Back in California Dr. Wells’ secretary received Helen’s call and explained that the scientist was at his Colorado Springs facility working on a classified project and wasn’t expected back in California for three months. Unless it was a life or death emergency she was not to contact him. Helen explained her concern for Kayce was important but by no means urgent. The secretary stated Rudy regularly called in for his messages and she would pass on Helen’s concerns as soon as she heard from her boss. Helen thanked her and hung up.

Only two hours later Dr. Wells contacted his office to pick up any messages. The one from Helen occupied his mind for the rest of the morning. Steve’s mother was never one to exaggerate or over react, the fact the she had real concerns for Kayce made him seriously consider his options.

Sitting at his desk he toyed with the paper that held Helen’s words. She stated that Kayce was not acting like herself and requesting Jim and Helen to keep Kyle more and more frequently. Helen also noted Kayce’s unusually sloppy appearance and obvious weight loss.

Unable to wait the doctor dialed Kayce’s phone number. After 20 rings without an answer he hung up. The next flight to California was not for another four hours. Rudy decided to go back to work and call her again later.

Each hour for the next four hours he received the same response. His frustration was beginning to be replaced with concern. Donning his suit coat he advised his colleagues that he would be leaving for a short time. They complained that it would slow their progress and cause them to miss the firm deadline set by the Defense Department. Rudy angrily mumbled something about cold-hearted bureaucrats and left the laboratory. The junior scientists just shook their heads at their team leader’s unexpected leave of absence and went back to their work, hoping to keep their backsides out of the fire.

Rudy attempted to contact Kayce once again from the Denver airport then again upon arriving in California. Still he did not get to speak to the young widow. As he rented a car and drove out to Steve’s ranch he mentally reviewed the last few weeks he had seen Kayce. He had no reason to believe she was not her old self.

The doctor arrived at his destination sooner than he expected. He was surprised to see Helen and Jim exiting their car in the driveway.

“Hi Rudy.” The Elgin’s greeted in unison.

“Hi.” Rudy replied and peered into the backseat, seeing the little blonde headed boy sound asleep.

Helen explained, “We just spent the afternoon at the park. He was exhausted but didn’t want to leave. We had to drag him away.” Rudy smiled at how much that sounded like Steve’s stubbornness. “Are you here to see Kayce?”

The doctor nodded, “I haven’t been able to reach her by phone and I thought I should drop by.”

Jim commented, “We just came by to get some warmer clothes for Kyle. Helen why don’t you stay here with Kyle and I’ll go grab what he needs.” Helen nodded as Rudy and Jim headed to the back door. Waiting for them to return she watched the last of the sun dip below the horizon.

Jim called out to his daughter-in-law as he opened the door with his key. There was silence throughout the darkening house. Each man took a separate path through the home wondering where the young woman would be. Jim came upon her lying prone on her bed wearing jeans and one of Steve’s denim shirts. He called to her and when she didn’t move he reached towards her arm. Feeling her cold right hand he pulled back in fear and urgently called out to Rudy.

The doctor came into the bedroom swiftly and sat on the bedside. He held his breath as he gently rolled her limp form onto her back and felt for a pulse on her neck. Her skin was cool and she was barely breathing. Rudy’s eyes raked over the nightstand then the floor. There at his feet was an empty pint bottle of vodka. His heart sank and stomach twisted remembering the last time Kayce was in his office.

“Jim hand me the phone.” Jim quickly did as requested. “I need you to check the bathroom.”

“The bathroom? For what?” The older man asked.

“For a prescription bottle.” Rudy replied as he dialed 911.

It didn’t take Jim long to exit the bathroom with a concerned expression. He waited patiently while Rudy explained the situation to the dispatcher and gave the address where the ambulance was needed. Placing the receiver back on the cradle the doctor looked up at the man holding the empty prescription bottle. “Is this it? I found it in the sink.”

Rudy took it from him and saw his name at the bottom of the label as the doctor who prescribed the medication. He just nodded sadly and rechecked his patient who remained unresponsive. His voice was soft and controlled as he gave further instructions, “Jim I think it would be best if you would go out and tell Helen what’s happening. I don’t want Kyle to see the ambulance or his mother this way.”

Jim was soon out the door and speaking with his wife. With tears in her eyes Helen agreed to take the sleeping child home and Jim would go with Kayce to the medical center. He promised to call with any news.

In the ambulance Jim sat quietly watching Rudy work. With an IV and oxygen mask in place he unbuttoned the first two buttons on the men’s shirt. Reaching into the oversized top he quickly attached electrodes to her torso, her decreased body weight obvious. The pattern on the monitor was not comforting but she wasn’t as bad off as he expected.

After fully examining Kayce at the medical center Rudy was relieved to only find alcohol poisoning. After pumping her stomach in case she did overdose he was surprised to find no medication expelled. He felt bad that he had to order the painful procedure but knew it was a necessity. He was thankful she was not conscious at the time.

Jim was allowed to see the patient as soon as she was settled in her room. After spending a few minutes at her bedside Jim leaned forward and tenderly brushed a few strands of hair from her peaceful face before placing a fatherly kiss on her forehead. It was time for him to return home to help Helen with Kyle. Rudy could see by his gesture that Jim really loved Kayce and, by the look on his face, felt as helpless as everyone else that cared about her. Jim was relieved his daughter-in-law was no longer at death’s door and was comforted by Rudy’s assurance that he would be remaining with her until she was discharged.

