A Pacific Crest Trail Adventure
EXCERPT from CHAPTER EIGHTOREGON
Ashland, Hillary, Crater Lake, Lolo latrine, Columbia River.
The next day our differing paces and needs had spread us out, and on July 31st I eventually left California at Donomore Meadows east of Donomore Peak and crossed into Oregon.
A small weathered wooden sign marked “California/Oregon” had been nailed to a tree by someone to mark the spot.
This was a real milestone. After 102 days on the trail and having walked over 2832 kilometres, I now considered myself to be well and truly over half-way towards my goal.
Musing over the experiences of the past three months, I realised that I hadn't yet ever considered packing it in, but there had been times, particularly around the 1000km mark where I’d questioned the sanity of all this hard yakka and wondered if my lift wasn't quite making it to the top floor.
But the entire state of California was behind me now, I was on a roll and totally invincible!
The next minute I was flat on my back with my legs sticking up unfrontiersman-like in the air.
I’d been walking backwards getting a last look at California and had managed to trip over Oregon.
