Hardships

by Nikki Beach

"Piper, Phoebe, come on! We're going to be late!" Prue was up in the attic. Phoebe yelled, "How can we be late if we're going into the past?" "Ha-ha! Get up here!" Piper ran up the stairs. "Okay, Prue. I'm ready. Where's Phoebe?" "Okay, I'm here." Prue smiled. "Phoebe, we are not going to need all that stuff." Phoebe sighed. "Fine." Phoebe kicked the five suitcases aside. The sisters gathered around the Book. "You ready, guys?" Piper and Phoebe nodded. Prue recited the spell to go back in time. The sisters were illuminated in blue light.

1850 Michigan

Piper, Prue, and Phoebe woke up in a field. "Prue? Are you sure we are in the right time?" "Yes, 1850. Can't you tell by the clothes?" Piper and Phoebe looked at their outfits. Piper had a light blue dress on, and Phoebe, a green one. Prue had a red dress on. The sisters got up and started walking. "Were are we going?" Prue looked around. "I heard noise, so I guess toward the village." They were soon at the edge of the field and could hear the hum of the busy village. A little girl ran up to Prue and hugged her. "Uh, Prue?" Prue bent down. "Hi. Okay, go back to the village." The little girl smiled and ran back. "What was that all about?" Prue turned toward her sisters. "Don't you have a sort of memory from this time?" Piper nodded slowly. "A little." Phoebe nodded also. "That little girl is my daughter. Her name is Ali. My husband is a guy named Alex. Do you guys remember anything?" Phoebe rubbed her head. "Yes. I have a boyfriend. His name is Carson. Oh, and we are all heading out west today." Piper looked worried. "Are we still sisters?" "Yeah, we are."

The sisters walked in to town and saw a bunch of wagons getting ready to leave. Piper was startled to see Leo running up to her. "Piper. I thought you were going to be late. We are leaving in ten minutes." "Leo, I was just, uh, daydreaming." "That's okay. I'll go get Nicole and Mandie." Leo walked into a nearby cabin. Phoebe playfully punched Piper in the arm. "Two kids. Impressive." Piper smiled slyly. Prue looked around for Alex. He was tending to a wagon. She walked over and hugged him. "Prue! Where were you?" "Nowhere." Phoebe was chatting with Piper when Carson came up to her. "Hey, Pheebs. You ready?" Phoebe smiled. "Of course."

AN HOUR LATER

Prue, Piper, and Phoebe were sharing a wagon with their children. Alex, Leo, and Carson were all helping drive the wagons. Prue was sitting with Ali on her lap. Piper was next to her with Nicole, who was five, on her lap. Mandie, Piper's seven-year-old, was next to Phoebe. It was beginning to get dark and the little girls were falling asleep, one by one. Ali and Nicole were already in dreamland. Mandie was trying to keep up a conversation with Phoebe, but was soon asleep. Piper helped Prue lay the girls under blankets. "Prue, do you think the are another set of the Charmed Ones? And do we still have our powers?" "I don't know. Let me see." Prue moved her hand while concentrating on a blanket. It moved with Prue's hand. "Yup, we still have our powers. Hey Pheebs, what's Carson like?" Phoebe smiled. "He is soooo cute! And he's funny, sweet, kind, and caring. Speaking of romance, can you believe Piper and Leo were together even here?" Piper glared at Phoebe. "Ha, funny. Prue," Piper said, changing subjects, "how old is Ali?" "Nine, she's," Prue's sentence was cut short by the neighing of horses, crashes, and screams. Piper and Prue jumped out of the wagon. Phoebe was on their heels.