Rudy sat with her all night feeling he had failed her in some way. Her vital signs remained depressed until the treatment worked to remove the alcohol from her system. He sat forward in his bedside chair and caressed the back of her soft, delicate hand while staring at her youthful face. He mentally chastised himself for not being there for her when she needed a friend. He just couldn’t understand how she could go from a healthy mental state to a deep depression in such a short time. He wondered what had occurred since he left California.

smdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdm

It was early morning when Kayce began to stir. Rudy had dozed off but aroused quickly at the sound of her soft mumbling. “Kayce?” He said quietly watching her head slowly rolled towards him and heard her sigh. “Kayce?”

She slowly opened her blue eyes and glanced around. Seeing that she was on the hospital she furled her brow and inquired in a raspy voice, “What am I doing here?” Rudy smiled and chose to step lightly.

“It would seem you had too much to drink. You had alcohol poisoning. ” She eyed him and tried to remember what had transpired. “Do you remember drinking?” She placed a hand on her head and nodded. “I didn’t drink that much Rudy.” Her mind recalling the near empty pint bottle of vodka she had pulled from the oak cabinet in the family room, hoping it would sooth her heartache.

“Kayce I warned you when I made you bionic that only half your body mass is human. You can’t drink as much as you may have before.”

“I know Rudy. I must have forgotten how much I was drinking.” She closed her eyes grateful that she was still alive. “Why is my throat so sore?”

“Kayce, where are the pills I gave you?” She gave him a blank look so he elaborated, “The Valium?”

“Why?” She replied.

“When Jim and I found you we also found the empty bottle.” He watched her but her expression didn’t change. “Kayce, I thought you swallowed them. Your throat hurts from having your stomach pumped. I’m sorry but I had to be sure.”

Her dark blue eyes grew wide, “No Rudy! I wouldn’t …I mean…” She didn’t finish the statement.

“Where are the pills?” He asked more sternly making it obvious he wanted an immediate answer.

Kayce closed her eyes as tears silently leaked out and slid towards the pillow, “I flushed them down the toilet.” She answered in a whisper.

“Why?”

“I didn’t… I didn’t want to be tempted?” Rudy didn’t allow his shock to reach his face.

“Kayce what happened since I last saw you? You were doing so well, what happened to cause this depression?” He watched as the tears increased in quantity, her eyes squeezed tightly shut. He waited patiently until she could answer.

“I received a delivery last week.” She wiped her face with her hand and continued, “It was from a local jeweler. It came with a card from Steve.” The young widow took a deep shaky breath and choked out, “It was a gift for our third year wedding anniversary. This ring.” She held up her right hand to display the diamond and sapphire ring on her finger.

“And?”

She fumbled with the ring on her finger. “It reminded me of all the times when Steve and I were dating when he would always surprise me with gifts at my hotel room even though he was far away on assignment. I never did figure out how he did it.” She paused and took a deep breath. “I thought…I thought for sure he was still alive, you know… since we never found his body. I contacted the jeweler and asked when it was purchased. And he told me Steve purchased the ring two days before we left for the mission.” She wiped more tears as they fell. “Steve told the jeweler his job frequently sent him out of the country and that if he didn’t come to pick it up by a certain date to deliver it on our anniversary.”

There was a long silence as she stared at the expensive gift before she finished. “I guess it was just too much to take.” Her gaze moved up to meet the sympathetic brown eyes, “I swear to you Rudy I didn’t deliberately try to hurt myself. I wouldn’t because of Kyle. I just wanted the pain to stop for awhile.” Rudy stared deeply into her watery eyes and believed her.

The doctor placed a comforting hand on her shoulder and ordered her to rest while he contacted Helen and Jim. Kayce nodded then rolled onto her side away from him and sighed heavily.

smdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdm

In the late-morning Kayce heard a faint knock on her door. Turning onto her back she saw Rudy and Helen enter with Jim carrying Kyle following closely behind. Kayce’s face lit up at the sight of her bright-eyed son as she quickly sat up in the bed. Kyle immediately held out his little arms for his mother and Jim carefully placed the excited child on his mother’s lap. The lovable little boy swiftly wrapped his arms around Kayce’s neck and she held him tight.

The young woman who occupied the bed thanked her in-laws for taking such good care of her son and apologized for causing such trouble. Both Helen and Jim explained that everything was fine. Jim suggested they grab an early lunch giving Kayce time alone with Kyle. Helen agreed and walked out into the hallway with Rudy. The couple wanted to be assured that Kayce would be okay which Rudy did as soon as they were out of earshot.

Kyle told his mother what he had been up to since he last saw her, a trip to the zoo, the afternoons in the park, and helping his grandmother bake cookies. He then voiced his concern that she hadn’t come to get him.

“I’m sorry sweetie but mommy got sick and Uncle Rudy had to make her better.”

“Are you coming home with us?” he asked as the familiar eyes bore into hers from only a few inches away.

“I’m not sure honey.’ She replied brushing his hair from his forehead before placing a kiss on his head. She couldn’t keep the tears from filling her blue eyes.

