Forget Me, Phoebe

by Tim

We open as night has fallen. In the Palo Alto apartment, Rex Buckland is sitting at a desk in the study (it is a two-bedroom apartment, Rex uses the spare bedroom as his study), going over a notebook in which he has kept written records of his battles with the Halliwells, plus documents of covert surveillance on the Halliwells in astral form. He is lost in thought: The Halliwells, no matter what I throw at them, always seem to be one step ahead of me. Consider my attempt to force them into giving up their powers. I had maneuvered them into the perfect trap, give me their powers, or Prue gets sent to prison for murder. It was perfect, flawless, and for a time it seemed it had succeeded. I was actually holding their powers in my hand, then something happened. Damned if I know how, but the Halliwells somehow regained their powers at the last minute and defeated me. Hannah and I had a lot to answer for when we got back to Hell, but I convinced them to send us back to Earth, they agreed, telling me not to come back until I have gotten the powers of the Charmed Ones. Rex turns to another page, there is a newspaper story taped there, Rex had clipped it from one of the local tabloid papers. The headline read as follows: STABBING VICTIM MAKES REMARKABLE RECOVERY!! Rex would have dismissed the story right then and there, except the victim in question had been Phoebe Halliwell. Apparently the inside source for this story was one of the doctors that worked at the hospital where Phoebe was taken. He swore that she had been near death one day, and perfectly healthy the next. None of the mainstream press would believe the story, so it had ended up in tabloids alongside such stories like HITLER IS ALIVE IN ARGENTINA AT 110!!, and ELVIS WAS ABDUCTED BY ALIENS, GOVERNMENT KNOWS ALL ABOUT IT!! Of course, the average person wouldn't believe it, but Rex did, because it was Phoebe Halliwell. Rex resumes his thinking: I would sure like to know what happened there. According to this article, some street urchin the Halliwells took in, turned on Phoebe and stabbed her. The doctor stated that the wound was serious, that she was in danger of death, but then, BOING! She's up and well again. That can't be a coincidence, there is something more at work here. Someone or something is looking out for the Halliwells. Could it have been one of the white-lighters, I had heard of them, but had always dismissed them as nonsense. Or perhaps another good witch intervened, there are sure enough of them in the world. Rex's thoughts turn to another recent adventure: Take the trip back to Salem of 1692 as another case. We had gone back to have the Halliwell's ancestors, Melinda Warren and her daughter, both killed, thus insuring the Halliwell line never got started in the first place. By all rights, the Halliwell sisters should have ceased to exist the moment Hannah and I went back in time, but they didn't. Somehow they got to Salem and stopped my plan cold. When Hannah and I decided to try again, the Diamond of Ages, the means by which we time traveled, had been destroyed. Once again fate smiled on the Halliwells at my expense. Rex gets up and walks over to the window. Looking out into the night, he thinks: If only I could figure out just what is looking out for the Halliwells, then perhaps I could find a way to deal with it. Once that is out of the way, perhaps the Halliwells would then be vulnerable. If I could just have one break, one lucky break. Rex turns around to see Hannah in the doorway: "I didn't hear you come in." he tells her. Hannah looks over the notebook Rex has open on the desk. "You still pouring over that thing?" she asks him. Rex admits that he is saying: "The secret to beating the Halliwells may lie in these notes somewhere. I feel I am close to an answer, but it is just out of reach." Hannah walks over and puts her arms around him. "You'll find the answer." she tells him. "Now come to bed, I'm getting lonely." Rex takes one long look at the revealing nightie she is wearing: "Right behind you." he says.

The next day, Phoebe is at the Quake, having a coffee while Piper works: "Careful, Pheebs." Piper taunts. "All that sitting around drinking coffee could be tiring." Phoebe gives Piper the "why does everyone pick on me?" look and says: "It just so happens that I have several job prospects on the horizon right now." Yeah, Piper replies and goes on to say: "It always seems those prospects stay just beyond that horizon."

At this point, Rex appears in astral form, but no one can see him. He sees Piper and Phoebe over at the bar and sneaks over to hear what they are saying.

