Dare to Eat, Drink, or Sleep
by Natacia Louvier

The morning is cold but
the dew is still warm.
Light is low, barely able to
break through the tree canopy.

Thick with foliage surrounded
by many years of growth,
has trees and limb and vines intertwined
into a confusing maze.

Beautiful is the gaze of you
a stranger would have.
You would not know about
the danger and deception that waits.

All over are hidden traps;
you hear a whisper
It sounds like a warning
but the tone is hauntingly beautiful.

Don't take a drink,
don't take a bit,
don't listen to our song
If you don't plan to stay long.

The saying keeps repeating itself
over and over. You turn
to hear the voice better only to tumble
in deeper in the foils of the tree maze.

As your sight grows hazy
you fall next to a pond.
You splash some water on your face
and some water is swallowed.

Too tired to get up, you lay back
next to a log with mushrooms.
Peering over, you reach for one
and tentivaly take a bite.

The taste is sweet, you close your eyes
savoring this new taste and feel peaceful.
With a deep breath, sleep comes
and takes over you, body and mind.

A vine starts to grow and wraps itself
around your body until you're covered completely.
In the background of the Deadly Swamp
the voice continues its haunting melody.

You took a drink
you took a bite
You listened to our song
Now you will stay with us forever.
