‘CHARMED,’ I’M SURE

By MICHAEL STARR

June 14, 2001 -- ROSE McGowan has been signed to replace Shannen Doherty on "Charmed" - confirming an exclusive story first reported by The Post last week. McGowan, the ex-girlfriend of goth-rocker Marilyn Manson, will join Alyssa Milano and Holly Marie Combs on the Aaron Spelling-produced good-witches show, now entering its 4th season on The WB.

McGowan has starred in the movies "Driven" and "Monkeybone" and recently broke off her relationship with Manson, the goth-rocker known for wearing makeup and women’s clothing.

Doherty, who had previously been fired from "Beverly Hills, 90210" reportedly quit "Charmed" because of difficulties with Milano. Even though Doherty directed the show’s season-ending episode, she and Milano reportedly did not speak to each other unless absolutely necessary.

There’s no word yet on what McGowan’s character will be named, although it’s a good bet that her name will begin with the letter "P" - since all the female "Charmed" characters (Prue, who was played by Doherty; Phoebe, played by Milano; and Piper, played by Combs) begin with that letter.

Besides her past relationship with Manson, McGowan is best-known for her role as a sexy screen queen in "Scream" and for roles in "The Doom Generation," "Jawbreaker," "Monkeybone" and "Ready to Rumble."

"Charmed" producers had also approached ex-"Party of Five"/"Time of Your Life" star Jennifer Love Hewitt and Denise Richards to replace Doherty, but both actresses declined.

"Charmed" has always performed well for The WB (Ch. 11 here in New York) and has consistently been the network’s second-highest-rated show behind "7th Heaven," which is also produced by Spelling.

The WB is counting on "Charmed" to retain its popularity now that it’s lost "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Roswell" to rival UPN, which is hoping to cash in on The WB’s strong teen demographic.

October 4, 2001 AOL Chat

October 4th, 2001 - Just before Season 4 opening of Charmed... Rose McGowan did a chat on AOL - here is the transcript...

AOLiveMC9: Let's give a big AOL Live welcome to Rose McGowan!

Rose McGowan: Hello, everyone. Glad you could join me.

AOLiveMC9: Rose, how do you feel right now knowing that the season premiere of 'Charmed' on the East Coast is just 30 minutes away, and at the same time, that this is also your premiere on the small screen?

Rose McGowan: I wasn't nervous until you mentioned it, but now that I think about it, I definitely have butterflies in my stomach, so thanks a lot. Nervous in a good way.

AOLiveMC9: You're definitely welcome. Oh, did I mention it was only 30 minutes away? Here's our first question from the audience:

Question: Hi. Which sister are you going to click with first? Phoebe or Piper? Or maybe Leo?

Rose McGowan: LOL. I click with Phoebe first. Piper takes a little longer... but you will find out.

AOLiveMC9: Here's a question in regards to the character's personality:

Question: Hey, I hear you are going to be the "rebel" one of the sisters; is that true?

Rose McGowan: Um, I don't think she's a rebel. I think she's not sure she wants to be a witch, and she has a lot of personality and she does things in her own way.

AOLiveMC9: How would you personally like to see your character develop and grow?

Rose McGowan: I'm such a live-in-the-moment person myself that I am kind of taking the same approach with Paige. It will be more fun for both of us that way. Does that make me schizophrenic?

AOLiveMC9: Here's a question from Tigerkitten in regards to your co-stars:

Question: What do you think about working with Alyssa Milano and Holly Marie Combs? Do you think you are somewhat like your character?

Rose McGowan: I love working with Alyssa and Holly. I am having a blast. I don't think I am a lot like my character, no. But that's why it's fun. I have better taste in decoration than she does.

AOLiveMC9: Here's a question from Beddhead in regards to your future endeavors:

Question: Are you planning on doing any more films, or are you just sticking to TV for now?

Rose McGowan: Oh, I plan on doing films. Definitely. I still feel that that is my main medium. I'll be doing that in the three months I have off per year on 'Charmed.'

AOLiveMC9: Here's a question from MFRFL about working on a TV show for the first time:

Question: So far, how has your experience working on a TV show been?

Rose McGowan: It has been kicking my butt! I've never been more tired, but I think it's worth it.

AOLiveMC9: Rose, what kind of adjustments have been necessitated by working on TV versus a movie?

Rose McGowan: It's hard to mentally deal with the fact that I will know the same people a year from now, And I like living a nomadic lifestyle, so it will be hard giving that up.

AOLiveMC9: Here's a question from HoLLyMcOmBsPiPeR, an obvious fan:

Question: Does it feel funny to enter the show in the fourth season instead of the beginning?

Rose McGowan: I probably wouldn't have done the show if it were in the beginning. Because I turned down other television offers before, because they seemed as if they weren't sure things. Obviously, it's great to do something that people respond to.

AOLiveMC9: What attracted you to 'Charmed'? I read in an article that you initially thought the show wasn't exactly your type of show, but then you watched it, and it became something interesting to you.