At this point, Prue arrives from the auction house, complaining about her new boss, Claire: "I swear that there is no pleasing the woman." Prue says to her sisters. "She wants everything done her way or nothing. Sometimes I find myself wishing we had Rex back."

Astral-Rex, standing right there, hears the comment. "Thank you." he can't help saying.

Piper cautions Prue, telling to be careful what she wishes for, she might just get it. "I don't think we have to worry about that." Prue replies. "Rex wouldn't dare show his face around the auction house now. There is still that murder rap out on him, for killing poor Jamie." Prue pauses as she remembers the innocent security guard who became a pawn in Rex and Hannah's attempt to frame Prue for murder. "Besides." she continues, "Claire would have him for breakfast, considering the financial state he left the auction house in." The three sisters share a laugh over this.

Astral-Rex is not amused: "Very funny." he growls. He decides he's heard enough for now and fades out.

Now Phoebe gets up to leave: "Time to pound the pavement." She says good-bye to her sisters and heads out.

Piper stares after her for a minute and wonders if this time Phoebe will get a job that will last more than a couple of days. Prue thinks and concludes: "I wouldn't bet on it."

It is a pleasant day in San Francisco and Phoebe is enjoying it as she gets on a bus. Fifteen minutes later, the bus has deposited her in another part of town. "Now just where is that address?" she mutters to herself, trying to remember the location of her next job interview. She sees a man in a flannel shirt get up from a bench and notices that he has left his hat behind. Phoebe goes and picks the hat up, intending to return it to the man. Suddenly her powers kick in and she has a vision of that same man being hit by a car. Quickly she runs to catch up with him.

A few minutes later, the man is crossing a busy street, when a car comes barreling right towards him. The driver sees the man at the last minute and slams on the brakes. The man freezes with fear. Suddenly, Phoebe shoots out onto the street and shoves the man out of the way. He is safe, but the car now strikes Phoebe, who flies backward and hits her head on the pavement. She is knocked unconscious.

Back at the Quake, Prue tells Piper that she has to get home. Piper says she'll wait and see what happens with Phoebe: "She promised to come back her and tell me how her interview went." Piper says.

Meanwhile a crowd has gathered around the unconscious Phoebe. Someone suggests calling 9-1-1 when Phoebe opens her eyes and sits up. Despite the people in the crowd urging her to lie still, Phoebe gets up and wanders away. "Guess she wasn't as badly hurt as we thought." someone says and the crowd slowly breaks up. No one notices that Phoebe's purse, that had been knocked off her arm when the car hit her, is still lying in the street. At least no one notices it yet.

Phoebe wanders the streets and is very confused. She has no idea how she got here, in fact, she has no idea who she is at all.

Some time later, Prue looks up as a worried Piper comes home. "What's wrong?" Prue asks her sister. "It's Phoebe." Piper replies. "She didn't come back to the Quake like she said she would. So I went looking for her, she had told me what part of town she was going to. I searched around there for a while but couldn't find a trace of her." Prue carefully listens to Piper's story. "Now I'm worried." Prue says, "Phoebe may be irresponsible at times, but she would never just vanish like that without calling us. Something must have happened to her." She turns and heads towards the door, telling Piper to come along. Piper asks where they are going. "Back to where you were searching. I want to give it another try." Prue replies: "If we can't find her in two hours, we'll go see Andy. Maybe he can help." The two sisters head out the door.

Astral-Rex has been listening to the whole conversation: "Very interesting." he says and fades out.

Coming out of the trance, Rex looks up at Hannah. "An interesting situation has just developed with the Halliwells. They seem to have misplaced Phoebe." He gets up and walks over to a window. "Do you know what this means?" Hannah asks him as she walks up and puts her arms around him. "Yes." Rex replies: "The power of The Three will be diminished. This could work to our advantage. Still I don't think we should rush into this blindly. Many a warlock has made that mistake and paid the price for it. Patience is a virtue, and right now, I have lots of it."

Phoebe is still roaming the streets, having no idea where to go. Her head is aching badly and she is feeling a little queasy. She spots a sign on a nearby building: ST. JOSEPH'S SHELTER FOR THE HOMELESS. Seeing this as shelter, Phoebe heads towards it.

