Book of Light

by Andrew Zhou

Phoebe couldn't sleep. Her neck was bothering her. She's been having these body cramps and stomach aches and fevers for the last couple of weeks. It was completely silent in the night but something was keeping her up. She went downstairs to get a glass of milk and a cookie for herself. She tries to go back to sleep but still, she couldn't. It was about 2:45 in the morning.

So she decided, you know, what the hey, let's watch some infomercial. She flipped through ab-twisters and food processors and frankly, sick movies. She was grossed out. So she put a videocassette in the VCR. It was a home video of when the girls went to a fair as little kids. All of a sudden, she heard a noise. One of those magical sounds, like when something magically appears.

"Prue, Piper?"

She slowly crept upstairs to the attic, peeked in just slightly, saw a light flicker and quickly jumped into bed.

"Wowwwwww!"

The next morning, Piper woke up early and hopped into the shower. Prue had a full day of shooting babies (pictures, not guns!) and Phoebe, like always, let things balance themselves out.

"Wow! Phoebe! How"d you get that humungo bruise on your cheek?"

"I hit my face on the bed stand, hey, Prue, did you hear anything last night? Particularly, like around two or three?"

"No, too busy, I was dreaming."

"Ohhh! About what!"

Piper comes in to the kitchen and interrupts, "What about whaaa?!"

"Nevermind, hey Piper, did you hear something last night coming from the attic?"

"No, why, premonition?"

"I really don't know. I couldn't sleep, so I decided to go downstairs and get a snack and watch some TV, oh, by the way, sidebar, there is some sick stuff on in the mornings on cable, you know. Anyway, where was I?"

"Downstairs for a snack."

"Right! Anyway, so I hear this flicker, like this ominous sparkling noise."

"Ominous sparkling!" Prue mocked.

"Okay, anyway, right. I went upstairs to the attic and saw like this flicker of light. I think."

"Are you sure you weren't dreaming?"

"I noticed that the Ab-cruncher was 3 payments of 59.99, I think I could notice something that would scare the hell out of me!"

"Okay, anyway, on that odd moment, I'm off to work, I got some babies to shoot."

Prue arrived a house of 1264 Brent Street. She knocked on the mahogany doors and a tall slender woman came. And there in the back were the most adorable babies. She was to take pictures for a Father's Day present. It was going to be such a great day working with babies, or so she thought, she wouldn't stop crying, peeing on the lens and anything else that required a stop to a laundromat.

Meanwhile, Phoebe and Piper went to investigate the attic, they both had knives in their hands.

"Piper, stop overreacting."

"No, Phoebe, I am the overreacting one in this family, lead with you knife there."

They opened the attic door and found nothing. They dropped their knives.

All of a sudden, Phoebe saw something strange.

"Book of Light?"

"Pardon, Pheebs?" Piper asked as she looked around the room.

"Look, the Book of Shadow's is gone and this 'Book of Light' has replaced it."

"Well, what's in it?"

Phoebe flipped through the pages of the antiquity.

"Well, it still has the spells that changed us into witches… hold on, Making money spell? Falling in Love? Ha! Pregnant spell, personal appearance spell?" Phoebe slowly read the titles of the spells held within.

"Yeah, like it doesn't have the personal gain all over it's dusty self."

"Well, let's test it out."

"Pheebs, I…"

"The scars on my face, Make them displaced, Like I was a newborn, without imperfections that I scorn." And Phoebe stood back.

"Well? Piper, how do I look?"

"Ah-ooh! Ooh!" Piper was speechless as she grabbed her face, "Go look in the mirror."

Phoebe ran into the bathroom and saw. Her bruise was gone and it left a sheer shine on her cheek. She definitely liked what she saw.

"Ok, Phoebe, hurry up, we have to call Leo."

"Leo, any ideas?"

"Well, you know, I never know much about the Book of Shadows. Not my best department, ya know?"

The sisters nodded.

"But, I think that this book was created by an opposite force than the one that the Book of Shadows was created."

"But would we be punished for using personal gain."

