Mission #18 - At The Mountains of Madness, Part 2

The Great City On [[Arkham. Polar region]] Kurdin: Does anyone else hear a whistling sound? Kelly: No... Dre: No... Sparks: No... Cassandra: Whistle? I like to whistle *she begins to whistle a string of random notes* Jazz: I hear it as well... any clues as to what it is? *** Dre: It could be the wind; it seems to be picking up a bit. Jazz: May be. Lets get a move on times a wastin * The fivesome set off. Cassandra seemed at peace in the cold climate, whistling as she walked along. * Dre: * Looking to Cassandra * Hey, I know that tune * she joins in (The theme tune to the great escape) * the two women walk just behind Kurdin and Jazz * Jazz: * Looking at a tricorder * according to these read outs, the shuttle is inside the city. From Harpers original reading on the bridge, they crashed over there * points * Kurdin: They have been moved? Jazz: Seems that way. Lets just hope the locals are friendly Kelly: From what the Arkhamites tell us, they were not so friendly in the past Dre: And being trapped in here probably hasn't changed their mood any. If anything it most likely has made them a little. Cranky. Off Tag ==/\== Ensign U'nela Dre (Trill) Head Nurse. USS Destiny Sorting the Deck ON: *after Venka gets done with talking to Harper she continues her search about the mountain ranges, seeing a couple of people down there, she bends forward some and finds out its just the away team. She shivers slightly just by seeing the snow, knowing it has to be cold* Vishee: Something wrong Lt? Venka: No not really, just that I know its cold out there. Vishee:ahh I see. *continues back to her work* Venka:*continues monitoring the mountain and its area. Finally figuring out how to bring it closer inside the mountain she hears a slight sound. Not knowing what it is she turns the sound up higher. It sounds like something moving, like a slug?...she blinks rubbing her eyes from staring at a screen for so long.* what could this be... they did mention that the residence were different from us, but I had no idea.. OFF: Lieutenant J/G Venka. Science Department. USS Destiny. Denial ON [[Bridge]] Skimmel //Mr. Premier...with your permission, we would like to assemble a team to come to the surface and see if we cannot repair your shield generator...// Premier: *Somewhat irked * //Very well. Considering it was your impertinence that almost destroyed it in the first place. I think you have an obligation to repair it-// Skimmel: * Turning to Harper * Lt Harper Assemble a team. See what can be done to repair the generators- Harper: Aye sir. * Calls up a screen *+ Venka, Vishee * their two faces appear * Put on some cold weather gear were going to the surface, meet me in transporter room 2 in half an hour I'll explain then. Harper out. + * She sends the same message to engineering * [[Transporter room 2-half an hour later]] * Vicki enters the room dressed in her grey thermals under her uniform, a long ankle length tan coloured fur-lined coat, & fur lined hat and gloves. She had a black bag with all the essential equipment in it ready to go. Vishee and Venka were already there with several engineering crewmen, all decked out and ready to go* Harper: I have informed them we will be going to Shield generator three, and the primary generator. Venka, Vishee you will be going to Station three with (Nap's engineering types) Johnson, Walker and Reid. You three are with me * nods in the direction of the remaining engineering officers * OK quick brief-The shield generators are losing power quickly, the shield is holding via power transfer beam; it has only enough energy for five hours. The Arkhamites believe the shuttles crashing threw it caused the damage. But recent scans show the power drainage is coming from within the planets electro magnetic core itself, so our scanners will be a little scanty. Ok people are you ready * Venka, Vishee, etc, step on to the transporter padd and a few short seconds later they materialise at station 3 - - [[ Shield Generator Station Three ]] Beta Tech One: Will you shut up with all the "end of the world” crap? We need answers, not myths. Alpha Tech One: Why? He may just be right. ... ... * The away team beaming in to their room interrupts the two technicians conversation * B. T. O: You must be Lt Venka and ensign Vishee..? Venka: Yes. There is a power drain from within in the planets core. How do we get down to repair it? B. T. O: * having never met a Vulcan before. And a little stunned by her abruptness * Umm.. Over there the shaft entrance takes you down to the First Core room its twenty kilometres down OFF I'll let Venka take that bit from there On [[ Primary Shield Generator Station]] * Harper steppes onto the transporter padd with her small team and vanishes. And in shimmer of turquoise light they rematerialise in the primary Shield Generator Station. * Jual: Lt Harper. * Walks up too her * I am Dr Derin Jual. * His voice had a suggestion of, its your fault so fix it *Thank you for coming Harper: Dr Jual- Jual: Please Lt. Call me Derin Harper: Derin. * Extends her hand, which Derin takes although he is not sure what it means, or what to do * Vicki or Victoria if you want * She shakes his hand * Jual: * Showing her over to one of the work stations * When you first shuttle crashed threw the shielding there was a flux in the locality of the dome* Shows her * the second shuttle there was a minor flux- Harper: * Looking at the screen * Yes. I see. Derin * looking at him * I ran a scan from Destiny. Our sensors picked up that there has been a, power drain on the shielding generators, which has been going on for some time Jual: What do you mean? Harper: * Takes out a padd from her bag and passes it to Jual * See-* points * Jual: that's impossible. The electro-magnetic core within the planet is an eternal source of power; there is no way I could be doing that. Your scans are wrong Harper: I wish I could believe that Durin. But the findings are correct. Jual: * Sitting down at his desk looking at the padd in disbelief * * Annoyed * these stations are manned day and night and have been since the stations were built. I cannot see how something was missed. None of our people would do anything to damage the shield Harper: Yes Durin, your people would not do any harm. But what ever is in th- Jual: Stop * Standing up abruptly * Vicki, don't even mention it Harper: * Empathically * I'm sorry Durin. But * He hold up his hand to stop her from speaking about it again * Let me put it too you like this; if you were trapped somewhere would you not try and find a way out-anyway. Jual: * Not liking what she was saying. But a realisation was sinking in * Yes I probably would. Well Vicki what do propose Harper: Find exactly where the drain is coming from and fix it- [[Arkham. Near the planets Lithosphere]] * A large blob like creature made its was slowly down one of the many labyrinth like passageways. Unknown to the Arkhamites themselves the Shoggoths had, over the centuries fashioned themselves tunnels & passageways under the surface. They had worked hard over the centuries to escape the prison in which they had been placed, and now they were close. Oozing out of the passage and into a large cavern, it metamorphosed into a slug like creature (Think Jaba the hut) and made its way toward several others of the creatures. They seemed excited. Looking at the crude consol they were working on it sees the cause of their joviality; it manages a, sort of smile. * Shoggoth: ~Finally~ (Evil laugh) OFF Tag =/\= Lt. jg Victoria Harper=/\= Acting Chief Science Officer. USS Destiny ON: Venka:*nods* very good, if you will excuse me and Miss Vishee.