Inside St. Joseph's, the nun who runs the shelter, Sister Mary Catherine, is getting things ready for the night, when she looks up and sees Phoebe come stumbling in. Concerned how sick this young woman looks, Sister Mary walks over to Phoebe: "What's wrong?" the concerned nun asks. Phoebe just looks at her and replies: "Can you tell me who I am?" Sister Mary gets more worried, clearly this young woman is sick. She places the back of her hand on Phoebe's forehead and feels a raging fever: "My God, you're burning up!" She takes Phoebe's arm: "Come with me. We have a small room upstairs for just such an emergency."

Meanwhile, Prue and Piper comb the streets, looking for their missing sister. Piper is searching a back alley, when two sleazy looking characters walk up to her. "Hey cutie." One of them says, looking her over. "How's about you and me doing a little one on one. If you know what I mean." Piper knows exactly what he means: "I don't have time for this." she says and promptly freezes the two goons where they stand. Piper quickly exits from the scene and when the goons unfreeze, they are left open mouthed at the sight of a young woman who vanished right before their eyes. "What do they put in tequila these days?" one of them asks.

Prue is waiting on the street when Piper returns. "Just had a run-in with two rather unkept gentlemen." She tells Prue. "Any sign of Phoebe?" Prue shakes her head: "No." she replies. "I think it's time we went to see Andy." The two of them hurry on their way.

Sister Mary has led Phoebe to a small upstairs room in the shelter. After getting Phoebe out of her clothes (except for her undergarments), which Sister Mary says she will have washed and dried, Phoebe slips into a cot that has been set up in the room, tucking herself under the blankets. Sister Mary goes out and soon comes back with a bowl of cool water and a cloth. Slowly she dips the cloth into the water and then presses it to Phoebe's forehead. "That feels good." Phoebe moans, the water giving some relief from her fever. Sister Mary tells her to rest, they will talk in the morning. "Sounds good to me." Phoebe says just before she drifts off to sleep.

Prue and Piper arrive at the police station only to find Andy waiting for them. "Prue." he says. "I've been trying to reach you for some time now. Come with me." He leads them back to his desk where they see a man in flannel shirt, the same man Phoebe had pushed out of the way of the car, sitting there. "This is Vince Sagan." Andy says, indicating to the man. "I think you should hear what he has to say." Andy turns and introduces the Halliwells to Vince: "This is Prue and Piper Halliwell, they are the sisters of the woman who saved you today." Vince gets up and shakes the sister's hands. They he says: "I was there when your sister got hit by the car. In fact, she pushed me out of the way." Suddenly, Piper blurts out: "Hit by a car?" but Prue places a hand on her shoulder and motions for Vince to continue. After a few seconds, he does: "She hit her head and was out cold for a few minutes, but then got up and walked away. We, me and the rest of the crowd that had gathered, all assumed she was okay. Then I found this." he holds up a purse, Phoebe's purse, and then hands it to Prue. "I wanted to give it back to her." Vince continues, "But I didn't see what direction she had gone in. I looked around, but couldn't find her, so I came her to turn the purse in. When they saw who it belonged to, they referred me to Officer Trudeau here." he indicates Andy. At this point, Andy comes forward, thanks Vince for his time, and tells Prue: "Officially we can't do anything for twenty-four hours, (or is it forty-eight hours, I'm not sure) that's when I can file a Missing Persons Report, but I will take a look around the area she was last seen in." Prue mentions that she and Piper had already tried it. Andy nods his head and says: "But another look won't hurt. Why don't you two go home and try to get some rest. I promise if I do find out anything, I will call you immediately."

When Prue and Piper arrive home, they have a faint hope that Phoebe has come home while they were out, but that hope is dashed when they see that the house is empty. "I don't like this." Prue says as she holds up Phoebe's purse, "She just wouldn't leave this lying in the street. This has all her money, drivers license, I.D. Cards and other important things in it." Piper, agreeing with Prue adds: "That man, Vince, said she hit her head and was knocked out. Suppose she has amnesia and doesn't remember who she is." The thought of her younger sister wandering the streets having no clue to her identity is making Piper very frightened. Although scared herself, Prue tries to be reassuring, "Andy told us that he will try to find her. Perhaps she has found shelter somewhere." She puts a hand on Piper's shoulder, "Let's not assume the worst and give up hope just yet." Prue then suggests that they try to take Andy's advice and get some rest. Piper agrees, although both of them know that they won't get much sleep tonight.

