The massive structure known as the Monolith is the secluded fortress of Admiral Joshua Underwood. Built for him in 2391 based on the tower of Orthanc, which was part of a vision created by Terran author J.R.R. Tolkien in the middle of the 20th century, the Monolith is an impressive 2,300 feet tall and its circular slab stretches over fifteen miles of Belle Terre's mountain landscape. The tower is surrounded by metal forges and massive training camps for Army soldiers, and the lines of smoke from the fiery cauldrons can be seen from the Evan Pardonnet Building in Eau Claire, about thirty miles away.