*she says calmly as she enters the shaft entrance along with Vishee. Venka stands there calmly as she waits to enter the first planet core room, even though her posture is correct she is shivering a little* Vishee:This place is cold! *says Vishee noticing Venka's discomfort* I bet its terrible for you.. Venka: Yes it is pretty cold to me, but I will make it. *they enter the first planet core room and Venka and Vishee step through as they check everything out.* Vishee:*starts running her scanner over the main electro magnetic core, finding the power drainage* I found it, now lets get to work.. Venka: Yes lets. *bends down as she checks it out running her own scanner around it* it seems we need to run a force field around it and then reroute power to essentials, that will take care of the engine and life supports. (OOC: no wait just joking all we need is some duck tape and a rubber chicken, and three hours. are get back to you in five hours, lol j/k) Vishee:Alright lets get on it. Venka:*turns to Johnson, Walker and Raid* do you agree with this? OFF: Lieutenant J/G venka. Science Department. USS Destiny K&R or ambush? ON [[Just outside the great ice city of the polar region]] Kurdin: They have been moved? Jazz: Seems that way. Lets just hope the locals are friendly Kelly: From what the Arkhamites tell us, they were not so friendly in the past Dre: And being trapped in here probably hasn't changed their mood any. If anything it most likely has made them a little, Cranky. Sparks: Which brings us to a good question. Kelly: Which is? Sparks: What if they are being held hostage? Kelly: Go on. Sparks: Well, if I was in this place, and I wanted to get out, I would take any opportunity to do just that. Kelly: I think I know where you're going with this, Sparks, but spell it out for us anyways. Sparks: Well, if I had just seen or heard about a shuttle coming through the shielding, possibly with someone who resembled the Arkamites, I would want to take revenge for being locked up in here, wouldn't you? Kurdin: Yeah, I suppose, but there are some distinct differences between us and them. If these, things, are as smart as you think they are, surely they would be able to deduce that. Sparks: Exactly. Jazz: What are you driving at, Sparks? Sparks: Well, think about it. If I found them, I would eventually come to the conclusion that because they are different, they must be someone other than my jailer, and thus, a visitor to this planet. Surely these creatures are aware of space travel, even though they have been stuck in here for God knows how long. With that in mind, I would eventually come to the conclusion that other members of their race would want to get them back. Maybe even send in a party to get them out. Kelly: So, you're saying that they are using the shuttle crew and the admiral for bait? to catch us? Sparks: Not exactly, but now that you mention it, we can't afford to ignore that possibility either. What I am saying is that I would use these foreigners as a kind of bargaining chip to get me out of the freezer. Kurdin: And what happens when they find out that the answer is no? Sparks: Well, that's where revenge comes in. If I can't use them, I kill them. And the rescue party. Kurdin: You're one morbid bastard, Sparks, you know that? Kelly: You came up with all this on your own? Sparks: Well, yeah. Kelly: When? Sparks: Just thinking while we have been on the trail. Kelly: Okay, WHY did you come up with this? Sparks: We have to assume that they are at least as intelligent as we are, and being cooped up in here, they probably have only been thinking of two things. Revenge, and/or escape. No telling which one has priority. Kelly: You're weird, Sparks. Sparks: I grant you, it's a bit morbid and off the wall, but it may still be a possibility. Think about it, El-Tee. We may be walking into a situation where we have to bargain and bullshit to get those people out safe, or we may be walking into an ambush. In which case, our people may or may not already be dead. Kurdin: I will not accept that, Sparks! Unlike you, I still have hope. Sparks: I'm not saying I don't, sir. All I 'm saying is that we have to consider all the possibilities. Kelly: Okay, sparks, we need to consider your idea, but we keep going. Okay, listen up. Those things out there, are mobile, smart, adapted to the terrain, and able to hide. They moved the shuttle, so we have to assume that they have either the technology to do so, or the sheer strength to pick it up and carry it. either way, we're at a disadvantage. They know this place, and we don't. They have our people, which means they may have had the opportunity to study them. We're in a bad position. Therefore, we continue tactically. We use Starfleet Marine patrol techniques. Recon patrol. Quick, quiet, wired tight and ready for anything. Sparks. Seeing as you're the smartie, you take point. Sparks: *His face drops as he looks quickly at Kelly with a "thanks for nothing, you slug!" look on his face.* fine. Dammit. I'll take point. *For the first time in his life, Sparks was afraid. This was a new experience for him. For once he didn't feel the control he was so used to feeling.* Kelly: Let's move. *They all fall into a patrol pattern and begin to move further up the hill toward the cliff's edge at the base of what was the edge of the great city of ice.* OFF TAG to any member of the away team. Sorry it's so long, but once I have a thought running around in my head, I have to get it out before it dies of loneliness! ===== Lieutenant J.G. Sparks, Colin M.