Next Morning, Friday January 20, 1871

Another weekday morning of the family gathering for breakfast with Gene, followed by Audra, Jarrod and last being Nick moving to their seats and greeting Victoria sitting at the table upon their arrival. Noticing the empty seat across from him, “I see Heath is once again late,” Nick announces.

“Yes he is” Victoria replies, “But Nick, please control yourself; you promised me.”

“I remember,” Nick tells her as the family waits patiently for Heath to join them,

Catching sight of Heath coming up the walk Silas welcomes him in and tells him to join the family in the dining room. Replying, “Yes sir,” Heath follows his orders. Walking in the family minus Nick say goodmorning to him with Victoria suggesting he sit down. Upon replying, “Yes um,” he takes his seat across from Nick who just glares at him.

As Silas places the breakfast on the table Victoria asks of Heath, “Did you sleep well?” Heath responds, “Yes um.”

Once everyone has filled their plates and returned the dishes in the center of the table, the family bows their heads with Jarrod saying grace. As they are eating and Heath is just sitting there Victoria noticing says, “Heath, eat up.”

Responding, “Yes um,” Heath starts eating while keeping his eyes fixed on Nick.

Starting off the morning conversation, Nick says, “Jarrod what time do you think you will be going into town?”

Answering, “About ten,” Jarrod then turns and says to Heath, “How’s that sound to you Heath?” Heath replies, “Fine sir,” looking over.

“Seeing you will be going at ten that should give you Heath,” Nick says, “About three good hours working with Duke; make sure you do as much as you can before going; you won’t be able to do much after that.” Heath replies, “Yes sir.”

“Heath,” Jarrod then says, “I thought that while we’re in town I take care of a few errands I need to take care of along the way and then take you shopping for what we need and then show you my office and then end it with having some lunch at one of the restaurants, how does that sound to you?” Heath replies, “Fine sir.”

Nick then brings up, “Don’t forget the sacks of grain.”

“I will see what I could do Nick” Jarrod says “There are some things that do take priority over another. If I am able to I will if not then they will just have to wait.”

Gene then brings up, “I wish I could go. Sounds like you will be having a great time together.” Jarrod tells him, “It’ll have to wait another day Gene; sorry.”

Pouting, “Darn,” Gene says, “I always miss out on the fun things.”

“What about me Gene,” Audra joins in, “I am not going either. I have school to go to just like you do.”

“I know,” Gene whines, “But Heath is new here.”

“Heath will be new here for quite some time,” Victoria says, “You’ll get the chance to go into town with him just not today when you have school to go to.”

“Darn!” Gene says again.

“Gene” Victoria replies “We can’t always do what we want and tomorrow we will all be going into town together,” glancing over at Nick she asks, “Nick, while Jarrod and Heath go into town what do you have planned for today?”

“Why?” Nick asks of her who replies, “Well if you could find time I could use some help with the baking.” Nick says, “Me?” Bake?”

“Would you mind Nick?” Victoria asks “I do need the help. It’s a lot for just Silas and me to do alone.” Exhaling deeply “Oh very well” Nick says “I suppose I could help. Let me do a quick run of the ranch first.” Victoria responds “Thanks Nick.”

Finishing up their breakfast “We better be going” Audra announces and as she and Gene get up and are giving Victoria a kiss on the cheek they exchange goodbyes with everyone, Victoria reminds them to come straight home after school. Exiting the room, “We will,” Audra replies.

Glancing over at Heath, “Heath,” Nick asks, “Are you finished there?” Answering, “Yes sir” Nick tells him “Then you better be going. Duke is probably waiting for you,” getting up, “I’ll walk with you.” Responding, “Yes sir,” again Heath moves to the doorway with Jarrod telling him, “I’ll come and get you when it’s time to.”

“Yes sir,” Heath says again as he goes with Nick. Sitting and enjoying his coffee, “Lovely morning,” Jarrod informs Victoria sitting there.

“It gets lovelier by the days,” Victoria quips, “The tension is so thick we could cut it with a knife.” Jarrod notes, “But at least Nick held his tongue like he said he would.” Victoria says, “True.”

“And,” Jarrod mentions, “He’ll be back to help,” chuckling, “I just hope he doesn’t burn the house down.” Victoria then says, “You underestimate Nick. He could do anything when he puts his mind to it; including baking.”

“I know,” Jarrod replies, “Do you want some more help? I do have a couple of hours yet.” Victoria asks, “Would you mind?” Jarrod replies, “Not at all, be back in a couple of minutes,” then getting up he exits the room leaving just Victoria at the table with her morning coffee.

As Nick and Heath are walking up, Duke says goodmorning to them and has the wagon ready to go.

“Duke,” Nick then says, “I stopped by the bunkhouse last night.” Duke replies, “Yes, Mike told me.” Nick asks, “What is it you wanted to talk to me about?” Duke answers, “I will talk to you later. Will you be around?” Nick answers, “Other than doing rounds I will be here all day.”

“Catch up with you then,” Duke tells him and after instructing Heath to hop up, Heath responds, “Yes um,” and climbs into the driver’s box.

Nick then informs him about Jarrod coming by at 10 to take Heath into town to pick up a new suit and then after bidding one another a good day Duke heads out towards the creek while Nick goes to get Coco saddled up. Reaching the creek, Duke has Heath joining the men already at work while he takes care of the wagon. At the house Jarrod keeping his word helps out in the kitchen and Victoria has him making cakes while Silas works on the corn chips and she works on the bread.

Reaching the West Ridge Nick checks in with the men Mike and Hank who are on watch and asks, “How’s it going?” Hank replies “So far so good Mr. Barkley.” Nick asks, “Has anything gotten out?” Hank answers, “Not so far.” Nick then says, “That is what I want to hear, carry on,” and quickly rides off.

At the creek the men continue working hard getting the bridge erected. After Nick finishes with his rounds he hands Coco over to Ciego and returns to the house. Upon walking in the front door with spurs on his feet and a loud slam, “Nick,” Victoria calls out, “We’re in here. Come join us.”

