WINNER'S CIRCLE: Can new hits push Emmy envelope?

By Matt Roush -- "Will the president and his West Wing cronies be invited to the Emmy party? How about unruly little Malcolm in the Middle? Or those heartsick lovers on Once and Again? When this year's Emmy nominations are announced the morning of July 20, some of us will hope against hope that new blood can freshen the drama and comedy categories, too often filled with the same names year after year.

If it's true that the real honor is just to get nominated, let's at least hope that West Wing's chief executive, Martin Sheen, and his first-rate staff (including Allison Janney, Bradley Whitford, Richard Schiff, John Spencer and Rob Lowe) can break through the logjam created by such ensembles as The Practice, ER and NYPD Blue. Likewise, just about everyone on Once and Again, from Sela Ward and Billy Campbell to their TV children and ex-spouses, deserves recognition. ..."