"This book wants you to use personal gain. Well, think of it like a sort of reward for all the good you've done."

"Ha, reward? The spirits would never do that to us." Piper chimed in.

"Yeah, I mean, there's even a spell to create custom spells that add on to ours. Oh, speaking of which."

"Phoebe, no!" Piper scolded firmly, "Get back here!"

"Well, then, I have another question, where is the Book of Shadows?" Phoebe asked.

"I think we better get Prue."

"Okay, what is it now. Wow, Phoebe you look so good! What happened?" Prue asked.

"Cute." Phoebe giggled.

"Okay, why is there a Book of Light on the shelf?"

"That's my question."

Phoebe looked through some other spells and stopped immediately. She flickered through the second half of the book and stopped.

"Some of my spells are in here?"

"Say again, Pheebs?"

"In fact, all of my spells: the one to go into the past life, the one to help Piper decide, ooh, shut up Phoebe, you know that one that eventually helped Prue instead?"

"So what are you saying, those were actually personal gain spells?"

"The one for the past life wasn't, Anton had to be vanquished, remember?" Leo looked down at the spells and found something, "2/17/00."

"These spells in chronological order."

"Hold on, this book is backwards, the part about us turning into witches is at the end."

"And this was the last spell I wrote, dated 6/12/00. And these next spells aren't dated."

"Are you saying this is some kind of 'Phoebe's spell' book?"

"Yeah, could it be because I get premonitions?"

"But look, there are only five spells left."

Leo stepped in. "I think I know what's going on. Phoebe, each of your spells are slowly and slowly becoming into more of a personal gain nature. As soon as you've used that last spell, the one for everlasting love with your sisters, you'll die."

"Die?"

"Each spell you're writing is killing you, the spirits still notice and punish you even if the personal gain nature is rising ever so gradually. Have you been experiencing any symptoms? Fever, aches?"

"YES! And why?"

"Phoebe, you're dying."

"Well, Leo, could Phoebe write any more spells for dying at a later time?" Prue asked.

"That wouldn't be possible. Her brain wouldn't let her. Her spirit and soul wouldn't let her. You can't tamper with the Lore. And if you did, you'd be punished severely."

"Hold on, look at this spell, Time travelling, I haven't written that yet, but I can still use it, right, Leo, I mean, I used the personal appearance spell. Right?"

"Yes, but…"

"Of youth and old, Let it be told, That I will travel to a time, Where the pleasure is mine."

Phoebe transported herself to the millennium celebration. She remembers writing her first spell, one to get her to her sisters in time for the celebration. This is what started the train of spells. If the first spell wasn't written, then the Book of Light wouldn't have been out of order. And it wouldn't have existed.

It was written at 12:00 am. Phoebe transported herself in at 11:45. She would have to get to her sisters without a spell or else, all the events thereafter could've been dissolved or changed. She was in Los Angeles and her sisters were in San Francisco.

She raced home in the rain, what would've been a two hour ride turned into a ten minute speed on the highway. They were practically empty. Until the police sirens came on.

Phoebe was placed in jail at 11:56. She had to get to her sisters at 12:00 am and not tell them about the jail event. All of a sudden, she had her one phone call. She was in San Francisco County Jail, only a 20 minute walk from her house.

"Let's see, P3, Leo!"

But then she remembered Leo was a white lighter back then. She called him and at the last possible second, he orbed in. Phoebe told him quickly and quietly (with the policemen around and everything) about getting her out.

He orbed her into the living room of the manor. And she heard the clock strike. Her spirit and body transported back to the present. And as she re-appeared, the Book of Light disappeared.

"I hope you know now we can't trust you with your spells anymore."

"Ok, I can still write them, but I'll just be careful."

"Yes!" Prue exclaimed.

"Oh, my gosh, they are just so adorable? Those babies. You shot that?"

Prue nodded excitedly. "It only cost my favorite blouse, brown stains." Phoebe looked at her in curiosity.

"How about I write a spell to clean that…"

"No way!"

"Come on, please, it's all in the wording!"

And with that Prue and Piper shouted out, "No way!"