Entering the kitchen, “How did you know it was me?” Nick inquires.

Smiling, “Who else would make such a grand entrance each time he walks in?” Jarrod quips “Are you ready to give us a hand?” Nick replies, “Yes, I am ready.”

“Good,” Victoria says, “You could help us with baking the cakes,” as she puts the chicken in the oven she has Nick washing his hands before he gets started. And while Jarrod is working on making a carrot cake batter he asks of Nick, “So how was it out there Brother Nick? Did the ranch collapse at all while you were out there checking on it?”

Drying his hands, “Very funny,” Nick retorts and as he is rolling up his sleeves and gets out a bowl he is encouraged to make a yellow cake mix. As he is grabbing the flour he asks, “Just how many things are we making for this thing anyhow?”

“Quite a bit,” Victoria mentions. Nick then asks, “Do we have that many people coming?” Victoria answers, “One could never know Nick, but I rather play it safe and have more than not enough.”

Nick replies, “I suppose.”

While Silas is making the corn chips, Jarrod asks of Nick, “Were you able to talk to Duke?” Nick replies, “No, he said we will talk later.” Victoria then says, “Did you find out who will be available for tomorrow to give us a hand?” Nick replies, “Not yet, but as soon as I do, I will let you know.”

“Well alright” Victoria says. Placing his batter into the oven and notices the time Jarrod excuses himself from the kitchen. Victoria tells him “Have a good time.”

Jarrod replies, “I hope to. But it all depends on the newest Barkley member” noticing a leery look from Nick he then says “Nick, don’t give me that look. Whether you like it or not he is the newest member of the family so get use to it.”

As he walks out, “Nick really,” Victoria replies, “You should lighten up.”

“Mother,” Nick says, “Please don’t start.”

“Very well,” Victoria replies, “I just hope you will be on your best behavior tomorrow both in town and here. You may not approve of Heath, but he is here and I don’t want you to make his first real day out with all of us to be anything less than warm. You got that?”

“Mother,” Nick vows, “I won’t do anything.” Victoria replies “Good!” removing one loaf of bread from the oven and Nick is working on another cake.

Outside once Jarrod has the wagon hitched up he climbs into the driver’s box and heads out towards the creek. Catching sight of him coming, “Hey look,” Bobby calls out, “Here comes Mr. Barkley.” Heath watching as he gets closer Duke says, “Boy is it ten already? Where does the time go?” Johnny replies, “Beats me.”

Bringing the wagon to a full stop and after exchanging hellos with Duke, Bobby and Heath, Jarrod asks of Heath, “Are you ready to go?” Replying, “I am sir,” Jarrod tells him to climb in and after responding, “Yes sir,” Heath climbs up.

Watching as Jarrod drives away from the creek, Bobby asks “Duke, Heath is their brother?” Duke replies “He is.” Bobby then says “Didn’t know that, I mean I heard the rumors to it but I didn’t know it to be true.” Duke replies “Well it is.” Bobby then asks “How come Nick isn’t like Jarrod when it comes to him?” Duke explains “Nick has a problem accepting Heath at the moment but given time he will.”

“I’ve noticed something,” Bobby says. Duke asks, “What’s that?” Bobby mentions, “He calls you by your name, but he addresses both Jarrod and Nick by sir.” Duke says, “I’ve noticed that too.” Bobby inquires, “Why is that do you think?” Duke says, “Not sure, but once I talk with Nick I will see what I could do on that, let’s get back to work.” Replying, “Right,” Bobby resumes working.

At the house while Silas is working on the roast and the pastries Nick is baking the cakes and Victoria continues working with the loaves of bread and the egg salad. Nick then says, “Mother I was thinking what happens if we make too much and don’t get that many visitors?”

“If we have anything left,” Victoria replies, “We will just have plenty of leftovers until it all goes,” with Silas mentioning, “It will make great lunches.” Victoria says, “That it will,” with Nick retorting, “Terrific.”

While driving Jarrod tries getting Heath to talk by asking him questions about Strawberry, his knowledge of building bridges, how he likes traveling with him to Stockton and each time Heath would answer, “Fine sir,” or, “Yes sir.”

Trying a different approach Jarrod then asks, “Heath, do you have any likes?” Listening Heath mimics, “Likes?” Jarrod replies, “Yes. Things you like. Everyone has likes and dislikes and was wondering what kinds do you have.” Shrugging his shoulders, “Don’t know sir.”

Exhaling deeply, “Heath,” Jarrod then says, “I wish you would open up and talk to me. I won’t hurt you all I am simply trying to do is learn about you a little is all,” as he watches as Heath doesn’t respond and just looks at the various scenery they are passing by, “Heath, I am not Nick who does a lot of yelling. Why don’t you give me a chance? Is there something about us that bothers you?”

As Heath replies, “No sir,” he just looks at the various scenery they continue to ride past in silence.

Trying of a different approach “Heath” Jarrod asks “Have you ever thought about what you wanted to be once you got to be an adult?” Heath replies, “No sir.”

“I know you didn’t have much schooling,” Jarrod notes, “But I always knew that I wanted to be a lawyer, Nick always wanted to run the ranch and both Gene and Audra are still a little young yet to really know what they want to be or do although I suspect that Audra would just be happy being a wife and mother someday and taking care of a lot of needy children and little animals. So,” he asks of him, “What did you think about growing up about what you wanted to be?”

“Not thought about it,” Heath answers. Jarrod asks, “How come?” Heath replies, “Just didn’t.” Jarrod then says, “But Heath, everyone when they are young has dreams of something they want to do or who they want to be when they grow up. I am sure you must’ve done that too.” Heath answers, “I did sir.”

“Talk to me Heath,” Jarrod says, “What did you think about when you were growing up? What did you want to be or what did you want to do?”

“Wished it was different,” Heath answers, “Wanted out of Strawberry, wanted make money, take Mama out of there but,” looking away, “It didn’t go the way I had in mind.” Jarrod says, “You did leave Strawberry and seeing you are here now you will be making money. Lots of it; just give it some time.”

