Memorial Day weekend saw minus tides on the Pacific coast, so we did what any Pacific Northwest natives would; loaded up the G. Gordon Lindy and went a diggin' - for clams, that is. Westport, Washington is nothing if not ideal for shellfish of the bivalve variety. The flat sandy beach extends south from the jetty all the way to Wash Away Beach, which is further than the eye can see. Popular with surfers, that seal bobbing in the waves is likely just some dude in a wet suit.

Although the weekend proved to be rainy throughout the state, Westport had its moments of sunshine, enough in fact to earn the town a new nickname: Westport-orico. (Well done Vicky.) When the sun wasn't shining, we found indoor activities to bide our time.

Westport isn't large except in reputation, but it's got bowling (at 92 years young, Norbert proved he's still king of the lanes), and gambling just down the road at the casino in Tokeland, hometown of Don Paulson of Laugh-In fame. (You knew they were smoking something, right?)

By Sunday the rain asserted itself with authority, so we packed in our clams and headed for home and dry shoes and socks. Thanks Mark and Phyllis for hosting us. 'Til next time, Westportorico . . .