Andy does go down to the part of town where the accident happened. He talks to several people, who while they witnessed the actual accident, they didn't see where Phoebe went afterwards. Finally, a frustrated Andy calls it a night.

The next morning, back at the shelter, Phoebe wakes up. Her fever has broken and she feels much better, although she still has no idea who she is. The door opens and Sister Mary, with Phoebe's washed and dried clothes, comes in: "Feeling better, dear?" she asks Phoebe. "I am, thank you." Phoebe replies, sits up, and then notices her mouth is quite dry. "Can I please have something to drink?" Sister Mary smiles and holds up a glass of fresh orange juice. Phoebe thanks her, takes the glass, and drinks it, feeling the coolness flow down her throat. After she has finished, Phoebe comments: "That was refreshing." Sister Mary pulls up a chair. "Do you have any memories of you are now?" she asks Phoebe. Phoebe shakes her head. "No, my memories start with me walking down the street just before I found this shelter, before that it's a complete blank. Except for the dreams I had last night." Interested, Sister Mary asks Phoebe to describe what she saw in the dreams. "It's hard to remember." Phoebe replies. "I saw a house, two young women, and a cat. For a second, just before I woke up, I thought I knew what it all meant, but now it's gone again." She looks at Sister Mary, "I hope I'm not causing any inconveniences here." Sister Mary shakes her head: "You can stay here as long as you need to." she reassures Phoebe. Phoebe thanks her and then adds: "Well then perhaps I can help out around here. After all you have taken me in, the least I can do is repay you somehow. I can sweep up, help in the kitchen, serve the food. All you need to do is ask." Sister Mary tells Phoebe that her help would be welcome. "But right now you get some more rest. Later on we'll see what we can arrange."

Prue and Piper are having a quiet breakfast. Andy had just called and said that he couldn't find Phoebe. "What if she's de..." Piper begins, but Prue cuts her off. "We'll have none of that kind of talk. Phoebe is alive, and we will find her, I promise you that." Prue then turns and walks out of the kitchen, with Piper staring after her.

Prue wanders into the living room, sits down, and begins to think: God, sometimes being the oldest can be stressful, especially now. Where is Phoebe? What's happened to her? Could I have done something to prevent this? Could Piper have? I could ask myself these questions forever and not come up with an answer. What would Grams have done in a situation like this? Maybe I should use the Book of Shadows to contact the spirit world, get in touch with Grams, ask her advice. Prue then squelches that idea. I can't do that, I can't go running to Grams every time an emergency comes up. Besides Grams wouldn't want it like that, she would want us to solve problems on our own, like the responsible witches that we are. Just why does it always fall to me? Prue looks up as Piper comes into the room. "Sorry I snapped at you like that." Prue tells her sister. "It's okay." Piper replies, "I probably would have done the same thing." she then considers something: "It's ironic, Phoebe has always complained that her power was not as good as ours. But now it would really come in handy. Perhaps one of her visions would tell us where to look." Prue then makes a decision: "I'm going to call in sick today. One of us should stay here, just in case Phoebe does come home, or Andy finds something."

While the two sisters have their conversation, Astral-Rex stands nearby, listening.

Soon, after coming out of the trance, Rex wanders into the study, (Hannah is out shopping for food) pulls out the notebook, and jots down his latest thoughts: The absence of Phoebe does weaken the power of the Charmed Ones, but Prue and Piper would still be a formidable force to go against, and I can't take that risk. If only I knew for certain where Phoebe was, perhaps then there is something I could use to turn the odds to my favor. All I can do is watch and wait.