“It’s not the same,” Heath states while still staring down at the ground.

“I know,” Jarrod replies, “Your Mama isn’t here with you right?” Watching Heath nod his head, “Well Heath,” Jarrod continues, “I do know how you feel because Father isn’t here anymore so I do know some of how you feel about losing your Mama, because it bothers me that Father is gone,” placing his hand on his back, “It’s okay, to feel the way you do” soothing him, “And I realize that it must be worse for you because she was about all you had. I, at least have each of our brothers and sister and I still have Mother.”

“I have Aunt Rachel,” Heath points out, “And Hannah.” Jarrod replies, “That is true too.”

Riding along in another bout of silence Jarrod thinks of what else to ask him says, “When your mama was around and you were real small, did you ever think about leaving Strawberry to come here and see Father?”

“Once,” Heath answers, “She left with me. Don’t know if it was to come here to see father or not.” Jarrod asks, “What happened?” Heath answers, “Uncle.”

Jarrod asks, “What happened?” Heath answers, “He came, took me, left her where she was.” Jarrod says, “And then what?” Heath replies “Took me and left her there.” Jarrod asks, “Why?” Heath replies, “Didn’t want her to leave, didn’t want me to leave.” Jarrod asks, “How come?”

Shrugging his shoulders “Don’t know sir” Heath replies “Just the way it was, we didn’t leave.” Jarrod asks “Then what?” Heath replies “Not know, never knew.”

“Doesn’t sound like he was too nice to you or your mama,” Jarrod mentions. Heath replies, “He wasn’t,” as he looks away again while riding along in silence for a few more seconds. Jarrod then asks, “Is there one job you did that you liked doing better than another?” Heath replies, “Ranching; horses…”

“You like working with horses?” Jarrod asks. Heath replies, “I do yes.” Jarrod then asks, “Do you know how to break them in?” Heath answers, “I do sir.” Jarrod says, “I’d like to see you with them, see how well you are with them.” Heath says, “Yes sir.” Jarrod then mentions, “I will have a talk with Nick.”

Replying, “Yes sir,” Heath rides in silence again as they take in another bout of scenery they are approaching, “You know this is your first time out to Stockton since you arrived?” Jarrod brings up. Heath replies, “It is sir.” Jarrod then asks, “What do you think the difference is of coming from a town like Strawberry to a town like Stockton?” Heath replies “More people, more buildings.”

“I imagine there are,” Jarrod then says, “Did you know that once I went with Father to Strawberry?” Heath replies, “No sir.” Jarrod mentions, “I was very young and I don’t remember it too well but just remember going there and seeing quite a few buildings. And after today, you will be seeing a lot more of Stockton tomorrow and you could meet some of the local townspeople that will be attending and even though it’s not under the best of circumstances, at least it will be a start.” Heath says, “Yes sir.”

Arriving in Stockton Jarrod brings the wagon to a stop outside of the Roadside Market and has Heath go with him inside the store. Walking in Heath notices the different fruits and vegetables all neatly placed in various baskets and bushels. The man behind the counter, Hal, after exchanging hellos with Jarrod says “I’ll be right with you.” Jarrod replies “Take your time; we’ll just be looking around.”

Walking around Jarrod notices Heath standing in the doorway and after calling to him to go with him Heath promptly obeys. While they browse Hal tends to his current customer, Mrs. Culhane who he assists out to her buggy carrying a five pound bag of sugar and a small bag of mints. Grabbing a bag of flour Jarrod has Heath placing it on the counter.

Placing Mrs. Culhane’s purchases into the back they exchange good days and just prior to her driving off they discuss the services briefly that will be held on Saturday for Sheriff Harry Anderson and Frank Sempleworth.

Going back inside Hal greets Heath standing there near the counter who politely answers. Hal then asks, “Are you new around here?” Heath replies, “Yes sir.” Hal then inquires, “Did you come for the services tomorrow?”

“He came for more than that,” Jarrod joining in says, “He is living with us.”

“I see,” Hal replies and upon studying his face, “And there is a look to him like I’ve seen it before but can’t place the where.” He then asks of Heath, “Have you ever been in these parts before?” Heath replies, “No sir just came here.”

“You do look mighty familiar I could tell you that,” Hal then says changing the subject, “So what could I get for you fellas?”

Jarrod informs him they just came in for the bag of flour and asks him to place a bushel of canteloupe, honeydew along with 5 big watermelons into the back of the wagon as well as any bags of grain for Nick. Upon Hal responding, “No problem,” he then asks, “Do you want me to add them to your bill?”

Responding, “Please,” Jarrod then informs him they will be back for them and then calling to Heath, they leave the store and head down the street in search of what they need in way of a new outfit for Heath.

At the house while Nick is working on the cakes he is baking Victoria advises him to frost them once they are cooled, Silas is carving the turkey.

Reaching Ray and Madeline’s Tailor Shop Jarrod makes that their first stop and going inside he is greeted by Madeline who in turn returns the greeting while at the same time introduces Heath to her she says, “Aren’t you a cute fellow? Did you just come to town; never seen you around here before.”

“He is new, yes,” Jarrod answers for him, “He is new with us.”

Madeline then asks what she could do for them in which Jarrod tells her about the new suit Heath needs for the services. As she goes to see what would look good on him, she brings up, “That was a rotten shame of what happened to those poor dears; just so terrible.”

“I have to agree,” Jarrod replies as Madeline comes out with a dark navy suit that consists of a pair of trousers, a matching vest and blazer. Looking it over, “Looks fine,” Jarrod says, “Heath,” glancing over at him who replies, “Fine.”

“Would you like to try it on,” Madeline suggests. Jarrod replies, “That would be a wonderful idea. We do need to see if it fits right.”

“Come with me dear,” Madeline says, “Oh,” thinking, “You’re going to need a new shirt with that,” retrieving a blue long sleeve shirt, “Here you are,” showing him she asks, “What you think?” Looking at it quickly, “Fine Ma’am,” Heath replies.

