- Blogroll Me!
News (as of 29/03/01)

OK OK so it has been about 2 weeks since I last wrote anything, and I am going to have to keep this entry short - but don't get too peeved off my lovely followers who hinge on every little thing that I write (I know you are somewhere!!!!) But anyway, I have a cell-phone and my number is 021-355-852 so all my admirers can call me whenever they want - except in the middle of a lecture - and they can talk and talk to lovely liddle me!

University is same-old same-old which is nothing unusual although I am on holiday at the end of next week, and in that time I have a shit load of work to do because there is a geography test in about a week and then I have about three geography assignments due all on the one day (I know that I should have got into them earlier.... but hey!) and then a Sociology Essay due in the middle of the holidays which seems pretty crazy to me, but you know that's life and I am just a little univeristy student who really doesn't have any impact on the system! DOWN WITH THE SYSTEM!!!! OK maybe I have been reading Craccum a bit much.....

Very scary today - Sociology was actually interesting for once and not sleeping pill material. This was probably because we had a different lecturer who was kinda unlike anyone that I have had before (he actually sounded like a person for once!) and the fact that most of what we did was Philosophy and not actually Sociology like we normally do (shock horror!)

Unfortunately I can't say the same thing about Geography which was once again just like an Economics lecture - but anyway!!! Enough about my sad University life and onto stuff worth discussing!

If a tree falls in a forest and but no-one can hear the sound that it 'makes' then did it really make a sound? This epistemological question (try that in a spelling test!) is fascinating when you realise that there cannot possibly be one single right answer and one single wrong answer. This means that you cannot 100% say that it does make a sound - becuase what is a sound but something that is heard? - but you cannot really dismiss the idea of a sound being emitted because the natural result of a tree falling down is vibration which results in sound waves which is therefore a noise.

This apparent paradox becomes even more interesting if we put it in the situation of a baseball game and how a line umpire chooses whether a ball is hit foul or fair. Philosophers, Sociologists and others have come to the conclusion that there are three different ways of deciding how to rule whether the ball is foul or fair and that they are categorised into an Objective view, a Subjective view and a Creativist view. The Objective way of deciding is through the "I called it a foul because it was a foul"; the Subjective way is "I called it a foul because it looked like a foul to me" and the Creativist viewpoint is "it was a foul because I called it to be a foul".

Obviously if we take the scientific view if this argument then it's clear that a ball is either foul or fair irrespective of what the umpire says because it must go either one side of the foul like or the other side of the foul line (presuming that the foul line has no actual width itself but is just a means of dividing) and is therefore either a foul or not a foul because of that.

Personally I find the Subjective view similarly plausible if you just change your method of thinking slightly. The game is based around the decision of the umpire and even if that particular decision is technically wrong the game will go on according to the decision. This differs from the Creativist view because the Subjective view is still based upon what is seen and the fact that the umpire has no real influence in the call apart from what they percieve the ball to be - fair or foul. Whereas in the Creativist viewpoint the umpire could (theoretically) call the ball in or out even though it is clearly not the case. In baseball - as in other sports this can be seen as the logical answer because it is the call of the umpire which stands even if it might not be the absolute right answer.

STRESS!!! Damn it's sad that I am getting that tight feeling in my chest again which is so well known as stress about my essays and assignments and the fact that I am not really 'into' University very much this year. So far I have just been able to get through the courses on my ability to pick things up pretty quickly and my ability to crash learn at the end of the semester. However I suppose that there will become a stage when I will have to put my head down and start putting in the hard work - I don't know whether I look forward to it or not because at the moment my life is incredibly uneventful and I don't really feel as though I am getting much out of University.

I can't believe how often I throw away perfect opportunities because of my shyness! It's really sad and something that I really should try to overcome in my life - I have managed it to a certain extent, but the hardest one of all is obviously making the first move with a girl who you have admired for quite a while. I had the perfect oppourtunity today - but there will be others and my time will come, I just have to be patient I keep telling myself.

'Life is like a moment in space - when the dream is gone it's a lonelier place'. Bette Midler. Hold onto your dreams people because sometimes that's all that can drive you and remember that only you can take your dreams away from you and only you can realise your dreams! IT'S UP TO YOU!

