Commander Joshua Underwood has spent the better part of his life in Starfleet, serving in the Corps of Engineers. However, in his entire career, recklessness and a youthful carelessness have plagued him since his days in the Virginia Military Institute. But he is also one of the best engineers in the fleet, and his record displays this.

Underwood has served as chief or assistant engineer on almost all of SFC's ships, and in some other positions to a limited degree. But he is most likely found in the engine room, fixing a damaged EPS conduit and trying to keep his engineers from having beverages near open ones - an occurrence that has been noted more than once while he served as Chief Engineer. His temper is also legendary among the Engineering corps, and has been known to scream curses in either Klingon or Scots Gaelic when something is done wrong or an action by an inept engineer causes the power to go out. Despite this, he is a fairly social man who enjoys a good party. He is well-liked and respected by his peers and shipmates, even though he sometimes does not show it....depending on who he's been yelling at.

Currently, Commander Underwood is Second Officer and Chief Engineer of Starbase Nexus One, under the direct command of Fleet Admiral S'Ronn.
