Mathison is Back!
ALL MY CHILDREN, which just last week put out a casting call for the character of Ryan Lavery, apparently decided not to settle for anything less than the original, seeing as a show rep tells that
Cameron Mathison will be returning to the role he vacated one year ago. (A first air date was not yet available.)
Mathison has kept busy since relocating with his wife to Los Angeles, guest-starring on such series as THE DREW CAREY SHOW, JAG and CSI. Even so, the popular actor very recently shared, "My life out out
here has been fun and everything but I really dug being on [AMC]. I really liked that lifestyle."
Sosnovska May Get Contract
Though protests continue to pour in, All My Children is reportedly considering reworking some of its storylines to keep newcomer Olga Sosnovska (Lena Kundera) around in Pine Valley. The reworking would also reportedly result in Sosnovska being inked to a long-term contract with the show.
According to a show source, Sosnovska's stint on All My Children was slated to last only through the end of Spring. However, Bianca and Lena's budding romance has reportedly won over some network execs who are now mulling the possibility of exploring the pairing in greater detail.
All My Children made daytime television history last month by airing the first lesbian kiss on a daytime drama. Ratings for the April 23rd episode of All My Children, the episode in which the kiss occurred, were up by 13% over other AMC episodes that week.
In the next few weeks, Lena's reclusive mother, Paulina, will be seen on-screen. This is said to have been a part of the original story outline for Lena. While the show is seeking out a "big name" actress to play the part, there is currently no word from the network about who might be playing the part.
If Lena were to remain in Pine Valley, it is presumed that she and Bianca would continue their romance. In appointing Megan McTavish as AMC's new head writer earlier this month, ABC Daytime President Brian Frons mentioned that All My Children "is venturing into new and uncharted territory." The remark could very well reference Bianca and Lena's relationship.
A poll conducted by Soap Opera Central in 2000 asked visitors how they felt the writers would ultimately handle Bianca's homosexuality. A sizeable portion - 43% -- of voters said that they felt Bianca would be confused about her sexuality, but ultimately turn out to be heterosexual. Only a scant 11% believed that Bianca would find a lover and live a happy life. That total was about equal to the number of respondents who felt strongly that homosexuality should not be addressed by a daytime drama.

AMC Makes History
All My Children will again make daytime television history this week - and in doing so it finds itself smack dab in the middle of controversy.
In November 2000, Bianca Montgomery, daughter of the legendary Erica Kane (played by Eden Riegel and Susan Lucci, respectively) came out of the closet. This marked the first time that a core character of a soap opera was announced to be lesbian. Reaction to "making" Bianca gay came fast and furious - with some All My Children viewers talking boycott and others applauding the show's decision to be a more encompassing canvas of American life.
The resulting whirlwind prompted The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) to conduct a study about daytime viewers' opinions of a homosexual character and "gay storylines." Soap Opera Central was pleased to have been an integral part of that study.
Over the past few weeks, Bianca and Boyd have both been trying to learn more romantically about their Enchantment co-worker Lena. While viewers have seen Lena have sexual relations with a man - Michael Cambias - they've also seen Lena be more than just a little flirtatious with Bianca.
On April 23rd, Bianca and Lena will share an on-screen kiss, the first such kiss to occur on a major US network during the daytime programming hours. News of the kiss -- or something more -- was first reported by the NY Post last month - and media outlets across the country were quick to pick up on the story. ABC, however, was quick to deny that there would be gratuitous sex shown on the air.
"A relationship will develop between Bianca and Lena," an All My Children spokesperson said in a statement. "However, at this time, there are no plans for explicit love-making scenes on-screen."
Over the past week, Soap Opera Central has conducted a poll to learn how viewers are reacting to the same-sex kiss. The poll asked: "How do you feel about AMC's rumored lesbian 'romance'?" 41-percent of the respondents said they felt it was a "smart, bold move," while 33 percent said they were disgusted by the idea and wouldn't want to see a gay scene on the show.
"ABC said they were surprised by the 41 percent who said bring it on, but because that 33 percent say they're repulsed, that's why we need to see it," said Scott Seomin, GLAAD's entertainment media director. "Daytime dramas are known for their over-the-top storylines and love triangles. Gay and lesbian characters are sorely missing (from daytime TV) and would add a lot to the crazy plots as well as educate viewers and enlighten people to our community."
Jack Scalia Leaves AMC This Spring
According to posts on his official web site, Jack Scalia (Chris Stamp) will be leaving All My Children this spring. The news comes just three months shy of the actor’s second anniversary with the show.
Scalia joined All My Children in June 2001 as a janitor, who soon turned out to be an undercover federal agent probing Enchantment over alleged drug trafficking. The high-profile actor soon found himself involved in an on-screen romance with diva Erica Kane, played by Susan Lucci.
In his short time with All My Children, Scalia has seen three different head writers. The writer responsible for incorporating his character into the show left just a few months after Scalia hit the airwaves. Since that time, there has been an extended period of time in which Chris and Erica’s romance has been “back-burnered.” At one point in time, the couple was to have wed around Christmas or New Year’s Eve of last year.
In recent weeks, Pine Valley District Attorney Jackson Montgomery, played by Walt Willey, has made it his mission to uncover the details of Chris Stamp’s sordid past. It would seem that this past will be used as a tool to write Scalia’s character off the show’s canvas.
Scalia earned a Daytime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in 2002 for his work on AMC.
An exact exit date for Scalia is not yet known and is being kept under wraps. It would seem that Scalia’s stint would wrap up sometime near or during the May Sweeps period.
AMC had no comment about Scalia’s upcoming exit.
"Marian" Role Recurring
Long-time All My Children fixture Jennifer Bassey (Marian Colby) has been taken off contract with the show.
Bassey, an Outstanding Supporting Actress Daytime Emmy nominee in 1999, has been with All My Children in various capacities since 1983. Though the actress had been see on-screen for nearly 15 years, it wasn't until 1998 that the actress was given a long-term contract with AMC.
In recent months, however, Bassey's character has had very little airtime. With Marian and Stuart living a happily-ever-after life, it seemed that the writers of All My Children could not find a use for either character.
The good news for Bassey's fans is that the actress will remain with the show in a recurring capacity. This means that Bassey will see work on an "as needed" basis. According to Bassey, her character will not be killed off.
A message on Bassey's official web site indicates that the actress and her companion, Luther, have gone to a warmer climate together for some quiet time.
