The Imposter

by Tim

DISCLAIMER: This story is based upon the series, Charmed, that was created by Constance M. Burge. All Charmed characters are the property of Spelling Productions, with the exception of Jessica Llewell Halliwell, which Denny and I created.

It is a busy morning at the Bank of San Francisco. People are coming in and out, generally wrapped up in their own concerns. No one notices when someone, who appears to be Rex Buckland, strolls into the bank, carrying a black bag. Rex takes one long look around the bank, reached into the bag, and pulls out a sub-machine gun! "NOBODY MOVE!" Rex shouts at the top of his lungs: "THIS IS A HOLD UP! EVERYONE DOWN ON THE FLOOR! NOW!" The bank patrons quickly obey. Some guards come running in. Seeing them, Rex shouts: "ANYBODY MESSES WITH ME, WE ALL GO UP IN FLAMES!" He pulls back his jacket to reveal sticks of dynamite strapped to his torso, the guards lower their guns. Rex walks up to the nearest teller and places a sack in front of her. "Fill this with hundred dollar bills! Now!" The teller obeys, while another teller activates the silent alarm.

At the police station, Andy is sitting at his desk, lost in thought: Who knew? Three women I have known practically my whole life turn out to be witches! It has been several days now since Andy found out the Halliwell's secret and he is still trying to deal with it. He snaps out of it when his partner, Morris, hurries up to him. Seeing the look on his partner's face, Andy asks: "What's up?" Morris quickly replies: "There is a bank robbery in progress. Bank of San Francisco on Sutter St." Having something like this to work on snaps Andy out of his funk. "Let's go," he says and the two of them head out.

Back at the bank, Rex has filled his sack with money and is ready to leave. "Thank you all for your generosity." he says mockingly. Rex turns and stares right into a security camera. He declares: "After today, everyone will know who Rex Buckland is!"

A few minutes later, Rex is leaving the bank, when a police car pulls up and two uniformed cops jump out. "Freeze!" one of them shouts. Rex just smiles, whips up his sub-machine gun, and opens fire. He nails the front of the police car and soon black smoke erupts from the engine while the two cops duck for safety. After that, Rex quickly jumps into a red Ferrari, guns the engine, and roars off. Although the two cops are okay, their patrol car is totaled.

Ten minutes later, Andy and Morris arrive on the scene. While Morris talks to the two uniformed cops, Andy goes into the bank and is soon viewing the security tapes. Seeing Rex's image, Andy thinks: Well look who we have here! He looks up as Morris enters the bank. "I talked to the two officers. They say the robber got away in red Ferrari. They got the license number and are tracking it down now." Morris notices that Andy appears to be smiling: "What is it?" he asks. "I know who our robber is. It's Rex Buckland, it seems he's finally re-surfaced." Andy shows Morris the tape of Rex. "Finally." Andy says: "I've been after this guy for months." He looks up and notices the bank manger, a man called Rodney Cook, hovering nearby. "Mr. Cook, did the robber have anyone with him? A red-haired woman?" Cook says no. "Well how about that." Andy mumbles: "I wonder what happened to Hannah?" Suddenly an idea strikes him. "Stay here and take statements from the witnesses." he tells Morris: "I think I may have my own lead on this case."

At Halliwell Manor, the mood is happy. Their adopted sister, Jessica Llewell Halliwell, has just returned from Paris, however it is a few weeks later than her original return date. "So how was it?" Phoebe asks with curiosity. "Did you get to go up the Eiffel Tower?" Jessica smiles and replies: "Yes I did. I had a great time, plus I vanquished a Warlock or two along the way. That's why I was late getting back. What happened here?" Prue speaks up: "Well we had a leprechaun pay a visit (see mine and Kyle's story, "Luck of The Small" for details), and Piper hit her head." Jessica looks at Piper. "I'm fine." Piper says in anticipation of Jessica's question. "It seems Seamus, the leprechaun, had the power to heal me. That's not all that happened, perhaps Prue should fill you in on this." Jessica looks at Prue. Prue nods her head and says: "Andy knows about us now. He found out a few days ago." Prue fills Jessica in on their recent adventure with the Grimlocks and the kidnaped children. "I think he's okay with it, but it's too early to tell." Jessica can understand. "When my husband, Billy, proposed to me in 1858, I had to tell him the truth. He took it rather well, of course he loved me. If Andy truly has feelings for you, I'm sure he will come to understand."