(Human) Assistant security chief USS Destiny NCC-42691 Never any boredom... ON: Kelly: We better pick up the pace, I have no intention of getting stuck out here when it gets dark especially if we don't know exactly what we're dealing with. Kurdin: Afraid of the cold, Lieutenant? Kelly: I'm from Chicago on Earth, and we Chicagoans have anti-freeze for blood. *grins* But still... Sparks: Anti-freeze? Kelly: You've gotta spend at least a year there... the weather is as unpredictable as a drunken Klingon. Sparks: So El-Tee, what's your take on all this? Kelly: The same as it always is, Sparky... we've got a job to do and dammit, we're gonna finish it. *grins* OFF: Tag! =/\= Lieutenant Jennifer "Jenn" Kelly =/\= Chief of Security USS Destiny The Projects OFF: Nice post Sparks... ON: [[Arkham, The Old Ones' City]] *The search and rescue team continued to move, staying quiet for the most part, occasionally an exchange of words is whispered, but that's all. Sparks was leading, Kelly was taking up the rear, with Kurdin, Dre, Cassandra, and Jazz all in diamond formation between the two. Cassandra had finally decided to be quiet but Kurdin was concerned with her, he was running a few scans on her exoskeleton while they were moving to see if there was anything fundamentally wrong with it. They had entered the city and were now going by pyramid-like buildings, some were carved out of granite, some limestone, there was even one that seemed to be carved out of the glacial ice that was abundant in the area* Kurdin: *finishing his scan and tapping Jazz on the shoulder* I think I found why Cassandra is being affected by the EM fields in this area. This seems to be a focal point, we're almost on top of the southern pole at this point, and Arkham's planetary core seems to be somewhat closer to the southern pole, rather than the northern pole or in the center. That's creating an EM vortex surrounding this whole city. That also explains why the tricorders can't seem to make heads or tails of anything more than a few meters away. Jazz: That's not good... is there any way we can modify them so they'll work better? Kurdin: Well... since the medical tricorder is better shielded against the different types of radiation we use in sickbay, it's having a better time scanning, but it's range has been minimized to about 15 meters. Jazz: Then how'd you come up with this EM vortex theory? Kurdin: It's my inner-engineer coming out... just kidding... it's the only thing that makes logical sense... while we were near the runabout, I made some preliminary scans and was able to get a crust depth reading... well as we were entering this place's outskirts... I took another crust depth reading... mainly to see how thick the ice was... and it's noticeably less thick than where the runabout is sitting. The only conclusion I have is that the core is somewhat closer to us now than it was back at the runabout. Jazz: Will that have any medical effects on us? Kurdin: Dre may get a little nauseous from it, being a joined trill... and Cassandra has already gone off the deep end. The rest of us ought to be fine... although if we start detecting any more than trace elements of gamma wave radiation, I'll have to inoculate all of us, just in case. Jazz: Anything we can do for Cassandra? Kurdin: Not that I can think of... I have absolutely zero experience with visalayans... no one does. Jazz: Great... OFF: Tag Jazz, Dre, Cassandra, Kelly, Sparks... EVERYBODY! ===== Patrick " HORNET" McGlone Traps ON: [[ Arkham Shield City ]] * Cassandra walks along watching the strange creatures below them. She has tried to find a way into their minds but nothing seems to be getting through or out. She can feel other presences within the city, but none take the slightest notice of her telepathic scanning. Suddenly she stops causing the other to look at her. * Cassandra: Jazz, Suvock and Vazsaya are on the move. They've encountered some kind of giant rodent. Jazz: Are they alright? Cassandra: Yes. For now, but Suvock's resistance to the cold is all but gone. Kurdin: We have to find them fast. Kelly: Agreed. But which way in. * Sparks, who was up ahead about 15 meters, signals the group. * Sparks: I think I found a way in. * The group moves to where Sparks is waiting, beside a large opening, resembling a doorway, minus the door. * Kelly: Ok, Sparks take the lead. * Suddenly Cassandra tackles Sparks as he steps forward. * Kelly: What the..? Jazz: Cassandra, what's wrong with you? * The two rise from the ground, and everyone stare at Cassandra. * Cassandra: It doesn't feel right. Something here just feels wrong. I can't explain it. Kurdin: Could be a side effect of the EM flux. Kelly: * looking around * Maybe, maybe not. The tricorders don't show anything, nothing here. Jazz: Probably malfunctioning from the flux. Cassandra: That's just it, the flux isn't that strong here. It gets weaker, the closer we get to the opening. And then everything shuts off, like a switch. Dre: How is that possible? Kelly: Maybe there's some kind of dampening field? Jazz: Hmm, quite an elaborate setup. A cage for the hostages? Cassandra: I don't think so. While the premise might have been plausible at the beginning. The facts point out that they are not hostages. Sparks: Facts? Cassandra: One. Anyone wanting bargaining power, wouldn't start dissecting it's chips. Two. These ruin predate the Arkhamian civilization by millions of years. They are intelligent and given the level of civilization displayed here, they should have been able to free themselves, if that was their desire. The fact they choose to live in this environment suggest they want to. Three. There are at least two different species present. The first, highly intelligent and inquisitive. The second, unknown. Jazz: So what are you saying? Kurdin: She's saying, we're no more than curiosities to whatever is inside this city. Cassandra: Exactly. But they * pointing downward toward the octo-head creatures * aren't. We must therefore assume those inside may not wish to interact with those outside. Dre: You mean a trap. The opening is a trap. Kelly: Only one way to find out. * She take a metal object from her pack, then stepping back she throws it into the opening. It explodes instantly. * Sparks: Sh.... Kurdin: Hmm. Booby traps, I believe they are called. Jazz: Ok, how are suppose to get through it. Kelly: Maybe we can disable it. Dre: How? Kelly: A grenade. Sparks. This was the patrol hand-signal for an emergency halt. He could hear Jazz and Kurdin talking quietly. This came to a stop when Sparks called the halt. The entire patrol moved to the side of an ice building shaped like a pyramid.* El-Tee!*He whispered* I need you up here! Kelly: * moving forward* What's up? Sparks: Hear that? *They both heard the scraping footfalls now, but they sounded like they were going away from the patrol.