Her knuckles turned white as she clutched the script tightly. Today was the day they were shooting their first scene. She fanned herself with her hand, trying to calm the butterflies, which were doing somersaults in her stomach. James had arrived early to rehearse the lines with her, but it didn't help that he was making no mistakes. She had done this scene before, but that was with her mom, in the basement of her house back in Ohio.
" I'll be right here. I love this movie. This won the Oscar didn't it?" Katie said mimicking E.T. He snickered slightly before reaching for an imaginary remote control and pressing it. "Ghandi. Spielberg was robbed. This was before he outgrew his Peter Pan syndrome." She frowned. "But Ghandi? I mean why give an Oscar to a movie you can't even sit through?" "Thank you" She got up and pretended to put on her shoes, her eyes still on the black box, which was supposed to be the TV. "New do?" "Yeah. She likes big hair." "Must weigh a lot. How does she walk upright?" He laughed. "Where are you going?""Home." "Spend the night." "I can't.""Come on you always spend the night." "Not tonight." "Why not?" He asked incredulously. "I just don't think it's a good idea for me to sleep over anymore, you know?" He sat up quickly and placed something from his empty hand onto the desk. "No, I don't know. C'mon, You've been sleeping over since you were seven. It's Saturday night.""Things change Dawson. Evolve." "What are you talking about?" He gave her his most confused look. She bit back her laughter and pretended to put on a jean jacket. "Sleeping in the same bed was fine when we were kids, but we're fifteen now." "Yeah.""We start high school Monday?" "Yeah." She blushed as she tapped her chest lightly. "And I have breasts!"
He looked at her surprisingly and shouted "What?!" Her cheeks turned to a darker shade as she pointed to him. "And you have genitalia!" "I've always had genitalia." "But there's more of it." She could've sworn that she saw him grin, but it was quickly replaced by an embarrassed look. "How do you know?" "Long fingers…I gotta go." She moved towards the open window to leave. He reached for her. "Whoa Jo, don't hit and run." She paused and turned around to look at him. "C'mon, explain yourself." "I just think our emerging hormones are destined to alter our relationship and I'm trying to limit the fallout." He got off the bed with his arms crossed, smiling. "Your emerging hormones aren't developing a thang for me, are they?" "A thing?" said Katie, her mouth dropping open. She touched her forehead sarcastically like she had to think about it.
"No, I'm not getting a thing for you Dawson. I've known you too long. I've seen you burp, barf, pick your nose, scratch your butt. I don't think I'm getting a thing for you." "So what's the problem?" "We're changing and we have to adjust or else the male/female thing will get in the way." He sat down on the bed again. "What's with this When Harry met 80's crap. It doesn't apply to us, we transcend it. "And how do we do that?" "By going to sleep. I'm tired." He lay down on the bed. "That's avoidance." "No, it's proof. Proof that we can still remain friends, despite any mounting sexual theoretics." She paused for a minute. "I don't think it works that way Dawson."
"Come on, don't get female on me Joey. I don't want to have to start calling you Josephine." She smiled. "Josephine this!" She leapt onto the bed, with her script still in her hand, attacking him with it. They tickled and punched each other lightly until he had the upper hand. She noticed that her script was laying on the floor while he had her hands pinned above her head, his body slightly on top of her's. Her eyes strayed to the flesh that was peeping through, showing her smooth stomach, while she kicked herself for not wearing a longer shirt. She felt his stare and shifted uncomfortably, yearning for some breathing space. "Can we take a break? I need a drink." She whispered.
"Sure." He released her hands and got up slowly before combing through his hair with his fingers nervously. She jumped up quickly and realized that they were on the set by themselves, that everyone else was on another set. She didn't know what to make of what had just happened. Was it nothing? It was certainly very awkward and intimate, but then again maybe it's just her, overreacting. She walked around the studio until she reached a table in the dark corner, displayed with a whole variety of drinks. She reached for a can of Diet Coke and tried to open it, but it refused to budge. "Arrgh!" She muttered under her breath.
"Here, let me do it." She turned around and met a pair of smiling blue eyes. "You're early. I thought you didn't have to be here until later." She dropped her gaze to the ground, not able to meet his eyes, afraid that he would see how flustered she was. "Well, hello to you too." Josh opened the can easily and handed it back to her. "Sorry. I'm just having a bad day." "Got the jitters?"