Prue then takes Jessica aside and says: "Something else happened to me as well. Remember when you told me that I would be able to channel my powers through my hands? Well it's happened (Jessica mentioned this to Prue in Denny's story "Time and Again")." Prue goes on to tell Jessica about how she used her new stronger powers against the Grimlocks. "I understand." Jessica replies: "But this is only the natural evolution of your powers. They will get stronger as you get older. You really have nothing to worry about." Prue smiles and replies: "Thanks, Jessica. You're always there when we need you."

A little while later the door bell rings. Phoebe answers it and sees Andy standing there. "Speak of the devil." she says. "We were just talking about you not too long ago." Andy replies that he is here on official police business and asks to see Prue.

Soon all of them are in the living room. Seeing Jessica, Andy says: "I suppose you're a witch as well." Jessica replies: "I am. I've been sort of a guardian to the Halliwell family for generations. I was born Jessica Payne in Plymouth, Massachusetts, in 1667." Andy takes it in as Jessica explains the story of her vow to Melinda and the immortality potion. "Well right now, nothing surprises me about you bunch anymore." Andy says and then turns back to Jessica: "Payne? I thought your last name was Llewell." Jessica fills him in. "I took that last name when I married Billy Llewell in 1858. He was killed, five years later, at Gettysburg." Andy just nods and then seems to focus himself. "Anyhow, back to the reason why I am here." He turns to Prue and holds up a folder he has brought with him. "It seems your old boss is back in town. He just robbed a bank." Andy hands the folder to Prue. "I think you may have some information on Rex Buckland." Andy says: "It's just a feeling I have." Prue replies: "You're right, Andy. I do have some information on him. However, he couldn't have robbed the bank. He's not evil anymore." Andy just looks at her. "Oh boy!" Prue says: "I guess we'll have to give it to you straight about Rex and Hannah." The sisters fill Andy in about their battles with their former enemies and then Rex and Hannah's turning good. "Okay, let me get this straight." Andy says: "Rex and Hannah were Warlocks who served the forces of evil. But then you three managed to convince them to turn good. Is that about right?" Phoebe nods and says: "That's about it, Andy." Andy is still not convinced: "Okay, but then how do you explain Rex robbing the bank?" he challenges them to answer. "It's simple." Prue says: "It wasn't Rex. More likely it was a shape-shifter taking his form." Andy has had enough for now. "Shape-shifters. Look just call me if you know anything. I really can't deal with this right now." He gets up and leaves.

A short while later, the Halliwells are in the kitchen. "Poor Andy." Phoebe says: "I think this is a lot for him to take in." Prue says she agrees, but adds: "Still we have to find out what really happened at the bank today. If Rex didn't rob it, then who did?"

Arriving back at the police station, Andy goes to his computer and soon begins searching through the Net on information about the Civil War. It takes a while, but soon Andy finds what he is looking for. He stares at the information on his screen:

LLEWELL, CAPTAIN WILLIAM DOUGLAS.

SERVICE: UNION ARMY.

BORN: BOSTON, MA. JULY 8, 1834.

KILLED IN BATTLE: JULY 1, 1863, GETTYSBURG, PA.

Andy also finds mention of a picture of Billy Llewell in the file and punches it up. Soon he is looking at an old black and white drawing of a young couple. The dark curly haired young man was dressed in the uniform of a Union Army officer and was standing protectively behind a young dark haired woman. No doubt about it. Andy thinks to himself: That woman is definitely the Jessica Llewell I know.

At this point, Morris arrives and sees what Andy is staring at. Andy quickly covers base. "The Civil War is just an old hobby of mine." He changes the subject: "So what did you find out about that robbery?" Morris shakes his head: "Not much. We got the license plate numbers on the red Ferrari that Buckland used in his getaway. Turns out the car was stolen. You find out anything?" Andy shakes his head. "No. But I think I'm going to give my source another try."