“Mommy why are you sad?” The sensitive little boy asked.

“I just missed you that’s all.” She replied, tweaking his button nose which triggered a lopsided grin to grow.

Kyle, who was straddling Kayce’s hips, leaned forward placing his head on her chest, comforted by the sound of his mother’s heartbeat. She knew it was about the time for little Prince Charming’s nap. She carefully pulled the blanket up his back and wrapped her loving arms around him. Sinking down into her pillow mother and son dozed off.

An hour later she felt a presence next to her and opened her eyes to see Rudy beside her bed. He smiled at the sight before him. Kyle, while still asleep, rubbed his little fist against his eye before letting it fall limply on Kayce’s chest. He let out a deep sigh and continued his peaceful slumber.

“Do you want me to take him?” Rudy asked eyeing Steve’s son.

“No. It’s okay I’m used to it.” She whispered. “He slept like this for the first two weeks after Steve… after he… disappeared.” The doctor noted her choice of words and it deeply concerned him.

“Kayce, its okay to say it.”

“I know what you want me to say Rudy but I can’t. I can’t say Steve’s dead. I know you think it’s just my way of staying in denial but I can’t explain it. Steve and I have always been very close, emotionally and spiritually. I know he’s been gone for a long time and there is a very good chance he is dead but most times I just don’t feel it…I feel like he’s still alive somewhere.”

She took a deep breath trying to keep her frustration under control and not wake her son. “It makes me feel so damn helpless that I can’t just jump on a plane and go find him. Oscar tells me his undercover operatives found nothing to indicate Steve survived. I guess he feels that should pacify me but it doesn’t.”

Rudy began feeling Kayce’s thoughts were bordering on fantasy. “Kayce if he was still alive he would be here. You know there would be nothing that would keep him from you or Kyle.”

“I know that. Something must have happened to prevent that.” She saw the concern on his face. “Rudy I’m not delusional I swear.” The doctor smiled and replied, “Okay Kayce okay.”

The following day Kayce was discharged from the hospital. Rudy, who had received an angry call from Oscar about his unscheduled leave of absence, was headed back to Colorado Springs. Oscar’s anger quickly abated when Rudy explained the Kayce was hospitalized overnight and he couldn’t leave her. As Rudy threw his bag into the trunk of the rental car he wondered if Kayce was in fact becoming delusional. The doctor headed to the airport for his flight to Colorado. With his thoughts on how to convince Kayce that Steve was really gone he had no idea he was being followed.

They trailed at a safe distance already knowing where their prey was heading. Rudy took the car to the lot. At this time of the night there was no other human utilizing the parking area. The two armed men following the unsuspecting doctor made quick work of subduing him with chloroform and placing him in their car.

smdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdm

Rudy awoke with a throbbing headache. His eyes scanned his surroundings which included a dresser, a small bathroom and the bed on which he was now lying. He sat himself up slowly and rested a moment before venturing to his feet. The sun was shining through the open sliding glass doors to his right. He stepped through them onto a balcony. The cool salty air assaulted him immediately as the laughter and music from below echoed around him. He moved his gaze to the distant horizon and the ocean surrounded him with no landfall in sight. He realized where he was but the question was why.

Walking to the interior door he swung it open and came face to face with a large well-dressed man in his thirties.

“Dr. Wells, Mr. Van Buren would like to see you now that you are awake.” He gestured down the hall to the doctor’s right with a beefy hand.

Rudy stepped into the corridor without a word and was escorted to the next door down. Entering the large stateroom he was greeted by a distinguished gentleman offering his hand.

Rudy took the outstretched hand and listened to its owner, “Dr. Wells, what a pleasure it is to meet you. I hope you like the accommodations for your stay.”

“They are fine but why am I here and who are you?” He inquired with an annoyed tone.

“Robert Van Buren. I own this cruise ship.”

“And I was brought here because….?”

The taller man smiled and took a seat at his desk. “You see doctor I am not only in the cruise line business. I have branched out so to speak. I also buy and sell items that people and countries pay highly for. You just happen to be one of those much sought after items.” A knock sounded and Van Buren called out, “Enter.” Rudy turned and could not hide the shock that overcame him at the sight of the visitor.

“Hansen.”

“Dr. Wells. It’s good you could join us.”

“I didn’t exactly have a choice did I?”

“No, I’m afraid not. But it seems you are worth much more than Austin was when I sold him to Dolenz.” He gave Wells a cocky smile when Van Buren interrupted, “Dr. Wells, may I suggest you relax and enjoy the wonderful amenities my ship has to offer.”

“You mean I’m free to go?”

“To a point doctor. My assistant, Andrew or his brother John will be with you throughout your stay to be sure you don’t get lost, especially when we reach our ports of call.” Rudy eyed the two identical twins standing at least six feet five inches in height and weighed about 300 pounds each. “You will find everything you need, including clothes, in your suite.”

Seeing there wasn’t much he could do about his situation at this time Rudy turned and headed to his room.

smdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdm

In Washington Oscar was frantic when Rudy didn’t return to Colorado Springs. While his agents began their investigation Goldman flew to California to speak with Kayce Austin, the last person to see Rudy before he disappeared.

