James Kenneth Weatherlight was born in Toronto, Canada on July 2nd, 2342. His mother, Mary, Rachel Weatherlight was a Starfleet Academy Instructor, currently on a leave of absence. His brother, Stephen David Weatherlight, currently is the captain of the USS Trinculo. His father is a dockworker at the Utopia Planetia Shipyards.
James has always dreamed of being in Starfleet, since most of his ancestors were Starfleet officers themselves. He took it upon himself to continue tradition and join Starfleet when he graduated from High School.
When he graduated in 2360, he wasted no time in applying in the academy and passed the entry exam with flying colours. His field of study was Auxiliary Craft and he wasted no time in passing his course. He was also labelled a Pistol Marksman when he was one of the many who scored honours in his basic firearms training course. He eventually graduated from Starfleet Academy in 2364, but to a shock to all his instructors, who strongly recommended to him to pursue officer training, he decided to start at Crewman and work his way up from there.
His first posting was the USS Melbourne in 2365 after taking a year off. He was posted as a shuttle pilot and earned the respect of his fellow crewmates. His style of flying shuttles amazed most of the experienced shuttle pilots. Even more surprising is that he can fight in a shuttle like a fighter, and that was proven in holodeck simulations.
He would get that chance in 2366 when the Melbourne was one of the 40 ships to defend Earth from the Borg at Wolf 359. Seeing as an opportunity to see what he can do, James gave a suggestion that although the weapons on the shuttle might not prove a match for the Borg, the shuttles would act like tiny insects pinching the Borg. Once then, his squad will split up and surrounding the starship, with each shuttle firing on the enemy while moving. However, his style of flying and this tactic was sent to a few Starfleet captains, including Jean-Luc Picard. James led a squadron to fight the Borg, only to have every last one of his teammates killed before they could land a shot. James was the only survivor of his squad as his shuttle drifted helplessly in space, only to be picked up by the Phoenix a day later.
James was promoted to Petty Officer 2nd class for his bravery at the battle. Although it left a bad taste in his mouth, there was nothing he could’ve done to prevent the loss. James was then posted on the Nebula Class, USS-Yamato where he redeemed himself during the Klingon Offensive.
When the Dominion War took form, James preformed the same manoeuvres he used on the Borg at Wolf 359 during defence and offence situations. That earned him a promotion to Petty Officer 1st class and command of the shuttle squadron. Starfleet dubbed the manoeuvre the “Weatherlight Manoeuvre.” For the duration of the war, James rarely used the manoeuvre in case the Dominion was aware of his flying style. On the final days of the war, James preformed the Weatherlight Manoeuvre once again on the advance of Cardassia and his squadron escaped the battle without a single loss.
James was promoted to Chief Petty Officer and he was reassigned to the USS Explorer, attached to the well-famed Bravo Fleet. James, eager to try the Delta Flyer, got his chance when a Cardassian, Gul Camlet abducted a member of Admiral Claire’s staff. James took part on the rescue mission, only that Camlet’s own forces were waiting for him and the Explorer, but with help from James’ brother Stephen, Starfleet dispatched a small fleet, including the Enterprise-E to the planet, Freya II, to deal with Camlet’s forces. He was promoted to Chief Warrant Officer II on that basis.
James then got tired of Starfleet. He resigned his commission, but not before he returned to the academy and took training on the new Agro class runabout. After three months of relaxation, he got word that the Federation is at war with a new force called the Carnum. James wasted no time in getting himself commissioned in Starfleet again. He was selected to serve the USS Sentinel a ship that has in the past, survived many encounters and has recorded a kill of a Gorn Dreadnought. Serving in the Delta Quadrant, James knew that they would need someone with some experience with the Borg.
James is a war veteran. He prefers to fly combatable shuttles, mainly a Delta Flyer. He is also a hardcore supporter to the Prime Directive, and will not allow anyone on his ship, not even his commanding officer, to violate it.
