For the second year in a row we managed to pull off a surprise birthday visit to Bremerton, Washington. Once again, midway across the divide of Puget Sound, I found myself wondering why I don't make the relatively short trip more often. It's not for lack of convenience. My Bremerton friends probably wonder the same thang.

It was a chilly crossing, picking our way between icebergs as we sailed. Wait. I'm thinking of an entirely different trip in an entirely other state. With no icebergs obstructing our route, it was a smooth sailing, although it felt like icebergs. The weekend of the birthday girl's big day happened to be relatively ice-free (at least 'til Sunday afternoon), a welcomed break in a cooler than normal Northwest winter.

Upon arriving, our plans for splurging on a night out were quickly thwarted by same birthday girl's partner in crime whose talent with spices is only surpassed by his talent with paints. This night we dined on home-cooked Indian cuisine, and it was superb!

The following morning, none the worse for wear (that never happens), we hit the Family Pancake House for breakfast, and mamosas just to be safe. A bit of the hair o' the dog can't hurt, right? All in all it was an awesome visit. Mike and Rose proved themselves consummate hosts (again), and the Washington State Ferry System delivered us home safe, dry and sound. 'Til next time . . .