“It will go well,” Jarrod states, “And it matches very nicely.” Showing Heath to the dressing room Madeline has him try on the new suit while they wait for him.

“He seems a little nervous Jarrod,” Madeline mentions with Jarrod noting, “I think it’s just his being new with us.” Madeline replies “Could be.”

“Whatever the cost please place it on our account,” Jarrod informs her. She then inquires, “Is he staying with you?” Jarrod answers, “He is yes.”

“He seems to be a very nice young man,” Madeline comments with Jarrod replying, “He is.”

Coming out of the dressing room Heath models the outfit for both Madeline and Jarrod who both look him over thoroughly with them touching the material making sure it fits and feels right. Realizing something missing Jarrod asks for Madeline for a tie in which she graciously retrieves for him which happens to be a navy colored bowtie. Attaching it to the shirt “How’s it look” Madeline inquires.

“Very nice,” Jarrod replies, “We’ll take it.” After changing back into his clothes Heath brings the new ones out to be wrapped and then he and Jarrod exit the store and going to their next stop they come to the Shoe and Leather store.

Entering the store they are greeted by a man from the backroom who hears the bell as the door opens and calls out, “Be right with you,” seconds before appearing in the doorway, “Well hello Jarrod,” holding his hand out, “What could I do for you?” the man asks.

Taking the hand, “Hello Connor,” Jarrod replies, “This here is Heath.”

Innocently studying him Connor says “Hello Heath” holding his hand out to him who takes it and replies “Hello sir,” shaking it. Connor says, “Never seen you around here before.”

“This is his first time here,” Jarrod announces, “He’s living with us.” Being taken back, “Living with you?” Connor asks. Jarrod replies, “Yes; we’re in need of a pair of shoes and a pair of dark navy socks.”

Showing them the rack with the socks on it, “What kind of shoes are you looking for?” he asks of Heath who replies, “Don’t know sir.”

Connor suggests they look around, Jarrod replies, “That’s a splendid idea,” and going over to the shoe rack Jarrod helps Heath with picking out a black colored pair with matching laces. Not knowing what size foot he has Jarrod has him trying on different sizes until he finds one that fits.

Finding the third pair he tries on feeling better Jarrod has him walking up and down the aisle testing them out and after a couple times of being asked how they feel and answering, “Feels okay,” Jarrod decides to take the pair and having Heath put his boots back on Jarrod brings the new shoes as well as a pair of navy blue socks he grabs from a nearby rack to the counter.

Connor asks, “Did you find what you were looking for?”

Jarrod answers, “We did. We’ll take this pair and the socks.” Glancing over at Heath, “That will be $4.25,” Connor tells him to which Jarrod informs him to add them to the bill.

Connor then asks, “You’re paying for them?” Jarrod replies, “Yes.”

“Very well,” Connor then inquires, “Anything else?” Jarrod replies “No thank you, have a good day, Connor. Give my regards to your wife.”

Responding, “I will,” Connor tells them as they are heading out the door, “Come back again sometime Heath.” As Heath replies, “Thank you sir,” Connor returns to the back room.

Walking in the doorway, “Who was that Connor?” his wife asks of him.

“Oh Jarrod,” Connor informs her, “And someone named Heath who is living with them,” returning to the table.

“I didn’t know there was anyone living with the Barkleys,” the woman says, “Victoria never mentioned it.”

“Alice,” Connor replies, “He just arrived and probably just came for the services tomorrow, he came in for a pair of shoes and socks.”

Finishing their lunch, “That’s possible,” Alice says.

Going down the street Jarrod finishes the last of his errands and upon reaching the post office, “How do you like the day so far?” Jarrod asks of Heath who answers, “Fine sir.” Jarrod then mentions, “Everyone here is pretty nice, I don’t think it will be long before you start fitting in with the rest of us.” Once again Heath replies, “Yes sir.”

Going inside the post office Jarrod leaves Heath outside and after retrieving the mail he goes to check on any wires that might’ve come in. Coming back out, “No wires,” Jarrod informs Heath, “Now onto my office and then we will have some lunch, okay?” Replying, “Yes sir,” Heath continues following him down the street.

Reaching his office Jarrod brings Heath inside and after greeting his secretary Miss Haas who asks, “Who is this with you?” Jarrod replies, “This is Heath,” placing his hand on his back,” introducing him to her in which she says hello to him who in turn removes his hat as he replies, “Howdy Ma’am.”

Jarrod then asks, “Did anything come in for me?” Handing him the mail, “Just these,” she mentions. Taking them from her he thanks her and then excusing himself he has Heath going with him into his private office and upon closing the door asks of Heath, “How do you like it?”

Taking it all in from where he’s standing, “Nice sir,” Heath answers while remaining where he is and holding his hat in his hands. Taking out a bottle of whiskey Jarrod pours two glasses handing one to Heath and taking the other for himself. Taking it from him Heath politely thanks him.

As Jarrod is sipping his he notices Heath not touching his and tells him, “Try it. It’s from a good year.” Replying, “Yes sir,” Heath begins drinking it.

“Heath” Jarrod then says “I thought you could freshen up before we go head down to the restaurant. Come with me” escorting him to his private bathroom “I’ll be out here waiting” he tells him. Replying “Yes sir” Heath closes the door behind him while Jarrod checks over his mail and finishes his drink. Minutes later after coming out they leave the office and on the way out they exchange goodbyes with Miss Haas and head down the street.

Reaching the restaurant “Here we are” Jarrod announces looking up at the sign “The Cattleman’s Club. Let’s go in” doing as instructed Heath follows Jarrod in.

Being greeted by the hostess “Table for two?” she asks with Jarrod replying “Please.” Escorting them to a table she then walks away. Upon taking their seats the waitress with long brown hair in a pony tail and bangs in front comes and introduces herself as Cody. After greeting them she hands them each a menu and then walks away. As Jarrod is looking at his menu “Do you know what you want?” he asks of Heath who replies “No sir” as he keeps his eyes peeled to the menu.

