Jesse's Girl

By Danielle

Disclaimers: The characters don't belong to me- who knows who they belong to now, but whoever it is better take care of them or I'll kick their ass! Just kidding.

Author's Notes: I haven't written anything since the finale. I've been a little too sad and a little too busy. In any case, this came to me recently, and I thought I should get it down. This is a Kyle POV set after the series finale, maybe 6-9 months later. Enjoy!

The VW bus was really hot and sweaty. But there were 6 of them cramped in there, and of course it had no AC. It was sauna-like. You'd have thought that at 10:30 pm the day might have cooled off, but such was not the luck one had in Texas. He turned his head and peeked behind him into the back seat- Max and Liz were completely passed out. He, Max and Liz had split the day driving shift equally, and Michael was now driving, with Maria asleep in the passenger seat and Isabel camped out on his shoulder.

Sometimes it was hard for him to sleep in the van. Especially with Isabel in such close proximity. They were always paired off together, he and Isabel. It wasn't that he minded; in fact he relished the opportunity to spend time alone with her again. It's just that it was getting harder and harder to be alone with her and not tell her how he felt about her.

She was married for crying out loud- she had a husband out there waiting for her to come back to him. She was Jesse's girl, not his, as he had to remind himself on a daily basis. But every day, seeing Max and Liz and Maria and Michael together and happy was killing him. It made him want things he could never have, look at Isabel in ways that he shouldn't. He'd known he was in love with her since last New Year's Eve. But it was different then- Jesse was there, and she belonged to him. But here, on the road, there was no Jesse, and his feelings seemed to grow stronger daily.

It wasn't her fault they always got paired off. It wasn't anyone's really. But it always seemed to happen that Max and Michael were off checking things out, making sure they were safe. And Liz and Maria, well they'd always been best friends- so they'd always end up together if they weren't with their significant others. Which more often than not left him and Isabel to take care of whatever task the others needed them to. Whether the van broke down and we needed someone to go into town to price out parts or if we were running low on supplies and everyone else was too busy with other things to go shopping, it seemed that he and Izzy were the ones that got nominated.

Of course, sometimes the others just wanted to be alone, and that's when it was the most difficult. Neither couple was too good at hiding the fact that they wanted him and Izzy to take off for a few hours, and as the months passed it became increasingly hard for them to come up with new time-killing activities. Sometimes, they would take the van and go into town and catch a movie, or if they had a little bit of money saved up they might get a bite to eat at an actual restaurant. And they always had fun- they laughed and talked and joked and generally tried to not think about the past.

But sometimes they had no money and all they could do was walk off into the woods or the desert and look at the stars quietly until an acceptable amount of time had passed. It was at these times that Kyle had the most trouble holding his tongue. Just being alone with her in the dark, looking up in wonder at the stars this angel had fallen from made his heart leap. He wanted to grab her and kiss her and tell her all the things he'd been dreaming might happen since the day they drove away in the ramshackle bus that her husband had bought for them to escape in. But then he'd look over at her, and see the sadness in her eyes, and he'd stop himself. He'd just pull her into a hug and hold her while she cried.

It was at these times that he knew he would never be worthy. He would never replace the man in her heart. He looked down at her sleeping face and brushed a stray piece of hair away from her eyes as the van rumbled along the highway. Michael looked up and caught Kyle's gaze in the rearview mirror, smiling sadly before turning his eyes back to the road. He knew; everyone knew that Isabel would always be Jesse's girl. Now if he could only get his heart to understand.

Jessie's Girl
By Rick Springfield

Jessie is a friend
Yeah, I know he's been a good friend of mine
But lately something's changed that ain't hard to define
Jessie's got himself a girl and I wanna make her mine

And she's watchin' him with those eyes
And she's lovin' him with that body, I just know it
And he's holding her in his arms late, late at night

You know I wish that I had Jessie's girl
I wish that I had Jessie's girl
Where can I find a woman like that

I play along with the charade
That doesn't seem to be a reason to change
You know I feel so dirty when they start talkin' cute
I wanna tell her that I love her, but the point is probably moot

'Cause she's watchin' him with those eyes
And she's lovin' him with that body, I just know it
And he's holding her in his arms late, late at night

You know I wish that I had Jessie's girl
I wish that I had Jessie's girl
Where can I find a woman like that

Like Jessie's girl
I wish that I had Jessie's girl
Where can I find a woman
Where can I find a woman like that

And I'm lookin' in the mirror all the time
Wonderin' what she don't see in me
And I've been funny, I've been cool with the lines
Ain't that the way love supposed to be

Tell me
Where can I find a woman like that

You know I wish that I had Jessie's girl
I wish that I had Jessie's girl
I want Jessie's girl
Where can I find a woman like that

Like Jessie's girl
I wish that I had Jessie's girl
I want, I want Jessie's girl
