Important note: if after constructing the project, you find that it transmit but does not receive, you can put a 10K resistor between the Vcc and Rx line. And please take some eef

Some pics of my constructed project:

Creativity and resourcefulness rules!! I built my dongle and housed it inside the case of a Genius Easy Mouse. Looks ergonomic too.

More info on the RadioShack IR Opto Device (276-142) can be found here:

I chose Red LED for TX and Green LED for RX. These indicator LEDs are very important for diagnostics. You can easily tell if the dongle receives IR signal from the device you're connecting

There are two types of IR headers. Commonly pin 2 is not used, but in some mobos capable of FIR, this is utilized. In this project, it is not capable of transmitting with FIR so the only the 4 other pins are used.

Again, creativity rules! the IR group recommends mini-DINs for IR connection in your PC, but since it's hard to find in my locality, I went for DB9. I have to put the IR logo for a professional look and to avoid mistaking it for a serial port. The cable I used is a 4-wire telephone line. This is not very ideal but it works great. IR group recommends you use shielded cables for your IR device.

Works very well and this project costs only about PhP250.00 (5US$) to build. Cheap and very efficient.