Sister Mary has taken Phoebe up on her offer of help and now Phoebe works in the shelter's kitchen, getting the dishes ready for lunch. One of the volunteer chefs brushes past her with a pot of hot soup, suddenly Phoebe's power kicks in and she has a vision of him slipping on a grease spot and badly scalding himself with the hot soup. She grabs the chef: "Wait." she says, "There is a grease spot on the floor, about a foot in front of you. You'll slip if you're not careful." The chef looks at her for an instant, puts the pot of soup down, and checks the floor. Sure enough, there is a grease spot. "Hey thanks." he tells her. "You just saved me from some major burns. How did you know what would have happened?" To this, Phoebe has no answer: "I have no idea." She replies, "I just knew somehow." The chef shrugs his shoulders, thanks her again, and goes on his way. Phoebe is baffled. "How did I do that?" she asks herself. "Could this have something to do with my lost identity?" She has no answer.

Later on, after all the homeless in the shelter have been served, Phoebe eats her own lunch in the kitchen. Sister Mary walks up to her: "You've done a great job here..I wish I knew what your name was." Phoebe smiles at her: "So do I." she replies. "It feels very odd not to know what my own name is. Do I have any family? Or friends? Are they looking for me? I have so many questions, so few answers." Seeing how frustrated Phoebe is becoming by this conversation, Sister Mary then changes the subject: "One of the chefs told me that you prevented him from burning himself. How did you do that?" Phoebe shakes her head and replies: "I wish I knew. It's like I could see the future somehow. Don't ask me how or why?" Sister Mary only smiles. "Perhaps this is a gift you have. It is said that Joan of Arc also had visions and heard voices, and she's a Saint now. It is not for us to question the gifts that God has bestowed upon us, just treasure it as best you can." Phoebe finished her soup and stand up: "I'll think about that for a while." she says. "Now I believe I'll do some sweeping up in the dining room. Lunchtime is almost over."

At the Quake, Piper is doing her best to do her job and not be distracted, but it is very hard. When a waiter drops some glasses, Piper all but kills the guy: "WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU?" she yells at him. "IS IT SO DAMNED HARD TO CARRY SOME GLASSES, FOR GOD'S SAKE. I SHOULD FIRE YOU RIGHT ON..." Then she manages to get control of herself. Looking at the waiter, who is about ready to faint, Piper apologizes: "Sorry, I lost my head there, I had a bad night. Carry on." Looking somewhat relieved to be still alive, the waiter walks away. Piper goes back to the bar and sees Andy walk in. "Any news?" she asks as he approaches. "Sorry." Andy replies. "Are you okay? I heard that chewing out you gave that waiter, it's just not like you." Piper smiles at him and says: "I'm fine, just that all this worrying about Phoebe has gotten me on edge. I keep expecting the phone to ring and some voice asking me to come down and identify a body which..." she breaks off. Andy reaches up a hand and touches her gently on the cheek. "That hasn't happened." he tells her in a soothing voice. "While there's life, there's hope." Piper, almost in tears, now wonders how Prue could possibly have let a wonderful, caring man like Andy get away. If only he wasn't Prue's ex-boyfriend. Piper thinks to herself. If only.

Phoebe is sweeping up the shelter dining room, when a man walks up to her. "Can I help you with something?" she asks him. The man asks for Sister Mary Catherine and Phoebe directs him over to her. She watches as the two of them have a conversation. Soon, the man finishes what he has to say and leaves. Sister Mary walks over and compliments Phoebe on the great job she is doing. "Who was that man?" Phoebe asks. Sister Mary replies: "That was Lane Hughes of the Six O'clock News, he wants to film a story about this shelter and how we help the homeless. I've given him permission to do so."

Soon after, the news crew has set up their equipment and Lane Hughes begins filming his story. He talks to Sister Mary, some of the other nun, some of the homeless that shelter here, and finally he walks up to Phoebe: "Tell me, young lady, are you a volunteer here?" Phoebe thinks for a second and then replies: "Well sort of. You see I've lost my memory and have no idea where I really live. These kind people took me in and let me stay here, in return I volunteered to do some work around here. Feels kind of good doing some honest work." Lane Hughes thanks her and turns back to his cameraman: "It is the kindness of people like Sister Mary and this young woman here." he indicates Phoebe. "Who herself is living here, that makes one believe there is still plenty of goodness left in the world. This is Lane Hughes, reporting for the Six O'clock News."

