STDs
Chlamydia
- Caused by a bacteria
- Two of the possible symptoms are: burning in urination, and discharge from the vagina or penis
- Can be cured by antibiotics
Gonorrhea
- Caused by a bacteria
- Symptoms can include pain on urination, or a discharge from the vagina or penis
- More than fifty percent of men and women have no symptoms, so they often do not know that they have an STI (sexually transmitted infection)
Hepatitis B
- Caused by a virus
- Virus is found in blood, semen, vaginal fluids, and saliva
- Spread by sexual contact with an infected partner, infected blood in used needles, sharing toothbrushes, or razors
- Symptoms can include: tiredness, loss of appetite, and yellow skin
- Hepatitis B is the only sexually spread infection that has a safe and effective vaccine to prevent the infection
HIV/AIDS
- Spread by a virus
- The virus is blood borne
- Symptoms include: acute flu-like illness, high fever, chronic diarrhea, and extreme tiredness
- There is no cure for aids
- A mother can transmit the virus to her baby during pregnancy, childbirth and breastfeeding
- Spread by sharing needles - for drugs, tatooing, or body piercing
Herpes
- Caused by two types of viruses
- Symptoms can include recurring, tender blisters on mouth or genitals that are painful
- Can be passed on by someone with no symptoms
- No cure for herpes
Genital Warts
- Caused by a virus
- There is no cure
- The warts can be treated
- The warts can appear 1-20 months after having sexual contact with an infected person
