“La belle ouvrage” is about a man, Henri Descouet (Christian Clavier) who a secretary of a famous politician, Etienne Varlon. Without Varlon knowing, he signs a suicide letter that Descouet wrote and mixed with other papers for him to sign.

After a TV interview Varlon is at home alone, and Descouet shoots him so it would look like suicide and steals the money Varlon had in his vault. When he was about to leave, one of Varlon’s political colleages enters the house, and to avoid scandal takes with his the gun and the suicide letter.

Descouet follows him by car and runs him over, taking the gun and letter from him, and puts him in the trunk of the car, later on forcing him to drink some whiskey and dropping him on a corner (so this he would appear drunk when found).

Descouet returns to the house to put back the suicide letter and gun, and then heads home.

Next day, he pretends to be surprised to see the Press and police at Varlon’s house.

When the detective tells him that he’s sure it was a homicide, Descouet lies saying anyone could’ve entered the house, and that he didn’t have a key to enter, just Varlon and his wife.

It’s there where the detective finds his killer, because after passing by the Press outside, to get inside the house, the door was locked and he had to use his key.