That evening, Hannah is watching the news, when the story about the shelter comes on. "Rex! Get in here!" she shouts. Rex comes out of the study, wondering what all the noise is about, just in time to see Lane Hughes talking to Phoebe. After the story end, Rex clicks off the television: "So it seems Phoebe has lost her memory." He looks at Hannah. "This is it! The break I have been waiting for. But we must move fast, who knows who else may have seen that news broadcast." He goes back into the study and begins rooting around through his desk. "Ah! Here they are." He shows Hannah some pictures taken at a charity dinner held by the auction house, back when he was still running it. There are several pictures of Rex posing with the Halliwell sisters. Finally he finds the one he needs, one of him alone with Phoebe. "Quickly." he tells Hannah. "Call the Hilton and make a room reservation for a party of three. I'd rather direct this operation from there, rather than here. See if you can get a room for tonight. As for me, I'm going to pay a visit to St. Joseph's shelter."

Prue and Piper are watching the same newscast, when the shelter story comes on. At first they cannot believe their eyes. "It's Phoebe!" Piper shouts, "We've found her!" Prue is also grateful. "You were right, Piper. She does have amnesia. Come on, we have to go get her."

Phoebe is about start cleaning up the supper remains when Sister Mary comes in, saying there is someone here to see Phoebe. Phoebe replies: "Well show whoever it is in, maybe I'll finally get a clue as to who I am." Sister Mary agrees and soon the door opens, it's Rex! Smiling he walks up to Phoebe: "Phoebe darling, I've been worried sick about you." he says, hoping Phoebe will buy it. "Just who might you be?" Phoebe asks him. Rex puts on a fake look of surprise, "You mean you don't remember me? Your boyfriend, Rex? We've been going together now for two years. Here, let me show you." He pulls out the picture of him with Phoebe and shows her. Due to the confused state of her mind, the picture convinces her of Rex's sincerity. "So my name's Phoebe. Nice to finally have a name. So where do we go from here?" Rex tells her that he has everything all arranged and that she shouldn't worry. "Okay let's go." Phoebe says. She turns and thanks Sister Mary for her kindness, but the Sister is worried for some reason. "Are you sure this is the right thing to do?" she asks Phoebe. "Something about that man really bothers me." Phoebe tells the Sister not to worry. "Everything will be alright."

About ten minutes later, Prue and Piper arrive at the shelter. Tracking down Sister Mary, they ask if a young woman is staying here. "You must mean Phoebe, well this is quite something. A man, he said he was her boyfriend, came here not to long ago and picked her up." Prue is confused, "Her boyfriend?" she asks. "Yes." Sister Mary replies, "He had a British accent, said his name was...." she thinks for a second. "Rex." At this point, Prue and Piper feel like their stomachs have dropped down around their feet. They thank the Sister and head out of the shelter. Sister Mary stares after them, her face full of worry.

When they get out onto the street, Prue and Piper talk freely. "Rex." Piper says, "But how did he know? He may have seen the newscast, but he knows that Phoebe would never go willingly with him unless he had advance knowledge that she had amnesia." Prue makes the conclusion: "He knew because that son of a bitch has been spying on us. Remember his little astral projection trick of his. He must have overheard our conversations." Piper asks what now, and for the moment, Prue has no idea.

Hannah has indeed managed to get a room at the Hilton and is waiting when Rex and Phoebe arrive. She bristles when Rex introduces her as his sister. Seeing this, Rex tells her to step out into the corridor with him. Once they are there, he tells her: "Look Hannah, I know you don't like this, but it is only temporary. We need her, because only one of the sisters can remove the Book of Shadows from the house." Hannah looks at him and wonders how they can pull this off. "Just watch me." Rex says.