* Kelly: What the hell is that? Sparks: Dunno, but it sounds as if it's going away. Kelly: What was that whistling sound we didn't hear earlier? Sparks: Dunno. Didn't hear a thing, which surprises me because I usually hear great. Kelly: Yeah, me too. Must be the cold. Sparks: Sound travels better in the cold air. *Shaking his head* Nuh, something's wrong with this place. Kelly: So what do you suggest, being the point man? Sparks: Oh no. You're the boss. You decide. Where to boss? Kelly: Your thoughts, Sparks? Sparks: Well, if it were up to me, I'd go check out the center of town, where that steeple, castle, whatever, seems to be sitting. Center of town, biggest building, most amount of security for the whatevers that live here. Kelly: My thoughts exactly. You want to change point man? Sparks: No, I'm okay for now. Kelly: Okay. *To the rest of the patrol.* Okay, listen up. We got a target building. We're gonna start with the big one in the center of town. Do a quick equipment check. We move in ninety seconds. *The patrol members all check their equipment. A couple extra laser scalpels were included in the med kit for ice cutting. Sparks brought one of his Mek'Leth, just for good measure.* Sparks: Okay, I guess we're all set. *They all set off for the tallest building in the town, checking other smaller building entranceways as they pass.* ~ I gotta feeling that this Mek'Leth is gonna come in handy.~ OFF TAG to Kelly, Cassandra, Jazz, Dre or Kurdin. Sorry, this was the best I could come up with today. ===== Lieutenant J.G. Sparks, Colin M.(Human) Assistant security chief USS Destiny NCC-42691 Mixin it up with that locals ON: *Carver was at the Defense Ministry the entire time, and he was totally apprised of the situation. He was also completely surprised when the Arkamite security officers approached him with weapons raised as he sat in the central office of the Chief of Planetary Defense.* Arkhamite Security(NPC): Lt. Tyrone Carver, you are under arrest, we have orders to take you into custody and return you to the Federal District. Carver; *Stands, turns and faces the man.* Excuse me, what for? *He turns back to give a look to the General he had been talking to as if if asking "Give me and hand here man"* Arkhamite(NPC): Conspiracy. Carver: What *Another look to the General* Sir. We've been here the whole time. I was here when the shuttle went down. I was here when you intercepted those transmissions. General Lomal(NPC): It is true. He was here the entire time. He's been nothing but forthcoming. Who do your orders come from Corporal? Security Corporal(NPC): The Government sir, the Senate and the Executive offices. Carver: ~Come on General, you know I only want to help you people through this.~ *He thinks as he glares and hope the General can do some quick thinking. After meeting the man and some of his key officers, Carver knew they could some day be valuable parts as members of the Federation.* General Lomal: Well then Corporal, return and remind them that they have no jurisdiction over military matters, and the arrest of non citizens. ~Going way back in the laws of the land to find that, hope it works.~ Carver: *Gives a look to the lovely, brown skinned, long eared, well proportioned adjutant that sat to the General left, and opposite Carver, and smiles* ~I knew your boss would have something up his sleeve~ Security (NPC): *Is stunned for a second then recovers.* Uh, yes sir. *He turned and walked out the room not knowing what to think.* Carver: *As the 2 security officers exit.* Thank you sir, it's most appreciated. Lomal: Just don't let my faith in you let me down. *Turning back to the maps.* Now, your shuttle went down here. *Pointing it out* And your other shuttle has been traced to here. If I were those people on the first shuttle, and thinking I had no rescue coming, I'd head straight for the Mountains of Madness. Carver: Uh, Mountains of Madness sir? Lomal: Long story Lt. I'm only interested in protecting the lives of the people on this planet. I want that shields back up and soon. But I also want to get my planet accepted into your Federation, and letting your people die on the surface is wrong. Colonel Recob(NPC): Even if they did know it was forbidden? *Shoots a glare to Carver* Carver: Yes they did know...And I cannot defend their actions. I know that this Admiral has been known to pull 'stunts' before, that might have been the case this time. Maybe his curiosity got the better of him, which has been known to happen to us Humans from time to time. Lomal: I cannot blame you for that, our own curiosity is what caused us to venture out into space, now we field a small fleet of fairly well equipped vessels. Carver: Really? How many ships, that wasn't in the Starfleet reports? Lomal: Well Lt, it wasn't in the report because it was classified top secret, even some in the military don't even know, only the highest level of the government and armed forces know about the test ships. There are six of them at present. *Carver makes a mental note.* They most of which are on maneuvers in a neighboring system. Carver: That's very interesting, and I'd love to learn more about them. If all of this is resolved the Federation should be told of this for our reference. Lomal: I assure you Lt, if we all get through this, I'll make sure that's the first that's on my list of things to do. *Turning back to Recob* Take the land cruisers to the borders of the shield, put the local bases on alert status 2. Make sure they're ready, but don't cause a panic. Carver: ~For what? It's just our away team...unless that what they're hiding. The shield is a containment for somethings that so evil and vile that...........they won't even talk about it~ *Gives another look to the adjutant who gave him giddy smile, her face going red.* ~Hmmmm, she's cute....