Kayce opened the door, a mix of surprise and anger fell upon her face. She had yet to let go of the lingering hurt from his betrayal on her last mission. “Oscar.”

“Kayce. May I come in?”

Kayce hesitated only a moment wondering what caused Oscar’s face to be so drawn. Oscar smiled at Kyle who was lying prone on the carpeted living room floor, knees bent and ankles crossed in the air as he colored in his coloring book. Kayce gestured to the couch with her hand and Oscar took a seat. “I’m afraid I have some unsettling news.” His words instantly had her attention. “Rudy’s missing. He never arrived at the Colorado Springs complex.”

Kayce’s stomach dropped at the thought of something happening to a man she respected, admired and cared deeply for. Oscar inquired, “Can you tell me about the last time you saw him?” Kayce thought back and explained her last interaction with the doctor as she sank into the living room chair. As Goldman continued to question her for specific details the phone rang, it was for the director.

When he hung up he shared the conversation with the young woman. The OSI agents tracked Rudy’s kidnappers to Florida. They suspected he was taken on board a cruise ship that embarked on a Caribbean cruise. Kayce demanded to be involved in the case but Oscar’s objected strongly, reminding her she had a child to consider. Kayce stifled a chuckle saying that didn’t bother him when he sent her and Steve to Central America. Seeing the dark look that fell on Oscar’s face she shamelessly twisted it to her advantage and used his guilt over Steve’s death to manipulate him into allowing her to help.

She flew with him to meet up with his team at the OSI’s Florida branch office. The team leader shared with the pair what they had uncovered so far. They shared the background on Robert Van Buren and his new business dealings. He now worked with a partner who went by the name ‘The Patriot’. Unfortunately their investigation did not afford them ‘The Patriot’s’ real identity or location. Their investigation pointed to the theory that Rudy was taken for his knowledge of bionics.

Oscar looked carefully over the file knowing there were many countries and individuals who would like to have their own cyborgs built. He quickly planned out their strategy. Looking at Kayce with a smile he calmly informed her she would be put undercover on the cruise ship as a lounge singer. Kayce’s face paled at the thought of singing in public. “Oscar I can’t sing!” She informed him with her heart fluttering in her chest.

“Now Kayce, I was told you are a great singer.” He smiled knowingly.

“Who in the world told you that?” She demanded.

“Steve. He said you sang very well…in the shower.”

Kayce sat back shocked, “Of course he’d say that, he has too, he‘s my husband…” Seeing Oscar’s concerned look at her choice of words she added quietly, “I mean was my husband. Oscar I don’t think I can pull that off. Can’t you send me in as a waitress or housekeeper?”

Oscar nodded adamantly, “No. It seems Robert Van Buren favorite pastime is to seduce beautiful entertainers, offering his help and finances to make them famous. It will be easier for you to get close to him.”

Kayce chuckled and stated honestly, “Oh, so not only do I have to pull off being a singer but beautiful too….I think your stretching things way too far Oscar, really. I think you need to rethink your plan.”

“No Kayce, I need you to get on that ship and sing your heart out. At the same time I need you to get close to Van Buren and also get Rudy out in one piece.”

“Well, since you put it so simply, why don’t I just swing by the Kremlin and get a list of their top covert operatives while I’m at it?” Her sarcasm was not lost on the director. Seeing his eyes narrow she conceded, “Okay, fine, I’ll give it my best shot but I still say there’s no way I can get hired as a singer.” Oscar knew she may have a point but hoped her physical attributes would give her an advantage and at least distract Van Buren enough to overlook her lack of professional training. The pair stood from their chairs as Oscar instructed, “We leave for Cozumel this afternoon. I will have someone get you everything you need for your trip.”

smdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdm

In Central America Steve was feeling almost 100% and was anxious to begin his mission to catch Hansen. He thanked the old Indian for his help in not only saving his life but also providing him with the information that pointed him in the right direction. The shaman shook his young friend’s hand and wished him luck on his journey. Steve gave him a smile and headed off on foot.

As soon as he was out of the elder’s sight he picked up the pace to a bionic run. As he ran he blinked back the wetness that threatened to stain his face. Finally headed for home his thoughts revolved around his son. At two years old he wondered if his little buddy would even remember him when he got home, if he got home. Pushing the negative thoughts from his mind he concentrated on covering the miles as swiftly as possible. He didn’t have much time. The ship would be leaving its first Port of Call in seven hours and he needed to be in Cozumel before it left.

smdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdm

Rudy was chaperoned and entertained by Van Buren during his waking hours on the ship. They sat on deck discussing politics and world events. Van Buren passed the time eyeing the young ladies that sunned themselves at the pool. The doctor found the talkative man to be arrogant and egocentric, actually thinking the world really did revolve around him and his business dealings. Rudy was frustrated to find he was never left alone.

In the evening they ate dinner in the Van Buren’s favorite lounge. He enjoyed listening to the singers he had hired under the guise of helping them get to the bright lights of stardom. The 55-year-old took full advantage of having these young, lonely women on his ship, far from home, and willing to do whatever it took to become famous.

This night as they ate in the well-appointed room filled with passengers enjoying the generous food choices Rudy glanced about the room. There was a small stage making the entertainment very intimate. The long mahogany bar occupied most of the side wall staffed by two handsome bartenders busily filling the never-ending drink orders.