Phoebe looks up as Rex and Hannah come back into the room. "Everything is okay." he tells Phoebe and then asks her. "Do you have any memory as to why we are here?" Phoebe says no. "Well then let me fill you in." Rex sits down next to her and begins to spin his tale: "A few months ago, two women, who I had trusted as friends, stole something from me. An old book that had been in my family for generations. It's called the Book of Shadows. We have been tracking them ever since and finally the trail led here to San Francisco, where the two women have a house. Our plan was as follows, Hannah and I would lure them away for a while, then you would break into the house and recover the book, which I believe they keep in their attic." He looks away. "Of course if you are unable to go through with it now, I'll understand." Phoebe in her current state, falls for it, hook, line, and sinker. "No Rex." she says. "If it means that much to you, I'll do it." Rex, who really should get an Oscar for his performance, says: "Thank you, darling. You can't know how much this means to me." He grabs her and kisses her passionately, Hannah quietly fumes in the background. After the kiss ends, Rex continues: "Here's the final part of the plan. After you have procured the book, go to the San Francisco Zoological Gardens, Hannah and I will meet you there. We'll wait until about ten o'clock in the evening, then we'll begin.

As ten approaches, Prue and Piper are in their kitchen, thinking furiously about how to find Phoebe and Rex, when Astral-Rex appears beside them and says into both their ears: "You've just received a call from Andy. Rex and Phoebe have been spotted near The Presidio. You have to get there at once." Prue and Piper look at each other. "Let's go." Prue says and the two of them dash out of the house.

Hiding in the bushes outside, Phoebe watches Prue and Piper get in their car and drive off. Once they are gone, she slips out of the bushes and approaches the front door. She tries the door, but it is locked. Something about this house seems familiar to her, but before she can figure it out, Astral-Rex appears beside her. "Break in." he commands and Phoebe breaks the window on the door, which enables her to reach in and unlock it.

Standing in the front hall, the feelings of familiarity are stronger, but Astral-Rex is there, urging her on. "Go to the attic, get the Book of Shadows, do not stop under any circumstances." Phoebe does indeed go up to the attic and sees the Book of Shadows. "Bring it to the Zoological Gardens. Now!" Astral-Rex barks. Phoebe grabs the Book and heads out of the house.

At the Zoological Gardens, Rex comes out of his trance. "I was worried for a minute there, but she is on her way." He looks at Hannah. "After she has given us the Book, you can kill her." Hannah's mouth all but waters in anticipation.

Driving through the night, Piper turns to Prue and asks: "Did Andy really call us?" Prue replies: "I think so, but it's strange that..." She breaks off as enlightenment dawns on both of them. The car does a quick U-Turn, tires screeching all the way.

Getting back to the house, Prue and Piper find the door standing open. Going up to the attic, they see that the Book of Shadows is gone. "Oh God, we're screwed." Piper moans. Suddenly the Ouija Board comes to life. Prue goes over and puts her hands on the pointer. "Quick, write this down." She tells Piper, "I think this is going to be important."

Back at the Zoological Gardens, Rex is making his big plans: "Once the Book of Shadows is in our hands, nothing will stand against us. We can take over this country, perhaps even the world. No one, no witch, will ever stand in our way again!" Hannah looks out into the darkened gardens and spots Phoebe approaching with the Book. "Here she comes now."

Phoebe is about half-way to where Rex and Hannah are standing when she has a very powerful vision, more powerful than she has ever had before:

It is a cold January day in Washington D.C., the year is 2005, and Rex Buckland is there, Hannah at his side. He has one hand on a Bible and the other upraised. He is repeating a famous speech, "I, Rex Buckland, do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will..." As he says this, Rex's eyes light up like those of a starving man suddenly having a gourmet feast placed before him.

It is now several years later, in Chicago, and their is a huge demonstration going on. They are protesting President Buckland's decision to suspend the Constitution. "GIVE US BACK OUR RIGHTS!!" the people shout out. Suddenly a military style truck pulls up and soldiers clad in gleaming black uniforms get out. Without warning they open fire on the demonstrators. Bodies fall everywhere, blood fills the streets, there are cries of the dying and wounded.

A firing squad of the soldiers in black are lining up a group of people against a wall. On of the prisoners is Sister Mary! A guard captain announces: "For crimes of treason against the state, and our Great Leader, President Buckland, you are all sentenced to summary execution." He walks over to the where his men and standing and gives the order: "Ready! Aim! Fire!" Bullets fly out and all the prisoners, including Sister Mary, are shot to pieces.