Back at Halliwell Manor, Prue reaches a decision: "I guess the only way to find out for sure is to go and see Rex and Hannah." Phoebe nods and says: "I guess they're still at the Fortress of Solitude." Everyone just looks at Phoebe: "Well can any of you think of a better name for it?" she asks. The Fortress of Solitude was in reality a large country house Jessica maintained high in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, she had built it eighty-five years ago. Despite it's remote location, it was kept well stock and had all the modern conveniences. Jessica said that she uses it as a place to retreat to from time to time when she wanted to be alone. When Phoebe heard this, she said that it reminded her of the Fortress of Solitude that the comic book hero, Superman, maintained as a private retreat and the name just stuck. After the Halliwells had their recent adventure in Hell with Rex and Hannah, Jessica suggested that the two former Warlocks stay at the mountain retreat. There they could be left in peace, especially now that Hannah was pregnant.

As the sisters are getting ready to leave, Andy returns to Halliwell Manor. Seeing that the sisters are acting like they are going somewhere, Andy comments: "What is going on here?" Prue replies: "Well I guess we can tell you. We are going to see Rex and Hannah ourselves, just to be sure." Andy nods his head and announces that he is coming with them: "Don't try to talk me out of it." he says to Prue: "I'm in this far, might as well go further." The Halliwells decide to let Andy come and then tell him of their destination: "The Sierra Nevada Mountains!" he says with surprise: "But that will take hours." Piper shakes her head and says they will use the trans-location spell to go there. Phoebe explains that the spell can send them to a certain place for a period of time. Andy just nods his head and re-affirms that he is coming along.

Soon the five of them are in the attic and Jessica opens the Book of Shadows. "I'll set the spell for six hours. That should be enough time." For Andy's benefit, she adds: "After the time is up, we'll automatically be returned here." She says the spell.

An instant later, the five of them are standing in front of a large house, surrounded by the beautiful mountains jutting up into the clear blue sky. Andy is baffled, looking around. "But there's nothing here!" he says. Jessica grins and places her hand in front of Andy's eyes for few seconds. After she takes it away, Andy is blown away by the sight of the house. "That's one of the quirks about this place." Jessica tells him. "Nobody can see it unless I want them to."

Inside the house, in the living room, Rex is building a fire in the fireplace while Hannah sits on the couch. She is now about a month or so into her pregnancy and has had all the trials and tribulations that a pregnant women would go through: "However I guess it will be all worth it in the end." she says to herself.

At this point, there is a knock at the front door, Rex answers it and is greeted by the sight of the Halliwells. "Come to check up on us?" Rex asks them. "I'm afraid it's much more serious than that." Prue replies. Rex then spots Andy, but before he can say anything, Phoebe jumps in: "It's okay, he's with us. We'll explain everything in a few minutes."

Soon all of them are in the living room as Prue, and then Andy, bring Rex and Hannah up to speed on the events in San Francisco. "So it seems somebody is impersonating me." Rex says. Hannah is baffled: "But why? What's the purpose?" Piper has an idea: "Maybe they want to use you as a cover. After all the white-lighters may have forgiven you two, but the legal system hasn't. Maybe somebody has decided to cash in on that." Prue has her own thoughts: "You may be right, Piper, but I feel that there is more to this than a simple frame. Rex and Hannah are now regarded as traitors by their former associates. Maybe this is there way of getting back at them." Rex clues in to what Prue is saying: "Trying to stir things up for me and Hannah, bring our past back to haunt us." He is clearly upset by this: "Will it ever end? Can't Hannah and I have a little peace? She's pregnant, we can't always be looking over our shoulders." Jessica speaks up: "As long as the two of you are here, you're safe. As I explained to Andy, no one can ever find this place unless I wish it." Andy then gets his two cents in: "Still there is someone out there committing crimes. I have to find him and stop him, no matter what." Prue then comments: "Wrong, Andy. We have to stop him."

Back in San Francisco, a jewelry store, in the downtown area, is being robbed by the Rex imposter: "That's it now." he says, waving his gun around and holding out a sack. "Just fill this up with the finest jewelry in this store and I'll be on my way. Also I wouldn't advise any trick, I'm wired." Once again he has dynamite strapped to his body. The terrified employees quickly do as the imposter says and then, with a mocking smile, he clears out.

