 Children of the Long Days
Mother, Wise Woman, Goddess, Huntress; Moon Children are associated with every aspect of the Feminine and female power. This sign begins with the summer Solstice, the longest day of the year and marks the foundation of personal power, fertility, the family and the mystery of womankind.
Those born under the Cardinal, water sign of Cancer, have an archetypal link to the ancient fertility Godess, the Great Mother who protected the young, buried the dead, determined the growth of plants and animals and was independent of any male. Her's was the power to nurture and protect and she was the pillar around which all life revolved. Her heritage is most often expressed in the private and personal realm of home and family. 
There are few things more important to Cancer, than their personal domain, the children of their body and mind, and being at the centre of things. Protective and insular, Cancers can respond to an ever shifting variety of needs and priorities. They work best when they are their own authority, or are left alone to do things their own way. Cancers, like the Moon go through many changes, yet remain the same. They understand cycles of growth and generation, and like all water signs are secretive and deeply sensitive. A Cancer can present an impeturbable face to everything, can shut out anything which threatens her security or is beyond her frame of reference. 
Like the Goddess, Artemis, she will defend her own and does not forgive trespassers easily. However, she is the most giving, confident and comforting of signs when her sympathies are touched. Perhaps the key to Cancer is her emotional equilibrium and comfort zone, for when she feels at home, emotionally centered, and secure, no one can be more understanding, generous and loving. 
On July 20th we will leave the cool, protective shelter of Cancer and enter the royal enclave of Leo. Confident, regal, expressive and creative, the Lion's roar is much louder than his bite, but he is unlikely to let anyone upstage him.