Rose McGowan: Yes, because it was smart and wasn't something that treated its audience as if they were stupid. I think a lot of shows treat their audience as if they didn't have brains. And the show is a lot of fun, and yet has brains. Plus we get to wear cute outfits.

AOLiveMC9: Speaking of outfits, here's a fashion question from TemplarAlt:

Question: I understand that you love the fashions they dress you in on 'Charmed.' Do you get to keep those clothes?

Rose McGowan: I do get to keep them, but often after wearing the same outfit for nine days straight, I never want to see it again. Try wearing the same shirt for nine days -- you would feel the same way too.

AOLiveMC9: I know you're not nervous about the show, but here's a question from SparkleFairy7139:

Question: Are you nervous about how fans will react to your new character on 'Charmed'?

Rose McGowan: A little bit, but all I can do is show up and do the best I can. I know some people will have a hard time adjusting to Pru's being gone, but I hope they will come to dig Paige.

AOLiveMC9: Here's a question from WretchedAngel9 about a supposed rumor:

Question: Rose, I heard a rumor that along with your many other talents, you were going to start singing and have recorded a demo. I wanted to know if it was true and if there were any further developments.

Rose McGowan: Some rumors are true, some aren't.

AOLiveMC9: Here's a question from Rrb914:

Question: How do you feel about the subject matter of the show? Do you believe in magic of any sort?

Rose McGowan: I am fascinated by what kinds of magic other people believe in.

AOLiveMC9: In reference to the show, is it hard to get used to the special effects?

Rose McGowan: Yes! Alyssa and Holly told me that I would feel goofy for a while, and they were right! But it's starting to become normal, which is also scary. LOL.

AOLiveMC9: Here's another question as a follow-up to a previous thought:

Question: You say that you still think of film as your main medium. Do you have any projects coming out that we can see you in, or if not, do you have something lined up for your hiatus yet?

Rose McGowan: I have two amazing projects that don't have release dates yet. They're still being finished up. But one is called 'Rat in the Can' and the second one is called 'Vacuums,' and they are two of the best things I have ever done.

AOLiveMC9: Here's a question from CATS1214 about your previous works:

Question: Hey, how did you get started acting in independent films?

Rose McGowan: I was visiting in Los Angeles, and while standing on a street corner while waiting for someone, I was cast in a movie. So I have no advice as to how to get started. Sorry.

AOLiveMC9: Here's a question that I'm sure many people are wondering about:

Question: What is your power?

Rose McGowan: I can "orb," which is to disappear and reappear, and then I can call things to me -- telekinesis.

AOLiveMC9: AngelsHottKiss wants to know this:

Question: Rose, how did you prepare for your role on 'Charmed'?

Rose McGowan: I tried to get as much sleep as possible the night before I worked.

AOLiveMC9: Iamjacksregret poses this question:

Question: Which project have you worked on that you feel has been the most rewarding?

Rose McGowan: I love a lot of them for different reasons. But it's been an amazing experience so far to do this show, because of the different range of emotions I have been able to express. It would take four different movies to have done the stuff I have done so far.

AOLiveMC9: BACIKITTY wants to know about any future plans:

Question: Just wondering how old you are, and do you hope to have a family one day?

Rose McGowan: I'm way too young to be thinking about that stuff.

AOLiveMC9: Here's a question from Carol8557:

Question: Do you do most of your stunts?

Rose McGowan: So far, I haven't really been able to, but I am working on the producers to let me. My stuntwoman on the show told me that she was sad when she heard it was me because she has worked with me on two other films, and I have always done my own stunts. I haven't gotten into that many stunts yet for Paige.

AOLiveMC9: Here's a question about doing work from the other side of the camera:

Question: Do you have any ambitions to work behind the camera?

Rose McGowan: I wouldn't mind producing, but I have no desire to direct. You have to answer four million questions a day. I like getting things organized, but not having to talk to everybody. I am in awe of directors. They have infinite patience.

AOLiveMC9: Speaking of directors, what directors inspire you?

Rose McGowan: A lot of the old directors like George Cukor, Michael Curtiz and Billy Wilder. They directed a lot of amazing classic films. Currently I love Anthony Minghella, David Fincher. But I am always interested in new, upcoming people with vision.

AOLiveMC9: Unfortunately, we have time for one final question from the audience. Here's a question about what goes on behind the show:

Question: Are the cast into practical jokes at all, and if so, can you tell us about any particularly funny ones?

Rose McGowan: Holly likes to make faces at me off camera while I am doing my lines, making it harder to keep a straight face, but I always get her back. If 'Charmed' had a gag reel, we would be seen as definitely less than perfect, but very funny.

AOLiveMC9: Rose, I'm a big fan of yours and the show. I'm confident that you'll be a great addition to the 'Charmed' trio. Any final words for your adoring fans out there?

Rose McGowan: Thank you all for going on this wild ride with me. It's going to be a blast, and I look forward to hearing from you. Thank you for your support. It means a lot. Now go watch the show. LOL Good night.

AOLiveMC9: Thank you to the audience for attending. Until next time, AOL.
