Every day I love you (1/5) Dana Scully's apartment 30 December 2000, 6:30 AM The world outside was cold and white, with a clear blue sky and the sun shining brightly. Inside the world was warm and comfortable, the sun shining its rays on the two people that lay entangled in the bed. It was Scully who woke up first. Mulder was still sound asleep, his arms holding her close to him, almost as if he was afraid that he would wake up and find her gone. Scully found that moving was indeed impossible, at least not without waking him up. She didn't mind, it had taken them a long time to get to this point and she certainly wasn't going to complain now. Instead she snuggled even closer against Mulder, sighing happily. It wasn't long before she fell asleep again. About 4 hours later This time Mulder woke up before Scully. He smiled, looking at her. Still sound asleep in his arms, a happy smile on her face. Taking a look at the clock on the bedside table, Mulder realized that no matter how much he hated to wake her from her peaceful sleep; he would have to wake her up. Maggie had invited them over to spend one of the last days of the year at her house, together with the rest of the family (luckily for Mulder, Bill and his family had phoned to tell they wouldn't be able to make it). Mulder and Scully were going, but actually only for part of the day, later that night they were going to take a plane out to Colorado, where they were going to spend the New Year. Jack and Sam had invited them over for the weekend. And if they wanted to be on time at her mother's place, they would have to get up in a little while. "Scully …" He whispered in her ear. No reaction, she only smiled contently, wrapping her arms closer around him. "Scully …" Mulder whispered again, this time a little bit louder. "Mmmm … wazze matter Muller?" She mumbled, half awake, half asleep. Obviously not planning to let go of the nice warm body she was holding on to. "Time to wake up, sunshine." "Do I have to?" She groaned. "Well, unless you want to miss out on your mother's party, yes you have to." "What time is it, Mulder?" "10.30" "Shit!" Suddenly she was wide-awake. Mulder grinned. "Told you so. How late exactly did you say we were going to be there?" "11.30" "Guess we are going to be there a little bit later." He leered at her, flipping her on her back. "No, we won't, not if we get up now. We might be a little bit late, but not that late." "Yes, we will." "No, we won't." "Yes …" Mulder started trailing kisses all over her face, moving from her eyes to her nose, to her mouth. "We will." She squirmed as he tickled her and giggled. "Okay, okay, I give up. We will be late. But you're the one who's going to explain to my mother why we are late!" Mulder already busy elsewhere only mumbled "Okay." And for the moment they forgot all about family and New Year's parties. 2 hours later Maggie Scully Residence "Dana!" Maggie greeted her daughter warmly, giving her a hug. Scully hugged her back and smiled. "Hi, Mom. I brought Mulder with me, I hope that's okay?" A huge smile spread over her face when Maggie saw her daughter had brought Fox. "Of course it is. Fox, welcome, I'm glad you could come!" Before he knew it, she hugged him too. "Merry Christmas, Mrs. Scully." Mulder said, smiling. "Don't make me feel old. You can call me Maggie, or Mom, whatever you want." "Okay, ehm Maggie." "Sorry we're so late, Mom. But Mulder had some …" "Research to do." Mulder finished quickly. "I ehm had to do some research, so it's kind of my fault we're late. I'm sorry." "That's fine dear. Dana already told me you two have been pretty busy lately." Mulder blushed at the endearment Scully's mother used. Scully only grinned and following her mother inside the house, she whispered, making sure her mother didn't hear her "research, huh?" Mulder just grinned. Every day I love you (2/5) A few hours later To Mulder's surprise he was actually having fun at the party. A few of Scully's cousins and aunts were there and so was her younger brother Charlie. Mulder had never had the pleasure of meeting him before. He had been afraid that Charlie would be another Bill, but the opposite was true. Charlie was and looked exactly like his sister. To him it didn't matter whom she was dating, as long as that person made her happy and he could tell Mulder did make her happy. Though Mulder and Scully hadn't actually told them about the recent changes between them, he could easily tell that they were in love and together. Looking at them, while talking to his mother, Charlie said, "How long have