"The Dream"

It was a dream like no other dream. Bright and vivid colors made it hard to forget. How strange and odd it seemed then, but now it seems to make perfect sense. A great deal was learned after that particular dream. It opened my eyes, and I can say I am all the wiser for having had it.

The dream came one night during a time when I had many decisions to make. It was extremely hard for me to fall asleep that night. Worry plagued my mind, and I did not know what to do about it. I tried to clear my head of all the decisions. Finally, I fell asleep.

"Where am I?" I asked looking around at the gray darkness that surrounded me.

A figure appeared out of the haze. It was dressed in a long black robe looking like the Grim Reaper himself. "Where do you think you are?"

"If I knew, I wouldn’t ask," I responded while still observing my surroundings.

"Of course you need light." Within a few moments there was light.

I found myself standing in the middle of a grassy green field. Across from where I stood was a platform. Shining brightly overhead was the sun, which hurt my sore eyes.

"Come," the robed being said. He walked across the grass with the black robe trailing behind. When we reached the platform, he turned and said, "What do you choose, chess or life?"

I laughed, "Chess or…"

He broke in, "Chess it is." With a wave of his hand, a black and white checkered board appeared. "What color do you wish to be? Remember, white goes first."

"I like going first, so I choose to be white."

"Positive? White it is. Take your place," he said as other chess "pieces" arrived.

I was shocked; there were real live people on the board. "What is this?"

"Human chess. Be careful, one wrong move and you risk a life. Your move."

I was quite skeptical and gave the obvious first move, "Queen’s rook pawn two spaces."

"An easy move," he said as the other side made their move. "This is a real battlefield. The other moves will not seen quite so easy."

I rolled my eyes and shrugged it off, "What would you have me do, make out a battle plan. The robed figure turned away."

A few moments later, I made a terrible mistake. "King’s bishop three forward," I said. The bishop looked back worried as he moved forward as he was bid.

The turn went to the other side of the board. All of sudden, the black knight attacked and killed the bishop. It was a bloody and gruesome sight. "Ah, the bishop is dead. Who will be next?" the robed one said.

My next moves were very bad. I could not redeem myself of my past follies. The black "pieces" crowded in on the white ones. Blood covered the black and white tiles. Fear struck me as I watched the advance of the castled king and rook. "Surrender, queen," the rook said as he began to bring down his sword.

I closed my eyes and screamed, "No!!!!"

When I opened my eyes again, I found myself in my bedroom at home. It was all a dream. I knew what I had to do. I needed to make some soft of a "battle plan" to help decide what choice I was to make. The dream taught me a very valuable lesson; wrong choices have their consequences, so choose carefully.