Offering to do the ordering Jarrod tells the waitress they’ll have two of the special consisting of 2 t-bone steaks, medium to well cooked, onion rings, broccoli soup, a salad with vinegar and oil and coffee. Taking the menus Cody walks away. Jarrod then asks of Heath, “How do you like it?” Heath replies, “Fine sir.”

Once again making small talk Jarrod tells Heath “It’s different having someone waiting on you instead of waiting on yourself.” Heath replies “It is.” Jarrod then says “And seeing this is your first time here, I could say you’re in for a treat.”

Bringing them their coffees Cody informs them their meals will be up momentarily and as she walks away they start on their coffees. Putting his elbows on the table, “You know Heath,” Jarrod then says, “I’ve noticed that whatever you put your mind to doing you seem to do well. Have you always been like that?” Shrugging his shoulders, “Don’t know sir” Heath mentions.

“You designed the bridge really good,” Jarrod points out, “You’re fighting with us against the railroad you did quite well. And you really know how to use a rifle, huh?” As Heath responds, “Yes sir,” Cody returns with their soup and salad. Jarrod then informs Heath, “Let me know how you like the soup.” Replying, “Yes sir,” Heath tries a little of the soup and then tells him, “Fine sir.” Jarrod asks, “Do you like broccoli soup?” Once again Heath replies, “Yes sir.”

Realizing the soup is too hot Jarrod tells Heath, “Why don’t you blow on it? Mother would always do that to us when something was hot.” Heath mentions, “Mama did that to me too.” Jarrod asks, “She did?” Heath replies, “She did.”

Jarrod surmises “Must be something all mothers tell their children.” Replying “Don’t know sir,” Heath blows on the steam. Jarrod then suggests “How about we putting it aside and start on the salad?” in which Heath follows his lead and upon replying, “Yes sir,” starts eating his salad.

“At least,” Jarrod states, “It doesn’t need to be cooled off.” Replying, “True,” Heath continues eating. After they finish their salad they return to their soup which has now cooled off. Jarrod then says, “Much better, don’t you think?”

“Yes sir,” Heath answers, “Not as hot.” Finishing their soup Cody comes by with the main course asking, “Will there be anything else?”

Jarrod replies, “No, not right now, thank you,” and as she walks away she takes away some of the finished dishes. Heath once again waits for Jarrod to tell him he could start in which he then picks up his knife and begins cutting up his steak.

Making small talk again Jarrod asks how he likes the steak and onion rings. Upon finishing their meal Cody returns with the coffee pot and then the ice cream that comes with the meal. After they’ve finished Jarrod pays the bill and they leave the restaurant with Heath carrying the shoe box he has with him.

Back at the house while Nick is frosting one of the cakes he wonders how many more cakes they will need. Thinking Victoria suggests he do one more making it chocolate.

Leaving the restaurant Jarrod and Heath go back to Ray and Madeline’s Taylor Shop to pick up his new suit then make their way back to the Roadside Market to retrieve the wagon parked outside loaded up and ready for their trip back. After informing Hal they’ve returned Jarrod joins Heath out in the driver’s box and upon grabbing the reins asks, “Heath, would you like to drive back?”

Heath replies, “If you like sir.” Jarrod says, “I like; go ahead.”

As Jarrod hands the reins to Heath, Heath takes them and begins steering the wagon away from the market and going down the street heads for the road leading back to the ranch. While taking in the scenery along the way Jarrod says, “Well Heath how did you like your first day in town?” Heath replies, “Fine sir.”

“This is just the first of many,” Jarrod notes, “There will be plenty more opportunities after this one and you’ll be learning it like the back of your hand before you know it.”

Heath replies, “Yes sir.”

Jarrod then asks of him “How did you like the clothes and shoes we picked out?” Heath answers “Fine sir.” Not thinking of anything else to talk about they continue riding in silence. As they continue towards the ranch Jarrod begins noticing Heath’s hands tightening up on the reins and curiously asks “Heath, are you alright?” Heath answers again “Fine sir.” Jarrod says “You sure?” Heath responds “I’m sure.”

Raising an eyebrow but not pressing the issue Jarrod just shrugs it off and quietly observes him becoming increasingly tense as they get closer to the gate.

Back at the house coming home from school Audra and Gene find Victoria in the kitchen working on the pastries and upon walking in they exchange hellos with her. After asking them how school went and if they had any homework in which Audra informs her she finished her but Gene mentioning he could do his later in which she agrees to let him do it on Sunday rather than Saturday seeing they will be too busy with everything. She then has them changing out of their school clothes and returning to help with the baking. Going up the stairs they are greeted by Silas who has just walked back in.

Reaching the ranch and pulling up in front of the house Jarrod has Heath taking his packages into the house and tells him to tell Gene and Nick to both come out to help with bringing the rest of the items from the wagon inside and if he should see Silas to have him come out too. Replying “Yes sir” Heath obediently complies. And taking his packages inside he is greeted by Silas who is in the front room. Heath then says “Excuse me, Silas, sir.” Silas replies, “Yes Mr. Heath?”

“Jarrod” Heath says “Would like you to come out.” Replying “On my way” Silas goes out the door. Coming in from the kitchen Victoria asks Heath how everything went.” Heath replies “It went fine um, Ma’am.” Victoria then says “Where’s Jarrod?” Heath replies “Outside.” Victoria then asks “Did you get the new suit?” Replying “Right here, Ma’am” he shows her.

“I’d like to take a look at them” Victoria informs him “But for now how about taking them upstairs and put them on your bed and come back down?” Replying “Yes um” Heath quickly goes up the stairs places the boxes on his bed and comes back down the stairs. Observing him “My” Victoria says “That was fast.”

“Yes um,” Heath replies. She then instructs him, “Come with me.” Once again replying, “Yes um,” Heath follows her into the kitchen.

Noticing both Audra and Gene working on the tarts Heath then says, “Um, excuse me,” to Victoria who replies, “Yes Heath?” Heath then says, “Um, Jarrod is outside and,” swallowing hard, “Asked me to tell um, Gene, to go outside and help bring the stuff in.”