they been together, mom? I've never seen Dana look as happy as she does today." Maggie followed his look and frowned a little. "As far as I know they aren't together. Unfortunately." "You're kidding me right?" She shook her head. "No, I am not. I've tried to tell Dana a thousand times that they would be perfect for each other and she even admitted that she loves him, I know he loves her too, but for some reason they haven't found the courage to tell each other, not yet anyway." "Mom?" "Yes?" "Just look at them. Those two have 'we're head over heels in love' written all over them. You might even want to tie them to your couch, before they beam away!" Maggie looked at them again. Fox was saying something to Dana, his eyes shining. She had no idea what he was saying, but obviously something special, because she saw her daughter smiling brightly in response. She had to admit that they looked happier than ever and though almost impossible, they even looked closer than usual. Could it be that her son was right? She remembered Mulder's words when they had arrived. "Sorry we are late, I erm had some … research to do." Remembering the blush on her daughter's face when he had said that, she suddenly wondered what sort of research exactly he had been doing. "Oh my God!" She said, a little louder than she had meant. "Mom?" Charlie and Dana asked at the same time, wondering what had gotten into their mother. Mulder looked at her too, curious and a bit confused. "You are right, Charlie." Maggie said to her son, who only smiled in response. "Right about what?" Scully wanted to know. Turning to her daughter and Fox, Maggie grinned and said "About the two of you being together." Scully's jaw dropped and she looked up at Mulder, not knowing what to say. Mulder had no idea what to say either, so he just shrugged and grinned. "Well?" Maggie asked impatiently, wondering if they were going to confirm it or not. "Well, what?" Scully asked, trying her best to look innocent, as if she had no idea what her mother was talking about. "Are you and Fox together?" "Could you be a little more specific, Mom? I have no idea what you're talking about." Charlie laughed out loud. "Oh come on, Dana. Quit the teasing and just admit it." Mulder grabbed Scully's hand and smiling he said. "You want to tell her, Scully?" She returned the smile and squeezed his hand. "Okay, okay. Yes, Mom. We are." Before both knew it, they found themselves engulfed by the arms of Maggie, who was hugging them in delight. "I'm so happy that you finally realized you were meant for each other." She said. "Oomph, Mom. People do need to breathe you now." Scully tried to wrestle herself out of her mother's embrace. Maggie finally let go, still smiling broadly. "When did this happen? Why didn't you tell me sooner?" She wanted to know. Scully laughed. "Mom, we just came back from Alaska a few days ago. Nothing was going on before that." "Oh that's right, you told me about that. So what happened in Alaska?" Before Scully could say something, Mulder spoke first. "Scully and Carter went for a walk one night. Jack and I went after them, when we heard that there was a bear wandering around in the woods. Luckily we found them before anything happened. I realized I couldn't go on like this, so I told her I loved her and that's the end of the story." Maggie and Charlie looked at them, not knowing what to say. "Bear? And who are Jack and Carter?" Maggie wanted to know. Her daughter shrugged. "Yeah well, you know us, Mom. Nothing ever goes the normal way. There was indeed a bear, but I brought my gun, so I was able to shoot him before he could do anything to us. And Jack and Carter were partners; they work for the air force or something like that. Jack and Sam were sent to the conference, because their partnership wasn't functioning. By the time we left, it was functioning just fine." She grinned, taking a look on her watch at the same time. Realizing that they would have to go or they would be too late for their flight. "Mom, I'm really sorry, but we really have to go. Remember I told you that we'd be going to Colorado for a few days? Sam and Jack invited us over." Maggie nodded. "Yeah, you told me about it. Though I didn't know you were both going there? Neither that you were going to visit friends. I thought it was work-related. But I'm glad it's not, you two deserve some time off. Have a wonderful time, sweetheart." She hugged both of them again and they got up, making their goodbyes to Charlie and the rest of the family, before leaving. Before they did, Maggie made them