The doctor figured that Oscar was fully aware of his absence by now. He just wondered if the OSI would even think to look for him at sea. He may very well be on his own on this trip. He sat forward and enjoyed the elegant meal as much as he could with the knot in his stomach. The physician thought of his chances should he try to escape now that the ship was docked in Cozumel. It was almost impossible with one of the hulking twins always near him. He decided to let the situation play out a while before deciding his action.

On the way to Cozumel Kayce came up with a surefire way to not only get on board the ship but meet Van Buren almost at the same time. She shared her idea with Oscar who agreed it was a good one. Little did she know it would help more than just her gain access to the ship.

At dusk the large ship, lit up like a Christmas tree, was getting ready to head out into the vast ocean. Kayce said her goodbye to Oscar and he wished her luck. She headed to the immense floating resort getting into her role as she went, placing her long hair under the baseball cap on her head. She walked along the dock a while planning her way onto the ship.

Steve spent most of the afternoon waiting in a dreary alley near the water. He couldn’t get his thoughts off his family and what they were going through the past three months. He smiled proudly knowing Kayce was tough and resilient. He had no doubt she was making the best of the situation. And then there was Kyle. Steve let out a heavy sigh remembering the first time his son uttered the word ‘Dada’ and his first steps. His smile quickly reached his eyes but it swiftly fell at the sight of the cruise ship’s preparations for departure. He had boarded large ships without detection on more than one occasion. He was ready with a plan.

Both Austin’s moved covertly about unnoticed by the few people wandering about. Seeing a man in uniform far above her Kayce decided to approached from the stern. Steve, finding a sparsely populated part of the ship he decided to board from the aft section of the ship. Unaware that the other was in such close proximity they both hopped over the wooden dock and began a swift, belly-up, hand-over-hand bionic ascent up the heavy ropes that tethered the ship to land. Each hit the deck at the same time at opposite ends and tried to blend in with the vacationers. Steve headed around to the starboard side while Kayce moved herself along the port side. Both in search of a hiding place. Kayce headed down a flight of metal stairs mingling with the passengers. She soon felt the ship’s subtle movement under her as it headed out to sea and she headed down the carpeted hallway.

Steve was making good progress among the tanned guests. He heard the familiar low horn as the ship moved out. He let a grin cross his face that he was one step closer to going home. Looking behind him he suddenly saw Hansen headed straight for him and he wasn’t ready to face his adversary. He hoped Hansen’s mind, not be expecting to see a dead man, would not allow recognition to come too quickly. Steve looked down the corridor in front of him for an escape and a woman wearing a baseball cap caught his attention.

Kayce thought she was safe from detection when a tall brown-haired man unexpectedly accosted her from behind. She sucked in her breath as he forcefully pulled her down the corridor.

Her mind was moving at light speed. She decided now was as good a time as ever. She began fighting his forward movement. “LET GO OF ME!! DO YOU ALWAYS TREAT YOUR GUESTS THIS WAY?!?!?” The brown-haired man was silent as he continued to half drag her down the hall.

Unbeknownst to him, Hansen entered the hallway behind a man he thought was long since dead. Steve’s heart was pounding in his chest thinking he would surely be recognized even with his beard and longer hair. He slowed his steps along the wall at the sound of the young woman in front of him yelling at the large man propelling her forward. Her voice would have sounded familiar to her husband but Steve was too preoccupied with avoiding capture with Hansen coming within inches of him.

The loud voices also caught Hansen’s attention and he picked up his pace past Steve, approaching the young woman who sounded belligerent. Steve let out a sigh and kept his head low as he immediately turned down the next adjacent corridor. He silently thanked the unknown woman for rescuing him from his unexpected situation.

“What is going on here?” Hansen asked the burly security guard holding the sandy-haired woman.

“She’s a stowaway. I saw her climb off the ropes.”

“What are you planning on doing with her?” He eyed her with a furled brow wondering why her face looked vaguely familiar. Kayce kept her head down not recognizing the man she only had a few minutes exposure to over three years ago.

“I’m taking her to see Mr. Van Buren. I figure he can decide what to do with her.”

“Alright see that you do.” Hansen ordered before he headed back in the direction he came from, the woman’s face still not registering in his memory. His thoughts moved onto more pressing issues like when his buyer would be coming to take Dr. Wells off their hands.

Steve got himself situated in the crew’s quarters. He pulled uniform’s from lockers until he found one in his size. He quickly changed clothes and was surprised by the approach of a young uniformed man with a clipboard.

“You must be the new guy.” He offered his hand as a greeting. Steve took it and nodded. “I have you in the Starlight Lounge tonight. Mr. Van Buren would like you to keep the drinks flowing but not too strong. Understand?” Steve nodded silently again. “What’s your name again?” The man asked.

Steve swallowed hard hoping the new employee’s name was not listed on that clipboard. “Steve.” He said cautiously.

“Steve huh?” The shipman looked down at his list, “It says here your name is Shawn.” He looked up at Steve who smiled.

“That’s my full legal name, Shawn Steven. I prefer Steve.”

