SPEAKING IN TONGUES
What is speaking in tongues that people are talking about? A question that I received on my guest book about tongues caused me to think that maybe I should write about the subject. If you are someone who is wondering about tongues maybe this article will answer your questions.

We must back up here and look at God. What is God? God is a Spirit.
John 4:24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

With all the talk now about  evil spirits, it seems that most people understand when you say someone has a demon. You would expect that person to do evil deeds. Why would this be? Because the spirit within them is evil. God being a perfectly good Spirit, you would see good actions from someone filled with His Spirit.
Romans 8:13 For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.
Romans 8:14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
Romans 8:15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.

But what does this have to do with tongues? Well the Bible says when we receive the Holy Spirit (The Spirit of God, or the Holy Ghost),we will speak in a language we never learned. How can we do this? The power of God causes us to speak.
Acts 2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

In the Bible Jewish believers were shocked that the gentiles (non-Jews)received the Holy Ghost (It came inside of them to dwell)
Acts 10:45 And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost.

How did they know that they received the Holy Ghost? We find the answer in the next verse.
Acts 10:46 For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter,

Millions around the world have had this experience. God has given the promise to all who want to serve Him. In some countries people sometimes speak in English and don’t know English. This is tongues to them
Acts 2:39 For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.

There are many misunderstandings about tongues, because there are different kinds of tongues. The same Spirit of God works them all, but in different ways. Let’s look at the different ways God works.
Corinthians I 12:4 Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.
5 And there are
differences of administrations, but the same Lord.
6 And there are
diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all.

1. Speaking in tongues when we are first filled with the Spirit. When God comes into us for the first time, we speak in a language that we never learned. This is when God speaks through us. Some feel that this happens when we believe on Christ, without tongues. We must not go by what we feel but by what the Bible says.
Acts 8:12 But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.
Acts 8:14 Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John:
Acts 8:15 Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost:
Acts 8:16 (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.)
Acts 8:17 Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost.
Acts 8:18 And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles' hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money,
Acts 8:19 Saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay hands, he may receive the Holy Ghost.

Notice that they were believers before they received the Holy Ghost.

What did Simon see?

2. The gift of “divers” tongues. This is one of the gifts of the spirit given to the church. Not everyone in the church has this gift.
Divers means different tongues. I  received this gift many years after I had received the Holy Spirit. As I listened to myself speak I could hear the languages change form one to another. Apostle Paul spoke of this gift when he said “Do all speak in tongues”.
Corinthians I 12:8 For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;
Corinthians I 12:10 To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:

3. The message in tongues, This happens when God gives someone who has the gift of divers tongues a message for the church. the person with the message is not to speak it out in tongues if someone with the gift of interpretation (another of the Spiritual gifts) is not present in the service.
Corinthians I 14:27 If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret.
Corinthians I 14:28 But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God.

4. Singing in tongues this is when God gives both the tongues and a melody with it.
Corinthians I 14:14 For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful.
Corinthians I 14:15 What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.

Is speaking in tongues the only sign that the Holy Spirit is working in us? No, there is so much that the Spirit of God does for us that it would take quite some time to try to tell it all. The fruit of the Spirit alone is one great thing the Spirit brings us. We can be lead by the Spirit all day long. The Spirit gives us power to live for God. The Spirit gives us a new heart, (the desire to serve God). And the list goes on and on.
Corinthians II 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

Why wouldn’t anyone want the Holy Ghost(Holy Spirit)?
I don’t know

Are you filled with the Holy Spirit? Are you sure? Many people have been taught that a person is filled with the Spirit when they believe and accept Christ. Let us look at what the Bible the source of truth has to say.

Acts 8:15 Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost:
16 (
For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.)
17 Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost.

These people believed, repented and were baptized, but had not as yet received the Holy Spirit.
