climb a mountain...and to reach the highest peak but it doesn't thrill me half as much as dancing cheek to cheek...Oh I love to go out fishing in a river or a creek but I don't enjoy half as much as dancing cheek to cheek..."

Their foreheads were touching now and she could see the joy and intensity in Wolf's eyes. "Dance with me..I want my arm about you..." he sang. His arms moved to her waist and tightened. "...the charm about you will carry me though...To Heaven...I'm in Heaven and my heart beats so that that I can hardly see..." Wolf whispered softly in her ear which gave Virginia a delicious shiver. "And I seem to find the happiness I feel when we're out together dancing cheek to cheek.." Virginia whispered softly, almost unable to speak, the feeling for him was so intense.

They rocked together as the music continued to play and Fred and Ginger did their eternal dance. Virginia and Wolf slowed their steps and they kissed, blocking out everything but the beating of their hearts and intangible touching of their souls.

After that, Wolf carried her to their bedroom and later, after their lovemaking, she cuddled with him as he gave her forehead a sweet kiss and stroked her slightly rounded belly where their unborn child was dwelling.

"What are you thinking, love?" Wolf asked, for Virginia was so quiet.

Virginia looked up at Wolf and smiled.

"Heaven...I'm in Heaven...and my heart beats so that I can hardly see..." she softly sang.

Wolf laughed softly and gave his beloved a kiss...

End!