News (as of 11/03/01)

Party last night (well kinda party) went pretty well I think as the alcahol was plentiful and the guys didn't massively outnumber the girls for once (always a good thing). Although I don't know why people wanted to watch Clueless (even though Alicia Silverstone is a babe).

The only possible bad thing was that I hardly got any sleep at all last night (partly thanks to the friggin cat) and I had to work today for a little while. The good news was that McDonalds obviously thought that I wasn't up to working (which I was!! They were actually just a overstaffed) so I got to go home early!

I know that I should start on my two essays soon - but honestly I just can't be bothered quite yet (my stress levels haven't reached a high enough stage to force me off my ass into something) and also the information for the first of the two essays due is mainly through the lectures this upcoming week.

They say that you learn as much at University outside the lecture theatre as you do in it.... I suppose that's plausible because for many people it's a break out from the family for the first time or a chance to experience independence. Because of this I haven't really experienced the full 'greater learning' of Univeristy yet - but since I plan to spend at least another two years here and probably four I will eventually break free into the real world and experience everything that goes with it.

OK.... now this is a question I have to pose: If someone was blatanly flirting with you (well I think so anyway), but she said that she doesn't date for religious reasons what would you do? (This will be continued in the future maybe!)

It's the end of the week for me and I find it hard to believe that two weeks of University have passed already - I have only just totally figured out my complete timetable and I haven't even had one of my two labs and one of my two tutorials. With the semester system I am sure that exams will be on me before I know it.

Hopefully my Philosophy page will undergo some large remodelling in the next few days - I have some pretty good ideas about it which I think that I need to develop and really back up my argument for fulfillment as the meaning of life with a real discussion of what it means and why it's a better explanation than others and where other explanations fall short of really telling is what is the meaning of life and therefore how can we maximise our time on this planet.

I can't believe how quickly University has got boring. I mean I really shouldn't end up sleeping in both my geography lectures - but who wouldn't when one is about data and how we present data, and the other is about economic models of where industries are based? Get your shit together the Geography department!

Arrrrrrgggghhhhh!!! I have my first essay to write for the year about the link between Plato's psychological theory and his political theory. The question itself provided enough information to write about half of the essay by itself, but hopefully I should be able to write a good essay since I am a second year student and the rest of the class (I suspect) are pathetic first year student who have no idea about how to write a Univeristy Essay.

Lately there have been complaints about the nature of copyright on web-page design and how it is so very easy to copy the hard-work of a web-master in seconds through viewing the source code. While there is a simple answer out there (a javasript code which would disable the view source function) I have yet to find a reliable one. Alternatively a set of guidelines could be worked out to guarantee the originality of a web-site and recgonise the hard work put into it. I think that copying from source codes is morally offensive and that people should not do it because it is basically the direct copying of someone's hard work. However if a link is supplied to a web-help guide which has similar codes to that used on a page then there can be no fault in using a page to enhance your page TO A CERTAIN EXTENT. There are aspects of web-pages which are identifiable as being an integral part of someone's page and that they shouldn't be copied - I would find it a shame if someone had decided to use the link base on my history page (or the essays themselves) because they are the result of my hard work.

Sorry about the long looooooooooooooong entry but I feel as though something should be done to clear up this situation.

Yay! My Australia trip will be confirmed and I will be spending 20 days in Australia during July - yikes I am excited already. Not only do I get to see my best friend Jannatun again, but I also get to spend time with my family in Australia and get to see the Gold Coast.

Everyone tomorrow please put "Jedi" under your religion in the NZ census - I know that Statistics New Zealand say that they won't classify it as a religion - but in my case it's more interesting than writing "no religion" and it will stuff up the statistics of the Census - completely based upon the power of the internet (until those TV companies got there hands on it and made it mainstream... the bastards!!!)

News (as of 3/03/01)

No great triple date..... because of the logistics of it all, at least for this week. A pity but not really that un-expected.

Yay! I told someone how I feel about them! Even though things like this usually have the inevitable result of turning into an incredibly embarrassing moment - I am glad that I did what I did because it's a step in the right direction for me. Stop being shy and bite the bullet! Do something with my life!

3 day weekends ROCK! I am so glad that I managed to avoid having any lectures or tutorials on Fridays because it's nice on a day such as today (being a Saturday) feeling like it's a Sunday but with the nice feeling that I don't have University tomorrow. (Just an 8 hour shift at McDonalds..... but still!!!!)