Prue stopped in her tracks. All she saw was a heap of dirt, fire, horses, and people. Piper and Phoebe were speechless. "Prue, what happened?" Prue turned to Piper. "I don't know. I can't see anything." Leo came up behind Piper. "Piper, thank god you're all right. Are the kids okay? Where are they?" Piper gave him a reassuring smile. "Mandie and Nicole are fine. So is Ali. They are asleep in the wagon." Phoebe strained to see on tiptoes. "Where's Carson and Alex?" Leo turned to her. "I saw Alex over there. And Carson is helping clean it up." Prue walked over to where Leo was. "What happened?" "A horse reared up and knocked over a wagon and a couple of lanterns." Prue looked at the huge fire. "Piper! The wagon!" Prue and Piper turned to see what Phoebe was yelling about. Prue gasped. The fire had spread to their wagon and was overtaking it. Prue and Piper's mothers' instinct kicked in and they raced toward the fiery blaze. Piper was first to enter and grabbed Nicole, who was closest, and passed her to Prue. Prue gave her frightened niece a quick hug, then passed her out of the wagon, to Leo and Phoebe. Piper moved deeper inside the wagon. She saw Mandie and Ali. "Prue! Help me get them out." Prue walked carefully up to where Piper was. "Ali, honey, come to mommy. Come on, we have to get out." Ali glanced at Mandie, then climbed over the chests that were blocking her way. Prue hugged her. She guided her out to Phoebe. Prue squinted through all the smoke to see Piper and Mandie come out. Piper pushed Mandie into Prue's arms. She stumbled out and breathed fresh air. "Leo?" Leo looked concerned. "Yes?" "Catch me." Piper fell into Leo's arms.

A FEW MINUTES LATER

Piper awoke to see Prue and Phoebe staring down at her. "Piper, are you all right?" Piper coughed, "Yeah." Prue helped her up. "Are the girls okay?" Phoebe nodded. "They are just scared."

A FEW HOURS LATER

Piper and Phoebe were in the wagon, eating the dinner that Prue had helped make. "Pheebs, what exactly is this?" "I had hoped you would know." Piper laughed. Phoebe picked at her food. Piper took a taste and gagged. "Ew! Ick!" Phoebe laughed and pushed the plate away. Prue came in to the wagon. "Piper, are you feeling ok?" "Yeah, fine. Why?" "There is a malaria epidemic. Forty people are already sick." Piper cringed. "That's a lot." Prue nodded. "Piper! Prue, Phoebe! Help us!" The sisters ran outside. Alex and Carson were leaning over something. Piper and Prue walked closer, while Phoebe stayed behind with Ali, who had just run over. Piper pushed past Carson. "Oh my god, Leo." Leo was burning up with fever. Prue ran up. "Alex, what's wrong?" He led her away from Carson, Piper, and Leo. "Prue, Leo has the fever. Malaria." Prue gasped. "Oh, no." "He doesn't have much hope of living, Prue." Prue covered her mouth and looked at Piper. She walked over to her. "Piper, can I see you for a minute?" Piper nodded and followed her over to Alex. "Tell her." Piper looked quizzically at Alex. "Uh, Piper, Leo has malaria." Piper gasped at looked at him. "He'll get better, right?" "He has a small chance of surviving." Piper grabbed onto Prue for support. "Piper, are you all right?" Alex looked at her, concerned. "Piper, Leo is a fighter, he's stronger than the rest." Piper nodded. Prue hugged her sister. "But, Piper, you and your sisters can't be around Leo. Neither can Mandie or Nicole or Ali. Ok?" Piper glared at him. "No! I'm staying by his side!" Prue stroked her sister's hair. "Piper. We don't want you to get sick." Piper pulled away from them. "Oh well." She ran back to Leo.