~ OFF: K, I'm back....and Carver knows w'sup, he thinks, and he may have made a friend or two. Science Officer: Our reading indicate collapse of the first sections of the shield within 14 minutes of discontinuing our support for the shield. Skimmel: And if the shield goes down then whatever is inside escapes. Mr. Valen. What is inside the shield? Valen: The darkest regions of hell are inside the shield. And the darkness will spread across the world destroying anything. Skimmel: Call them. Tell them to withdraw. Valen: They are under orders to ignore such requests. Skimmel: Don't tell me. Because they are afraid we might try to trick them. * The lights go out and instantly are replaced by the battery pack emergency lights. * Bridge to Engineering. Miss Michaels. What is happening? Sparks pauses momentarily and retrieves another grenade from his pack. Then stepping out he tosses it. Approximate mass is 5.3 tons each... tritanium-laced skin... the only other thing I was able to get was a basic skeletal scan... their bones are nearly 35% iron... 4% zinc... and 3% silver, gold, and platinum... the remaining 58% is similar material to the bones of a rhinoceros on Earth. Ensign Wallace will be pleased to know that their skin is only three-quarters of an inch thick... meaning the T-116 (TR-116 is the modified one with the microtransporter feature) has enough punch to put holes in their skin... Given the Arkhamites feelings toward their dome, it would be a crass violation of local system rights. I don't have a problem with the inhabitants of the dome trying to undermine and bring down the shield. I hadn't considered the possibility that the Old Ones or the Shoggoths or even the Chuthulu might succeed while we're there. It is possible so that line can proceed. That some other space faring members of the species should choose this time to show up seems terribly fortuitous. I would rather the approaching ships or whatever they are not be related to the species inside the forcefield dome but rather be something the locals will interpret as being the signs of impending doom. If the approaching ships could zap our power supplies at that distance then I don't see any way out. As I understand Victor's intent, Destiny's power problems are caused by the Arkhamites messing around with our systems rather than the approaching ships, symbols, whatever they are, having the ability to draw our power supplies down to nothing from a great distance. All this shifts our objectives. We still want to rescue our people inside the forcefield dome. But now we must also do one of the following: a) prevent the collapse of the shield and the release of the horrors within or b) prevent any damage that might occur if the shield does collapse. All the while maintaining our trek attitude of honoring and protecting sentient life even if it is determined to make a quick end of us. To recap: If the forcefield dome goes down, it must not be our doing. The power loss is not due to the approaching whatevers. And as Victor pointed out, the Chuthulu are end of the world type stuff. Away team - Continue the search for survivors. Science team at the Field Emitters - Do what you can to maintain the shield against the efforts of those inside to bring it down. Harding and those on Destiny - Regain control of the ship so we can fix the systems and do what we can from space. Diplomatic team (Liri, Carver, Delan) - The locals who are still rational will tend to blame the Federation for the trouble especially if "doom" is approaching from space. Keep them from launching an attack on us. You might consider having some of them come to the ship. Something was happening or something was wrong with the tricorders that was draining power from them at a high rate, and it seemed to be exacerbated by using the device. The good news is that the ice storm had been brief and had moved on, but the damage had been done, Kurdin had a chunk of falling ice land on his foot and had lightly bruised the bone, the only "casualty" of the ice.* Kurdin: Jazz, Cassandra, Dre... Ensign John Wallace TAC, USS Destiny Close Encounters ON: * While for some the dome shield falling was an occasion for panic, for others it was an opportunity to indulge in their baser instincts. While some prayed for a miraculous salvation from the unnamable terrors that had been contained a half world away, others preyed on their fellows. Looting and thuggery were everywhere in the cities and towns of Arkham. If there was to be no tomorrow and everything was to be lost, then nothing would be lost by answering the calls of desires best left suppressed. * * And for still others, it was a time to respond to the calls of duty. One such group gathers, equipment and ordinance at the ready. * [[Flyer approaching the South Polar region of Arkham]] * The Flyer holds a squadron of Arkhamite heavily armored infantry; foot soldiers like those who have carried the weight of combat on every planet in every time. These are wearing light weight body armor and a large assortment of projectile and beam weapons. Their Captain stands between the rows of soldiers and surveys them. He nods. * Captain Deadmeat (NPC) : Boys and girls. This is where we get to show those pantywaist civilians just why they keep us around. We do not know the precise nature of the enemy. We do not know his numbers and capabilities. But we do know that hundreds of years ago, our ancestors beat these things back without using any of the sophisticated equipment you folks take for granted. Question, Private? Private Redshirt: I'd like to know when we get to have a close encounter with the bugs. I've got a powerful urge to introduce one to the Mark V, sir. Captain: You'll get your chance soon enough. This is where we are drawing the line. Our job is to hold them on the land. If they get past us and actually get into the water then they'll be whole orders of magnitude harder to detect and wipe out. Female Private: That's just because you have to rely on the Navy types. Sir. Private Redshirt: Yeah. Every knows the Navy couldn't find their own heads with both hands if they didn't have a checklist and a user's manual. Sir. Captain Deadmeat: That's enough. You better hope the Navy can shoot better than that, cause they're going to be providing support for us. Them and the Starfleet types. * The Flyer comes down with a jolt. Much harder than usual and several of the soldiers are cursing. The Captain quickly regains his feet. He slams a large red button with one hand that causes a vehicle sized hatch in the side of the flyer. As the hatch opens, he turns one last time to his troops. * Remember. Our great great great great grand-daddies beat these things and they had no more idea what they were fighting than we do. Private Redshirt: Sir. It probably looked a lot like that. * The Captain turns instantly but there is no time to do anything but stare. The Shoggoth moves with amazing speed extending a portion of its body into the flyer and wrapping the dark blue protoplasmic extension around the Captain. A heartbeat later and the Captain is pulled out the hatchway. The soldiers, stunned for only a second, follow and open fire on the rolling mass. High in the air above them, the extension around the Captain resolves itself into a group of individual tentacles, each pulling a separate direction on the Captain. His body resists for a moment, and were it not for the variety of weaponry being fired, the soldiers might have heard the snapping of bones, the tearing of muscles and sinews as the Shoggoth pulled the Captain into a dozen separate pieces. * Female Private: Eat this, you bastard!! * She opens fire on the shoggoth.