promise to come over for dinner together when they were back in Washington and after that they really left. Colorado Jack O'Neill's House 30 December, 11:45 PM "Jack?" "Hey." Jack looked up, when Sam stuck her head around the door that lead to the roof of Jack's house. He smiled when he saw her, freshly showered, clad in jeans, one of his hockey jerseys and a coat to keep her warm. She drowned in the t-shirt, but he thought she looked really cute. "What you doing up here?" She wanted to know, sitting down next to him. "Just thinking." He put his arm around her shoulders, pulling her closer to him. She sighed happily and leaned against him. "About what?" "You." "Me?" "You, Me, Us. How happy you make me." He placed a kiss on top of her hair. "You make me happy too. Jack?" "Yeah." He mumbled. "Are we okay?" She asked softly. She knew she had never been happier than the last few days, but she couldn't help wondering what was going to happen when they were going to go back to work in a few days. Relationships between a CO and his 2IC weren't exactly encouraged. And a court martial was the last thing they wanted. Jack seemed to sense what was wrong. "We're going to be fine, Sam. I can't promise it's going to be easy, but we'll get there, one way or another. I love you, never forget that. This, what we have, that is the most important thing. More important than everything else." "More important than our jobs?" He nodded. "Yes, more important than our jobs. I don't think it's going to go that far, but I'll resign if I have to, Sam." "Jack, you can't do that!" She cried out. "Yes I can. I resigned before, Sam. I'll do anything, as long as I have you there with me." "I'll be there." She promised, leaning closer to kiss him. "I love you, Jack." She felt him smile, while he kissed her back. "I love you too." They sat in silence for a while, just enjoying each other's company. Then Sam suddenly remembered why she had come out here in the first place, besides Jack of course. "Dana called. They arrived and were on their way to the hotel now. They're going to look around town tomorrow morning and promised they'd be there in the afternoon." "Good. I'm glad they could come here for the party." "Me too." Sam smiled, looking forward to see their new friends again. End of part 2 Every day I love you (3/5) Next day Jack's place Early in the afternoon A knock on the door and four cheerful voices announced the arrival of the rest of the SG-1 team + Janet and Cassie. They had promised to be there early, to help Jack getting things ready for the party. Sam looked at herself, still dressed in a pair of jeans, Jack's old hockey jersey, barefooted. She hadn't had time to get changed yet, too busy in the kitchen to finish the last things for the party. Oh well, nothing to do about it. It was not like they weren't going to find out anyway. This was not something they would keep a secret from their best friends. She padded through the living room and opened the door for them. "Hey guys, come in." She said cheerfully. They followed her into the apartment, their jaws dropped. Sam didn't seem to notice. "Jack will be right there, he's just taking a shower, before …" Seeing Janet staring at her, she stopped talking. "Ehm, Sam. Why are you wearing Jack's t-shirt?" "Hey guys." Jack's voice interrupted them, before Sam could answer Janet's question. Jack walked into the room, toweling his hair dry. One look at Sam and he realized that there wasn't much left to tell them. "Shower is free, Sam." He grinned. She nodded, giving him a loving smile. For a moment finding herself lost in his eyes. "Thanks." "Guys?" Daniel asked, bringing them back to reality. "Yeah?" Jack asked with a grin. "Care to explain?" "Explain what?" Sam wanted to know. "Why you're walking around dressed in his clothes, in his apartment?" Janet pointed out to her. "Well, I needed something to sleep in didn't I? Jack was nice enough, to lend me one of his." Sam smiled. "Do you mean, you two …?" Daniel stuttered. Cassie was giggling, Janet smiling and Teal'c looking as stoic as ever. Jack smiled. He wrapped his arms around Sam and gave her a quick kiss. "Yes, we are. We finally realized we loved each other and stopped fighting our feelings." "Wow." Janet and Cassie said. "Uh oh …" Daniel murmured, more to himself than to anybody in specific, but the others heard him too. "Uh oh?" Jack asked, alarmed. Knowing Daniel, Jack knew very well that uh oh wasn't a good thing. Not when the words came out of Daniel's mouth. Daniel avoided looking Jack in the eyes, the ground