“Go ahead Gene,” Victoria says. Replying, “Yes Mother,” Gene stops what he’s doing and after wiping his hands on a nearby towel goes outside. After informing Heath to assist Audra with making the tarts Victoria walks out. While being alone in the kitchen with Heath Audra has him taking a seat and following her instructions of how to put the tarts onto the baking sheet.

Trying to make conversation she asks, “Heath, are you okay?” Heath replies, “Yes Ma’am.” Audra inquires, “Why are you so quiet all the time?” Shrugging his shoulders, “Just way it is Ma’am,” he answers.

“I remember that first day you came here you had a whole lot more to say than you do now. You had more fight,” Audra asks, “What happened?”

Heath replies, “Nothing Ma’am.” Audra asks again, “Then why are you so quiet all the time? Does Nick yelling and talking harshly to you have anything to do with it?” Heath answers, “No Ma’am, it’s the way I am to be.” Audra says, “The way you are to be? Heath replies, “Yes Ma’am.”

“I don’t follow,” Audra asks, “Because of the way you’re to be? You’re Heath and if our father is your father then that makes you Heath Barkley, right?”

“No,” Heath states, “I am bastard Ma’am; Heath Thomson.”

“Heath” Audra says “You’re not a bastard. Our father is your father right?” Heath admits, “He is.” Audra then tells him, “Then you are a Barkley just the same as I am,” as she tries placing her hand over his he moves it quickly and then she asks as he is looking away, “Heath, what’s the matter? I am your sister but I would like to be your friend. Would you like to be mine?” Heath replies, “Yes um.”

“Then as a friend,” Audra insists, “Talk to me. Tell me what is bothering you.” Heath replies, “Don’t know. Not use to all this.” Audra asks, “What? The house? Us?” Heath replies, “Yes Ma’am.”

“I remember you mentioning you had a one room with your mama” Audra brings up. Heath replies “I did.” Audra then says “And there was just you, your mama, Aunt Rachel, Hannah, Uncle Matt and Aunt Martha.” Heath replies “Yes Ma’am.”

Heath then turns completely silent as Gene walks in with Silas, Mike and Hank carrying the bushels of fruit and bags of flour with Audra observing.

Victoria then walks in and after telling Mike and Hank thank you they leave the items on the counter and walk out. She then asks of Audra and Heath, “How you two doing?” Audra answers, “Fine Mother.”

“Look at what time it is,” Victoria mentions, “We better get dinner started,” glancing over at Gene she tells him to assist Audra and Heath with the tarts while she and Silas work on getting dinner ready.

Outside meeting up at the wagon and after calling out to the other, “Jarrod,” Nick asks, “Where are the sacks of grain I asked you to get?”

Showing him, “This was all I was able to pick up,” Jarrod informs him, “Sorry.”

“THIS IS IT?” Nick barks, “FOR CRYING OUT LOUD JARROD, I need more than this. These couple of bags won’t last the week.”

“Well I am sorry Nick,” Jarrod replies, “But the wagon was full of what Mother needed and that was far more important right now. She needed them for today. You could always pick up what you need on Monday.”

“Well now,” exhaling deeply, “I don’t see where I have much of a choice,” Nick says, “Now do I? I guess when you want something done and want it done right you just have to do it yourself.”

“I suppose you’re right,” Jarrod then excuses himself and as he is about to take care of the wagon Nick tells him, “I’ll take care of it Jarrod, you go inside.”

“You sure,” Jarrod asks, “I could do it.” Nick reminds him, “Your arm is still a little incapacitated. I’ll take care of it, go on.” While Jarrod goes inside Nick tends to the wagon and the sacks of grain.

Walking in the front door Jarrod is asked, “How did it go?” Jarrod replies “Went alright.” Victoria then asks, “How did it go with Heath?” Jarrod answers, “Not too bad. We managed to pick up what was needed and he did open up some, perhaps a small nibble but that was it.” Victoria says, “Well that’s a start. What color’s the suit?” Jarrod mentions, “Navy, with a blue shirt and black shoes.”

“Splendid,” Victoria replies, “They should look nice on him.” Jarrod says, “They will. I had him try them on and they fit very nicely.”

“That’s great,” Victoria replies, “And thank you for doing it.”

“My pleasure,” Jarrod says, “I kind of enjoyed doing it. But you know I noticed something peculiar about Heath.” Victoria replies, “Ho, what’s that Jarrod?”

“It may have just been me,” Jarrod notes, “But I swear he seemed to be more at ease going into town than on the way home.” Victoria ponders, “I wonder why?” Jarrod says, “I’ll give you two guesses.” Answering without hesitation, “Nick,” Victoria blurts out. Jarrod says, “That is my guess. For some reason Heath is bothered by Nick. Maybe it’s the way he talks to him or just looks at him,” raising an eyebrow, “I don’t know. But that is my assumption.”

“And a pretty good one at that,” Victoria notes, “But we do have to let Nick come to terms with it on his own.” Replying, “I know,” Jarrod then excuses himself and while he goes up the stairs Victoria returns to the kitchen.

While Nick unhitches the wagon in the barn Duke strolls in and calls out, “Nick! Are you ready to talk now?” Replying, “I guess so,” Nick says, “I know we haven’t had many opportunities to do so until now. Sorry about that,” as he continues working, “Oh,” he then asks, “Could you find out who’s available for tomorrow? That doesn’t have any plans and isn’t attending the services? I need to know.”

“I’ll check around,” Duke replies. Nick tells him, “See who could stick around for the day and help out. If we don’t need them for too long they could leave early. Tell them it will be extra money.” Duke informs him, “I’ll do that.”

Nick replies, “Okay.” Duke then tells him, “I made out the weekend schedule for the West Ridge.” Nick replies, “Good.” Duke mentions, “I am one short.”

“What do you mean?” Nick wanted to know. Duke says, “I have Barrett on the schedule for 3 to 11 but don’t have anyone available to work with him.”