Piper sat by Leo's side while her family watched. Nicole walked up to Phoebe. "Aunt Phoebe, I want to see Daddy." Phoebe bent down. "Honey, you can't, he's sick." "But Mommy can." "Yeah, well, she shouldn't." Nicole sulked away. Phoebe hurried over to Prue. "Prue, we have to get Piper away from Leo. She could get sick and we don't have the Book to save her." Prue nodded. "Come on, we have to talk to her." The two sisters walked over to the wagon. "Piper?" Phoebe and Prue climbed up into the wagon. Piper was sitting by Leo, putting a wet cloth on his forehead. "Piper, honey, you have to get out of here. You are going to get sick." Piper turned. "No. I have to stay. He needs me." Prue looked at her sister. "Piper, no. I'm not sacrificing your life so you die for someone you can see in normal times. We came here for a reason, remember?" Piper rubbed her head. "Prue, you don't understand. It doesn't matter what time period we're in. It kills me to see Leo like this. You used to understand, though. With Andy." Prue looked at her sister, surprised." "Piper, that was different." "How? Because Andy is dead? No it's not Prue. Do you realize how many times we had to protect Andy? It's the exact same thing!" Phoebe stepped in. "Piper, we just don't want you to get hurt. We don't know how it will result in the future. You could die here, and in the future." Piper turned. "Phoebe, please. If Leo dies, my life is empty." Phoebe sighed. "What about Mandie and Nicole?" Piper whipped around to face her sisters. "Oh come on! They are in the past. They aren't in 2000! Nothing is real here." Prue grabbed Phoebe's arm and led her to a corner. "Pheebs, she's right. Mandie, Nicole, Ali, they aren't real. Well, in this time period. Look, my point is, we have to find the demon, kill it, and get back to 2000." Phoebe nodded. "What about Piper?" "I'll have to get Alex." Prue walked out and saw Alex. "Alex, could you get Piper out of the wagon? I don't want her to get malaria." Alex nodded. "She still hasn't come out?" Prue shook her head and led Alex to the wagon. "Piper, Prue and Phoebe are worried. Come on." Piper turned toward Alex. "Alex, I have to stay here. If something happens, I have to be here. With him." Alex took Piper's hand. "Piper, nothing is going to happen. Come on." Piper surrendered and let Alex lead her out of the wagon. Phoebe and Prue ran over and hugged her. Piper pulled back and glared at them. She rubbed her eyes and ran into the woods. Phoebe looked at Prue. "Come on." Alex spoke up. "I think she wants to be alone. Piper is going through a rough time. Prue, can I talk to you." Prue nodded.

"Prue, what's going on?" Prue shrugged. "What?" "I heard Phoebe talking about if Piper died, she might die in the future." Prue sighed. "Alex, I'm not the Prue from this time period. Neither are Phoebe or Piper. We are from the year 2000. You see, Piper and Leo are, were, going out in the future, too. Leo left Piper a lot, and he hurt her. But they always find away to get back together. They are soul mates." Alex stared at her. "Ok, woah." "Are you ok?" Alex nodded slowly." Phoebe ran over to them. "Prue, Alex, its Ali!" Prue stood up and grabbed Alex's hand. They ran back into the village. "Ali is over there." Prue saw the doctor with her. They ran over. Dr. Kinder looked up. "Alex, thank god you're here. She has the fever." Prue gasped.

Ali was placed on a cot in the wagon where children where kept. Prue sat with Alex. "Alex, is she going to be okay?" Alex squeezed her hand. "I hope so." Piper walked up to them. Her eyes where red. Prue noticed she had been crying. "Prue, Alex, I'm sorry. Ali shouldn't have the fever." Prue smiled a shaky smile. "Thanks. Neither should Leo." Piper was about to say something when a huge wind blew across the camp. A man ran to Dr. Kinder. "Doc, a storms a'comin! A big one." A group of men ran over. "Alex, better get inside. It looks like a twister!" Alex stood up. "Prue, go get Phoebe. You and your sisters go in the wagon with Leo. You'll have to chance it. Piper, get Mandie and Nicole. I'll stay here with Ali." Prue nodded and kissed Alex. She grabbed Piper's hand and ran over to the wagon. Phoebe was already inside with Mandie, Nicole, and Carson. Piper jumped in and sat next to Leo. Prue sat next to Phoebe. "Prue, what's happening?" "It's a twister." Phoebe hugged Nicole. Mandie sat on Prue's lap. Piper listened quietly as the sand swirled around and lighting and thunder sounded. She thought she felt Leo squeeze her hand, but when she looked down at him, he was asleep. A crash sounded. Piper jumped up and looked out the small opening. A tree had fallen. Piper's eyes widened as four more fell. She saw Alex running toward them. "Prue! It's Alex!" She backed away as Alex hauled himself and Ali up. "Alex, what are you doing here?" Alex brushed himself off. "A tree fell on the children's wagon. Luckily, no one was in there." The group stayed in the small wagon for two hours.

