From the start, Gambit was a mystery. No one from the X-Men knows who his parents were, and Gambit sure doesn't talk about it. Gambit basically started life in Fagan's Mob. There, he grew up for the time being. They were called Orphans of the Streets, run by the ecommumicated. From there, he ran away and becoming an orphan. It was hard living on his own. He had to eat scraps of already eaten food out of garbages. He watched some of the young members of the Thieve's Guild pick pocketing. This inspired Gambit to live easily and to stop eating junk out of the garbage.

Remy began a life of crime, pick-pocketing. He was extremely well for being his age, having such great agility, but not good enough.

Remy pick-pocketed Jean-Luc LeBeau and was caught. Jean-Luc decided to take the boy in and show him how to be the best theif he could. He adopted him and began to teach Remy the skills and ways of his Guild. He started Remy off with little jobs, like stealing jewlery from crimelords. One time on his daily scedule, Remy was given a job to steal from Monsieur Mastiff (a top crimelord), and was caught. This was the night Remy learned about improvising. He told Mastiff that if he lets them live then he will help him later. 20 years later he saved his daughter. Jean also tought him about the Assassin's Guild, which was their rival. With a great teacher and his agility, it was easy for Remy to learn the moves of the Guild. Remy didn't have a lot of friends, but then he soon met Belladonna.

Remy wanted Belladonna in his life, but Bel was the daughter of the Assassins Guild. The two children were too young to know that their friendship was forbidden, so Remy began a close friendship with Bel and when The Theive's Guild found out, it was already to late. By the time Remy and Bel hit their teens, they fell completely in love. Remy pumped Bel for infomation on the Assassins Guild, but he really did love her.

At the age of seventeen, Remy had to take a test to see if he deserved to be in the Thieve's Guild. This test was called Tract of Passage. He had to steal the Cheating Star from Geneviere Darceneaux, daughter to a jewel thief, and current holder of the gem. Henri guided him on his journey for the Star. Remy made the young woman fall in love with him, thus making him able to steal the pendant. Before he could leave he encountered Sabretooth, who had been hired to also to get the gem. Sabretooth got beat by Gambit at the first battle, but Sabretooth said that Gambit was too outforward and it was easy to find him. Sabretooth got the better of Remy and captured both Henri and Geneviere, hanging them from one of the spires of Notre Dame. Remy was forced to make a choice... He could either save Henri or Geneviere.

He had to choose between a family member or a lover. He made his choice by throwing the diamond to Sabretooth and grabbing Henri. In time, he looks back and decided that he made the wrong choice.

Remy returned to New Orleans, only to find out that the Assassins Guild and the Theives Guild had formed to make a pack. They signed a peace treaty so that they all can live in peace. At this, Remy proposed to Belladonna and they were married at once, not knowing that this was Jean-Luc's plan all along. He set the marriage up to create peace. Unfortunately, Belladonna's brother, Julien, did not believe in the treaty and challenged Remy to a fight. One thing lead to another and Remy killed him, using his mutant abilities.

After the Theives Guild heard this, they banished Remy out of the city in order to keep the treaty. Gambit had to leave the city he grew up in for a second time. Remy traveled over the ocean, and made a slow path through Europe into the far East. It was during this time Gambit was hired by a certain Nathanial Essex, Mr. Sinister, to do various odd jobs. His final Job for Sinister would end up being his undoing, Gambit was hired to recruit the Marauders, and he led them to the Morlock tunnels, thus becoming involved in the Mutant Massacre.

In one such case Gambit met the X-Man named Ororo Munroe, a weather controlling mutant codenamed Storm, who had been reduced to her child state by The Nanny. It turned out, the man Gambit was robbing was the Shadow King, who was after Storm. Gambit saved Storm from the Shadow King and she took him back to the X-Men's mansion in New York.

Upon their return, the X-Men went to Muir Island to defeat the Shadow King. Gambit became a team member of the X-Men, but he was not fully trusted most of the time because of his unknown past, and Bishop's accusations that he was the X-Traitor. Gambit himself never seemed to come to terms with his past, and did not reveal it to the X-Men willingly. However, his teammates found out about his past dealings with Sinister, through " The Trial of Gambit" where it was revealed through "Eric the Red," or Magneto. His teammates, and Rogue left him in Antarctica, in the ice and cold. They later try to get him out. Gambit made it out of Antarctica with the help of Mary Purcell, a green spirit who Magneto was holding captive at his Antarctic base. Gambit released Mary from her holding cell and she took over his body, providing him with some of the strength he needed to survive.

After leaving the base, Gambit encountered Courier aka Jacob Gavin Jr., whom he made a bargain with New Son that would also help him escape Antarctica. Gambit was in a bad frame of mind after being left by his love, Rogue. New Son had a dream to start a better world. He made Remy believe that by helping him he would be helping the whole human race. New Son's plan was to create an entire new world. He would make it a paradise and move everyone to this world. Remy helped by saving Jake in the Savage Land. Once he made some more little helpings in New Son's sceme, Remy started to notice the craziness in New Son's plan. Remy found out that New Son turned out to be Remy LeBeau from another world, only New Son's powers were way stronger compared to Gambit's. This reason being was that in his world, his powers blew out of porportion which created an exact replica of a atom bomb on one that can hit his whole world. New Son decided to kill Remy to prevent that happening to Earth. Remy blew away New Son in a explosive battle.

After that Gambit returns to the X-Men, in time to join the team to help them search for the missing Charles Xavier. It has been revealed that Bella Donna's presumption of death was a fake.