Twenty minutes later, the police are on the scene. After taking statements, Morris realizes that this is the same robber as the bank. Morris also has other thoughts on this mind: Where the hell is Andy? I've been trying to reach him on his cell phone, but it says he is out of range. What is going on here?

Back at Jessica's mountain home, there is nothing to do now but pass the time until the spell wears off and they are returned to Halliwell Manor. Rex announces that he and Hannah will be coming back with them: "It's my face this person is using, so I think I should be included in this to the end." The Halliwells agree.

At one point, Andy spots a picture on a wall and wanders over to get a better look at it. Sure enough, it's the same picture Andy had seen in his computer when he was checking up on Billy Llewell. Andy is so fascinated by it that he doesn't hear Jessica walk up to him. Seeing what Andy is looking at, Jessica comments: "We had that picture of us made when Billy joined the Union Army." She points to the picture of him in his uniform. "I've kept it ever since, one of the many ways I treasure Billy's memory." Andy looks into her face, clearly seeing that Jessica is still very much in love with Billy now. "I really don't know what to say." he comments: "All this is happening pretty fast." he looks over to where Prue is sitting and continues: "I had hoped that we could get back together someday. However, this witch business could complicate matters." Smiling, Jessica replies: "Andy, if you truly care for somebody, then it shouldn't matter what they are. Billy and I only had a few short years together, but we had a love that spanned the gap between witch and human. Prue stills loves you, Andy, and deep down you still love her. Just give it time and I feel that everything will work out." Andy takes what Jessica said to heart: "Then I will give Prue as much time as she needs. I hope that we can work this out and get back together." Jessica just smiles.

Soon the trans-location spell wears off and the group, now with Rex and Hannan along, are transported back to Halliwell Manor. They go downstairs, when Andy's cell phone comes to life. Andy excuses himself to and goes into the kitchen.

Once there, Andy answers his phone: "Where the hell have you been?" The voice of Morris comes through: "I've been trying to reach you for hours. Buckland robbed a jewelry store a few hours ago." Andy apologizes and says that his cell phone must be malfunctioning. "I'll be right in." he quickly adds.

The others have gathered in the living room when Andy comes back. "I gotta go now." he says and then points to Rex and Hannah: "You two better keep a low profile for now. After all we don't want them arresting the wrong people."

After Andy has left, the others begin to talk. Hoping to break the ice, Phoebe asks: "So, Hannah, what's it like to be pregnant?" Hannah replies: "What's it like? Well there is mornings when I am sick as a dog, there are the times that I am hungry a lot. It's different, I'll give you that. I just hope that I will be a good mother to this child. I want to make up for all the terrible things I did in the past." Jessica walks over and places a hand on Hannah's shoulder: "You will." Jessica tells her: "Maybe your example will show other Warlocks out there that there is another way than evil. If enough realize this, then the forces of Hell will have quite a setback." Prue nods her head: "We can only wish."

Arriving back at the police station, Andy has Morris bring him up to speed on the recent robbery. After Morris has finished, Andy comments: "Don't you find it strange, Morris, that Buckland should go on this spree after months of inactivity? Plus he has really changed his M.O. from the last time. He and Hannah Webster did steal from the auction house, that is true enough, but they did it quietly from behind the scenes. Directly robbing banks and jewelry stores is very different from that." Morris is puzzled: "Just what are you saying, Andy?" Andy, who does not want to give away the secrets he knows, says: "I'm saying that we should look at the possibility that this robber is not Rex Buckland, but rather somebody impersonating him." Morris all but laughs at this idea: "Oh come on now, Andy. Why would anybody run around disguised as Buckland, it doesn't make sense." Andy replies: "I'm just saying that we should be keeping an open mind about all this, that's all." Morris looks at his partner: "Andy, is there something you're not telling me? You've been acting very strange these past few days, ever since that case with the missing children." Andy just says that perhaps the stress of the job is getting to him: "Maybe it's time for a vacation."