suddenly very interesting to look at. "Daniel?" Jack asked, his voice dangerously calm now. "Yes, Jack?" "Why are we in trouble?" "What do you mean in trouble, I didn't say anything about …" The young man sputtered. "Daniel, for some strange reason the words uh oh coming from your mouth don't sound too reassuring to me. So spill, what did you do?" Daniel didn't look too comfortable and looked for help at Janet and the rest of his team, but they were just waiting for him to spill it out. Defeated he gave up and decided he might just as well tell what exactly he had done this time. "Erm, remember you told me to inform our friends on base about the party you are throwing tonight?" "Yes?" "Well, I don't know who exactly you consider your friends on base, but …" "Daniel?" It was Sam who spoke this time; she had an idea where this was going. "Yeah?" "You didn't?" She looked at him, hoping that she was wrong, but already knowing she wasn't. He only nodded. Sam groaned "Great. We thought we were going to keep this a secret for a while, but now …" Jack looked a bit confused. Looking from Daniel to Sam he asked. "Sam? What are you talking about? What exactly did he do?" "I invited General Hammond too." Daniel blurted out. End of part 3 Every day I love you (4/5) "You did what?" Jack gave Daniel a look of disbelief. "He invited Uncle George too." Cassie offered, trying to be helpful. "Yeah yeah, I heard him. Danny boy, what on earth made you invite General Hammond to the party?" "I …" Daniel was saved by a knock on the door. Sam stifled a sigh and left them in the living room for a moment, to open the door. How on earth did Daniel manage to get them into trouble, even while they weren't of on a mission? Though theoretically speaking, they weren't in trouble yet, not as long as their friends would keep their mouths shut and they could keep their hands of each other for the rest of the day. She was sure the first part would be no problem; the second part however might be a little more difficult. Sighing again, she opened the door and smiled when she saw who were there. "Dana, Mulder! Hi, welcome. Come in!" She motioned them to come in, and then hugged them both to welcome them. "Hey, Sam. How you doing?" Dana greeted her friend, returning the hug. Mulder, letting go of Scully's hand with dislike, did the same. "Good to see you again, Sam. So, where did you leave your better half?" Sam grinned and called out to the living room. "Jack? Look who are here!" Jack stopped scowling at poor Daniel for a moment, to greet his friends. "Mulder, Dana. I'm glad you are here. How are you doing." Looking at their entwined hands he grinned and added. "Still attached to one another I see. Oh, hey, let me introduce you. These are our friends and colleagues. From the left to the right you have Teal'c, Daniel, Janet and Cassie, Janet's daughter. Everyone these are Mulder and Dana. They were also at the conference in Alaska last week." Janet curiously looked at the couple, who were obviously a walking commercial for the saying 'two people truly in love'. She wondered what they had been doing at the conference. Then again, the same could go for Sam and Jack and they had been sent to the conference too. "Hi, ehm … sorry for asking this. But why exactly did they send you to that conference? You don't really look like you needed it …?" Mulder grinned. "We had to speak at the conference." "Ah, I see. But you two are partners?" Scully nodded, smiling. "Yeah we are, we both work for the FBI." "Doesn't the FBI have rules about fraternization between partners?" Janet asked curiously. Mulder nodded. "They do, but we figured that as long as we don't tell, they simply won't know." "Yeah, some people are smart that way." Jack grumbled. Scully seemed to sense his dark mood and Daniel's obvious discomfort. "Something wrong?" She asked. "Uncle Danny invited Uncle George to Jack's party." Cassie piped in. Scully looked at Sam. "And that would be?" "Our boss." Sam sighed. "So much for keeping things a secret." "Hey, guys. I'm really really sorry. But how was I supposed to know that you two would finally come to your senses and get your heads out of the sand? Besides, he doesn't know yet, does he? We promise we will not tell and if you can keep your hands of each other for the evening, he will not have to find out either. I mean, you managed to hide your feelings for four years, so what's one evening?" Daniel said. "I guess so, but it's going to be a long night." Sam sighed, looking at Jack, who could only agree with her. They didn't have much of a