The cities of America are burning, death and terror now reigns in what was once the Land of The Free. The figure of Rex Buckland is seen towering over it all, the Book of Shadows clasped in his hand.

The vision ends, and even with amnesia, Phoebe knows what it means. "You've lied to me!" She yells at Rex. "Tricked me! I'll die before I let you have this Book!" She then turns and starts to run in the opposite direction.

Rex is beside himself with rage. He is not going to be stopped now. "Don't let her get away!" he shouts as he and Hannah take after Phoebe.

Prue and Piper arrive at the Zoological Gardens. Seeing no sign of anyone, they decide to take a look around.

Phoebe is now running alongside Lake Merced, with Rex and Hannah close behind.

"There they are!" Piper shouts as she spots the three figures running along side the lake. She and Prue start running. "Phoebe, over here!" Prue shouts.

Phoebe, seeing Prue and Piper, veers towards them. Although she still does not recognize them, she figures they will be better company than those two who are chasing her.

Turning her attention to Rex and Hannah, Prue yells: "Go jump in the lake!" and uses her powers to hurl the two of them twenty feet through the air and they land, with a loud splash, in the middle of Lake Merced.

Phoebe runs up to Prue and Piper. "I take it this Book really belongs to you two?" she says and holds up the Book of Shadows. "It does." Piper replies, "But most of all, you belong to us, you're our sister." She hugs Phoebe, Prue does so a second later. "You're sister? I..." Phoebe says and then doubles over as it all comes back to her. Looking up at her sisters, she says: "I remember! I remember it all!" She is glad to have her memories back. "Let's go home." Prue says.

Splashing around in the middle of the lake, Rex and Hannah are not happy. "How could they have known where we were?" Hannah asks in frustration. "How?" Rex has the answer. "That damned unknown force again!"

During the drive home, Phoebe is apologizing to her sisters: "I keep thinking about what I almost did. That future we visited in 2024 really would have happened, and I would have been responsible for it." Piper places a hand on Phoebe's shoulder and reassures her. "No it wasn't you fault, Pheebs. You had no idea what you were doing. You were confused and alone, Rex exploited that. But we stopped him and got you back. That's all that matters." Phoebe considers: "You're right, Piper. Thanks for pointing that out to me." Phoebe then remembers one other detail. "Can we stop at drug store somewhere?" When Piper asks why, Phoebe replies: "I need to pick up some mouth wash. Rex kissed me. Euuuughhhh!" Prue and Piper burst out laughing.

Breakfast in the Halliwell house, the next morning, is a happy occasion. Prue had taken a few minutes to call Andy and let him know that Phoebe had been found, safe and sound. Phoebe comes into the kitchen, wondering about something: "How did you two know where to find me last night? I didn't think to ask that until now." Piper shows Phoebe a message on a piece of paper and explains that it came through the Ouija Board last night. The message reads as follows: GO TO SAN FRANCISCO ZOOLOGICAL GARDENS IMMEDIATELY! PHOEBE IS THERE! SIGNED, A FRIEND. Phoebe looks at the message, guessing who the friend in question is: Leo she thinks, It must have been Leo.

At this point, Astral-Rex appears in the kitchen, ready to do some more spying. Then he notices all the Halliwells staring at him. "You can see me?" he asks. Prue marches up to him: "Yes." she replies, "We can see you. When we got home last night, we had a little talk about your astral snooping on us. So we looked in the Book of Shadows and found a spell that tweaked up our senses a little bit. In short, Rex, this advantage you had over us is now gone. We can see you just as well as you can see us." Rex knows when he is licked. "I look forward to our next battle." he tells the Halliwells before he fades away.

At this point, Phoebe announces that she has to get to work. Piper, wondering if her hearing has gone bad, asks Phoebe: "Did you say work?" Phoebe replies that is exactly what she said and heads out the door. Piper looks at Prue: "Are you sure she is completely recovered?"

At St. Joseph's, Sister Mary is just getting ready for the day when she hears a familiar voice: "Could you use an extra hand around here?" Phoebe is standing there. "I'm back, full memories and all. I'll tell you all about it as we work." Sister Mary thanks Phoebe and the two of them get to work as we fade out.
