Bio:      Katya led an average life in Chelyabinsk. Her family was middle class and she and her siblings, Pavel and Sveta, spent much of their time playing around town. Katya made excellent grades in school and was identified as something of a prodigy. She graduated from the local high school very early and enrolled in Starfleet Academy.
By the age of 20, Kovalenko had earned her commission as an Ensign and was posted aboard a patrol ship, the Galaxy Class USS Cogdell. However, her first mission was short lived as her ship vanished from it's patrol area. An exhaustive search turned up nothing and the Cogdell was declared missing, presumed destroyed.
This was only half the story though. The Cogdell had been caught up in a Dominion attempt to create their own artificial wormholes. The ship had simply been in the wrong place at the wrong time. One of the wormholes, unstable as it was, opened right on top of their position and sucked them through. Once on the other side, the Federation Starship was attacked by Jem'Hadar fighters, disabled, and boarded. The crew fought bravely, but almost all of the Cogdell's crew was slaughtered by the Jem'Hadar. Katya was one of the very few that survived the encounter. All of them came to regret that.
The remaining crew of the now destroyed ship was taken to a planet that served as a POW camp. To the surprise of the new comers, there were many Federation and Starfleet people there. There were other species that none of them recognized. A full seven years passed while they were there. At some point, all the Dominion personnel left the camp and left them to fend for themselves.
Then came the USS Nile. Katya was given the choice of staying on to serve in a Science Capacity and she accepted. The spirt that had sent her to the stars in the first place had not been extinguished by the long captivity and isolation.