* [[Bridge - Destiny]] Rioschi: I'm detecting over 100 separate lifeforms all heading directly for the breach in the shield. Female Private: These guys seem to be black cacti with tentacles and wearing oversized starfish for hats, sir. Lieutenant: The weapons, private. The weapons. Female Private: It doesn't look like anything I've ever seen. Lieutenant: Then what makes you think it's a weapon? Female Private: I suspected they weren't hauling an oversized magic wand in this environment. And they're aiming it this way. Lieutenant: Down! Down! Everybody down!! * The shoggoth raised itself to nearly full body length as it approached their position. At that instant, the Old Ones fired their weapon. The beam, looking as much like a lightning bolt as anything, crossed the intervening space instantly and squarely hit the shoggoth. It stopped moving immediately and began to shift shape and colors rapidly. A heartbeat later, the shoggoth exploded showering the soldiers with fragments of protoplasmic goo. * Private Redshirt: What the blue blazes was that? Lieutenant: High powered particle beam weapon. Artificial lightning. Who knows? Lucky for us that thing got in the way. Private Redshirt: The new bad guys are terrible shots. Female Private: Or great ones. Accordingly, Cassandra will be less affected by the local environment than anything we've got. Of course, the exosuit is also not designed for this environment so we would expect some problems to crop up that will be dealt with when the mission is over... probably by Michaels who can become something unaffected by the sight of an unshielded Medusan. Another movement from her left sent Vicki into a squatting position to avoid another blast from a weapon. Her eyes closed and without moving her torso, Vicki flipped the knife, reversed her grip and threw the blade behind her. It was after she heard the satisfying thud of the blade pass through the attacker's leg, he slumped to the floor in pain, and then she opened her eyes. * I'm so sorry * she said to the Arkhamite. She quickly surveys the panic of the poorly lit control room. The surfaces are shiny as though covered with a micron thick layer of water. Michaels begins scanning immediately with her tricorder. The Arkhamite engineer turns and glances at her. * Wesson: Michaels? Michaels: Assistant Engineering Officer of the USS Destiny. Here to offer whatever assistance I can. Wesson: Take your pick. * He gestures at the unusual control panels with a sweep of his arm. * Nothing is working the way it should and everything needs to be working three hours ago. Michaels: * Stepping up to what is apparently the main control panel. * It would be useful if you could explain the main principles of operation to me. Wesson: *Tapping the respective instruments high over his head. * Power. Temperature. Pressure. Flow to the central core. Michaels: Meaning no disrespect but the ergometrics of this installation are not good. Wesson: Ergometrics? Michaels: The operator / machine interface. This installation does not appear to have been designed with Arkhamites in mind. And what is this slime that covers everything? Wesson: I don't know about the design. It was done a couple hundred years before my great grandfather was born. As for the slime- One of the things you people released came through here. Michaels: Assessing blame for what happened does not help achieve the goal we all desire at the moment. Wesson: Hmm. Well that much is true. * From down the corridor there are screams and terrified voices and a moment later dozens of Arkhamite workers are running through the control room. * Noname: It's coming back. It's... * pointing at Michaels. * She called it. Its coming for her. Wesson: Don't be an idiot. Get your people out of here calmly. Noname: Don't you see? We'll never get the shield up again as long as she- * More screams and the end of the long dark room is suddenly filled with a moving, pulsating mass of bluish protoplasm. It ebbs and surges through the space toward them, tentacles sprouting from its surface in unexpected places, grabbing at things and the Arkhamites. * Michaels: That... Wesson: That is what the shield contained all these years until you people destroyed it. * He grabs her arm and begins pulling her away from the Shoggoth. * We have to get going. I've seen what that thing does to people it catches. * Michaels turns to follow but the way is blocked by the workers. Wails of despair add themselves to the screams of panic and it only takes one glance to see the cause. The only exit is blocked by a group of the strangest creatures Michaels has ever seen. Extremely tall and basically round and ribbed like an oversized black cactus, the creatures are making rapid flute like sounds from the giant starfish atop their bodies. The group is carrying something that looks rather like a large crystal at the end of a long pole. * Michaels: And those are? Wesson: No idea. Michaels: * Tapping her communicator. * Michaels to Destiny. Teal: // Destiny here. What is your situation, Lee? We're picking up an odd assortment of signals from your location. // Michaels: Besides me, there are several Arkhamites and two other species in the immediate area that I can not identify. * The Shoggoth accelerates and begins surging toward the Arkhamites and the Old Ones very quickly. But the Old Ones are ready for it. Amid another rapid barrage of musical notes, they quickly position their crystal device and a split second later a lightning bolt leaps from the tip of the crystal and instantly catches the Shoggoth midbody. It oozes backwards away from them and the Old Ones step forward to follow, sweeping the Arkhamites and Lee to the side. * Teal: // Lee. What's happening? We've got a highly unusual power surge in your location.