“Okay… Steve it is. I’ll try to remember that. Enjoy your first night.” He stated as he turned and exited the room. Steve let out a long exhale, sitting himself in a bench. ‘So far, so good.’ He thought. Now all he needed to do was find the Starlight Lounge.

Meanwhile Kayce was about to be introduced to Van Buren. ‘Enter’ was heard from behind the closed door before she was shoved into the room. The business suited man rose from his desk. “What do we have here?” He looked the attractive woman over.

“She’s a stowaway. What would you like me to do with her?” The guard asked.

Robert walked around the slender woman dressed in tight white shorts and pink t-shirt that showed all her curves. “What do you have to say for yourself young lady?” He stood in front of the woman waiting for her answer.

“I needed to get away from Cozumel and I don’t have any money. I saw your ship and hopped on board.” Her eyes slowly raised from the carpet locking with his, looking very vulnerable to the tall businessman, just the way he like them.

“So you decided to take a free ride did you? What is your name?”

“Karen.”

“Why did you need to leave Cozumel Karen?”

“My boyfriend was after me. I wouldn’t go back to him…he hit me.”

Van Buren’s mouth slid slowly into a grin at the young woman’s unfortunate circumstances. “So what do you think I should do with you?”

“Please don’t call the police. I promise I will find a way to repay the fare.” She looked up at him with tears welling in her dark blue eyes melting his reserve.

“Oh I don’t think that will be necessary. Maybe you and I can work out a deal.” She stiffened at the implied meaning but relaxed a little when he asked, “So what can you do?” He inquired as he seated himself on the edge of his desk.

“Well I was a waitress once. I was pretty good. A long time ago I sang in a band.” She stared at her sneaker-clad feet, the last statement immediately getting his attention.

“Would you take off your hat please?” He requested. She looked up at him and slowly complied. He found himself unexpectedly aroused as her soft hair fell around her delicate features, her sapphire eyes pulling him in. She played shy until he asked. “So you can sing?”

“A little but I’ve never done it in front of more than a few people…” she gave him a small smile. He grinned at the thought of molding her into his image of a star.

“Charles, see this young lady to a room and get her whatever she needs. Maybe she can give us a little show later.” Kayce thanked him quietly before turning to leave.

smdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdm

Van Buren and his entourage arrived at the Starlight Lounge precisely at 7:00 p.m. for dinner and a show. Rudy was escorted to the table by his hulking body guard. “So Dr. Wells. Are you enjoying your stay so far?”

“I guess.” The doctor responded feeling very much alone.

“Well you are in for a real treat this evening. I have found a new talent.” He chuckled at his own impulsiveness. “Of course we have yet to hear her sing but if her voice is anything like the rest of her we will be thoroughly entertained.”

Hansen took a swig of his drink, “What does this one look like?”

“Ah the face of an angel and a body that just demands to be appreciated.” Van Buren answered. “I can’t wait to hear her sing. If she can carry a tune I think I can make something of her.”

“Yeah sure.” Hansen commented under his breath. Bored by his partner’s frequent infatuations he excused himself to get another drink. He headed to the bar that was staffed, as usual, by two bartenders. Steve was placing the clean glasses under the bar when he caught sight of Hansen’s approach. He quickly turned and deliberately knocked a bottle of whiskey onto the tile floor. Grabbing a towel he crouched down and began soaking up the amber liquid keeping his back to the balding man requesting a refill. Soon the tipsy man retreated and Steve, once again, sighed in relief. As he stood to watch his adversary return to his table Steve’s eyes widened in shock seeing Rudy Wells sharing the table near the stage.

His eyes surveyed the scene. Hansen and a well-dressed man had their backs to Steve. ‘Probably Van Buren.’ Steve thought. There was a very large man next to Rudy. Zooming in with his telephoto lens Steve could easily see the light perspiration on Rudy’s forehead. By the look on his friend’s face he was not here under his own free will. Steve went about his fast-paced bartending duties while keeping a constant eye on the center front table, grateful for his good luck of being in the right place at the right time. He was about to find out how very true that was.

As dessert was served the lights dimmed over the crowd as the stage lights went up. Backstage Kayce was making every attempt not to hyperventilate as her fear rose up to choke her. She took several deep breaths, pacing back and forth assuring herself she was suppose to look nervous seeing how she told Van Buren she never sang in front of a large crowd before. She fought the nausea that tugged at her as she stepped onstage. She had no idea the two closest men in her life would be in the crowd to witness her public singing debut.

The piano sounds rose up and Kayce, dressed in a slim fitting red gown with her hair elegantly pulled up with random stands touching her long neck, took a shaky breath before beginning her first song. Her delicate, manicured hand held the microphone to her glossy lips with a trembling hand. The spotlight danced off the diamond jewelry draped around her neck and wrist. She tried to keep a mental picture of her shower, pretending she was there, all alone, and no one could hear her.

Robert Van Buren grinned from ear to ear as the voice that left her sensual lips was as smooth as silk. She hit each note right on and had the appreciative crowd’s full attention by the end of the first verse.

