born. In the 1820 Census for Jackson Co. there were 2 other males and 4 females

whom were in the same age group (26-44). Also in the county were the families
of John and James both in the 16-25 age group, with the family of James in the
45 and up group. In the 1830 Washington Co. Illinois census William and Mary
had 4 sons, and 5 daughters. They were in the 40-50 age group as was Whitaker
still his neighbor. Also there were the families of James (60-70) the Rev. War
hero (pension # 32195), young Webster, John Crabtree, John and Mary Williams,
and George W. Lee. William was listed as Senior in the 1840 Newton Co. Mo.
census and in the 50-60 age group with his 2nd wife listed in the 30-40 age group.
Mary died of Cancer, and William went back east supposedly for another Lee wife. Living nearby was his daughter Rebecca and her husband William D. Crabtree. who was her cousin and the son of Whitaker Crabtree. John, J.G. and
Whitaker Crabtree, and Jesse Tiner were also neighbors in Mo.

Children of WILLIAM CRABTREE and MARY LEE are:

His niece, Vira Skipworth of Chicago wrote to William Carroll Crabtree that she

Notes for MARY WYNN CRABTREE:
Mary was the 2nd wife of E.R.W. Cox and they had no children.
The 1880 Lee Co. Ky. Census shows Mary (Polly) Yeary-Crabtree living with
her daughter in law, Mary W. Crabtree, age 44, and 2 grandsons Granvil P.
Crabtree, age 16, and Horis G. Crabtree, age 7.(Harris Jordan Crabtree).

These were the sons of William Price, & Mary J. Horn-Crabtree.
This was Mary Pollys daughter not daughter in law as Mary W. was her
her daughter.
I still cannot find anything to indicate that she was ever married prior to
E. R. W. Cox..

She is buried at the Eaton Cemetery in Clay City Ky about 30-40 yards
from Elisha R. W. Cox.

According to relatives she was not well liked by the children so it appears that
she had Elisha buried in Clay City far from his 1st wife Susan Jane Pitman who is buried at Hopewell Ky, when she died the family buried her across the graveyard from Elisha with a simple stone concealed by a bush, and nothing on it except "Mary W Cox".
This is my opinion since i knew that she was not well liked by the children..

Notes for ELISHA ROBERT WYNN COX:
Elisha migrated from Lee County Virginia in January 1850 and settled in Eastern
Kentucky. He enlisted in the original 7th Ky. Union Army August 19, 1861,
and reported for duty Sept. 22, 1861. as a Musician/Private. He was discharged
a First Seargeant Oct. 5, 1864 at Louisville Ky. After serving his 3 year enlistment in which he saw action many times including the siege of Vicksburg Mississippi.

Since many of the settlers in Eastern Ky came from Lee County Va. they wanted
a Lee County Ky. So eventually they took parts of all the adjoining County's
and formed Lee County as we know it today.
Elsiha was the head surveyor of Lee County and is mentioned in many of the
historical documents and publications of Lee County Ky.
Elisha is buried in Clay City Ky near his second wife Mary, his first wife Susan
Pittman the mother of all the children is buried at Hopewell Ky on the hill above
Beattyville Ky just off old route 52.

Elisha is buried at Clay City Ky. in the Eaton Cemetary on Wells Street.

I have Elisha's Civil War History but i have'nt decided to enter it here yet
since it is about 10 pages.

83. ELISHA ROBERT WYNN7 COX (MARY VIRGINIA6 CRABTREE, JOHN5, WILLIAM4, WILLIAM3, WILLIAM2, JAMES1) was born May 03, 1829 in Green Hill, Lee County Virginia, and died January 12, 1915 in Powell County Kentucky. He married (1) SUSAN JANE PITMAN April 08, 1852, daughter of MICHAJAH PITMAN and NORMA ???. He married (2) MARY WYNN CRABTREE June 08, 1884, daughter of JACOB CRABTREE and MARY YEARY.

Winfred Tipton 1/17/97

Notes for SUSAN JANE PITMAN:
Susan Pitman was the mother of all the Cox children and died at age 49, she
is buried at Hopewell Ky in Lee County just off old route 52 on the mountain
above Beattyville Ky.
1850 Census shows her as 19 years making her born in 1831, but her
tombstone shows 1833.
Some records show her mother as Naomi, census shows Norma, whichever
it is believed that she was either half or full blooded indian.

It seems that Robert Mason had a moonshine still in his house and Nearlyn

When this would happen Robert would have to shut up the house to keep
the still from being detected.

Carrie Cox my grandmother was the only real mother i ever had since she raised
me, and to me she was the greatest person i ever knew.
I never heard her ever say anything bad about anyone but i have seen her
shake her head a few times.
During the depression days of the 30's a lot of people were starving but when
anyone came by, which was often she would always feed them and give them
food to take home.

We were far from being wealthy but we knew how to raise food and we would
spend all summer canning food for the winter. I never could understand why
the other neighbors could'nt do the same.