Meanwhile, a few blocks away, the Rex imposter is at it again. He is breaking into an ATM. machine, not even trying to conceal his actions. A passerby notices and uses his cell phone to dial 9.1.1.

Soon after, Morris and Andy get the call and head out.

The Rex imposter has broken the ATM open and is extracting the money, when Andy and Morris arrive on the scene. "Freeze!" Andy yells: "Okay just put the money down and back away." The imposter looks at Andy and says: "Okay, don't shoot. I give up." he raises his hands. Andy walks over and is ready to slap on the cuffs, when the imposter moves like greased lighting. He grabs Andy, places a gun to his temple, and uses him as a shield so Morris can't fire. "You shoot at me." the imposter calls out: "You hit your partner." Andy struggles, but can't break free. Still using Andy as a shield, the imposter begins to back away towards his red Ferrari. When he reaches the car, he shoves Andy away. Andy manages to briefly grab the imposters cuff and something rips away. Morris runs up to Andy just as the Ferrari speeds away. "Damn! We almost had him!" Morris growls. Andy smiles and says: "We may still get him yet." he looks down at the gold cufflink that he was able to rip off the imposter's sleeve.

After having filled in a report at the police station, Andy heads back to Halliwell Manor.

At the Manor, the Halliwells, Rex, and Hannah are discussing ways to catch the imposter, when Andy arrives, catching the tail end of their conversation: "I think I may have the answer for you." he says and holds up the cufflinks: "Now if Phoebe's powers work the way you tell me they do, perhaps she can tell us where to look." Quickly Phoebe grabs the cufflinks and a vision comes from them. A vision of the past:

A door opens and the Rex imposter comes out and gets into his Ferrari. As he pulls away, a factory becomes visible. A sign can be seen on the factory: THOMPSON IRONWORKS.

The vision ends and Phoebe tells them what she saw: "It appears our imposter is based at a factory called Thompson Ironworks. Does anyone here know where that is?" Andy has the answer: "I do. The Thompson Ironworks is located in Oakland, at least it was. They went out of business about ten years ago. Guess the factory has been abandoned ever since." Prue then decides that now is the time for action: "I think it's time we paid the factory a visit." Andy looks like he is ready to go, but Prue says no: "Andy, we may be going up against Warlocks here. I don't want to risk your safety." she turns to the others: "Are we agreed on this?" Piper comes to Prue's support, "She's right, Andy. We've had a lot more experience with these things. Please stay here." Andy reluctantly agrees. Soon all Halliwells, plus Rex and Hannah, leave. Andy waits about ten minutes and says: "To heck with that." He plans to follow them.

The little group piles into Piper's car and heads out. After a while, they reach Oakland and pull up at the abandoned Thompson Ironworks factory. After they get out of the car, Piper spots the red Ferrari parked nearby. "Guess our imposter is here." Phoebe comments.

It is very quiet as the little group enters the factory and begins to look around. Suddenly a voice calls out: "Glad you could all make it." Everyone is amazed, for the voice is Rex's. Soon the Rex imposter steps out from behind some boxes and grins evilly at them. "Now the fun can begin." Before events can proceed any further, the real Rex erupts: "You son of a bitch!" He charges his double and soon the two Rex's are rolling on the floor, exchanging punches. "Hurry." Hannah says: "We have to help our Rex." Phoebe just looks at the two fighting figures and comments: "Sure. You point him out and we'll help him." Suddenly Prue has an idea and turns to Jessica. "When we were in Hell, you told us that you placed a Spell of Immunity on Rex and Hannah that protected them from our powers, so they could help us escape. Did you ever remove that spell?" Jessica thinks for a moment and says: "No I didn't. So if Piper were to use her powers, then the Rex that froze would be the fake one. Go for it!" Piper needs no further encouragement and quickly uses her powers. Sure enough, the phony Rex freezes. The real Rex gets up and walks back to the others. "Strange thing." he says: "Fighting oneself like that."

Suddenly what appears to be an energy field of some kind instantly surrounds the group. When this happens, the fake Rex unfreezes and gets to his feet. Piper tries to freeze him again, but nothing happens. The Halliwells discover that none of their powers are working.

