The Excelsiors were originally an attempt by Starfleet to break the Transwarp barrier which eventually failed. The Excelsior has become one of the most successful starships in Federation history and now, 100 years after the USS Excelsior rolled of the production line they make a large amount of the fleet. These ships perform the 'dirty work' of running a nation such as transporting supplies. Despite this during the Dominion War Excelsiors were called upon to fight with disastrous results. Although in the day Excelsiors had been the most powerful ship in Starfleet  they were now outclassed by the technologically advanced Dominion ships and many Excelsiors were lost. Newer vessels should begin to replace the lost ships soon. There are two major Excelsior refits. One is a small upgrade of everything and is known as the Excelsior Refit Mark I. The second is much more powerful. Almost as powerful as a Defiant. It is known as Excelsior Mark II.
