Apologies that this review for game seven is a little delayed. I had hoped to publish this before I went away on my jaunt over half term, but alas I was unable to, so this has been the earliest opportunity to publish it. Game eight will be closing tomorrow (3/11) and the review will hopefully be up tomorrow, if not, then by the weekend. Game nine will also be set up tomorrow. Anyway, enough of site details, on with the review for game seven.
Congratulations to Stuart Earl for the top score of 110.
Round 1: Not a promising selection at first glance, though I did manage a seven along with a couple of other people with MIDMOST, but otherwise nothing better than this.
Round 2: Again, not a promising selection because of the K and the repeated I's and R's, though these were put to good use in PRIORS for six. Nothing better here that I could find and I think PRIORS was offered by all.
Round 3: The best here was only five in this round with QUITE and its anagram QUIET, though I thought I had managed to find another five with FUMET meaning a high-flavoured substance, such as extract of game, for flavouring dishes of food; less properly, a ragout of partridge and rabbit braised in wine, though this appears to be capitalized on dictionary.com.
Round 4: Six was the best anyone could do here with FOMENT which means to instigate or stir up (revolution or strife) or an archaic word for bathe (a part of the body) with warm or medicated lotions. This comes from the Latin verb "fomentare", from the noun "fomentum" which translates as "lotion". I got FANTOM for six, which is an alternative to "phantom", coming from Middle English.
Round 5: Numbers round and we had the classic selection of one large number and five small and the fairly high target of 793. The quickest way to get there using the selection is to say (((25 - 3) X 9) X 4) + 1 = 793.
Round 6: Five again was the best anyone could do here, with THEFT being the most popular choice. I thought I could have FUMET again, but sadly not as it appears to be capitalized.
Round 7: Round seven and seven was the best here with BELOVED. I got this word too, so not much else to comment on.
Round 8: There was a seven here with ENTHUSE, but carrying on the theme of finding the same number of letters as the round itself, I thought I had got an eight letter word - UNNETHES - but this appears to have been given as a quote from Chaucer and is unfortunately capitalized as I thought it was quite an unusual word, meaning scarcely.
Round 9: GEMMAE was offered, but I managed to get an eight this time with GEMINATE which is listed on dictionary.com as "to double" or "to arrange in pairs".
Round 10: Numbers time again and here we have the more difficult selection of the four large numbers and two small, with a relatively low target of 245. The quickest way to get there is to say ((25 - 1) X 7) + (75 + (100/50)) = 245.
Round 11: Not a particularly promising selection with the inclusion of a Z there, but I think everyone managed a seven and got the same word - ASTOUND.
Round 12: A fairly good selection here, yielding an eight letter word of MISDATED. No nine letters words, so there was nothing better here!
Round 13: TAILOR was in this selection for six, but there was a seven that I managed to spot which was ATROPIN. It is a poisonous, bitter, crystalline alkaloid, C17H23NO3, obtained from belladonna and other related plants. It is used to dilate the pupils of the eyes and as an antispasmodic. So there you have it! lol
Round 14: Last numbers selection and this time it was six small numbers with a target of 252. The quickest way to get there was to say
(7 X 4) X (7 + 2) = 252
Round 15: The conundrum went from VETDECEIT to DETECTIVE, with everyone getting the ten points according to my memory.
Well done to all of those who took part and apologies once again for this review being so belated. Game eight will close tomorrow and so please get your answers in if you want them to be scored before the game closes.
