I was again pleased to help organize and lead this year's "50 Miler". After I was finished, I was again able to look back on the outing and tell myself, and any others, that anything is indeed possible. In the beginning the thought of a hike extending about 45 miles in length left me with some reservations concerning my own ability, and though I cannot speak for others, I'm sure I wasn't the only one.
This year's "50" took us to see some more of the most beautiful country in the United States. We went through Yosemite, and into Ansel Adams Wilderness. All of the scenery is a lifetime memory., being as it was extraordinarily beautiful.
On the subject of food, Paula has certainly become an expert, providing us with not only as much as we could eat, but also a wide variety of foods. Although her work last year was good, this year was greatly improved. We had some of the same food as was served last year; however, changes were made in almost every case for the better. This was Paula's second year in food, and we're not sure if she may have a third, but if not, she will most defiantly make suggestions.
This was also Genie's second year providing us with the equipment, without which, our trip would not have been possible. Her organization and hard work were commended upon by everyone? Especially on the night of pack inspection. She made that long evening go that much faster. Again, we don't know if she will hold the same position next year, but, she will definitely throw in a few suggestions to the next person.
The leaders displayed great leadership. No girls had more than they could handle, and everyone was pushed to her limits, but taken care of at the same time, and always got the attention she needed. Thanks to the leadership in itself of the leaders, the rest of had a wonderful example to follow.
This year was a wonderful year as far as teamwork goes. Everyone on this hike participated in helping others and helping whoever needed help to her best ability, even if it meant giving a hug. The camaraderie among the girls was the same friendship building experience it has always been, if not greater.
At the end of a very tedious hike, it makes me happy that I was part of such a wonderful group of girls, who gave as much of anything that they could, even though it was only an ear or a few encouraging words. It all makes me think of a few very encouraging words which I overheard which were said by Ray Waugh.
"These are the girls from Hell. They think they can go anywhere and do anything - - They're right!"
And when I look back at the mountains and cross-country trails we went on which we finished with our own hands and feet, and encouraging words from each other, and I have only one thing to say - He's right!
