Personal History |
Nathan Benjamin was born to two Starfleet parents. His mother was Captain Anisha Benjamin of the Galaxy Class Starship USS Trident, and his father is Captain James Benjamin of the Excelsior Class Medical Vessel, USS Antietam. For the first six years of his life, Nathan lived with his mother and father on the USS Trident. Nathan was a bright youngster and rapidly picked up his schoolwork. Before his sixth birthday, he became an excellent chess player, often beating the intermediate players on the ship.
In early 2376, the Trident encountered a Borg Cube. Her crew investigated, and eventually destoyed the cube, which was heavily damaged. Some of the Borg however, managed to transport aboard, and overtake the Trident's crew. Seeing that her vessel was lost, Captain Benjamin ordered the abandon ship, but never made it off. Neither did Nathan. The Borg assimilated the boy, along with most of the ship's compliment. Fewer than one third of the people aboard escaped in the pods.
For two years, Starfleet searched for the Trident with no results. Finally, after repeated sightings in or near the Badlands by Maquis rebels and various Cardassian patrols, Starfleet caught up to the ship. By the time this happened, however, there was really nothing that could be done. The Trident was destroyed. The vessels that took part in the battle with the Trident also found and destroyed the Borg colony in the Badlands. They rescued the children from the Trident, who at this time were still in maturation chambers.
Nathan's mother is still unaccounted for and presumed to be dead, but his father still serves aboard the USS Tomahawk. After removing all the Borg implants that they could remove safely, Starfleet released the children to their families. Nathan went to live on Earth with his grandparents in Dublin. He would have gone to live with his father on the Tomahawk, but due to the size and nature of the ship, families are not allowed to stay aboard.
For the next few years, Nathan lived with his grandparents and attended school. Already a very bright child, the Borg implants actually enhanced his mental faculties, and Nathan graduated at the top of his class from high school at the age of 14. He promptly began a degree program in neurology and Psychological research from the University of Notredame on Earth. Along with a general medical practicioner's courseload, the boy completed his degree in a little over three years, and with the approval of his father, applied for a direct commision as a medical officer in starfleet. After a year of waiting, and another of training and constant monitoring, he was given the go ahead to be placed on active duty. He was assigned to the Nova Class USS Bloembergen as Acting Chief Medical Officer, Neuro Specialist.