// Michaels: One of the unidentified species has fired some type of high energy particle beam weapon at the other. * It only takes a few seconds of the beam fire and the eerily haunting bellows and screams of the Shoggoth are ended when the creature explodes showering everyone with the still warm chunks of ooze. * They've killed the other species with the weapon. Teal: // Are you safe? // Michaels: Only if they've changed the definition of safe. * One of the Old Ones turns and approaches Lee. Four of the five points on its head seem to be directed at her and she finds herself thinking of the points as eyes. It reaches out a tentacle from mid body and she retreats against the wall. The Old One moves forward on the heavier group of tentacles that support its vast bulk. Wesson moves to sweep the searching tentacles aside but is seized and tossed away as though he were a rag doll. * Wesson: Don't anger it. Michaels: I'll keep that in mind. Teal: // Lee. What is happening? // * And instantly, the Old One pulls the communicator off Michaels and lifts it toward the top of its body while two other tentacles caress her face. Lee touches the creature with one hand. The Old One makes some piping sounds and a second Old One approaches. The two carry on their flute duet for a moment and the second starts to move away. It stops, flutes at the first one and then wraps one of its tentacles around a tentacle of the first and begins pulling it. The first Old One resists only long enough to give the communicator back to Michaels. Then it to rotates away from her and assumes the same position at the control panel where Lee was working earlier. * Wesson: I don't believe it. Michaels: What that it realized that I am not the same as you or that it didn't kill me? Wesson: No. Look at what they are doing. * All of the Old Ones are standing in front of control panels, piping their musical tones at each other, their tentacles flying over the buttons and switches. Michaels nods. The controls are at the right height. * [[Bridge - Destiny]] Skimmel: Report. Teal: We've lost communication with Lt. Michaels. Leihi: *She gets rather nervous and anxious as the blobs approached she recocks her rifle and takes aim.* Carver: At your own time, OPEN FIRE! *He releases the rest of the group and they start firing their phased rounds towards the shoggoths. As the their weapons hit they barely phased the shoggoths, only the grenades have any affect.* Mulap(NPC): Grenades!!!!!!!!!!! *He pulls out rips off the pin and hurls it over the ledge.* Let em have it! *He picks up his rifle and puts in on full auto and fires straight into a Shoggoth that is nearly ripped to shreads by it.* Leihi: *She notices what her Sgt. is doing and switches to auto also. Slowly but surely the rest of the unit also adapts to the tactic and they slowly begin to repulse the Shoggoths. Though several had changed shape and continued to move of the hill, looking like magic carpets flying up towards them.* 3 o'clock low! Cpl. Linsor(NPC): *The grenadiers here's the call and takes aim.* Liri: +The sheild is going back up. I'm beaming you all out....+ Carver: It's about time Commander. I lost my comm badge and the rest of our equipment was fried too. Liri: Standby for beam-out *Seconds later the first six of them are beamed to the transporter. The other transporters grabbing the rest of them in succession.* [[Destiny Transporter Room 1]] Carver: Phew..........*As he stands from his kneeling position on the transporter padd.* Mulap(NPC): Wow....so that's what a transporter feels like *As he checks to see if his appendages are where they're supposed to be.* Carver: Yep, maybe you'll learn to like it. [[A few hours later]] *Carver goes to visit Mulap in his quarters as they about to depart.* Carver: *As Mulap comes to the door.* We should talk. Mulap: Why what about? Carver: We're about to leave the system, we'll return you and your team back to it's home base. Mulap: Um....about that Lt.....I've discussed it with my team and on Arkham we have a tradition when units of our military goes into battle. It came about long ago when our units would go off to battle and come back with barely any leaders left, the chieftans and lords would then put new officers in charge of the militias....but that led to many problems, wars, and internal struggles.... so a law was imposed. It stated that after a unit goes into battle, afterwords, the loyalty of that unit shall be shifted to the senior member who survived the battle. In this case Lt.....that is you. Carver: Huh? So what are you saying. Mulap: I'm saying that you fought side by side with us, lead us in battle, and you have earned our loyalty...I'm officially requesting permission to remain aboard the Destiny...along with the rest of my unit, they all wanted to stay as well....Except for Cpl Leihi, she wanted to go back home to her family and left a few hours ago, with the Infantry survivors. Plus.....I could get used to quarters like this *As he gazed around at the plush guest quarters.* Carver: Whoa.......so you're saying you want to come with me as some sort of oath entourage. Mulap: Not quite, but we will follow wherever you lead, and aide you in whatever you decide as proper. Carver: Hmmmmmmmmmm....well I'm the person to ask if you can stay Sgt. I'm but Lt, serving in a midlevel position, I can't grant you asylum, only our Captain can. Mulap: Then lets go see the Captain. My unit is from the North Lt. we have been the strongest supporters of the government move to join the Federation, what better way to prove our people to you than to come with you and serve along side you, as you serve along us. Carver: *Shrugs* Well....you have me sold. Lets go see if the Captain will approve it. ~Hmmm.....my own personal Commando team.........the Captain might find that proposal intriuging...we wouldn't even need that Marine detachment HQ wanted to send us.~ OFF: Tag.... Well cap....can they stay....I really like the future that this storyline could have to it. Plus it would leave a return to Arkham wide open. This would give us 12 Commando's ready for whenever they'd be needed. Plus I've only identified 2 of the teams members, leaving another 10 open for anyone who wants to have a primitive Commando. (Well.....kinna different then Walace, but yeah you get the idea) Lt. Tyrone Carver ACTO USS Destiny Medical Wrap Up ON: [[Destiny, CMO's Office]] *Kurdin was impressed. Wallace was recovering quickly, it had been only a day since the surgery and the wound had shown visible signs of healing and they hadn't even started the regeneration process. Liri had returned but Kurdin had released her to her husband's care and watchful eye after a short discussion with him. Harper was resting in her quarters, with orders to join him for dinner that evening. And Venka was fully recovered and back on duty. Kelly and Sparks had long since been released with a full bill of health. He was merely making sure all the files entered by Ensign Dre's staff were correct and they indeed were. He reminded himself that he had to sleep... he hadn't done that in two days and it was starting to catch up to him.* Kurdin: Ten more minutes... then I go grab 6 hours. [[Liri's Quarters]] *Conley was polishing his newest acquisition for his collection, a Hechler&Koch USP handgun, it was in working condition but his supply of 45 caliber ammunition was very limited. On the table in front of him, a small arsenal of antique small arms was strewn, mostly disassembled for cleaning and preservation. As he racked the slide after finishing with the USP to doublecheck the amount of oil he had applied, the computer rose out of the table, nearly toppling another cup of coffee which Conley was able to grab in time, his reflexes seemed to be returning to normal.