choice if they wanted to keep this a secret. "Well, how about getting things ready for the party?" Janet suggested, deciding to get some action into this thing. Obviously it worked, because before she knew it everybody was doing something to help prepare the party. Janet looked at Jack and Sam who were obviously lost in their own world and smiled. She had always hoped that they would eventually realize their feelings for each other and now that they had she was happy for them. Later that night (New Year's Eve) Jack's Apartment The party was in full swing, with people talking and dancing everywhere. Sam and Jack were in the kitchen, sharing a private moment, while they still could. General Hammond hadn't arrived yet, but they were pretty sure he would any moment now. In the living room Mulder and Scully were in each other's arms, dancing. Mulder waiting for the right moment to do what he had been planning to do ever since Alaska. He had actually wanted to do it before coming to Colorado, but somehow the timing had never been right. But he had promised himself to ask her the question, before the new year would arrive. He looked down on Scully, who was leaning against his chest, smiling. He smiled too and for a moment listened to the music that was playing on the background. The words perfectly describing his relationship with Scully. I don't know but I believe That some things are meant to be And that you'll make a better me Every day I love you I never thought that dreams came true But you show me that they do And now that I learn something new Every day I love you He had never thought he would meet someone like her, yet he had. She had walked into his life and turned it upside down. From somebody he thought he couldn't trust, she had become his friend and so much more. So many times already he had wanted to tell her how he felt, that he loved her. But something had always stopped him. The fear of losing her when he did. The idea that she would not return his feelings. But this had meant to be. She had succeeded where everyone and everything else had failed. Cos I believe that destiny is out of our control And you never leave until you love with all your heart and soul It's a touch when I feel bad It's a smile when I get mad All the little things I had Every day I love you If I asked would you say yes Together we're the very best I know that I am trully blessed Every day I love you And I'll give you my best Every day I love you By loving him unconditionally, staying with him where another person would have been gone a long time ago. She was the one that learned him to love again, by every little touch, by one single smile, letting him know that she would always be there. By making dreams come true. "Scully?" He whispered. "Yes?" She looked up at him, smiling brightly. "I …" He let go of her, going down on one knee, still holding her hand. "Oh my God." Janet whispered, when she saw Mulder kneeling down. She hurried into the kitchen, not caring that she might interrupt a special moment. "Jack, Sam, come quick!" They looked up, disturbed. Wondering what the hell was so important, but their curiosity won it in the end and they quickly followed her. "Jack look!" Sam whispered enthusiastically, when she realized what was going on. Jack only grinned. Mulder and Scully didn't seem to realize the crowd that had gathered around them, lost in their own world. And everybody was to busy looking at them, to realize that two other people had come in and joined the party. Scully was looking at Mulder, tears pooling in her eyes, realizing what he was about to do. "Mulder …" She whispered. He stopped her. "Scully, so much has happened through the years and every time I thought I had gone too far, when I thought that you would really leave this time, you didn't. You stayed by me, supported me, learned me what it was to love again. You brought feeling back into my life, you're my friend, my touchstone. I wouldn't know what I would do without you, I love you so much. Will you … will you marry me?" She was crying now, but through her tears she could still see Mulder, kneeling down on one knee, holding up a small box, asking her to be his. Laughing through her tears she said the only thing she could say "Yes." The moment she said it, Mulder put the ring on her finger and pulled her in his arms. He touched her face, smiling tenderly. "I love you, Scully." She looked up at him, her eyes shining brightly. "I love you too." With that said he leaned down to kiss her. Sealing the promise they had just made each other. Everybody