Outside the factory, Andy pulls up and gets out of his car.

The Halliwells are discussing their options, when a man appears on the scene. He is dressed in a silver uniform and appears to be in his early fifties. Eyeing the trapped group, the man comments: "None of your powers will work. The force field has neutralized them. You see, in the 27th Century, where I come from, witches live openly among humans and there is a great deal of information exchanged." Prue speaks up: "Just who the hell are you and what do you want?" The man smile and replies: "You may call me John. I have come back in time nearly seven hundred years for this. You see I am what you would call a collector, my interests are magic and witchcraft. I have a really impressive collection, and now I will add the legendary Charmed Ones to my collection." He looks at Jessica: "Also the immortal one." John then looks at Rex and Hannah: "Plus the two Warlocks whom the Charmed Ones turned away from evil." Prue forces calm into her voice as she says: "I see. Do you want us to believe that kidnaping is legal in your time?" John shakes his head. "No, others would frown upon what I am doing, but since I live in a remote area, no one will ever know. Even time travel is strictly regulated by the Temporal Enforcement Council. No doubt if they knew I was here, I would be in trouble, tampering with the past is punishable by death where I come from." John points to a glowing amulet around his neck: "As long as I wear this, they can't detect me and I will be safe."

Andy has managed to sneak into the factory without being seen and has overheard the entire conversation. Suddenly he spots a glowing panel on a nearby wall and moves towards it.

John now motions to the Rex imposter. "Impressive, isn't he. You see I managed, while still back in my time, to procure a genetic sample of Rex Buckland and grew this clone of him." Clone-Rex smiles and John continues: "He is totally devoted to me. I knew that if he went around committing crimes, you Halliwells would investigate which would bring you right to me. It worked beyond my wildest hopes. Soon we will all be heading to my time, where you will all entertain me for the rest of your natural lives."

Andy has snuck closer to the glowing panel. Gambling that this is the source of the force field, Andy uses his gun and smashes the panel to pieces.

Sure enough, the force field vanishes. Before John can react, Prue uses her powers, through her hands, to throw him across the room and he lands in crumpled heap. Clone-Rex pulls out a gun, but then a shot rings out. Clone-Rex looks down at a growing red stain on his chest and falls dead to the floor. Everyone turns around to see Andy, gun drawn, standing there. "Though you could use some help." he says, smiling.

Meanwhile, John has come to and is crawling towards the gun that Clone-Rex dropped when he died. Seeing him, Phoebe runs over and gives John a karate kick to the jaw. The man from the future flies backward and once again lands flat on his back. Before he can do anymore, Phoebe rips his amulet off his neck and smashes it into a million pieces. "My amulet!" John shrieks: "That means that..." Suddenly a blue glow surrounds him. "They've found me! Nooooooo!" Still screaming, John vanishes, dragged back to his own time and certain punishment.

Soon, Andy gives the place a once over. "Well all the money and jewels are here." He looks at the dead Clone-Rex and then turns to Rex and Hannah: "I've got an idea."

A considerable time later, Andy, along with Morris, watch as the body of Clone-Rex is zipped up into a bag. "That's how it happened." Andy says to his partner: "I got an anonymous tip that said Rex Buckland was holed up here in this old factory and decided to follow it up. Turns out he was here and tried to shoot me, but I got him first." Morris looks as the body is wheeled out of the building: "So much for Rex Buckland. I wonder what ever happened to Hannah?" Andy shrugs his shoulders and says: "Who knows? He probably ditched or killed her. It seem this case is closed."

Later, at Halliwell Manor, Andy tells Rex and Hannah what happened: "Well Rex, as far as the law is concerned, you're dead. So you shouldn't have anymore troubles, so long as you stay low." Rex is grateful and then says: "Now I think Hannah and I would like to go back to the mountain retreat." Jessica says she will do it and they head upstairs, followed by Phoebe and Piper.

Left alone together, Andy tells Prue: "I know this witch stuff will be hard for me, but if you are willing to bear with me, I think I can learn to cope with it." Prue smiles at him: "Well Andy, let's just say it's a start." The two of them smile at each other as we fade out.