Rudy was pushing his food about his plate, now fully aware he was being delivered to a buyer at the final Port of Call, St. Bart’s Island. ‘Only days away’ he thought, ‘I need to come up with a plan.’ He gave up trying to eat and looked up at the beautiful, mellow sound coming from the singer on stage. His breath caught in his throat at the sight of the familiar face. It was Kayce! His excitement was quickly smothered by the realization that Hansen was sitting at the table with him. Rudy remembered Hansen had met Kayce briefly when Steve was kidnapped. Seeing as how the inebriated Hansen made no sign of recognition Rudy relaxed a bit.

With the bright stage lights shining on her and the dim room light a terrified Kayce couldn’t see much passed the first row of tables. She was able to see Van Buren at the table in front of her and she smiled warmly, affectively hiding her surprise at seeing Rudy across the table from him. Dr. Wells’ face was equally placid but his excitement grew knowing his rescue was not far off. She belted out the slow, soulful love song with feeling as she gracefully sashayed off the stage and walked among the closest tables. She winked at a few male patrons as she passed and they smiled eagerly. The young woman sauntered by the doctor, stopping to lay a light hand on his shoulder as she held a long note. A few seconds later, beginning the second verse she gave his shoulder a slight squeeze before moving back to the stage, letting him know he was not alone in this.

Steve was busy in the backroom collecting more ice when the familiar voice instantly caught his ear. He dropped the large bag of frozen cubes on the table and sucked in his breath. Closing his eyes he thought he was dreaming. He listened for a few moments before picking up the bundle and swiftly returning to the bar. His eyes took in her beauty while she continued entertaining the crowd.

Steve watched his wife intently as she stepped down from the stage. His heart broke knowing she was so close but unapproachable at the moment. It took all of his inner strength not run to her and hold her in his arms after such a long time. He focused his bionic eye and saw the light squeeze on Rudy’s shoulder. He let a lopsided smile fall on his face making his plans for later.

His smile suddenly dropped as he remembered Hansen knew she was an OSI operative, a bionic one at that. Panic rose up quickly as his mind raced with his options. He watched as Hansen continued to eat his dinner and drink, oblivious to the agent across from him. The sight gave Steve some relief knowing the traitor would have done something by now if he recognized her.

After eating the meal Rudy excused himself to get a drink and stretch his legs. His bodyguard took a step to follow when Van Buren halted him. “Let him go John, where is he going to go? We’re in the middle of the ocean. Just make sure he doesn’t leave the room.” John kept a close eye on his charge moving away from him to order a drink.

Steve was standing with his back to the crowd facing the multitude of bottles. The well-known voice that called out for a whiskey made him smile. Seeing how his co-worker had gone to get more clean glasses he turned slowly, happy and relieved to see Rudy was alone. The doctor still had his eyes glued on the stage as Steve went about pouring the drink and suppressing a chuckle. He placed it in front of his still distracted friend. When Rudy went to blindly pick it up Steve held it firmly to the bar until the head turned and the brown eyes met his.

Rudy looked up confused at the long-haired bartender’s unwillingness to release the glass. For a split second his mind did not recognize the bearded face before him. It looked similar to a friend long since gone. When the crooked grin fell upon Steve’s lips he winked causing Rudy’s eyes to grow wide with shock. Seeing the bodyguard approaching over the doctor’s shoulder Steve quickly whispered, “Your room tonight.”

“Room 1214.” The doctor whispered back as John came to stand at his side, curious as to what was taking the doctor so long.

Late in the evening Kayce joined Van Buren in his room with Rudy. The doctor wanted so much to pull her aside and tell her Steve was alive but Van Buren controlled the conversation. Rudy was beside himself and wanted to excuse himself to return alone to his room to meet with Steve but did not want to leave Kayce alone with the enemy.

Kayce was also anxious to talk with Rudy alone, to setup their plan of escape. She stifled a small yawn and stated her need to return to her room. She planned to get to Rudy’s room later which was right next door. Van Buren asked to be alone with the pretty lady and the doctor gave her a glance as he stood and thanked her for such a wonderful evening. Her expression told him she had everything well under control. Rudy said his goodbyes and headed to his room. Looking at his watch it was already 2:00 a.m. He nodded to John who took up his watch in the corridor outside Rudy’s door.

Kayce allowed Robert to slide his hand around her waist and compliment her singing talent. She surprised him by asking if there was a way she could thank him for all his hospitality. He gave her a seductive grin and asked her to spend the night with him. She returned his smile with a mischievous one of her own and pulled slowly from his arms.

While one went to put on some soft romantic music the other began pouring two glasses of expensive champagne. The nimble fingers were quick to pull apart the tiny capsule and dump its contents into the bubbly liquid. The additive would render the other partner unconscious within minutes.

They toasted their good fortune of meeting one another and emptied their glasses. As they slow danced Van Buren began placing kisses along Kayce’s long neck waiting patiently for the time to make his move.

The doctor tiredly entered his stateroom and only turned on the bedside lamp. He sat on the bed and just shook his head at this evening’s revelations. Kayce was here to help him and Steve was alive! He took a deep breath and was startled by a quiet voice behind him.

“I didn’t know you were due for a vacation Rudy?” The doctor turned and stood with a big grin on his face. He watched Steve flip on the radio to provide background noise so the guard or Van Buren would not hear their whispered voices.

“Steve…I…where…how did you…?”

