Snow fell outside, blanketing the roof of the cottage with a sparkling coat. Frost tinted the decorated windows and a cold gust of wind caused the falling snow to swirl around the yard. Inside, the fire crackled and popped as another log caught fire while bathing the room with a warm glow. A tall evergreen stood decked in the corner, the colorful lights the only other source of light in room. Presents rested underneath the tree, the shiny wrapping paper reflecting the fires glow. Tomorrow that paper would litter the floor as their contents were displayed, but tonight the house was still and the presents remained untouched.

Two red and green coffee mugs sat on the table, the hot coco in them had long since cooled. Gloves and hats lie next to them, along with the paper from an early Christmas gift. Soft Christmas music floated through the room, which went unnoticed by the two people resting on the couch. A flannel blanket resting across their laps, Luis tightened his grip around Sheridan waist, a content smile spreading on her face as she buried her head in Luis’s chest and drifted deeper into sleep.

Luis’s eyes fluttered open and after a few blinks he looked down at the woman asleep in his arms. A brilliant smile lit his face as he watched her chest rise and fall with each breath. Sometimes when he’d wake up before her, Luis would just watch Sheridan sleep. Such a little thing gave him such joy. After everything that happened, Luis found himself saying a little pray of thanks every time he saw her take a breath. Every touch, every kiss, every precious moment they spent together was like a wonderful dream.

His stomach always tightened and he could feel the sting of tears just thinking that he could have lost her. He would be lost without her; she was his life. Shaking his head to get rid of the bad thoughts he fastened his eyes back on Sheridan. Bending his head down he kissed the top of her head, letting his lips linger in her soft hair, his nostrils filling with her scent. Closing his eyes, Luis let himself get lost in the feel of her in his arms. Sheridan sighed happily in her sleep and took hold of Luis’s hands, pressing them against her. Luis lifted his head and watched as she held his hands, her silky touch making his skin tingle.

Luis’s eyelids grew heavy after a while and slowly drooped shut. Before they completely shut he kissed the top of her head and lifted her hand to his mouth and placed a butterfly kiss on it as well. A sleepy smile filled his face as he started to fall asleep. “Hmm, I love you Sheridan.” He whispered as sleep overtook him.

No matter how many times she’d hear him say that, it would never lose its effect on her. A dazzling smile filled her face as she pulled his arms closer. Softly she whispered back, “I love you too Luis. Always.” Looking down once more at their entwined hands her smile grew even wider as she drifted back to her pleasent dreams. The music played on quietly from the stereo. The snow slowly stopped and stars now shone in the navy sky. Though dying, the fireplace still cast a glow around the room, it’s dim light reflecting off Sheridan and Luis’s faces, and causing the diamond ring on Sheridan’s hand to sparkle.

Have yourself a merry little Christmas
Let your hearts be light
From now on our troubles will be out of site
Have yourself a merry little Christmas
Make the yuletide gay
From now on our troubles will be miles away
Here we are, as in olden days
Happy golden days of yore
Faithful friends who are dear to us
Will be near to us once more
Through the years we all will be together
If the fates allow
Hang a shinning star upon the highest bough
And have yourself a merry little Christmas now.

THE END
