1984 Fifty Miler by Micky H.

Aug. 11

Today we left for Levett Meadows about 8:30 am. (except for Cindy and Dennise, they left on Friday) and we arrived at camp at 2:00 pm. The water in the creek was cool but warm enough to wade in. Mr. Waugh and Micky did a little fishing before dinner but didn't catch anything. Also before dinner a doe came into camp, she was very tame and she tried to eat our sweets. Dinner was really great, we had steak, salad, potatoes and sa-mores. After this we sat around the fire until 9 pm when most of us went to bed.

We got up to a cool morning but a great breakfast. We had french toast, bacon, orange juice and milk. Thanks Mrs. Duca and Paul for the great breakfast. After breakfast we cleaned up and went to Kennedy Meadows. There we left the cars and had our pictures taken before we hit the trail. The trail was strenuous because of the humidity and altitude change but the scenery was great. We crossed over a grand river then hiked a ways to a place that looked over the reservoir. We made camp about 2 pm. and cleaned up. 'We had a small fire after dinner and then we went to bed early.

We left camp about 9 am. We had to do a lot of climbing but it was well worth it. The view was magnificent and the wild flowers beyond beautiful. The weather was just perfect for the hike, over cast with some sprinkles. We arrived in camp about 3 pm and cleaned up, had dinner and made a small camp fire.

YA!!!! We get to sleep in tomorrow.

Today we stayed in camp and were able to sleep in as long as we wanted. We did laundry, washed our hair and went swimming. The weather was perfect for relaxing, nice and sunny. Was great just to kick back, we all needed it.

Today was an adventurous day. We traveled, on the trail until lunch, then we realized we had taken the wrong trail, so we decided to go cross country to the correct trail. There was really no trail to speak of to follow, so we made our own. We went down steep rocks, scrambled over crevices and through thickets to get to our destination. After all that, we found the trail we wanted and made it to camp. We traveled nine hours this day and boy were we tired. That evening during our camp fire we were able to hear the coyotes "calling in the distance." We went to bed as soon as the garbage was burnt and the fire was out.

We were able to sleep in today because we were so tired from yesterday. It took us four hours to get back on the right trail, and on the way we went through a lot of bushes which made it seem like a jungle to us. Once through all that the trail became much easier the rest of the way to camp. At camp we cleaned up and had a real nice campfire. We went to bed real early because we were still a little tired from the day before.

Oh. Almost forgot, Cindy has a drinking problem,

We got up and on the trail by 9:30 am. It was an easy hike for there was little up hills and a lot of down hills. The flowers were in bloom everywhere and oh so beautiful to see. All that purple, white, yellow pink, they all seem to shine with beauty for us. We arrived at camp and the men went for a swim. At dinner Mr. Bourdet started a food fight with the peas, which most of us didn't want to eat. The campfire was really nice since it was the last one on the trip. We get to go home tomorrow. YAH!!! YAH!!!

We hit the trail by 8:45 and it was cool until about 9:15 when we were starting going up the hill. We had to move over off the trail because of the pack trains, that we wished the horses had a separate trail to them self. When we got to the cars, we cleaned up and put on clean cloths. Boy did it feel good to get into clean clothes. We left and headed down the road and stopped for pizza and salad bar, except for the men they had sandwiches. We all made it home by 7 pm.
