Mike: It's just really hard...wanting you and knowing that I can't have you.
Carrie: I couldn't concentrate after our fight. I just wanted to find you and I wanted to make it better.
Carrie: Mike, I know I'm in a commitment with Austin, but am I really being faithful to him
if I have you in my heart? Because no matter what I do, I can't stop thinking about you.
Mike: (whispering) I can't stop thinking about you, either.
Mike leans toward Carrie, and their lips touch hesitantly. Mike touches Carrie's face softly, and when he touches
her, their kiss deepens. They lose themselves in each other's arms as it begins to rain harder.
Mike and Carrie continue to kiss, but Carrie pulls away quickly. She stares up into Mike's eyes.
Carrie: Mike...What have I done??
She runs away, with Mike in hot pursuit.
Mike catches up with Carrie.
Mike: Carrie, Carrie...Wait!
Carrie: Mike, I promised myself that I wouldn't let that happen again. What is wrong with me?!
Mike: It's nothing. There's nothing wrong with you.
It's my fault. I'm sorry...
Carrie: No, Mike, I won't let you blame yourself for this. I'm just as responsible.
Carrie: Yes, and we can't deny our feelings this time, Mike. We can't just push it aside and pretend it
didn't happen. Because it did, and I don't know what to do.
Mike: I don't know either. I don't know...
In Cheatin' Heart...Mike hands Carrie a towel...
Mike: I ordered us some hot tea.
Carrie: Thank you.
Mike: You want to go home?
Carrie: I want us to talk about this.
Mike: Yeah, you're right. We've got to deal with this.
Carrie: I don't understand what is happening to me, because one minute I'm overwhelmed with guilt and then
another minute, I want you to hold me in your arms.
Carrie: It's the truth, Mike. And I don't know what to do about it.
Mike: Okay. Then what you have to do is to take a step back and look at your feelings objectively.
Carrie: (smiling) What I'm feeling is guilt, because I love Austin...I don't want to hurt him.
Mike: Okay...Then you can't. He's a great guy.
Carrie: And he believes that I love him. And I do, but I have these feelings for you.
Mike: Well, I have...I have these feelings for you, too. But I guess we've both got to put our feelings
aside and just forget about them. And do what's right for the people in our lives who we care about. Because we're not
meant to be.
Carrie: You tried to stop me from marrying Austin. Now I understand. You cared for me even then, didn't you?
Carrie: All this time, you didn't say anything to me. You kept it hidden. Why?
Mike: Because I could see how much you loved Austin and that you two were meant to be together. And you did
the right thing by marrying him.
Carrie: Did I?
Mike: No, no...You didn't make a mistake marrying Austin. You love him. He's a good man, he's a good husband.
Carrie: Then why do I have these feelings for you, Mike?
Mike: Listen, you and Austin are just going through some very, very rough times right now. I mean everything
that's happened with Sami and her wanting you to take guardianship of Will...and...
Carrie: We've been through rough time before, though and we got through them.
Mike: Yeah, but sometimes you just wanted to give up, right?
Carrie: Yeah, and I'd go to talk to you and you'd encourage me and make me feel better. Even then, I'd turn
to you, Mike. Does that mean something is lacking in my relationship with Austin?
Mike: (pausing) Absolutely not. No one person can be everything to another person. I mean, everybody
has their faults, but that doesn't stop you from loving that one person.
Carrie: No. I just feel terrible because Austin trusts me and he believes me...And if he ever found out about
Mike: He can't...And it can never happen again, either.
Carrie: What if it does, Mike? We work together every day at the hospital. Maybe I should quit my job.
Mike: (begins to say no, but stops) If that's going to make it easier for you.
Carrie: But, I love my job. How would I explain that to Austin? (she takes a deep breath) I don't
know what to do.
Mike: Well, if I can be honest here for a second, I don't want you to quit your job (he smiles at her).
You're too good, and we work too well together and I don't want to lose that. And I don't want to lose our friendship
Carrie: Neither do I.
Mike: Okay, we can do this. I mean, I have my relationship with Ali and she makes me happy. I want our
relationship to grow.
Carrie: You really care for Ali?
Carrie: I needed to hear that.
Mike: I wish things were different...but they're not. Anything between us would lead to pain and heartache.
Carrie: (nodding) I agree and I couldn't live with myself.
Mike: Neither could I. So, we need to make a pact (he reaches over to take her hand). We have to put
our feelings for each other aside and we have to respect each other's right to live their own life. That's the only way.
Carrie: I know.
Mike: We can do this, Carrie. We can do this.
Carrie: I hope so.