“Put Heath on the schedule,” Nick answers quickly, “He could work with Barrett.”

“That may not be a good idea Nick,” Duke mentions, “Barrett isn’t too fond when it comes to Heath and Heath is still new here.” Nick says, “So what?” angrily he adds, “It may be good for him and it may be good for both of them. Heath needs to be able to work with everyone and that includes Barrett. Put him on with him.”

Sighing, “Very well,” Duke replies. Nick then says, “So what is it you want to talk to me about? I know you’ve been trying for the past couple of days.” Duke mentions, “Two issues.” Nick asks, “What are they?” Duke answers, “One the men; you have to stop being so abrupt with them.”

“Abrupt?” Nick snaps, “I haven’t been abrupt. I am the boss here. They have to mind me.”

“They know that Nick,” Duke disputes, “But you have been. They don’t know how to act around you. They think if they say the wrong thing, you’ll send them packing.” “I won’t do that,” Nick says, “Not unless they give me good reason to.”

“Then ease up on them,” Duke insists, “Don’t be so abrupt with them. You have a good crew here and I wouldn’t want any of them leaving because they got fed up with the harsh treatment you’ve been giving them. I also think there just might be another reason for the sudden outburst that you need to ease off of as well and you may not even be aware of it.”

“Oh?” Nick asks, “What’s that?” Duke tells him, “Heath.” Exhaling deeply, “You too,” Nick then inquires, “What about him?”

“I think he is the reason,” Duke speculates, “Why you are acting this way. I mean you’re father being gone took a toll on you I know that but since Heath’s arrival you seemed to have changed drastically. I mean to the point where it’s noticeable. The men have seen it and I’ve seen it and you keep avoiding me. But,” sighing, “You should really get to know him. I have and he is a very nice young man. Even some of the men working here like his being here. Why don’t you see that? What is it about him that bothers you?”

Sighing heavily, “I don’t know Duke,” Nick confides, “I keep thinking about that myself. Maybe it’s his quietness.” Duke inquires, “Quietness? Have you really sat down and talked with him yet?” Nick replies, “I’ve tried.” Duke says, “I don’t think you’ve tried hard enough.” Nick sternly asks, “What is that suppose to mean?” Duke replies, “Because! You talk harshly towards him; you’re not really talking to him.” Nick asks, “He told you that?”

“Not in the same wording,” Duke mentions, “In a roundabout way he has and both your mother and Jarrod have tried talking to you about him but you won’t listen to either of them that is why I am trying now. I’ve known you since way before you were born.” Nick replies, “I know that.”

“Then,” Duke says, “I don’t know why you are so cold towards him and keep distancing yourself away from him. You really do need to sit down with him.”

“I will” Nick says “It’s just I am not ready to yet.” Duke asks “Could I ask what has he done to you?” Nick states “Nothing.” Duke says “They sit with him; try getting to know him.” Nick informs him “I will.” Duke points out “I like his being here.”

“I know that too,” Nick replies, “And so does the rest of the family.” Duke asks, “Could I ask why you don’t?”

“I didn’t say I didn’t like his being here” Nick reiterates “I just said I am being careful with him. I have to be sure before I choose to accept him. If I find out he is here to cause us any kind of trouble I want to be ready to act and get him out of here.” Duke says “Nick, you are mistaken.” Nick asks “How could you be so sure?”

“I worked with him,” Duke mentions, “For the past couple of days, I had talks with him. You really need to do that. You need to work alongside of him and talk with him and then you will see what I see.” Nick says again, “I will.”

“Yes I know,” Duke comments “Just not yet, right?” Walking away, Nick tells him he has to be going. Duke says, “You hate it when you are wrong.” Nick replies, “Excuse me Duke,” continuing to walk away. Duke calls out, “Where you going?” Nick replies, “Have things to take care of,” and continues going.

Keeping up with him, “That boy,” Duke says, “Has a lot to say if you will listen to him.” Nick asks, “Like what?” Duke brings up, “His uncle for what. He doesn’t like him at all and he doesn’t like Strawberry.”

“That I know,” Nick says, “Have you ever thought that whatever he said could be a pack of lies?” Have you even considered that?”

Duke replies, “No, it’s not. But then again you haven’t sat with him. I think when you do you will sing a different tune.” Nick retorts, “Maybe.”

“Nick,” Duke then says, “How come he refers to you and Jarrod as sir? How come he isn’t calling you by your names?”

Shrugging his shoulders, “How should I know?” Nick answers.

“He calls me by my name,” Duke mentions “Don’t you think you should sit down with him and find out why that is?” Nick replies, “I will,” walking away more, “Good day Duke.”

Shaking his head and stopping, watching Nick go, “Tom,” Duke then says, “That boy of yours is as stubborn as they come.”

At the house after everyone finishes dinner they go into the kitchen and begin pitching in with Saturday’s preparations. While the men carve the meats, everyone else fixes them on the bread slicing them triangular. Pleased at how well everyone is working, “There,” Victoria comments, “This is what I like to see; the entire family pitching in and working side by side.” Silas replies, “It is different, I must admit.”

“I am enjoying this,” comes from Audra with, “I have to agree,” coming from Eugene who adds, “It’s been some time since we all were doing something like this together in the same room.”

“Well,” Jarrod says, “You know us Barkleys. When we put our minds to work,” glancing over at an eerily quiet Nick, “We can really work together and get things done.”

“You’re right” Victoria remarks also observing Nick. She then asks, “Heath, how you doing?” Heath answers, “Fine,” as he continues slicing.

Glancing over at Nick, “What about you Brother Nick,” Jarrod says, “Are you enjoying this too or does the cat have your tongue tonight?” Exhaling heavily, “Jarrod,” Nick barks sternly, “Don’t bother me,” as he continues working. Jarrod replies, “As you wish.” Audra then says, “I just thought of a family motto.”

“What’s that dear?” Victoria asks of her who replies “The family that plays together stays together.” Jarrod says “I like that” with Victoria replying “So do I.”

