What Happens Next?

By Danielle

Disclaimers: It's summer and it's hot out, making me a little prone to sunstroke, leading to hallucinations. So even though I may think I own the characters in this fic at the moment, I'm sure I actually don't. Mad props to Katims and Metz and whoever else had a hand in getting this shiz-ow to the TV. (Sorry, Dupes got the better of me there.)

Authors Notes: This is a random M/M piece that came to me as I was driving home from work. I am getting very excited about the new season, hence the sheer randomness of the thing. Also, an apology is in order- I have been slacking on my Roswell writing of late. I've been very caught up in Buffy-world. But here's a promise- I totally intend to get back to my "No Angel" series and the Dream Verse soon, and here's a smidgen of the M/M lovin' to hold you over. Cheers!

It had seemed like the day would never end. She had worked 10 hours straight- all day, on her feet, serving food to people who had no idea in the world how much tips mean to a waitress. It had been pure torture. In and out of the kitchen, all day long, catching glimpses of him and trying not to think about what they'd done for the first time only last night. What a difference a day makes, huh?

She was outside the back door of the Crashdown, trying to cool off in the night air while Liz and Michael finished cleaning up. She thought back over the intense events of the last 24 hours. Only one day ago, Tess had still been on earth, pregnant with Max's baby, though Maria hadn't known that until this morning. Alex's murder had still been unsolved. Michael had still been planning on going home with the others. And as for herself… well 24 hours ago, Maria DeLuca had still been a virgin.

She was mulling over the changes the day had brought to them as a group when she felt a pair of strong arms circle her waist. "Hey, hon."

Hon? That's a new one, she thought to herself as a smile broke out across her face. File that under new things the past 24 hours had brought- Michael was now referring to her as "Hon". "Hey yourself."

"So… everything is all done in there. Ready to go home?"

She spun slowly in his arms to face him. "Home? Your home or my home?"

He tilted his face down so that his forehead touched hers and he was looking straight into her eyes as he pulled her closer to him. "Mine?" he asked hopefully.

"Is that an invitation, Spaceboy?"

He swallowed hard, as if he was afraid she'd say no. "Uh, yeah. I thought we could, um, well, you know."

She raised an eyebrow impertinently. "Oh did you now, Mr. Guerin?"

"Well, yeah, since we, um, did it last night, I thought we could try it again and see if we still like it?"

She grinned devilishly. "I think that can be arranged."

His eyes lit up as she spoke, and his mouth immediately swooped down to capture hers. "God, I love you."

"I …love you… too, Michael", she said between kisses until she finally pulled away. "But what happens next?"

He looked confused, but tried to answer. "Well, I thought we could go back to my place and maybe we could put on some music and light some candles…"

"No, silly I mean with all of us. Everything is all up in the air, you know? I mean, Max is a dad and his son is out there somewhere across the universe on another planet. And Liz, I know she wants to help him find his son, but she must still feel like crap because of everything with Tess. And Izzy- she just found out that someone she thought she could trust killed the guy she was in love with. And Kyle lost part of his family, you know? Everything is all messed up. Where do we all go from here? Everything I thought I knew has been completely turned around in the last 24 hours. Including you."

"Me?" he asked simply.

"Yes, you. Yesterday you were my alien boyfriend who I loved very much, but I never planned on telling you that because I knew you were leaving someday- probably for good, and then where would I be? Today, you're my alien boyfriend who loved me enough to give up the home planet he'd been trying to find his entire life. You're the man I love, and you know it. And more than that, you're the first person I ever made love with. Michael, as of today, you know, you're pretty much my everything."

He kissed her neck softly. "Well, when you put it that way I guess things are different."

"So back to my question. What happens next? Where do we go from here?"

Michael shrugged his shoulders in that charming, disarming way of his. "I don't know, Maria. I really have no clue. But I'll tell you one thing- if tomorrow has half as much in store for us as today did, I can't wait for the future. Especially if it's with you."

Maria sighed. How did he always know how to comfort her? She drew his face down to hers for a long, sweet kiss. As she broke away from the kiss she smiled up at him. "So, we ready to go home?"

"Is that an invitation, Blondie?"

"You know it, Spaceboy." She grabbed his hand and pulled him inside so they could collect their things and get out of there. She smiled as she did, her heart a little lighter. After all, the future was waiting, and she certainly didn't want to put that off any longer.