Piper looked around the camp. She was looking for Prue. Piper spotted her. "Prue!" Prue walked toward her. "What's up?" "Since when do we tell mortals about supernatural things?" "What?" "You telling Alex we're not from this time." Prue grimaced. "I had to. We haven't seen a demon since we got here and I just felt it was right." "Prue, what if Alex is the demon?" Prue grabbed her wrist. "He's not. I have to go visit Ali." Piper stared after her. "Piper! Piper!" Piper turned toward Alex. "What's up?" "Piper, its Leo."

Alex and Piper ran toward the wagon. Three men were carrying Leo out. Piper ran up to him. "Leo, what's happening? Leo?" The men carried him away. Piper turned to Alex. "Alex, what happened?" "Piper, I'm sorry. Leo died a few minutes ago." Piper gasped and tears ran down her face. "Piper, don't cry." Alex hugged her. Piper stared at the ground. Prue and Phoebe ran up to them. "Piper, honey, I am so, so sorry."

There was 350 more miles to the ending point. Piper and Phoebe were in the woods, talking. "Are you ok?" "Pheebs, I'm fine. I'm over Leo." Phoebe smiled. "I'm glad. I mean that you're over him, not that he's dead." Piper laughed. "I know." A twig snapped behind Piper. "Pheebs, did you hear something?" Phoebe nodded. Piper turned. Suddenly, a huge creature jumped at them. Piper threw up her hands and the thing froze. "Whoa!" "Piper, are you all right?" Piper nodded. "What is THAT?" Phoebe looked at it. "I don't know. Come on, we better get out of here before it unfreezes." The two ran back to the village.

Prue was talking to Alex. "Prue!" Prue turned to see Phoebe and Piper rushing towards her. "Prue, problem. We have to talk to you. In private." Prue glanced at Alex. "Okay. Alex, could you excuse me?" Alex nodded. The sisters walked over to an empty spot. "Prue, I think we found the demon. It's in the woods. It attacked Piper and I, but Piper froze it." Prue looked concertedly at her little sisters. "Are you guys okay?" Phoebe nodded. "Yea, we're fine. Piper froze it in the knick of time" Prue looked at Piper. "Piper, are you okay?" Piper nodded, slowly. "Pheebs, you know what the creature reminded me of? The wendigo." Phoebe thought for a moment. "Yeah, it did sort of look like it." Prue rang her hands. "So, what do we do?" Prue shrugged. "I guess wait, if it attacks again, we'll kill it."

Alex walked up to Prue. "Prue, we need to talk." Prue walked over to a bench. "What's up?" "I need to know everything. First of all, who's Andy?" Prue bit her lip. "No one." "Prue, I don't like games. Piper made it sound like you really cared about him." Prue jumped up. "Piper told you?" Prue rushed off in the direction of the wagon. Piper and Phoebe were talking about the creature. Prue walked up and grabbed Piper's arm. "Hey." She pulled Piper up. "Piper, where do you get off telling Alex about me and Andy. Andy is, was in the future." "Prue, I never said that." Prue pushed her. Piper fell to the ground. "You keep you're little future gossip to yourself." She stormed off. Phoebe helped Piper up. "Piper, are you ok?" Piper nodded. "Phoebe, I never told Alex about Andy." Phoebe nodded and hugged her.

Prue walked back to Alex, fuming. "Okay, Alex. What did she say?" "She said you used to understand with Andy. In the wagon." Realization hit Prue. Alex had heard them talking. "Prue, are you ok? You don't look so good." Prue searched for words. "Alex, I just made a huge mistake." She turned and slowly walked to the wagon. "Piper, I'm-" No one was in the wagon. "Phoebe?" No answer. "Prue!" Prue turned. Carson was coming up to her. "Prue, have you seen Phoebe?" Prue shook her head. "No, I haven't seen Piper either." Carson was about to say something when his eyes widened. "Carson, what's the matter?" "Phoebe." "Huh?" Carson brushed past Prue. She turned and gasped. Phoebe was stumbling out of the woods, tattered. Prue rushed up to her. "Phoebe, oh my god. What happened?" "The creature. It has Piper, Prue."