* Computer: [[ Incoming message from LIGHTNING ]] Conley: Switch to secure channel and encrypt. Display the communique. Chavez: // How ya doin Kevin? // Conley: Not too bad Domingo... what's up with the unannounced message? Chavez: // There's rumor something big's going down soon... we're not sure where but we know it's big. // Conley: So, nothing new to report then? Chavez: // Nope... how's the girl? // Conley: Stubborn as usual... but she's better. Well, I'm glad you're trying to keep me in the loop, but I'm not in the business anymore pal. Chavez: // Amigo... as you once told me... once you're in... you're never out. // Conley: I did, didn't I? Chavez: // Yep... // Conley: Thanks anyway Domingo... but from now on... unless it's life or death... telling me does nearly no good. Chavez: // Yeah I know... just figured you'd like to know. LIGHTNING out. // *the computer goes black and slides back into the table, Conley hadn't even paused from reassembling a Hechler&Koch MP5, unfortunately he had no ammunition for it but it would still fire holographic bullets in the holodeck.* OFF: Wallace? Liri? ===== Patrick " HORNET" McGlone Medical Wrap Up [[Iraqi desert]] *The scorching sun hammers relentlessly onto the shifting desert sands. On a dune overlooking the small two-lane road, two figures lay camouflaged by natural terrain and high technology. Below them, nearly two miles distant, a convoy of military vehicles threw a dust cloud into the air* Wallace: Count. Seger (NPC): Four APC's, two Toyotas with twelve-sevens, one tanker truck. Wallace: Roger. This is our stop, Gimli. Seger: *nodding* Let's play the game. *the two men lay still under their covering of sand and brush, waiting patiently as the convoy approaches. When it finally reaches the kill zone, Seger clicks his triggers, and two columns of dust shoot into the air, throwing the two Toyota trucks from the road and trapping the tanker truck between the craters. The APC's grind to a halt, the rear vehicle slamming into the one in front of it. Another explosion rocks the valley as Seger sets off another charge, destroying the lead APC as troops begin to pour out of it and scatter in all directions.* Wallace: Visual on the commander. Seger: Take him. Wallace: *squeezing the trigger smoothly, firing a titanium projectile at nearly Mach 3 from his electromagnetic rifle* He's down. Seger: Nice shot, Legolas. Wallace: *chuckling as he downs another Iraqi* Thank you, Gimli. Too bad your ax won't reach as far as my bow, eh? Seger: Hey, now, that was halfway insulting! Wallace: *dropping another officer* Of course. Would you expect anything less from me? Seger: *chuckling* No, no I wouldn't. *sets off another charge, destroying the last APC and flipping it onto several troops.* Now I wonder what's in that tanker that's so special. Command seemed rather uptight that we not damage it. Wallace: Probably some data or something, masquerading as an oil tanker. Wait. What the hell is coming out of it? Seger: *looking through the spotting scope* Oh shit. One of the ragheads shot it. It's leaking some sort of gas. Wallace: We're gone. *keying his radio mike* +Gandalf, this is Legolas.+ Command office: +Go ahead, Legolas+ Wallace: +The Ring has been found. Repeat, the Ring has been found.+ Command: +Copy, Legolas. The Skylord is on his way.+ Wallace: +We have a problem, Gandalf. The Ring has felt the fires of Doom+ Command: *shakily* +Roger, Legolas....Skylord is on his way. Rendezvous at the Gap of Rohan+ Wallace: +Roger, Gandalf. Legolas out.+ *looking at Seger* We're out of here, right now. I don't like the look of what's coming out of that tanker. Seger: Agreed. *Emerging from the sand, the two men begin to jog south towards the extraction zone* Wallace: Gandalf sounded worried when I told him the tanker was damaged. Seger: Yeah, he did. Wallace: Bio or chem, what do you think? Seger: Don't know, hopefully we won't find out. We were a good 1500 meters away. Wallace: Wind's toward us, though. *looking to the sky* There's the skylord. Seger: *seeing the chopper swinging towards them* About time. *noticing the chopper's speed* John...They're not stopping. Wallace: Shit. *waving his beacon towards the chopper* They have to see us! *thinking for a second* The tanker... Shit, Bill! They're leaving us out here because of the tanker! Seger: *watching the chopper fly overhead, seeing the full biosuits the crewmembers are wearing, and the large incendiery bomb carried under the fuselage* My God, you're right. They're going to burn the whole valley. Wallace: And they never had any intention of getting us out. *keying his mike* +Gandalf! Gandalf, this is Legolas. Come in!+ *nothing but static on the other end* Those sons of bitches! Seger: It's only a few hundred klicks back to Minas Tirith. We can hump that far. Wallace: We'll have to. Let's go. *the two men shoulder their packs and start to trudge through the desert, looking back in time to see the mushroom cloud emerge over the ridgeline behind them.* Hopefully that takes care of whatever's in the tanker. Seger: Yeah...hopefully. *suddenly the world turns bright white, blinding them both. Voices flitter in and out of their hearing...then all is black* [[Destiny sickbay]] Wallace: *slowly opening his eyes, finding himself in the now-all-too-familiar confines of the sickbay* What...how... Nurse (NPC): Ah, you finally decided to rejoin the land of the living. Welcome back, Ensign. Wallace: *Looking at the IV in his arm, the swatch of gauze and tape over his midsection, as memory comes flooding back* I take it we got back alive. How are the rest of the away team? Nurse (NPC): They're fine. Dr. Kurdin even felt well enough to do your operation. You got lucky, Ensign. Somehow that bullet missed all your major organs. Wallace: *remembering Iraq* Yeah, I guess I'm just a lucky guy. How long till I'm back to work? Nurse: Oh, a few days at least. We'll need to do some intestinal and skin regeneration. Wallace: I don't suppose there's any chance someone could bring me a tumbler of my MacAllan, is there? Nurse: No, sorry, Ensign. Alcohol would interfere with your meds. Wallace: *sighing* I figured as much. Well, can I get a book, at least? Nurse: Sure, what would you like? Wallace: Well, I never finished Moorcock's Eternal Champion series. Can you find the last three volumes? Nurse: I'll see what I can do, Ensign. Wallace: Thanks. OFF: Ensign John Wallace TAC, USS Destiny Trials Past And Trials Future...