"No. I mean look at these lines! Who on earth talks like this? I certainly didn't in High school. Oh wait! I bet you did." She teased lightly. "Ha ha! No. These words are pretty hard. Genitalia. I never called it that! Oh wait, I bet you did back in your catholic High school." He said nudging her. "Shut up." "Feisty, I like that in a girl." "Don't make fun of my school. What's wrong with going to a religious school? So what if there were no guys there? Us women can survive without you all, you know?" "Yes, hence the invention of the dick strap"
"What?" said Katie, her mouth hanging open. "You don't know what those are? They're these straps-" "I don't know! Stop! Please!" She said plugging her ears with her finger, humming the national anthem. "Katie honey, I'm just trying to teach you a couple of things which I am sure they didn't teach you in that RELIGIOUS school of yours." He said trying to pry her hand away from her ears. "Are all guys like this?" "Like what?" "Like...." "Perverts? Horny?" "Oh Forget it!" said Katie wearily.
"Katie, we need you in wardrobe." The production assistant called out. Josh eyed her in her little red tank top as her chest rose and fell. She brushed away a loose strand of hair and tugged at the hem of her shirt, nervously. She breathed in deeply and followed the crew who was already walking.
"Hey." He called out. She paused, contemplating whether to turn around or to keep on walking. Why was walking so hard? She lectured herself mercilessly as she told herself to place one foot after the other, to keep on going. She felt his arms wrap around her waist, just above her jeans, as he hugged her from behind. His hair was tickling her neck, sending shivers up her spine. She slowly ran her hands around his arm, enjoying how protected he made her feel.
"Thought you could use one today." He whispered. Her lips curled upwards. "Thank you." "Good luck." He planted a kiss on her head and added, "and don't get your panties in a bunch!" with that he patted her behind playfully. She scowled and punched him on the arm lightly. "I have to go now." She said, noticing the crewmember who was waiting for her impatiently. "I'll see ya later." "I'll be in my trailer! Ta-ta!" She laughed as he skipped away merrily, bumping into a table, causing paper cups to fall on the floor. She smiled and found herself skipping too.
"Okay people settle. We're rolling and action." The director, Steve Miner, shouted from a seat behind the camera. Kevin Williamson sat next to him with a headphone, watching the scene from a small screen. The director gestured towards the yellow cab. The door opened and Michelle walked out. A crewmember held a fan from a distance, causing her hair and dress with blow in the wind. "More." The director whispered, gesturing wildly. The speed of the fan increased and Michelle's dress fluttered about wildly.
"If I didn't know better, I would say that you are trying to take a peek at her goodies." Josh whispered from behind. Katie and James chuckled at Josh's comment. The three of them had been hanging around the set, waiting for their first scene with Michelle. Kevin pointed towards the crafts service table, silently telling the trio to go find something else to keep them busy. Josh pouted and sulked, limping towards the table like a wounded dog. Then in one swift move he pulled his pants and boxer down, displaying his white butt to everyone. Everyone's mouths dropped open as they watched him.
"You can look at my goodies." He yelled as he shook his ass left and right. The soundstage erupted with laughter and hoots as the crew cheered him on. Kevin shook his head, unable to hide his grin. Every show had a prankster and he already had an idea who it was on their show.
"Alright everyone. That's a wrap!" Steve Miner shouted in his booming director voice. Carts and racks were wheeled off the soundstage quickly, everyone wanting to go home and rest. The four stars of the drama show trekked over to the makeup trailer where their stylist did them a service by removing their makeup for them. Within fifteen minutes they all met up at the lot of the studio, dressed in the clothes they had arrived in earlier. As people passed by, they all gave Josh at pat on the back. Katie watched with amusement at how he fitted in so quickly. "You have balls, waving that white ass of yours." Michelle said teasingly.
"It's white? Wait, do I need a tan?" He asked innocently, his hands dangerously close to the waistband of his jeans. Katie quickly swatted his hands away, not yet ready for a repeat performance. "You definitely made my day. I don't think that I've ever seen a person moon around ninety people at one time." James said, hopping onto the hood of his car. "James, don't encourage him." Katie warned him lightly. "What? Don't tell me that you didn't find it funny. I thought it was fucking hilarious!" James added as he whistled for Josh's Rhodesian Ridgeback , Shumba. "I'm not denying that it wasn't funny, but like Michelle stated earlier, it's white. He shouldn't be allowed to flash that stuff around until it's a decent shade." Katie quipped as she rubbed the canine behind the ears.
"Call me ugly, call me a pig, but don't insult my ass." Josh dropped to his knee, clutching his chest then Katie's right leg. "At least I've got one." He added quickly before dodging her light slap of hand. The four friends burst out laughing once again, realizing that work was never meant to be this much fun.