Steve held up his hand, “Easy Rudy. Take a deep breath.” He sat his friend on the bed and settled next to him.

“I’m not dead Rudy and you’re not dreaming. I’ll explain everything in detail later. Right now I need you to tell me what is going on.”

Rudy explained his kidnapping and being sold to an unknown buyer. They both surmised that Kayce was sent in to get Rudy out. Steve stated that he was following Hansen and was not aware Rudy or Kayce was even involved.

“Steve we have to go tell Kayce!” Steve just nodded and his eyes became moist.

“She looked great out there didn’t she?” Steve asked softly with a proud smile and Rudy nodded then explained, “Steve she’s been having a tough time of it since your last mission.”

“I figured as much. How’s Kyle?”

Rudy smiled, “He’s the most charming two-year-old I’ve ever met. He’s healthy and slowly growing into his father’s face.”

Steve’s brow shot up and he grinned, “Poor kid. I had hoped he would look more like Kayce.”

“He really misses you. He can’t understand why you are gone and where you went.”

“Believe me if I could have come home I would have but I was a little… indisposed.”

“How did you survive? Kayce said you had a bad gunshot wound to your chest.” The doctor eyed his tired friend closely.

Steve rubbed the exhaustion from his face with both hands. His body wasn’t ready for going days without any real rest. “I did. In fact I thought I was dead. Then I woke up in this cave in the back country with an old Indian shaman. He doctored me up but it took months before I was strong enough to walk any real distance. Then I heard about Hansen and I couldn’t let it go.” The two sat in silence for a few moments.

Suddenly there was a knock on the door adjoining Rudy’s room with Van Buren’s. Steve quickly concealed himself in the bathroom. The doctor ambled over and tried to turn the knob. Finding it locked he heard Kayce’s hushed voice, “Rudy, It’s me. Open the door.”

Rudy replied, “I don’t have the key. You’ll have to break the lock.” Before he finished the sentence Kayce twisted the steel lock with her bionic hand and stepped gracefully through the door. “Rudy I need to talk to you.” She whispered knowing there was a guard just outside Rudy’s door. She swiftly closed it behind her.

“I need to talk to you too.” Rudy said as he walked across the room to the glass doors and Kayce followed. He hoped what he needed to tell her was not as much of a shock for her as it was for him.

He turned purposely towards her, “Kayce, remember you told me you didn’t think Steve was dead?” She nodded affirmatively with a furled brow. “Well you were right.”

Her eyes grew as big as saucers, “You mean you found out something about his disappearance?” She asked barely keeping her voice at a whisper.

“No. I saw him.”

“You saw him? Rudy you’ve been stuck on this ship for days. If you saw him then….” She couldn’t finish the words and Rudy nodded as he finished the statement for her, “He’s here, onboard.”

Kayce’s heart was pounding furiously in her chest, “Where? Where is he?” She asked urgently. A shadow fell behind her, “I’m right here.” A familiar voice said softly. At first she stood completely still and held her breath for a few moments, the tears welling up in her eyes. She was thinking if this was a dream he might disappear when she moved.

Slowly she turned and saw her husband step into the light looking very different from the last time she saw him. She locked eyes with him as he came to stand before her. She placed a loving hand on his tanned cheek and a smile grew on her tear stained face at the sight of his beard and mustache. His hair was longer and a little wavy, falling just past his collar but his azure eyes were the same, the same eyes that could see into her soul, the eyes of her lover.

“I missed you.” He stated plainly as his hands went around her familiar form and she melted against him. She chuckled, placing her arms around his neck and replied, “I missed you too.” Their faces leaned together and they shared a deep, passionate kiss that continued a few seconds until the doctor cleared his throat to remind them they weren’t alone. The couple broke off the kiss and smiled at Rudy.

“Sorry.” They apologized in unison, their cheeks blushing, their hands clutched tightly together.

The trio sat down and Steve laid out the plan that would get Rudy off the ship the next evening. Steve would continue to monitor Hansen’s movement, not wanting him to slip away. Kayce was to radio Oscar to pick up Rudy at the next Port of Call, St. Lucia. Kayce would need to distract Rudy’s guard and possible Van Buren long enough for Steve to get him inland.

Once Rudy was safely handed off to OSI agents Steve would return to the ship. He and Kayce would see about getting Hansen and Van Buren into custody at the next stop, St. Bart’s Island.

Rudy was suddenly curious how Kayce got past Van Buren to come to his room through the adjoining door. Kayce gave the men a wicked smile and stated matter-of-factly, “He asked me to spend the night with him and I agreed.” Steve’s left eye brow almost reached the ceiling at her brazen statement causing Kayce to giggle quietly and continued, “I drugged him, stripped him of his clothes and put him in bed.” She glanced at her watch and finished, “In about three hours I will wake him as I appear to be getting dressed, giving him the impression that he just had the best night of his life.” She gave her dumbfounded husband a wink as Rudy chuckled.

She stood to return to Van Buren’s room and Steve got to his feet to take her in a tight embrace. He placed a hand on each side of her face, kissing her hard and she gratefully returned the affection. When his longing lips finally released hers he made a request, “Don’t take any unnecessary chances okay?” Kayce nodded with her eyes locked on his and replied, “See you soon?”

He smiled, “You bet.”