Prue and Phoebe were walking through the woods. "Where were you guys?" "In the middle of the forest. Were we were before." "Why didn't Piper freeze it?" "It snuck up on us." Phoebe stumbled and grabbed on to a tree. Instantly she had a premonition. Phoebe saw the creature. It was pulling Piper into a cave. Phoebe went back to the normal world. "What happened?" "It took Piper into a cave. But it was weird. Piper had jeans and a black leather jacket on." Prue blinked. "Phoebe, a cave!" Phoebe turned. "Prue, that- that's the cave. The sisters walked into it. "Piper?" Phoebe grabbed on to Prue's arm. Suddenly, the creature jumped out. Prue flicked her wrist and the creature flew into the cave wall. Prue pulled Phoebe into a dark corner. Phoebe tried to calm her breathing. She felt another person in the small room. She quietly turned her head. She squinted into the dark. "Piper?" Prue whipped her head around. "Piper, oh my god. Are you okay?" "Yeah." Phoebe and Prue crawled to the back where their sister was. Prue breathed a sigh of relief. Phoebe looked closely at Piper. "Piper, you have a huge bruise on your head." Piper nodded. "I know. Look, we have to kill this thing. I have a potion." She pulled out a vile of glowing green liquid. "Where did you get that?" "Prue, don't ask questions right now." Prue nodded. "I'm going to go out and vanquish it." Piper crawled to the entrance. She threw the vile at the monster. It exploded on it. Phoebe heard a long screech.

The sisters walked back to the camp. It was already dark. Piper turned to her sisters. "I think we should go back, now." Phoebe nodded. Prue looked around. "We should say goodbye." The sisters went in different directions. Prue walked over to the children's wagon. Alex was sleeping on a bench near it. Prue smiled. She gently kissed him. "Good bye." She peeked in at Ali. "Bye."

Phoebe walked to Carson's wagon. She looked inside. Phoebe smiled. She leaned in and gave Carson a small kiss. "Good bye, Carson. I'll miss you." Piper jumped up into the wagon. Mandie and Nicole were sleeping peacefully. Piper knelt next to them. Nicole rustled in her sleep. Piper tried to keep from crying. She brushed Nicole's bangs away and kissed her on the head. She squeezed Mandie's hand. "Bye, girls."

The sisters gathered in the woods. Phoebe saw Piper try to conceal her tears. She put an arm around her. "You okay?" Piper grinned. "Yeah, fine." Prue looked back at the camp one last time. "You guys ready?" Phoebe and Piper nodded. Prue said the spell and the sisters were illuminated in blue light.

THE YEAR 2000

The sisters found themselves in their attic, in normal clothes. Phoebe looked around. "That was weird." Prue nodded. "Yeah. Very freaky. So, Piper, where did you get the potion?" Piper smiled secretively. "From an angel." She walked out of the attic. Phoebe and Prue stared at each other. Piper was in the foyer. "Ok, Leo. I know you can hear me." Blue orbs swirled in front of her. Leo appeared. Piper smiled. "Hi." "Hi." Piper took Leo's hand and led him in the living room. "You told me that when you become a whitelighter you got to see all of your past lives, right?" Leo nodded. "Did you see the 1850's?" Leo nodded. "Piper, I know you and your sisters went back to that time. And we had two kids. Girls. And Prue had a little girl too. They were the Charmed Ones of that century." Piper was speechless. "Did they have their powers yet?" "How old were they?" Piper thought a moment. "Nicole was five, Mandie was seven, and Ali was nine." Leo nodded. "You guys were a year early." Piper looked at her hands. "You died." Leo lifted her chin. "I know. And I was watching you guys the whole time. I'm sorry for putting you through that. Piper, I never want to see you hurt that much ever." They kissed. Leo got up. "Um, I sort of have to go." Piper stood up. "Okay." Leo walked into the foyer. Piper followed to the doorway. "Hey, Leo." He turned. "Thanks for the potion." Leo smiled and orbed out.