was clapping and cheering, except the two men still standing at the door. George Hammond wondered who they were, the friend he had brought only stood there with his jaw dropped. "Walter, you okay?" Walter Skinner, standing next to him, nodded faintly. "Yeah, I think so. Just wondering what the hell is going on here." "You know those two?" "I'd say so, they're two of my agents." "Lucky you. I'm glad I'm not in your shoes in that case." "Agent Mulder, Agent Scully? Care to tell me what the hell is going on here?" Skinner had stepped forward, standing not far away from his two agents right now. A deep silence fell and they both turned around, when they heard the familiar voice. End of part 4 Every day I love you (5/5) "Sir?" Mulder stammered, his arm still wrapped around Scully. "Agent Mulder." Skinner nodded sternly, his arms crossed, eyebrows raised, waiting for an explanation. "Care to explain?" Mulder and Scully looked at each other, realizing that there wasn't much left to keep a secret, they might as well give him the truth now and hope for the best. However, before Mulder could say anything, Scully spoke first. "We are getting married, Sir." "That much I heard." Skinner said dryly. "What I'm more interested in is, when did this happen?" "Alaska." They said in unison. "The conference I send you to?" "Yeah well you did send us there, because we got along so well." Mulder quipped. Scully decided to be a little bit more tactic. "Sir, I know what you're thinking, but …" "Right now, Agent Scully, I'm not thinking all that much. I'm planning on enjoying this party and we'll discuss this after the weekend in my office." With that he turned around, before he walked away he turned around one more time and with a grin on his face he said "Oh and agents?" "Yes, Sir?" They said in unison. "Congratulations on your engagement. About damn time." Leaving them behind stunned and wondering what the hell was going to happen after the weekend he made his way to the table with food and drinks where George Hammond was standing, talking to Daniel. Hammond introduced them, then asked his friend. "What you going to do with them, Walter?" Taking a sip of his drink, Skinner shrugged. "To tell you the truth, I have no idea. If it's up to me I will do everything I can to keep them together, but I don't know what the Board will do once they find out about this." He sighed, he was really happy for his agents. Lord knows they both deserved some happiness after everything they'd been through, but they did bring him in a pretty difficult position. "Feeling a headache coming up, Walter?" Hammond grinned. "Yeah, funny. You're lucky that you're not the one who has to deal with something like this. Personally I'm really happy for them and like I just told them, it is about damn time, but work related it's a whole different story." He rubbed his temple, thinking what he was going to do about this 'situation'. "I'll see if O'Neill has some Tylenol in his medicine cabinet." Hammond headed for the kitchen, stopping dead in his tracks, at the scene in front of him. His friend had followed him and was trying his hardest not to burst out laughing. Jack O'Neill and Samantha Carter, in each other's arms, being much closer than co-workers were supposed to do. They were so wrapped up in one another, that they didn't hear him coming in, until he cleared his throat. When they did, they guiltily jumped apart. Both started talking at the same time, to explain what was going on. Then stopped again, realizing that there wasn't really that much to explain, seeing the circumstances he had just caught them in. Despite the situation and the headache he too felt coming up, George Hammond smiled. He thought, not saying that out loud. He realized that this was something they were going to have to talk about in the new year, but right now, as their friend, he was truly happy for them. The headache only came from thinking how he was going to keep SG-1 together, now that those two were involved. "I am glad to see that the money on the conference wasn't wasted by you." "Sir …" Samantha started. He stopped her. "Not tonight, Carter. We'll discuss this in the new year. Why don't we just forget I'm your boss and you're colleagues for the night?" They nodded, figuring that if he wasn't really angry, things couldn't be that bad when they would return to the office. "Thank you, Sir." Jack smiled, putting his arm around Sam's shoulder. "You're welcome, now could you please tell me where we can find some Tylenol? We could really use some right now …" End of part 5