Upon finishing and noting the time Jarrod excuses himself and as he is going towards the door Gene asks if he’d like to have some company. Jarrod replies, “No, not this time,” and walks out.

Getting Jingo saddled up Jarrod rides around going up the road and finding himself stopping at his father’s grave.

Dismounting, Jarrod walks over to the headstone, kneels down and says, “Father, did you know you have another son? His name is Heath. He came to us on Monday night. None of us sees the resemblance except Mother,” exhaling deeply. “Father,” he continues, “I have a confession to make. I know I’ve accepted him, but for some reason when I took him into town today I couldn’t bring myself to tell anyone that he was my brother. All I said was that he lived here with us. I feel bad about it because I do know he is your son and he is our brother and that he is a very nice young man who is quiet and just doesn’t know how to feel comfortable around all of us. I just didn’t know how to tell the people that he was my brother.”

“I don’t avoid him,” he says, “Like Nick is doing and the family does like his being here, including Mother and Duke. But at the moment Nick is having a hard time adjusting to it. I know you left him to run the ranch and watch over the family but I think he is taking it just a little bit too extreme. He won’t let his guard down; he won’t sit and talk with him or try getting to know him. I think if he did, he just might see him differently, but the first step is getting him to see that.”

“Today,” he adds, “While taking Heath into town, I noticed that he seemed to be more at ease going into town than on the way back. He was holding the reins like they depended on it. Now I think he is okay but I guess maybe the initial shock still hasn’t wore off as of yet. I think,” (pause) “I still have to get over it,” sighing, “I am also having him investigated Father, to know a little more about him. That should tell us something more than what he’s telling us.”

“I wish,” sighing again, “I knew what it would take for him to open up and talk. He says very little as it is and only if we ask him something. He’s not like Nick at all who speaks up. Maybe being so isolated in Strawberry has something to do with his quietness. I wonder just how bad the townspeople there were to him; he won’t say. He did mention having an uncle that took him away from his mother when they tried leaving there. What kind of uncle would do that to his own nephew and sister? You would think he’d be there to support them,” Jarrod then says, “That could explain some of why Heath hates him so much, but only Heath knows the answer and at the moment won’t tell us too much.”

“Do you know Father,” he continues, “That he has blond hair just like Audra? I bet you would be overjoyed if you knew you had another son and Mother thinks he looks like a much younger Uncle Jim. We are now waiting for him to send us a picture of himself of when he was younger so we could see.”

“Perhaps maybe,” he notes, “It’s just that you passed away too quickly, too soon, which could be why Nick hasn’t really accepted him as of yet. I mean it has only been six months since you’ve been gone father. I’m still dealing with it, Mother is still dealing with it and so are Gene and Audra, so I don’t see Nick being any different. But being the oldest doesn’t allow me to be like Nick at all. I have an obligation to this family, just like he does, so I do have to do what is right and what I think is right whether I agree with it or not. Now I think Heath being here is a good thing, I think he will be a great asset to us all, we just have to wait and see how it all goes down but right now,” exhaling again, “We just have to get Nick to see it,” as he starts getting up.

Thinking of something more, “Oh,” he says kneeling back down, “Tomorrow we will be attending two services; one for Frank Sempleworth the other for Harry who both died on Tuesday while trying to defend Frank’s home against the town and the people from the railroad. Saturday, is going to be a rough day. I could feel it. I just have to continue to stay strong just in case the rest of the family isn’t. Mother is doing okay, but there is the possibility she will lose it when she sees them both being lowered into the ground.”

“I mean,” sighing, “She is a strong woman but I don’t know if she is that strong and ready yet, afterall it has only been six months since you passed away. Did you know that Heath helped us fight against the railroad? He only arrived the day before and after talking with Mother he somehow just appeared and helped and I must say he was very good out there, carried himself well and sure knows how to shoot.”

“Well,” kissing the grave, “I’ll be going now Father,” he says, “I love you and I will see you again. Please watch over the family, that includes Nick and Heath. Please help us to come together and please don’t let us be wrong about Heath being here,” exhaling deeply, “It would be so devastating,” looking up to the sky, “You wouldn’t begin to know,” then mounting up on Jingo and looking back at the grave, “Bye Father,” he says and rides back to the ranch and after taking care of Jingo he goes inside the house.

After the children say goodnight and go up the stairs Heath is still hard at work in the kitchen with his eyes closed. Noticing Victoria goes over to him and tapping him lightly on the shoulder he quickly opens his eyes and after he is asked to turn in he replies, “Yes um,” and goes up the stairs with her bidding him goodnight.

Seconds later Jarrod comes through the front door to which Victoria comes in asking, “Have a good ride?” Jarrod replies, “I did. Went to Father’s grave.”

“How did that go?” Victoria wanted to know.

“Alright,” Jarrod answers, “First time I’ve been there since his passing.” Victoria says, “I still have to do that as of yet. I just haven’t had the courage to do it.” Replying, “I know,” Jarrod then asks, “Where are the others?”

“All turned in already,” Victoria notes, “They had a long and busy day.”

Nodding his head, “I think I’ll be doing the same,” Jarrod informs her, “We do have to be getting up early in the morning.” Victoria replies, “I know.”

“Oh Mother,” Jarrod says as he puts one foot on the bottom step. Victoria replies, “Yes Jarrod?” Jarrod informs her, “Today when I took Heath into town I didn’t acknowledge that he was my brother to anyone only that he lived here. I feel bad about it but for some reason I just couldn’t get the word brother to come out of my mouth.”

“Maybe” Victoria says “The initial shock still hasn’t worn off of you yet. We did say it was a big blow to all of us and it was; so I can’t see you being any different. I think once you are at ease with your feelings the initial shock will eventually disappear and you won’t have any trouble acknowledging him as your brother at all.”

Kissing her on the cheek, “Yeah maybe,” he replies, “I just wanted to let you know what happened. Goodnight.” Upon bidding him goodnight Victoria heads for the kitchen while Jarrod continues up the stairs to his room.
